Abstract:In this article we characterize operators on Banach spaces which have the same projections related to their outer or inner generalized inverses. As corollaries, we obtain well-known results for the Drazin inverse of bounded operators.

Abstract:We present a unified representation theorem for the class of all outer generalized inverses of a bounded linear operator. Using this representation we develop a few specific expressions and computational procedures for the set of outer generalized inverses. The obtained result is a generalization of the well-known representation theorem of the Moore--Penrose inverse as well as a generalization of the well-known results for the Drazin inverse and the generalized inverse A T,S (2) . Also, as corollaries we get corresponding results for reflexive generalized inverses.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide a thorough characterization of the family of all Cantor-Bendixson derivatives of the spectrum, Browder spectrum, and the Drazin spectrum of bounded linear operators using projections and invariant subspaces. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that if two commuting operators, R and T , satisfy the conditions that R is Riesz and T is a direct sum of an invertible operator and an operator with an at most countable spectrum, then can also be represented as a direct sum of an invertible operator and an operator with an at most countable spectrum.

Abstract: Motivated by Barr{\'\i}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. This provides a class of nontrivial projections in Toeplitz algebra.

Abstract:Inversion of operators is a fundamental concept in data processing. Inversion of linear operators is well studied, supported by established theory. When an inverse either does not exist or is not unique, generalized inverses are used. Most notable is the Moore-Penrose inverse, widely used in physics, statistics, and various fields of engineering. This work investigates generalized inversion of nonlinear operators. We first address broadly the desired properties of generalized inverses, guided by the Moore-Penrose axioms. We define the notion for general sets, and then a refinement, termed pseudo-inverse, for normed spaces. We present conditions for existence and uniqueness of a pseudo-inverse and establish theoretical results investigating its properties, such as continuity, its value for operator compositions and projection operators, and others. Analytic expressions are given for the pseudo-inverse of some well-known, non-invertible, nonlinear operators, such as hard- or soft-thresholding and ReLU. We analyze a neural layer and discuss relations to wavelet thresholding. Next, the Drazin inverse, and a relaxation, are investigated for operators with equal domain and range. We present scenarios where inversion is expressible as a linear combination of forward applications of the operator. Such scenarios arise for classes of nonlinear operators with vanishing polynomials, similar to the minimal or characteristic polynomials for matrices. Inversion using forward applications may facilitate the development of new efficient algorithms for approximating generalized inversion of complex nonlinear operators.

Abstract:If $\H$ is a Hilbert space, $A$ is a positive bounded linear operator on $\cH$ and $\cS$ is a closed subspace of $\cH$, the relative position between $\cS$ and $A^{-1}(\cS \orto)$ establishes a notion of compatibility. We show that the compatibility of $(A,\cS)$ is equivalent to the existence of a convenient orthogonal projection in the operator range $R(A^{1/2})$ with its canonical Hilbertian structure.

Abstract:The theory of generalized inverses of matrices and operators is closely connected with projections, i.e., idempotent (bounded) linear transformations. We show that a similar situation occurs in any associative ring $\mathcal{R}$ with a unit $1 \neq 0$. We prove that generalized inverses in $\mathcal{R}$ are related to idempotent group endomorphisms $\rho: \mathcal{R} \rightarrow \mathcal{R}$, called projectors. We use these relations to give characterizations and existence conditions for $\{1\}$, $\{2\}$, and $\{1,2\}$ inverses with any given principal/annihilator ideals. As a consequence, we obtain sufficient conditions for any right/left ideal of $\mathcal{R}$ to be a principal or an annihilator ideal of an idempotent element of $\mathcal{R}$. We then study some particular generalized inverses: Drazin and $(b,c)$ inverses, and in rings with involution, $(e,f)$ Moore-Penrose, $e$-core, $f$-dual core, $w$-core, $v$-dual core, right $w$-core, left $v$-dual core, and $(p,q)$ inverses.

Abstract:In this paper, we present various inequalities regarding the linear combinations of orthogonal projections. These results aim to generalize and refine well-known inequalities, such as those due to Buzano and Ostrowski. Additionally, we investigate a specific case of these linear combinations and introduce new refinements of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. Furthermore, we establish some findings related to the covariance and variance of bounded linear operators. Moreover, as applications of some of our results, we establish several inequalities involving the product of three operators, one of which is a linear combination of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator. Finally, we introduce a new positive operator construction in terms of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator, and we derive some norms and numerical radius inequalities involving it.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give a full characterization of the operator distances from projections to an idempotent, which includes the minimum value, the maximum value and the intermediate values. Let $H$ be a Hilbert space and $\mathbb{B}(H)$ be the set of bounded linear operators on $H$. Given an arbitrary idempotent $Q\in \mathbb{B}(H)$, it is proved that $$\|m(Q)-Q\|\le \|P-Q\|\le \|I-m(Q)-Q\|$$ for every projection $P$ on $H$, in which $I$ is the identity operator on $H$ and $m(Q)$ is a specific projection called the matched projection of $Q$. When $Q\in\mathbb{B}(H)$ is a non-projection idempotent, it is proved that for every number $\alpha$ contained in the interval $\left[\|m(Q)-Q\|,\|I-m(Q)-Q\|\right]$, there exists a projection $P\in \mathbb{B}(H)$ such that $\|P-Q\|=\alpha$. Two uniqueness problems concerning the projections that attain the minimum value or the maximum value are also dealt with.

Abstract:The famous Drazin inverse and generalized Drazin inverse were introduced by Drazin in 1958 and Koliha in 1996, respectively. In the present paper, the author introduces the concepts of left and right (generalized) Drazin inverses, which are the one-sided versions of classical (generalized) Drazin inverses, in Banach algebras. Several characterizations of one-sided (generalized) Drazin invertible operators on Banach spaces are given. By utilizing the one-sided Drazin invertible spectra, the characterizations of B-Fredholm spectra for Banach space operators are obtained. These perturbational results can be regarded as generalizations of classical Fredholm theory in Banach spaces.
