Abstract:The inhibition effects of sodium lignosulphonate (SLS) on corrosion of AZ31 magnesium alloy in 3.5% NaCl have been studied by a mass loss method, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that SLS can inhibit effectively the corrosion of AZ31 magnesium alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution at 298 K. When SLS concentration is 4.0 g.L-1, the inhibition efficiency is up to the highest, 75.4%. However, further increase in SLS concentration will decrease the inhibition efficiency. SLS is an anion inhibitor; the adsorption of SLS on the AZ31 magnesium alloy surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, which is chemical adsorption based on the adsorption free energy Delta G(0) and the Arrhenius active energy E-a.
