Abstract:The presence of filler in cellulosic paper usually decreases the paper strength, which has been limiting the filler loading beyond a critical level in papermaking process and increasing production cost accordingly. In order to increase filler content in cellulosic paper without sacrificing paper properties, a novel and brief pre-flocculation process was employed in this study. Specifically speaking, the lime mud (LM) suspension was mixed and pre-flocculated with the commonly used wet-end additives including cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), cationic starch, and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) successively before it was added to the paper stock for handsheet preparation. Handsheets filled with the pre-flocculated or native LM were prepared and their properties were compared. The experimental results showed that the pre-flocculation process resulted in larger LM flocs with higher zeta potential and relatively higher filler retention. The tensile strength and bursting strength of handsheets filled with the pre-flocculated LM were significantly improved compared to those of native LM-filled handsheets and the optical properties almost remained the same, but the air permeability decreased. In addition, the paper formation was also superior to that of paper filled with native LM.
