Abstract:Developing effective carbon materials for post-combustion CO(2)capture (PCC) has received great attentions over many recent years, owing to their desirable adsorption-desorption performance and exceptional thermo-oxidative stability compared to virtually any other capture materials typically the wide array of amine-based sorbent materials. However, due to the nature of physical adsorption, virtually none of the carbon materials reported so far can be practically used for PCC applications without deep flue gas cooling to ambient or even lower temperatures in order to achieve appreciable levels of CO(2)uptake capacities at low CO(2)partial pressures. Here, we present a category of 3D hierarchical molecular sieving carbon architectures that are able to operate at realistic flue gas temperatures with exceedingly high reversible CO(2)capacities. The breakthrough CO2-sieving carbon materials are prepared from using a cost-effective and commercially widely available precursor of polymeric polyisocyanurates with a facile one-step compaction-activation methodology. Tested at sensible flue gas temperatures of 40-70 degrees C and a low CO(2)partial pressure of 0.15 bar, the best performing materials are found to have exceedingly high reversible CO(2)capacities of up to 2.30 mmol g(-1)at 40 degrees C and 1.90 mmol g(-1)at 70 degrees C. Advanced characterisations suggest that the unique geometry and chemistry of the easily available precursor material coupled with the characteristics of the compaction-activation protocol used are responsible for the CO2-sieving structures and capacities of the 3D carbon architectures. The findings essentially change the general perception that carbon-based materials can hardly find applications in post-combustion capture due to their low CO(2)uptake capacity at low CO(2)partial pressures and realistic flue gas temperatures.
Microencapsulation of advanced solvents for carbon capture

Abstract:Purpose-designed, water-lean solvents have been developed to improve the energy efficiency of CO2 capture from power plants, including CO2-binding organic liquids (CO2BOLs) and ionic liquids (ILs). Many of these solvents are highly viscous or change phases, posing challenges for conventional process equipment. Such problems can be overcome by encapsulation. Micro-Encapsulated CO2 Sorbents (MECS) consist of a CO2-absorbing solvent or slurry encased in spherical, CO2-permeable polymer shells. The resulting capsules have diameters in the range of 100-600 μm, greatly increasing the surface area and CO2 absorption rate of the encapsulated solvent. Encapsulating these new solvents requires careful selection of shell materials and fabrication techniques. We find several common classes of polymers are not compatible with MECS production, but we develop two custom formulations, a silicone and an acrylate, that show promise for encapsulating water-lean solvents. We make the first demonstration of an encapsulated IL for CO2 capture. The rate of CO2 absorption is enhanced by a factor of 3.5 compared to a liquid film, a value that can be improved by further development of shell materials and fabrication techniques.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon capture is widely recognised as an essential strategy to meet global goals for climate protection. Although various CO 2 capture technologies including absorption, adsorption and membrane exist, they are not yet mature for post-combustion power plants mainly due to high energy penalty. Hence researchers are concentrating on developing non-aqueous solvents like ionic liquids, CO 2 -binding organic liquids, nanoparticle hybrid materials and microencapsulated sorbents to minimize the energy consumption for carbon capture. This research aims to develop a novel and efficient approach by encapsulating sorbents to capture CO 2 in a cold environment. The conventional emulsion technique was selected for the microcapsule formulation by using 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) as the core sorbent and silicon dioxide as the shell. This paper reports the findings on the formulated microcapsules including key formulation parameters, microstructure, size distribution and thermal cycling stability. Furthermore, the effects of microcapsule quality and absorption temperature on the CO 2 loading capacity of the microcapsules were investigated using a self-developed pressure decay method. The preliminary results have shown that the AMP microcapsules are promising to replace conventional sorbents.

Abstract:Building a carbon–neutral world requires the removal of excess CO2 that has already been dumped into the atmosphere. The technologies have been well established to remove carbon dioxide directly from ambient air, or "direct air capture" (DAC). DAC is still in its infancy, with many challenges remaining. Sorbents are central to the capture of CO2 from ambient air. Many sorbents have been reported to take up CO2, but they all have advantages and disadvantages. Recent advances in material synthesis and surface chemistry have resulted in new generations of CO2 sorbents. Development needs to progress quickly, because global warming will not wait. We summarize recent progress on designed sorbents for CO2 capture from ambient air. There are mainly six typical technologies for DAC, including physical sorption, sorption by strong bases, sorption by amine-modified materials, sorption by aqueous amino acid solution followed by precipitation with a guanidine compound, moisture-swing sorption, and electrochemical-swing sorption. Existing research works have put forward future perspectives and directions of sorbent materials for DAC technologies.

Abstract:The extra CO2 that has already been released into the atmosphere has to be removed in order to create a world that is carbon neutral. Technologies have been created to remove carbon dioxide from wet flue gas or even directly from ambient air, however these technologies are not widely deployed yet. New generations of creative CO2 capture sorbents have been produced as a consequence of recent improvements in material assembly and surface chemistry. We summarize recent progress on water-stable and encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 capture under a wide range of environmental and operating conditions. In particular, newly developed water-stable MOFs and hydrophobic coating technologies are discussed with insights into their materials discovery and the synergistic effects between different components of these hybrid sorbent systems. The future perspectives and directions of water-stable and encapsulated MOFs are also given for Direct Air Capture of CO2 and CO2 capture from wet flue gas.

Abstract:The rising levels of CO2 are unavoidably connected to climate change and its consequences on atmospheric temperatures throughout the world. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a dependable and practical method for capturing carbon emissions from industry. This article introduces the realms of direct air capture, post-combustion carbon capture, and pre-combustion carbon capture. Furthermore, the paper delves into the fascinating world of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with a high porosity, tunable structures, and exceptional adsorption capacities that can effectively absorb substantial quantities of CO2, qualifying them as promising candidates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The synthesis methods and performance evaluation of MOF materials concerning carbon capture were introduced. Some of the challenges associated with MOFs are also discussed, including their reduced stability at high temperatures and sensitivity to moisture. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of carbon capture technologies, highlighting the potential of MOFs while addressing current challenges and opportunities in the field.

Abstract:Emissions reduction and greenhouse gas removal from the atmosphere are both necessary to achieve net-zero emissions and limit climate change.1 There is thus a need for improved sorbents for the capture of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, a process known as direct air capture. In particular, low-cost materials that can be regenerated at low temperatures would overcome the limitations of current technologies. In this work, we introduce a new class of designer sorbent materials known as “charged-sorbents”. These materials are prepared through a battery-like charging process which accumulates ions in the pores of low-cost activated carbons, with the inserted ions then serving as adsorption sites for carbon dioxide adsorption. We use our charging process to accumulate reactive hydroxide ions in the pores of a carbon electrode, and find that the resulting sorbent material can rapidly capture carbon dioxide from ambient air via (bi)carbonate formation. Unlike traditional bulk carbonates, charged-sorbent regeneration can be achieved at low temperatures (90-100 ºC), and the sorbent's conductive nature permits direct Joule heating regeneration2,3 using renewable electricity. Given their highly tailorable pore environments and low cost, we anticipate that charged-sorbents will find numerous potential applications in chemical separations, catalysis, and beyond.

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Abstract:Biomass gasification based on calcium looping sorption enhanced reforming (CLSER) has the advantages of generating syngas with high purity hydrogen and simultaneously capturing CO2 in process. This study first aims to develop a novel synthetic CaO-based sorbent, addressing its tar reduction potential and mechanical strength along with cyclic carbonation reactivity. The novel sorbent was synthesized by integrating CaO with iron catalyst and an inert support based on a two-step sol gel method. Comprehensive properties of the novel sorbent including chemical components, effects on biomass pyrolysis and tar reduction, cyclic CO2 capture reactivity, morphology, and mechanical strength were examined by using various methods and facilities. The characterized chemical and physical properties were also compared with pure CaO and two referenced synthetic sorbents. Results showed that a novel sorbent (Ca-Fe-Al) consisting of CaO, iron oxide (Fe2O3), and mayenite (Ca12Al14O33) was successfully synthesized. Evolutions of tar species and CO2 during wheat-straw pyrolysis were found to be lowered in the presence of Ca-Fe-Al as determined by thermogravimetric Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR). The enhanced evolutions of light gases such as CO, CH4, and CO2 at temperatures higher than 580 degrees C examined by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) indicated the catalysis effects of Ca-Fe-Al on biomass tar cracking and char decomposition. Different from CaO and other synthetic sorbents, Ca-Fe-Al sorbent showed increasing carbonation capacity and reactivity with growing cycle numbers. After being hydrated, the cyclic carbonation performance of Ca-Fe-Al sorbent became superior to other sorbents. Mechanical strength of Ca-Fe-Al sorbent was also greater than that of CaO and was more suitable for long term storage.

Abstract:The excessive emission of CO2 causes severe environmental problems. Sustainable CO2 management based on carbon capture and utilization plays important role in addressing emission-control issue. Among various routes, synergistic coupling between CO2 capture and conversion brings prospects for energy conservation by simultaneously avoiding the energy-intensive regeneration, compression and transportation steps in conventional sequential pathway. Herein, this review summarizes the state-of-the-art progress in promising materials for integrated capture and conversion of CO2 in terms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and thermochemical CO2 hydrogenation. The integrated electrochemical process eliminates the critical issues faced by CO2 gas-fed electrolysers, and integrated thermochemical process performing in a single reactor under isothermal conditions benefits from lower energy consumption and less capital investment. Rational design and precise manipulation of key adsorbents/absorbents and catalysts and the influence of interactions between them are discussed. Several considerations are put forward from industrial application perspectives and potential development directions of materials and systems that boost the high selectivity towards valuable products. This review highlights the major challenges and emerging opportunities in integrated CO2 capture and utilization systems, which provides guidance for future investigations.

Abstract:Climate change is a growing threat to civilization. The major anthropogenic greenhouse gas is CO2, which is emitted principally from the combustion of mineral hydrocarbons. By 2100, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is expected to rise twofold due to increased vehicular emissions, deforestation, chemical processes, and fossil fuel-fired power plants. To this end, there is an urgent demand for adopting CO2 emissions mitigation strategies. Worldwide efforts have resulted in developing new and affordable CO2 reduction methods. The significant levels of CO2 released into the atmosphere can be diminished using diverse liquid and/or solid materials. The commonly used liquid sorption routes require expensive regeneration and produce harmful by-products. Therefore, this review focuses on the use of carbon-based materials (CBMs) for CO2 capture. In principle, CBMs have the potential for industrial applications due to their cost efficiency, desirable regeneration, and ability to physically uptake considerable amounts of CO2. The present paper aims to discuss the fundamental mechanism of CO2 capture on the most commonly investigated CBMs in the last five years. Besides, it provides a comprehensive study of significant progress in designing and synthesizing CBMs, including nanotubes, aerogels, composites, and biomass derivatives, with their adsorption potential for CO2. Noteworthy, progress has been made in this subject; nevertheless, further investigations are still necessary. Finally, several perspectives are discussed in light of recent studies regarding sustainable CO2 capture development.

Developing High-Capacity Solid "Molecular Basket" Sorbents for Selective CO2 Capture and Separation

Abstract:ConspectusSince carbon-based energy continues to dominate (over 80%) the global primary energy supply, carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) is deemed to be a promising and viable option to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, for which CO2 capture is critical to the overall success of CCUS. Although liquid amine scrubbing is a mature technology for carbon capture, it is energy-intensive and costly due to energy consumption in solvent heating and water evaporation apart from the energy needed to break amine-CO2 bonding. To address this challenge, Song's group developed a new design approach for adsorptive CO2 capture and separation, namely, "molecular basket" sorbents (MBS), without the need for dealing with solvent heating and water evaporation. The solid MBS consisting of polymeric amines (such as PEI) immobilized into nanoporous materials (such as SBA-15) possesses a high capacity for CO2 capture with high selectivity, fast kinetics, and good regenerability. Consequently, MBS can greatly reduce energy consumption and carbon capture cost. Conventional adsorbents such as zeolites, activated carbon, alumina, and silica have low adsorption capacities, and their use of CO2 adsorption requires prior removal of moisture and cooling of flue gas (∼35 °C). On the contrast, the CO2 sorption capacity of MBS can even be promoted by the presence of moisture/steam and reaches the best performance closer to flue gas temperature (∼75 °C). This Account presents an overview of our research progress in the material development and fundamental understanding of MBS for CO2 capture and the separation of CO2 from various gas streams. It begins with an illustration of the MBS concept, followed by efforts to improve the performance and pilot-scale demonstration of MBS for CO2 capture. With the systematic characterization of MBS by various ex situ and in situ techniques, a better understanding is developed for the CO2 sorption process mechanistically. Furthermore, this Account demonstrates how the fundamental understanding of the CO2 sorption mechanism promotes the further development of more robust and advanced sorbent materials with improved CO2 sorption capacity, kinetics of sorption and desorption, and cyclic stability. Finally, an outlook is provided for the future design and development of novel sorbent materials and the CO2 sorption process for various gas streams including flue gas, biogas, air, and hydrogen streams.
Porous Core‐membrane Microstructured Nanomaterial Composed of Deep Eutectic Solvents and MOF‐808 for CO2 Capture

Abstract:A series of porous core‐membrane microstructured nanomaterials, constructed by deep eutectic solvent (DES) membrane and porous MOF‐808 core via liquid surface tensions and electrostatic interactions, are introduced for carbon dioxide capture with the sorption mechanism coupling of diffusion, physisorption, and chemisorption. MOF‐808 as the porous core dramatically improves the diffusion interactions for DES membranes, hence significantly enhancing the sorption performance of DESs. Although MEA‐TPAC‐7 owns the maximum sorption capacity among all the DESs, it is only 4.39 mmol/g at 2.4 bar and further attenuates by fastidious diffusion interactions when increasing viscosity or dose. The sorption capacities of DES@MOF‐120 are 5.18 mmol/g at 3.0 bar and 4.78 mmol/g at 2.4 bar without apparent sorption hysteresis in pressure swing sorption, which are substantially improved contrasted to MEA‐TPAC‐7. The sorption isotherms are reconstructed via Sips models considering surface heterogeneity with regression correlation coefficients over 0.9454 to forecast maximum sorption capacity over 6.33 mmol/g.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been a growing threat to human society. Selective capture of CO2 remains challenging with global importance. Recent works on porous materials demonstrated their potential and effectiveness in ameliorating the CO2 problem. This review will summarize the progress in advanced porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers with tailored pore microenvironment and functionality for selective capture of CO2 over the past decade. The application of porous adsorbents for CO2 capture under important scenarios such as flue streams, biogas and direct air capture is presented. We discuss the design strategies for custom-made structure and functionality of porous materials that have led to high-performance CO2 capture with the separation efficiency (e.g., high capacity, selectivity, molecular sieving, moisture resistance) as well as efficient regeneration performance. In addition, this review also concludes the current existing challenges combined with potential directions for future development of porous materials towards industrial CO2 capture.

Abstract:Global investment in counteracting climate change has galvanized increasing interest in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) as a versatile emissions mitigation technology. As decarbonization efforts accelerate, CCS can target the emissions of large point-source emitters, such as coal- or natural gas-fired power plants, while also supporting the production of renewable or low-carbon fuels. Furthermore, CCS can enable decarbonization of difficult-to-abate industrial processes and can support net CO2 removal from the atmosphere through bioenergy coupled with CCS or direct air capture. Here we review the development of porous materials as next-generation sorbents for CO2 capture applications. We focus on stream- and sector-specific challenges while highlighting case studies within the context of the rapidly shifting energy landscape. We conclude with a discussion of key needs from the materials community to expand deployment of carbon capture technologies.

Abstract:Developing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is a promising route to tackle the rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Capturing CO2 at high temperature by solid sorbents is attractive in both precombustion and post-combustion scenarios. This paper highlights the importance of CO2 sorption kinetics and reviews the published research available on the calcium-based sorbents, magnesium-based sorbents, layered double hydroxide sorbents and alkali ceramic-based sorbents. Insights are provided into the main factors affecting the CO2 sorption kinetics such as reaction and mass transfer mechanism, material microstructures and reaction operating conditions. Finally, a few possible research gaps are identified and recommendations for future research are proposed.

Abstract:The carbon dioxide (CO2) crisis is one of the world's most urgent issues. Meeting the worldwide targets set for CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is crucial. Because it may significantly reduce energy consumption compared to traditional amine-based adsorption capture, adsorption dependant CO2 capture is regarded as one of the most hopeful techniques in this paradigm. The expansion of unique, critical edge adsorbent materials has received most of the research attention to date, with the main objective of improving adsorption capacity and lifespan while lowering the temperature of adsorption, thereby lowering the energy demand of sorbent revival. There are specific materials needed for each step of the carbon cycle, including capture, regeneration, and conversion. The potential and efficiency of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in overcoming this obstacle have recently been proven through research. In this study, we pinpoint MOFs' precise structural and chemical characteristics that have contributed to their high capture capacity, effective regeneration and separation processes, and efficient catalytic conversions. As prospective materials for the next generation of energy storage and conversion applications, carbon-based compounds like graphene, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes are receiving a lot of interest. Their distinctive physicochemical characteristics make them suitable for these popular study topics, including structural stability and flexibility, high porosity, and customizable physicochemical traits. It is possible to precisely design the interior of MOFs to include coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, certain heteroatoms, covalent functionalization, various building unit interactions, and integrated nanoscale metal catalysts. This is essential for the creation of MOFs with improved performance. Utilizing the accuracy of MOF chemistry, more complicated materials must be built to handle selectivity, capacity, and conversion all at once to achieve a comprehensive solution. This review summarizes, the most recent developments in adsorption-based CO2 combustion capture, the CO2 adsorption capacities of various classes of solid sorbents, and the significance of advanced carbon nanomaterials for environmental remediation and energy conversion. This review also addresses the difficulties and potential of developing carbon-based electrodes for energy conversion and storage applications.
