Abstract:Mn(III)-mediated formal [3+3]-annulation has been developed using readily available vinyl azides and cyclopropanols with a wide range of substituents. Vinyl azides were successfully applied as a three-atom unit including one nitrogen to prepare pyridines and δ-lactams by the reactions with monocyclic cyclopropanols as well as to construct 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1] and 2-azabicyclo[4.3.1] frameworks with bicyclic cyclopropanols, bicyclo[3.1.0]hexan-1-ols, and bicyclo[4.1.0]heptan-1-ols. These reactions were initiated by a radical addition of β-carbonyl radicals, generated by the one-electron oxidation of cyclopropanols with Mn(III), to vinyl azides to give iminyl radicals, which cyclized with the intramolecular carbonyl groups. In addition, application of the present methodology to a synthesis of the quaternary indole alkaloid, melinonine-E, was accomplished.

Abstract:Mn-III-catalyzed functionalization of vinyl azides via phosphorylation was developed to synthesize various beta-keto phosphine oxides in high yields. The transformation is operated in mild conditions and tolerant of a range of functional groups. Abstract:A Mn(III)-mediated divergent synthesis of substituted pyridines and 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1]non-2-en-1-ol derivatives was exploited using readily available vinyl azides and cyclopropanols with a wide range of substituents. In short, the reactions of vinyl azides with monocyclic cyclopropanol provided pyridines in the presence of Mn(acac)(3) (1.7 equiv), whereas those with bicyclic cyclopropanols led to the formation of 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1]non-2-en-1-ol derivatives using a catalytic amount of Mn(acac)(3). These reactions may be initiated by a radical addition of beta-keto radicals, generated by the one-electron oxidation of cyclopropanols, to vinyl azides to give iminyl radicals, which would cyclize with the intramolecular carbonyl groups. Abstract:A highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of pyrrolidones by the copper‐catalyzed alkynylation/annulation of aliphatic amides with alkynyl carboxylic acids is discussed in this paper. A broad range of easily accessible alkynyl carboxylic acids were introduced at the β‐methyl group of aliphatic amides with the assistance of an 8‐aminoquinolyl auxiliary group via decarboxylation to achieve the subsequent cyclic CN bond formation within one hour. High selectivity of β‐methyl groups over methylene groups was observed, and the extension of this catalytic system to the activation of methylene CH bonds failed. The substrates with two different groups at the α‐position of the aliphatic amides lead to the formation of diastereoisomers which is determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The initially produced products with Z‐configurations can be easily transformed to the corresponding products with E‐configurations by the treatment with dilute p‐toluenesulfonic acid after the reaction. This catalytic tandem decarboxylative cyclization provides a new opportunity for the direct functionalization of sp3 CH bonds.

Abstract:α-Pyridones and α-pyrones are ubiquitous structural motifs found in natural products and biologically active small molecules. Here, we report an Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N- phenyl acrylamides and N- tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:The first copper-catalyzed three-component annulation of α,β-unsaturated ketoximes, 1,3-dicarbonyls and paraformaldehyde has been documented. This novel strategy achieved the two C−C bonds cleavage of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds directly as a single-carbon synthon and provided a new and highly efficient method for the synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted pyrroles in moderate to good yields with broad functional group compatibility.

Abstract:A novel and efficient copper or nickel catalyzed highly selective denitrogenative annulation of vinyl azides with aryl acetaldehydes has been developed. 2,4- and 3,4-diaryl substituted pyrroles, which are difficult to synthesize by the reported methods, can be highly regioselectively prepared by this protocol simply switched by the selection of the transition metal catalysts. Compared with the reported acidic or basic conditions for polysubstituted pyrrole synthesis, the present reaction conditions are mild, neutral, and very simple without any additives.

Abstract:Herein, we present the first catalytic asymmetric nucleophilic addition of diarylphosphines to 2H-azirines, facilitated by a chiral Mn(I) complex. This method not only provides access to novel class of derivatives of the aziridine core—a structural motif recognized for its antitumor and antibacterial properties—but also introduces a phosphine moiety alongside the generation of an NH moiety within a strained three-membered ring. The discovery of this new Mn(I) complex that both enables the reaction and induces stereoselectivity is pivotal, as it underscores the significant potential of this earth-abundant metal in advancing asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:Mn‐catalyzed hydroarylation polyaddition of 1‐(2‐pyrimidinyl)pyrrole with aromatic diynes is demonstrated. Use of MnBr(CO)5 as a precatalyst under the optimized reaction conditions achieved site‐ and regioselective hydroarylation polyaddition, giving the poly(arylenevinylene)s with excellent vinylene selectivity. Nonstoichiometric polyaddition that is derived intramolecular transfer of the Mn catalyst walking through the 1a moiety is also demonstrated. Mn‐catalyzed hydroarylation polyaddition of 1‐(2‐pyrimidinyl)pyrrole (1a) with aromatic diynes is investigated. The use of commercially available MnBr(CO)5 as a precatalyst under the optimized reaction conditions resulted in a site‐ and regioselective hydroarylation polyaddition, affording the corresponding poly(arylenevinylene)s (PAVs) with excellent vinylene selectivity. The reaction protocol eliminates the production of stoichiometric amounts of byproducts from the monomers. The nonstoichiometric polyaddition of an excess amount of 1a with aromatic diynes is also demonstrated. The 2‐pyrimidinyl substituent promoted the intramolecular transfer of the Mn catalyst walking through the 1a moiety.

Abstract:Herein, we report a manganese‐catalyzed three‐component vinylation strategy for the synthesis of vinylphosphines from readily available alcohols, sulfones, and phosphines via acceptorless dehydrogenative strategy. This multi‐component, four‐stage, one‐pot protocol offers a stereoselective approach, overcoming the challenges associated with achieving these products through the hydrophosphination of terminal alkynes. The reaction utilizes sulfones and common alcohols to access both (E)‐β‐substituted vinylphosphines (using methanol) and α‐substituted vinylphosphines (using primary alcohols) in yields ranging from 52% to 99%, with E:Z stereoselectivity of 95:5 to 99:1. Importantly, the synthesized branched‐substituted vinylphosphines exhibited superior ligand performance in the copper‐catalyzed cross‐coupling of aryl bromides with pyrazole compared to the commercially available PPh3 and diphenyl(vinyl)phosphane.
