Abstract:Controlling the ordering of self-assembled nanostructures is vital in block copolymer nanotechnology but still presents a challenge. Here we demonstrated that the adsorption and ordering of amphiphilic rod-coil block copolymers on a substrate can generate well-aligned stripe nanopatterns by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The effects of the copolymer concentration and the surface affinity on the formation of stripe nanopatterns were examined. The simulation results revealed that the well-aligned stripe nanopatterns with controllable thickness and stripe width can be obtained in the systems with higher copolymer concentration and surface affinity. An immersion coating experiment was designed to verify the simulation results, and an agreement is shown. The present work provides a strategy for constructing well-aligned stripe nanopatterns in a controllable way.

Abstract:Nanoscale dot patterns are important in various fields. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate ordered nanopatterns on substrates through a polymer self-assembly approach. In this work, it is reported that polypeptide-based rod-coil block copolymers can self-assemble into surface micelles on substrates, thus forming dot nanopatterns. The size of the surface micelles is readily adjusted by the degree of the polymerization of the block copolymers. It is found that most of the surface micelles are in a sixfold coordinated lattice, indicating an ordered array feature. Defects such as fivefold coordination arrays and sevenfold coordination arrays are also observed, which are derived from the nonuniform size of the micelles and the existence of nonspherical micelles. The experimental findings are well modelled by dissipative particle dynamics theoretical simulations, and the simulations provide more detailed information, such as the packing manner of the polymer chain in the surface micelles.

Abstract:The phase behavior of cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymer melts is investigated by the dissipative particle dynamics simulation. In order to understand the effect of chain topological architecture better, we also study the linear rod-coil system. The comparison of the calculated phase diagrams between the two rod-coil copolymers reveals that the order-disorder transition point (χN)ODT for cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymers is always higher than that of equivalent linear rod-coil diblocks. In addition, the phase diagram for cyclic system is more “symmetrical,” due to the topological constraint. Moreover, there are significant differences in the self-assembled overall morphologies and the local molecular arrangements. For example, frod = 0.5, both lamellar structures are formed while rod packing is different greatly in cyclic and linear cases. The lamellae with rods arranged coplanarly into bilayers occurs in cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while the lamellar structure with rods arranged end by end into interdigitated bilayers appears in linear counterpart. In both the lamellar phases, the domain size ratio of cyclic to linear diblocks is ranged from 0.63 to 0.70. This is attributed to that the cyclic architecture with the additional junction increases the contacts between incompatible blocks and prevents the coil chains from expanding as much as the linear cases. As frod = 0.7, the hexagonally packed cylinder is observed for cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while liquid-crystalline smectic A lamellar phase is formed in linear system. As a result, the cyclization of a linear rod-coil block copolymer can induce remarkable differences in the self-assembly behavior and also diversify its physical properties and applications greatly.

Abstract:<p>Chiral nanoarchitectures usually possess unique and intriguing properties. However, the construction of 2D chiral nanopatterns through polymer self‐assembly is a challenge. Reported herein is the formation of chiral stripe nanopatterns through surface self‐assembly of polypeptide‐based rod‐coil block copolymers on microstripes. The nanostripes align oblique to the boundary of the microstripes, resulting in the chirality of the nanopatterns. The chirality of the nanopatterns is closely related to the width of the microstripes, i.e., a narrower width results in higher chirality. Besides, the chiral sense of the nanopatterns can be regulated by the chirality of the polypeptide blocks. This work demonstrates the transmission of chirality from polymer to nanoarchitecture on a confined surface, which can guide the preparation of nanopatterns with tuned chiral features.</p>

Abstract:An ordered surface nanostructure endows materials advanced functions. However, fabricating ordered surface-patterned particles via the polymer self-assembly approach is a challenge. Here we report that poly(y-benzyl-L-glutamate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) rod-coil block copolymers are able to form uniform-surface micelles on polystyrene microspheres through a solution self-assembly approach. The size of the surface micelles can be varied by the molecular weight of the block copolymers. These surface micelles are arranged in a manner consistent with the Euler theorem. Most of the micelles are six-fold coordinated, and the number difference between the five-fold and the seven-fold coordination is 12. Simulations on model systems qualitatively reproduced the experimental findings and provided direct observations for the surface-patterned particles, including the polymer chain packing manner in surface micelles at the molecular level and the array feature of the surface micelles through 2D projections of the surface patterns.

Abstract:Using real-space self-consistent field theory calculations (SCFT), directed self-assembly of block copolymers was explored on sparsely nanopatterned substrates. In this study, the lamellar structure forming block copolymers are confined between two surfaces. The top surface is strictly neutral, and the bottom one is periodically patterned with neutral interspacing (nanopattern), which forms a sparsely nanopatterned substrate. The dimension of nanopatterns is commensurate with periods of lamellar structure of the block copolymers self-assembling in bulk. By systematically varying the film thickness and interspacing between nanopatterns, the density multiplication of nanopattern in the film was investigated, and a variety of nanostructures not available in bulk (nonbulk structures) were observed.

Abstract:We report a simulation on the formation of ordered stripe structures of nanoscale rods driven by symmetric diblock copolymer melts. Due to the preferential adsorption of one species of the diblock onto the mobile rods, the phase ordering process will couple with the movement of rods. We find that the self-assembly of rods on the copolymer scaffold produces the highly ordered nanowires of rods, and copolymer blends in turn form the well-oriented lamellar structure. This is due to the interplay among the micro-phase separating dynamics in the diblock copolymer, the wetting interaction between rods and diblock copolymer, and the nematic ordering dynamics of rods. We examine the influence of the domain size, the wetting strength, and the rod number density on the formation of such a nanoscale structure. Additionally, we indicate that the orientation of the pattern can be well controlled by external fields acting on the rods. The results suggest that our model system may provide a novel and simple way to control and design the ordering nanowire structure.

Abstract:Poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) block poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes were synthesized on the silicon wafer surfaces by the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and water contact angle methods were employed to study the surface morphology and stimulus-response behavior. It was found that simple solvent treatments could induce phase segregation of the POEGMA and PMMA segments thus introducing nanoscale patterns. The feature size could be less than 10 nm and was tunable on the nanoscale. Various patterns including spherical aggregates, wormlike aggregates, stripe patterns, perforated layers, and complete overlayers were obtained through adjusting the upper block layer thickness. These patterns could switch between the different morphologies reversibly after the treatment with selective solvents.

Abstract:Self-assembly behavior of a mixture system containing rod-coil block copolymers and rigid homopolymers was investigated by using Brownian dynamics simulations. The morphologies of formed hierarchical self-assemblies were found to be dependent on the Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction εRR between rod blocks, lengths of rod and coil blocks in copolymer and mixture ratio of block copolymers to homopolymers. As the εRR value decreases, the self-assembled structures of mixtures are transformed from an abacus-like structure to a helical structure, to a plain fiber and finally are broken into unimers. The order parameter of rod blocks was calculated to confirm the structure transition. Through varying the length of rod and coil blocks, the regions of thermodynamic stability of abacus, helix, plain fiber and unimers were mapped. Moreover, it was discovered that two levels of rod block ordering exist in the helices. The block copolymers are helically wrapped on the homopolymer bundles to form helical string, while the rod blocks are twistingly packed inside the string. In addition, the simulation results are in good agreement with experimental observations. The present work reveals the mechanism behind the formation of helical (experimentally super-helical) structures and may provide useful information for design and preparation of the complex structures.

Abstract:The solution self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers provides a versatile approach to design novel nanostructured materials. Multiblock polymers, particularly those composed of liquid crystalline and coil blocks, are of significant interest due to the potential display of nematic ordering in liquid crystalline domains, offering intriguing optical and mechanical properties. In this study, dissipative particle dynamics is used to investigate the solution self-assembly of rod-coil-rod copolymers in a coil-selective solvent. Extensive molecular simulations were conducted to elucidate the impact of polymer composition, concentration and flexibility on the self-assembly behavior. A quantitative analysis was performed to investigate how polymer conformations varied with changes in composition, concentration, and rigidity. Simulation results show that, at small rod compositions, rod-coil-rod polymers self-assemble into micelles at low concentrations, transitioning to network formation as concentration increases. An increase in rod composition leads to the formation of larger aggregates, resulting in cylindrical micelles and membranes. The results reported here also offer insights into the role of flexibility in shaping the self-assembly behavior of rod-coil-rod triblocks in selective solvents, thus, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the factors governing the formation of diverse structures in the solution self-assembly of triblock copolymers.

Abstract:The self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers has recently become one of the hot topics in the research of supramolecular chemistry. This article reviews the program on the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers with different rod blocks, including polyfluorene, polydi(styryl)-anthracene, poly(para-phenylene), poly (para-phenyleneethynylene), poly (para-phenylenevinylene), poly (2, 5-benzophenone), polythiophene, poly (phenylquinoline), etc. The syntheses and photophysical properties of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers are introduced. The formation and regulation of well-defined one-, two-, or three-dimensional conjugated domains in nanoscale dimensions by the self-assembly of these copolymers in different solvents, temperature and concentration are reviewed emphatically. The potential applications of the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers in many fields, particularly in optoelectronic device, are summarized. Finally, the prospects for the self-assembly of conjugated rod-coil block copolymers are stated.

Abstract:Block copolymer thin films with controllable self-organized patterns were prepared by solvent-induced order-disorder transition method.The rate of solvent evaporating from thin solution-cast block copolymer films was controlled and used to manipulate the orientation of copolymer assemblies.With the decreasing of the solvent evaporation rate,the surface morphologies of the block copolymer films changed from disordered spherical pits to hexagonal spherical pits,hybrid morphology of spherical pits and in-plane cylinders,and finally to in-plane cylinders.A Closely-spaced nanoparticle array was fabricated with depositing gas-phase silver nanoclusters onto the as-prepared block copolymer template.

Abstract:Bottom-up self-assembly of high-density block-copolymer nanopatterns is of significant interest for a range of technologies, including memory storage and low-cost lithography for on-chip applications. The intrinsic or native spacing of a given block copolymer is dependent upon its size (N, degree of polymerization), composition, and the conditions of self-assembly. Polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) block copolymers, which are well-established for the production of strongly segregated single-layer hexagonal nanopatterns of silica dots, can be layered sequentially to produce density-doubled and -tripled nanopatterns. The center-to-center spacing and diameter of the resulting silica dots are critical with respect to the resulting double- and triple-layer assemblies because dot overlap reduces the quality of the resulting pattern. The addition of polystyrene (PS) homopolymer to PS-b-PDMS reduces the size of the resulting silica dots but leads to increased disorder at higher concentrations. The quality of these density-multiplied patterns can be calculated and predicted using parameters easily derived from SEM micrographs of corresponding single and multilayer patterns; simple geometric considerations underlie the degree of overlap of dots and layer-to-layer registration, two important factors for regular ordered patterns, and clearly defined dot borders. Because the higher-molecular-weight block copolymers tend to yield more regular patterns than smaller block copolymers, as defined by order and dot circularity, this sequential patterning approach may provide a route toward harnessing these materials, thus surpassing their native feature density.

Abstract:Solution self-assembly of amphiphilic "rod-coil" copolymers, especially linear block copolymers and graft copolymers (also referred to as polymer brushes), has attracted considerable interest, as replacing one of the blocks of a coil-coil copolymer with a rigid segment results in distinct self-assembly features compared with those of the coil-coil copolymer. The unique interplay between microphase separation of the rod and coil blocks with great geometric disparities can lead to the formation of unusual morphologies that are distinctly different from those known for coil-coil copolymers. This review presents the recent achievements in the controlled self-assembly of rod-coil linear block copolymers and graft copolymers in solution, focusing on copolymer systems containing conjugated polymers, liquid crystalline polymers, polypeptides, and polyisocyanates as the rod segments. The discussions concentrate on the principle of controlling over the morphology of rod-coil copolymer assemblies, as well as their distinctive optical and optoelectronic properties or biocompatibility and stimuli-responsiveness, which afford the assemblies great potential as functional materials particularly for optical, optoelectronic and biological applications. Striped patterns self-assembled from rod–coil diblock copolymers on spherical substrates

Abstract:In this work, the structures and topological defects of striped patterns self-assembled from rod-coil diblock copolymers confined on spherical substrates were examined using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The stripes were formed by orderly packed rod blocks that were stabilized by coil blocks in solvents. Three types of disclinations with charges of +1, +1/2, and -1/2 and dislocations were observed in the striped patterns. The sum of the disclination charges was always +2, which is consistent with the Poincare-Hopf theorem. Two categories of local defect stripe patterns were observed, namely, spirallike and ring-like. The structures and surface densities of the defects were found to depend on various parameters, including the rigidities of the rod blocks, the radii of the spheres and the hydrophobicities of the rod blocks. The predictions were compared with our previous experimental observations and agreement was found. This work provides a method for producing striped patterns on curved substrates and can serve as a theoretical support for preparing nanoparticles with complex surface structures.

Abstract:We investigate the self-assembly of hard rod-shaped particles with an affinity for A block in diblock AB copolymer templates. The results are consistent with a series of recent experimental findings. Furthermore, we construct the phase diagrams of the mixture with different aspect ratios of particles by changing the particle concentration phip and the volume fraction f of the A block. The variation of the aspect ratio in different particle concentrations will significantly influence the effective volume of the A component and consequent phase behavior of nanoparticle/copolymer hybrid systems, which may account for the emergence of some unexpected phenomena of morphological transitions. The present study provides insightful guidance to control the nanometer-length-scale structures of shaped particles for potential applications as functional devices.

Abstract:We synthesized a series of rod rod block copolymers, poly(octyl-4'-(octyloxy)-2-vinylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate)-b-poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PVBP-b-PBLG) with different rod diameters, and we focused on the effect of size disparity on their self-assembling behaviors in bulk. By using differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy techniques, we found that the columnar nematic (Phi(N)) liquid crystalline phase of PVBP and the hexagonal columnar (Phi(H)) phase of PBLG were disrupted to different extents depending on the volume fractions of PVBP (f(PVBP)'s). When f(PVBP), is about 60%, the Phi(H) phase of PBLG is retained with the appearance of the two second-order diffractions in WAXD patterns. When f(PVBP) is increased to above 73%, the ordered structure of PBLG is destroyed, and when f(PVBP) is 91% even the first-order diffraction peak disappears. At the same time, the Phi(N) phase of PVBP changes from poorly ordered to well ordered with increasing f(PVBP). Accordingly, with f(PVBP) increasing from 60% to 91%, the microphase-separated structure goes through a poorly ordered structure to an interdigitated lamellar morphology and to a bilayer lamellar structure.

Abstract:The self-assembling ability of block copolymers offers an attractive strategy for the organization of pi-conjugated polymers. This article reports the synthesis of a coil-rod-coil triblock copolymer consisting of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) as the rodlike segment and polystyrene as the coil-like segment. The chemical structure of the afforded triblock copolymer has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, Raman, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet-visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The small-angle neutron scattering and photophysical measurements indicate that this triblock copolymer exhibits unique solvatochromatic behaviors through the interplay of aggregation-induced pi-pi stacking and planarization of the conjugated backbone. Supramolecular gel nanostructures have been produced via the controlled assembly of the polymer into H-aggregates. It has been demonstrated that the use of the solvent composition to influence chain conformations and thus to manipulate the packing of the conjugated polymer blocks is important for achieving control in the assembly of conducting polymers and associated optical characteristics.
