Abstract:Antifog polyethylene (PE) films are widely used as covers for greenhouse structures because they can eliminate the multiple adverse effects of the fogging phenomenon. Herein, we propose a way to enhance the shelf life of antifog PE films by delaying the migration of antifogging agents using polymer microspheres. Cross-linked poly(maleic anhydride-styrene-divinylbenzene) microspheres (PMSD) were prepared by self-stabilized precipitation polymerization (2SP) and then converted into PMSD grafted with methoxy polyethylene glycol (mPEG) of different chain lengths (PMSD-g-mPEG). PMSD-g-mPEG microspheres were incorporated into PE films with an antifogging agent, and the properties of the prepared antifog PE films were investigated in detail. Scanning electron microscopy displayed the good dispersion state of PMSD-g-mPEG at low loadings and its positive correlation with mPEG chain length. Accelerated dripping experiments and contact angle tests showed that PMSD-g-mPEG2000 microspheres can exert the best effect in delaying the migration of antifogging agents, giving rise to a 36% improvement in dripping duration under optimized conditions. In addition, PMSD-g-mPEG2000 microspheres do not affect the optical, mechanical, and thermal properties of antifog PE films obviously.

Abstract:After polymerization, the un-reacted hydrocarbons must be purged to comply with environmental regulations and ensure the safety of our products. The diffusion behaviors of hydrocarbons in PE have been studied extensively. However, it's still difficult to find appropriate values needed. There are several reasons; first, the values measured by different methods may differ largely. Second, in some literatures, D is the self-diffusion coefficients, not the mutual ones. Diffusion in PE films has been studied a lot, in the background of membrane separation, while diffusion in PE particles is seldom studied. In the article, D of i-C 5, C 6H 12, C 6H 14 in PE particles were measured with an advanced microbalance - intelligent gravimetric analyzer, Nl 2 as a bypassing gas. The first step was choosing the appropriate rate of Nl 2, making sure the external diffusion was eliminated. The correlation between D and temperature was studied according to the Arrhenius equation, showing that diffusion was faster under higher temperature. It was also found that the smaller molecular, such as i-C 5 didn't always diffuse faster than the larger ones. The relationships of D and the crystallinity of PE were agreed with the Flory free volume theory. Considering that the crystallinity got by different methods may differ, so D was further connected with the density and melt index values. With the increasing of density, D decreased. D seemed have no relationship with melt index. As we known, the real PE particles' sizes are not uniform. So we also measured D of PE particles with different sizes. It was showed that D was linear with the square of particle size, nothing to do with the size distribution. The pressure effect could be neglected under the purging conditions.

Abstract:The self-diffusion coefficients of C6-C16 long-chain -olefins and their mixtures in semi-crystalline polyethylene were measured through the pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-NMR). The effects of chain length, polyethylene (PE) type, and co-monomer type in PE on the diffusion coefficients were investigated. Moreover, the influence of halohydrocarbon, cycloalkanes, and arene solvents on the diffusion coefficients of C12 -olefin in PE was characterized. The results have demonstrated that the diffusion coefficient of the single-component -olefin in PE decreases exponentially with the increase of the carbon number of -olefin, and the crystallinity and crystal morphology of PE play a more important role than the co-monomer type in determining the diffusion coefficients of -olefins. In addition, the apparent diffusion coefficients were used to represent the diffusion behaviors of the -olefin mixtures in PE. Owing to the presence of other hydrocarbon solvents, namely trichloromethane, cyclohexane, and benzene, the diffusion coefficients of C12 long-chain -olefin in PE are significantly enhanced, and such promoting effect of the hydrocarbon solvents in polyolefin elastomer (POE) is much stronger than those in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). Abstract:A migration kinetics study of a series of oligo (oxyethylene) fatty acid esters of various chain lengths in polyethylene film was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Diffusion coefficients (D) were determined as a function of temperature, ethylene oxide (EO) chain length and base resin type. The activation energy of diffusion (Ea) for each oligo (oxyethylene) fatty acid ester was determined using the Arrhenius plot of D dependence on inverse temperature. The correlation between obtained D and the number-averaged molecular weight Mn of oligo (oxyethylene) fatty acid ester was described well by a power law expression (D=bMn−a), and the parameters a and b were determined from experimental data. Two other models, which have the form of an Eyring expression, were derived to express the effects of temperature and EO chain length on the diffusion process of oligo (oxyethylene) fatty acid esters. Diffusivity of oligo (oxyethylene) fatty acid ester in linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) was higher than in high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE).
Improvement of Antifogging of Low Density Polyethylene Film by Photografting Acrylic Acid

Abstract:Mechanism and methods of antifogging of low density polyethylene (LDPE) were discussed. The relationship between the contact angle of photografted LDPE and the irradiation time, and the property of antifogging of LDPE were studied. It was found that the grafting ratio of LDPE in air atmosphere increased greatly with time, whereas the contact angle of grafted polyethylene film decreased greatly and the hydrophilicity increased. When irradiation time was 3 minutes, the grafting ratio of LDPE was 12.1 %; the contact angle of grafted polyethylene film to water was 19.3°and the hydrophilicity of LDPE film was improved obviously. In comparison with the method of adding antifogging agents, the antifogging period of photografted LDPE film was long since the hydrophilic monomer was attached to the LDPE film surface through chemical bonding.

Abstract:The solubility of hydrogen (H-2), ethylene (C2H4), 1-hexene (C6H12), and the mixture of C2H4/1-C6H12 in semicrystalline polyethylene (PE) films is measured using an intelligent gravimetric analyzer (IGA) in combination with prediction equations. For the pure-component sorption in PE, the solubility of C2H4 and 1-C6H12 decreases with the temperature, while that of H-2 exhibits an opposite variation tendency in the temperature range under test. For the C2H4/1-C6H12 mixture, the co-solubility is almost 10% smaller than the sum of the pure-component solubility. 1-C6H12 acts as a co-solvent and C2H4 an antisolvent. Moreover, good consistency has been achieved between the measured data and the prediction results from the Sanchez-Lacombe EOS model, demonstrating the reliability of the measurement approach employed in this work. Abstract:Based on the classical theory of linear and non-equilibrium chromatography process, the infinite dilution diffusion coefficients of dichloromethane, tri-chloromethane, tetra-chloromethane and n-hexane in nascent polyethylene particles were measured in the temperature range from 323.15 K to 358.15 K with inverse gas chromatography (IGC). Polyethylene particles, as obtained from the polymerization reactor, were directly used to prepare packed columns without any change of the polymer morphology. The effects of diffusion temperature, molecular weight of different solvents and polyethylene crystallinity on diffusivity were investigated. It was shown by the IGC results that the diffusion coefficients increased with rising temperature for a particular polymer/solvent system, while decreased with increasing molecular weight of diffusing solvent for homologue solvents, such as dichloromethane, tri-chloromethane and tetra-chloromethane. The crystallinity of semicrystalline polyethylene also affected the diffusion coefficients significantly in the way that higher crystallinity corresponded to lower diffusion coefficients for both dichloromethane and n-hexane. The measured diffusion coefficients were compared with model predicted values and good agreement was found, indicating the reported IGC method in this work had good reliability.

Abstract:Pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG NMR) has been performed to study the diffusion of organic solvents into semicrystalline polyethylene particles. Self-diffusion coefficients in different domains of the sample can be extracted through a bi-exponential fit to the echo intensity attenuation, which allows the precise determination of the tortuosity of the polyethylene particles. Further exploration comes from the measurements with branched polyethylene particles and it was found that the diffusion in polymer phase contributed significantly to the slow component of the exponential decay curve.

Abstract:Diffusion coefficients of four organic solvents: dichloromethane, trichloromethane, tetrachloromethane and n-hexane in polyethylene particles at infinite dilution were determined by use of inverse gas chromatography (IGC). The polymer particles were used as supplied by the producer to pack the chromatographic columns. This allowed a direct measurement of the interested properties in a particle with the same morphology obtained at the reactor outlet. The particle morphology was investigated and classical mathematical model for chromatographic process was adopted based upon the analysis of particle microstructure. It was found that the limitation step for mass transfer was in the polymer matrix rather than in macropores, and when interpreted in terms of diffusion coefficients for spherical particles, the measured diffusion coefficients compared favourably with predicted values from literature relationships and free volume theory.

Abstract:The diffusion of five flavor organic molecules, including D-limonene, myrcene, ethyl hexanoate, 2-nonanone, and linalool in low density polyethylene (LDPE) film were investigated by combined experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies. The diffusion coefficients derived from the prediction model, experimental determination, and MD simulation were compared, and the related microscopic diffusion mechanism was investigated. The effects of the presence of the flavor organic molecules on the diffusion of O2 and H2O in polyethylene (PE) were also studied by MD simulation. Results show that: The diffusion of five flavor molecules in LDPE is well followed to Fick’s second law by the immersion experiment; MD simulation indicates the dual mode diffusion mechanism of the flavor molecules is in LDPE; the diffusion coefficients from MD simulation are close to those from the experimental determination, but are slightly larger than those values; the presence of the flavor organic molecules hinders the diffusion of O2 and H2O, which can be well explained from the fraction of free volume (FFV) and interaction energy calculation results derived from MD simulation.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the development of a novel modification method of commonly used antifog (AF) additives such as glycerol monooleate (GMO) and sorbitan monooleate (SMO). In this method, the AF organic molecules were grafted to vinyl silane, methacryl-oxypropyl-trimethoxy-silane (MEMO), to form MEMO grafted GMO (MEMO-g-GMO) and MEMO grafted SMO (MEMO-g-SMO). A thorough study of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) containing the modified AF (LLDPE/MEMO-g-AF) was performed, including investigation of the additives' migration from the LLDPE matrix.Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform IR (FTIR) measurements showed a successful grafting of GMO and SMO to MEMO. Thermal analysis showed that 1 part per hundred parts resin (phr) MEMO-g-GMO has no effect on the thermal decomposition of LLDPE. According to hot fog test results, it was found that only LLDPE films containing 1phr MEMO-g-GMO exhibited excellent antifog performance, while LLDPE films containing 1phr MEMO-g-SMO exhibited poor antifog performance. It was found that LLDPE/MEMO-g-GMO system is characterized by a slower AF migration rate and a lower diffusion coefficient, compared to the reference system, LLDPE/GMO; these results are well correlated with the hot fog test results. Morphological studies revealed a fine dispersion of the MEMO-g-GMO in the polymer.

Abstract:The diffusion behavior of ethylene in polyethylene is of great importance for the polymerization and degassing of polyethylene (PE) industry. Based on the gravimetric sorption and desorption measurement approach, an intelligent gravimetric analyzer is applied to obtain the solubility and diffusion coefficients of ethylene in solid low-density PE (LDPE) with different melt indices at 30 degrees C to 70 degrees C, 0 to 4 atm and in molten LDPE at 160 degrees C to 230 degrees C, 0 to 4 atm, respectively. Results indicate that both the solubility and diffusion coefficients of ethylene in solid LDPE are smaller than those in molten LDPE, while the dissolution enthalpy and diffusion activation energy of ethylene in solid LDPE are higher. In addition, one- and two-dimensional diffusion models are built and the effects of particle size, polymer properties, and operation conditions are systematically investigated on the diffusion behaviors of ethylene in solid and molten LDPE.

Abstract:This paper summarizes a study of controlled migration of an antifog (AF) additive; sorbitan monooleate (SMO), from linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) films containing a compatibilizer, LLDPE grafted maleic anhydride (LLDPE‐g‐MA). LLDPE/LLDPE‐g‐MA/SMO blends were prepared by melt compounding. Bulk and surface properties of compression molded LLDPE films containing SMO and LLDPE‐g‐MA were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. Thermal properties were investigated using a thermal gravimetric analyzer. Diffusion coefficient (D) was calculated, and AF properties were characterized using a “hot fog” test. Compression molded films were characterized for their morphology using high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy, and rheological properties were measured using a parallel‐plate rotational rheometer. It was found that the LLDPE/LLDPE‐g‐MA/SMO systems are characterized by a slower SMO migration rate, a lower diffusion coefficient, and lower contact angle values compared with LLDPE/SMO blends. These results are well correlated with results of a hot fog test. Morphological studies revealed a very fine dispersion of SMO in the LLDPE films, when 3 phr LLDPE‐g‐MA was combined with 1 phr SMO. Thermal analysis results show that the incorporation of 3 phr LLDPE‐g‐MA and 1 phr SMO significantly increases the decomposition temperature of the blend at T > 400°C. At high shear rates, the LLDPE blends show that the AF and the compatibilizer have a lubrication effect on LLDPE. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Water diffusion through low density polyethylene (LDPE) film was investigated by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) over a temperature range of 25-80 degrees C. The 2DCOS spectra of water diffusion in LDPE at different temperatures were very similar. The broad OH stretching vibration (v(OH)) was split into four bands assigned to three different types of water molecules, namely, bulk water, cluster water, and free water, which will be defined. It appeared that as water molecules disperse in LDPE, cluster water with moderate hydrogen bonds diffused faster than bulk water with strong hydrogen bonds. Additionally, the hydrogen bonds between water molecules may have been further weakened or even broken to form free water, possibly due to limited free volume. On the basis of a Fickian model, the diffusion coefficients could be calculated from overall, fast and slow diffusion process, respectively. The diffusion coefficients were observed to increase with temperature, possibly due to increased swelling of molecular chain, more free volume, and reduced size of the penetrants.

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based anti-fogging layer has been successfully developed with an impressive long shelflife by remarkably increasing the wettability of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films for agricultural greenhouses application. The plasma treatment of LDPE films was initially implemented, followed by the solution casting method. Tris-buffered saline (TBS) was added for enhancing the interaction between the anti-fogging agents and PVA polymer. Silica nanoparticles were used to enhance the stability of the layer. Time-domain NMR clarified the homogeneous silica distributed. The results show an increase in bound water fractions promotes silica distribution homogeneously. Also, obtained films become super-hydrophilic, having a contact angle less than 2 degrees without water droplets formation under the hot fog test, for 1 month at 60 degrees C. The use of a unique PVA-TBS/Surfactant-SiO2 based anti-fogging agent shows excellent performance of LDPE films, which provides a key in solving the problem of fogging for agriculture greenhouses.

Abstract:The influences of both temperature and external flow field on film blowing have been studied with a combination of a custom-built film blowing device and in situ synchrotron radiation small-and wide-angle X-ray scattering techniques. Polyethylene (PE) with different structural topologies, namely linear (MPE) and long-chain branched polyethylene (LPE), was used here with different responses to temperature and flow. The MPE film shows a spherulite-like superstructure with low orientation independent of take-up ratio (TUR), while the LPE has a typical row-nucleated structure at high TUR. But for LPE film obtained at low TUR, it exhibits the combination of both crystal morphologies. Further analysis of the microscopic structural evolution of PE during film blowing by synchrotron X-ray scattering reveals three different types of network evolution: (i) the temperature-induced crystallization (TIC) dominated process (MPE); (ii) the flow-induced crystallization (FIC) dominated process (LPE with high TUR); and (iii) nucleation and growth determined by the coupling effects of both temperature and flow (LPE with low TUR). The current results are expected to guide the processing of film blowing as well as provide a new viewpoint for FIC study under far-from-equilibrium conditions.
Crystalline structure and morphology of biaxially oriented polypropylene film under the coexistence of organic silica particles and its influence on the adsorption diffusion of polar solvent molecules

Abstract:In this article, a silica/EVA/PP composite was prepared by melt‐blending nanosilica with polypropylene, and a surface‐modified BOPP film was prepared by using this as raw material. SEM studies have shown the special microscopic morphology of the surface and its cross section. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) characterized and analysed crystallinity, molecular orientation, and grain size in the modified film. Furthermore, the presence of microholes in the modified film was verified by positron annihilation spectroscopy. The results show that compared with the unmodified films, the modified BOPP films have higher crystallinity and smaller grain size. Its dense surface structure and reticular fibre bundle structure make the diffusion coefficient and solubility of ethyl acetate small in the film. The mechanical properties, barrier properties, heat resistance, and ink adhesion of this film have been significantly improved. Modified film can be used as the food packaging film which has high performance and low residue. In this article, a silica/EVA/PP composite was prepared by melt‐blending nanosilica with polypropylene, and a surface modified BOPP film was prepared by using this as raw material. As shown in micrographs of fracture surface of BOPP films, the shell layer of the modified film is more dense and continuous than the unmodified BOPP film. The dense surface structure prevents the diffusion and dissolution of small molecules such as ethyl acetate into the modified film in order to reduce the solvent residue.

Abstract:The polylactic acid (PLA) resin Ingeo 4032D was selected as the research object, with a focus on PLA modification by using polymers such as linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EPDM-g-GMA), by using fillers such as nano calcium carbonate and zeolite. In order to characterize the deposition effect of Al2O3 on the film surface by plasma-assisted atomic layer deposition, Bio-oriented PLA (BOPLA) with more uniform thickness than blown film was purchased for study. The mechanical properties, friction coefficient, surface contact angle and water vapour transmission rate of the modified PLA film were compared and discussed. The aim was to find out the most influencing factors of film's water vapour resistance.

Abstract:A new antifog coating made of pullulan is described in this work. The antifog properties are discussed in terms of wettability, surface chemistry/morphology, and by quantitative assessment of the optical properties (haze and transparency) before and after fog formation. The work also presents the results of antifog tests simulating the typical storage conditions of fresh foods. In these tests, the antifog efficiency of the pullulan coating was compared with that of two commercial antifog films, whereas an untreated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film was used as a reference. The obtained results revealed that the pullulan coating behaved as a "wetting enhancer", mainly due to the low water contact angle (∼24°), which in turn can be ascribed to the inherent hydrophilic nature of this polysaccharide, as also suggested by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. Unlike the case of untreated LDPE and commercial antifog samples, no discrete water formations (i.e., droplets or stains) were observed on the antifog pullulan coating on refrigeration during testing. Rather, an invisible, continuous and thin layer of water occurred on the biopolymer surface, which was the reason for the unaltered haze and increased transparency, with the layer of water possibly behaving as an antireflection layer. As confirmed by atomic force microscopy analysis, the even deposition of the coating on the plastic substrate compared to the patchy surfacing of the antifog additives in the commercial films is another important factor dictating the best performance of the antifog pullulan coating.
