Abstract:We demonstrate a fast-response liquid crystal display (LCD) with an ultra-low-viscosity nematic LC mixture. The measured average motion picture response time is only 6.88 ms, which is comparable to 6.66 ms for an OLED at a 120 Hz frame rate. If we slightly increase the TFT frame rate and/or reduce the backlight duty ratio, image blurs can be further suppressed to unnoticeable level. Potential applications of such an image-blur-free LCD for virtual reality, gaming monitors, and TVs are foreseeable.

Abstract:We report a new nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture with an ultra-low rotational viscosity (γ1 = 53.4 mPas @ 35°C), relatively high birefringence (Δn ≈0.15), and moderate dielectric anisotropy (Δe = −2.80 @ 35°C). When employed in a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) projector with RGB light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a sub-millisecond response time is obtained without the need for complicated overdrive circuitry. Such a fast response time enables field sequential color display, which not only triples the optical efficiency and resolution density, but also greatly suppresses the image blur and color breakup. Moreover, the required cell gap is 1.2 µm, which is still manageable for high-yield manufacturing. We believe this mixture would find widespread applications for the emerging augmented reality displays.

Abstract:Three electro-optical modes of nematic liquid crystal (LC) were investigated as applications for LC shutters: the waveguide mode (TN), optical mode interference (OMI), and supertwist nematic (STN). The characteristics of the three modes under dynamic driving were simulated by solving the Ericksen-Leslie hydrodynamic equations numerically. Prototypes of the three types of LC were fabricated for verification. The experimental data show good coincidence with the simulation results. Among the three LC modes, the OMI was found to have the greatest potential for LC shutter applications. The prototype that used the OMI mode showed high contrast, fast response times, low power consumption owing to the pseudomemory effect under an optimal driving scheme, and a low optical retardation of the LC cell.

Abstract:Transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with single cell gap consisting optically compensated bend (OCB) and low twist nematic modes has been studied. Since no double cell gap structure is included in the configuration, the fabrication process is easy and only one more step UV exposure is needed during photoalignment process to produce domains. Based on this new configuration, a transflective LCD with high brightness and high contrast could be obtained.

Abstract:We report a new vertical alignment fringe in-plane switching (VAFIS) liquid crystal device with single alignment on top substrate. This design exhibits submillisecond response time, reasonably high transmittance (~70%), and relatively low operation voltage (15 V). Abstract:We report a new LC with low viscosity and high clearing point (T-c similar to 102 degrees C) for color-sequential projection displays. Using a 1.95-mu m mixed-mode twisted nematic cell, the averaged gray-to-gray response time is less than 1 ms, which is similar to 3.6x faster than the current state of the art. Such a mixed-mode twisted nematic liquid-crystal-on-silicon can be used for near-to-eye wearable projection displays and head-up displays in vehicles.

Abstract:We reported a fast‐response LCD for virtual reality applications. The average gray‐to‐gray (GTG) response time is 0.93ms and its GTG motion‐picture‐response‐time (MPRT) is comparable to OLED. By increasing the frame‐rate and/or decreasing the backlight duty‐ratio, we can achieve MPRT < 1 ms to display fast‐moving objects with unnoticeable motion blurs.

Abstract:A new transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) based on patterned polarizer using photoalignment technique has been proposed. It consists of two optical modes: optically compensated bend (OCB) and low twist nernatic modes, which have the same cell gap. Since no double cell gap structure is included in the configuration, the fabrication process could be simpler compared with conventional double cell gap transflective LCD. With the help of photoalignment technique, patterned polarizer could be obtained and domains for OCB mode and low twist nematic mode could be formed. Based on this new configuration, a transflective LCD with high brightness and high contrast could be achieved.

Abstract:Twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display (LCD) is optimized for transflective liquid crystal displays. This new configuration does not separate the pixel into two sub-pixels of transmissive and reflective mode. Each pixel is partially transmissive and reflective with the help of a semi transparent mirror. The electro-optical characteristics in the transmissive mode and reflective mode match each other, which indicate that the transmissive and reflective functions can be controlled using the same voltage in a transflective LCD. TN LCD configuration exhibits a high contrast ratio, wide viewing angles, fast response time, and suitable for high quality transflective thin film transistor (TFT) LCDs.

Abstract:A ferroelectric liquid-crystal (FLC) display was optimized as a transflective liquid-crystal display (LCD). In this configuration, the single-cell-gap approach was considered. The optimized configuration exhibits a high contrast ratio, wide viewing angles, and achromatic (black/white) switching in both the transmissive and reflective modes. Because no double-cell-gap structure, no subpixel separation, and no patterning polarizers and retarders are included in the configuration, the configuration is easy to fabricate and also possess a perfect dark state. This configuration is also suitable for bistable applications.

Abstract:In order to analyze the image blur of displays, a simple equation to correlate the motion picture response time (MPRT) with LC response time and TFT frame rate is established. Three effective approaches to reduce MPRT are: (1) fast LC response time; (2) high frame rate, and (3) appropriate backlight duty ratio. At 120 Hz frame rate, if the LC's response time is less than 2 ms, then its MPRT would be comparable to that of oLED. LC response time can be greatly improved by employing an ultra-low viscosity LC and developing fast-response LCD modes. To achieve CRT-like MPRT (less than 1.5 ms), we could increase the frame rate or decrease the duty ratio.

When driven at 90Hz with 17% duty ratio, the motion picture response time is 1.5ms, which is comparable with cathode-ray tube, leading to indistinguishable motion blur. Moreover, this device enables high-resolution density because only one thin-film transistor per pixel is needed and it has a built-in storage capacitor.

Using a 1.95-µm mixed-mode twisted nematic (MTN) cell, the average gray-to-gray response time is less than 1ms, which is ∼3.6X faster than the current state of the art. Such an MTN LCoS can be used for near-to-eye wearable projection displays and headup displays in vehicles.

Abstract:Motion picture response time (MPRT) affects the image blurs of thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays and organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays. We derive an analytical equation to correlate MPRT with the liquid crystal (LC)/OLED response time and TFT frame rate. Good agreement between our physical model and experimental results is obtained. Based on our model, we find that if the LC's response time is 2 ms or less, then its MPRT is nearly the same as that of OLED, even if OLED's response time is assumed to be 0. To achieve MPRT comparable to OLEDs, we developed an ultra-low viscosity LC mixture for the vertical alignment mode operation. The measured average gray-to-gray response time is 0.93 ms, and its MPRT at 120 Hz is 6.88 ms. In comparison, OLED's MPRT is 6.67 ms. To further shorten MPRT, we could either increase the frame rate or reduce the backlight duty ratio. Pros and cons of these approaches are discussed.

Abstract:We report a vertically-aligned liquid crystal display (LCD) device with submillisecond response time, high transmittance, and low operation voltage. The top substrate has a common electrode, while the bottom substrate consists of hole-patterned fringing-field-switching (FFS) pixel electrodes. A negative dielectric anisotropy LC is employed. In the voltage-on state, the LC directors are reoriented by the fringing fields surrounding the hole area and by the longitudinal and fringe fields outside the hole area. After design optimization, we are able to achieve 85% peak transmittance under crossed circular polarizers. During the relaxation process, the standing walls exert a strong restoring force, leading to submillisecond gray-to-gray response time. Moreover, this device enables high resolution density because only one thin-film transistor per pixel is needed and the bottom FFS electrode has built-in capacitor. This device is particularly attractive for the emerging virtual reality displays.

Abstract:We report three liquid crystal (LC) mixtures with a wide nematic range (-40 degrees C to similar to 100 degrees C), small visco-elastic coefficient and low activation energy for vehicular displays. Physical properties at different temperatures were characterized. These LCs greatly improve the performance of different display devices in a car: 1) for head-up projection using liquid-crystal-on-silicon with an average gray-to-gray (GTG) response time less than 1 ms at an elevated temperature. 2) The average GTG response time is maintained at similar to 10 ms for fringing field switching LCD at T = 0 degrees C and also similar to 10 ms for twisted nematic LCD at T = -20 degrees C.
