Abstract:In this study, we investigated the solid–liquid phase equilibria of the quaternary system Na+, Mg2+//CO32–, SO42––H2O and its four ternary subsystems at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure using the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The composition of the saturated liquid phase and wet residue composition of a series of samples were determined. A double salt is generated in the MgSO4-Na2SO4-H2O ternary system at 298.15 K, which is different from the one generated at 277.15 K. The composition of the salt was identified as Na2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O by X-ray diffraction combined with Schreinemakers' method. The phase equilibria of other ternary subsystems were also compared and discussed at different temperatures. The quaternary system Na+, Mg2+//CO32–, SO42––H2O at 298.15 K has three invariant points, seven univariant curves, and five crystallization fields, corresponding to MgCO3, MgSO4·7H2O, Na2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O, Na2SO4·10H2O, and Na2CO3·7H2O. The crystallization area of MgCO3 was the largest, indicating that it will crystallize first under the conditions used in our study. This research provides information on the phase diagram of this quaternary system, which has not previously been determined. The fundamental data obtained is important for investigating the separation and crystallization processes of inorganic salts in the treatment of phosphogypsum. This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
