Three Dimensional Reconstruction Using a Lenslet Light Field Camera

Abstract:A novel method is proposed in this paper to accurately reconstruct the three-dimensional scenes by using a passive single-shot exposure with a lenslet light field camera. This method has better performance of 3D scenes reconstruction with both defocus and disparity depth cues captured by light field camera. First, the light field data is used to refocus and shift viewpoints to get a focal stack and multi-view images. In refocusing procedure, the phase shift theorem in the Fourier domain is first introduced to substitute shift in spatial domain, and sharper focal stacks can be obtained with less blurriness. Thus, 3D scenes can be reconstructed more accurately. Next, through multi-view images, disparity depth cues are obtained by performing correspondence measure. Then, the focal stack is used to compute defocus depth cues by focus measure based on gray variance. Finally, the focus cost is built to integrate both defocus and disparity depth cues, and the accurate depth map is estimated by using Graph Cuts based on the focus cost. Using this accurate depth map and all-in-focus image, the 3D structure in real world are accurately reconstructed. Our method is verified by a number of synthetic and real-world examples captured with a dense camera array and a Lytro light field camera.

Abstract:Recent years have seen the rapid growth of new approaches to optical imaging, with an emphasis on extracting three-dimensional (3D) information from what is normally a two-dimensional (2D) image capture. Perhaps most importantly, the rise of computational imaging enables both new physical layouts of optical components and new algorithms to be implemented. This paper concerns the convergence of two advances: the development of a transparent focal stack imaging system using graphene photodetector arrays, and the rapid expansion of the capabilities of machine learning including the development of powerful neural networks. This paper demonstrates 3D tracking of point-like objects with multilayer feedforward neural networks and the extension to tracking positions of multi-point objects. Computer simulations further demonstrate how this optical system can track extended objects in 3D, highlighting the promise of combining nanophotonic devices, new optical system designs, and machine learning for new frontiers in 3D imaging.

Abstract:Flat lenses when compared to curved surface lenses have the advantages of being aberration free and they offer a compact design necessary for a myriad of electro-optical applications. In this paper we present flat and ultra-thin lenses based on graphene, the world’s thinnest known material. Monolayers and low number multilayers of graphene were fabricated into Fresnel zones to produce Fresnel zone plates which utilize the absorption properties of graphene for their operation. The working of the lens and their performance in the visible and terahertz regimes was analyzed computationally. Experimental measurements were also performed to characterize the lens in the visible regime and a good agreement was obtained with the simulations. The work demonstrates the principle of atom thick graphene-based lenses, with perspectives for ultra-compact integration.

Abstract:Single crystal graphene (SCG) as a transparent conductive electrode material with a relatively strong liquid crystal molecule anchoring energy is expected to provide remarkable improvements to the functionalities of electro-optical devices. Here, we efficiently grew macroscale SCG on Cu(111) and transferred it onto a silica substrate to fabricate a liquid-crystal microlens array (LCMLA) integrated with an arrayed photodetector. As shown, the LC molecules can be aligned along a desired direction over the SCG electrode with the zigzag lattice of the graphene. Furthermore, we demonstrate a prototypical plenoptic camera using the SCG-LCMLA with a controlled unidirectional LC alignment. Dual mode imaging to acquire both two-dimensional and light field images was realized by integrating photodetectors with the electrically adjustable SCG-LCMLA.

Abstract:Light-field cameras allow the acquisition of both the spatial and angular components of the light. This has a wide range of applications from image refocusing to 3D reconstruction of a scene. The conventional way to perform such acquisitions leads to a strong spatio-angular resolution limit. Here we propose a computational version of the light-field camera. We perform a one gigapixel photo-realistic diffraction limited light-field acquisition, that would require the use of a one gigapixel sensor were the acquisition to be performed with a conventional light-field camera. This result is mostly limited by the total acquisition time, as our system could in principle allow $\sim$Terapixel reconstructions to be achieved. The reported result presents many potential advantages, such as the possibility to perform large depth of field light-field acquisitions, realistic refocusing along a very wide range of depths, very high dimensional super-resolved image acquisitions, and large depth of field 3D reconstructions.

Abstract:Light field imaging can encode abundant scene information, including the intensity and direction of light rays, into 4D light field images. However, the limited number of sensors in commercial light field cameras leads to a trade-off between spatial and angular resolutions. In this paper, an angular super-resolution framework is proposed to synthesize new views and overcome hardware restrictions. First, light field intrinsic feature convolution is proposed to extract intrinsic information, i.e., scene content, complete view correlations, and epipolar structures. Consequently, spatial, angular, and cross-domain information can be preserved in the extracted features. Second, the spatial-angular and depth streams are proposed based on the light field intrinsic feature convolution to synthesize high angular resolution light fields. The spatial-angular stream utilizes the light field intrinsic information to improve the angular resolution, whereas the depth stream disentangles the geometric information from the extracted light field intrinsic features, which is used to warp the given sub-aperture images to the new view positions. Both streams can synthesize high-quality intermediate results, where the intrinsic and geometric information are utilized separately. Finally, a confidence-based stream fusion module is proposed to fuse the outputs from the two streams, achieving the joint employment of light field intrinsic and geometric information and solving the problem of insufficient information exploration in the current methods. We conduct a series of experiments to validate the effectiveness of each component in the framework and demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance in various scenes.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Graphene is an ideal material for high-performance photodetectors because of its superior electronic and optical properties. However, graphene's weak optical absorption limits the photoresponsivity of conventional photodetectors based on planar (two-dimensional or 2D) back-gated graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs). Here, we report a self-rolled-up method to turn 2D buried-gate GFETs into three-dimensional (3D) tubular GFETs. Because the optical field inside the tubular resonant microcavity is enhanced and the light-graphene interaction area is increased, the photoresponsivity of the resulting 3D GFETs is significantly improved. The 3D GFET photodetectors demonstrated room-temperature photodetection at ultraviolet, visible, mid-infrared, and terahertz (THz) regions, with both ultraviolet and visible photoresponsivities of more than 1 A W-1 and photoresponsivity of 0.232 A W-1 at 3.11 THz. The electrical bandwidth of these devices exceeds 1 MHz. This combination of high photoresponsivity, a broad spectral range, and high speed will lead to new opportunities for 3D graphene optoelectronic devices and systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel approach for high-resolution light field microscopy imaging by using a camera array. In this approach, we apply a two-stage relay system for expanding the aperture plane of the microscope into the size of an imaging lens array, and utilize a sensor array for acquiring different sub-apertures images formed by corresponding imaging lenses. By combining the rectified and synchronized images from 5 × 5 viewpoints with our prototype system, we successfully recovered color light field videos for various fast-moving microscopic specimens with a spatial resolution of 0.79 megapixels at 30 frames per second, corresponding to an unprecedented data throughput of 562.5 MB/s for light field microscopy. We also demonstrated the use of the reported platform for different applications, including post-capture refocusing, phase reconstruction, 3D imaging, and optical metrology.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional material, is expected to enable broad-spectrum and high-speed photo-detection because of its gapless band structure, ultrafast carrier dynamics and high mobility. We demonstrate a multispectral active infrared imaging by using a graphene photodetector based on hybrid response mechanisms at room temperature. The high-quality images with optical resolutions of 418 nm, 657 nm and 877 nm and close-to-theoretical-limit Michelson contrasts of 0.997, 0.994, and 0.996 have been acquired for 565 nm, 1550 nm, and 1815 nm light imaging measurements by using an unbiased graphene photodetector, respectively. Importantly, by carefully analyzing the results of Raman mapping and numerical simulations for the response process, the formation of hybrid photocurrents in graphene detectors is attributed to the synergistic action of photovoltaic and photo-thermoelectric effects. The initial application to infrared imaging will help promote the development of high performance graphene-based infrared multispectral detectors.

Abstract:Integrated circuits based on complementary metal-oxide–semiconductors (CMOS) are at the heart of the technological revolution of the past 40 years, enabling compact and low-cost microelectronic circuits and imaging systems. However, the diversification of this platform into applications other than microcircuits and visible-light cameras has been impeded by the difficulty to combine semiconductors other than silicon with CMOS. Here, we report the monolithic integration of a CMOS integrated circuit with graphene, operating as a high-mobility phototransistor. We demonstrate a high-resolution, broadband image sensor and operate it as a digital camera that is sensitive to ultraviolet, visible and infrared light (300–2,000 nm). The demonstrated graphene–CMOS integration is pivotal for incorporating 2D materials into the next-generation microelectronics, sensor arrays, low-power integrated photonics and CMOS imaging systems covering visible, infrared and terahertz frequencies.

Abstract:SIGNIFICANCE: High-speed 3D imaging methods have been playing crucial roles in many biological discoveries.AIM: We present a hybrid light-field imaging system and image processing algorithm that can visualize high-speed biological events.APPROACH: The hybrid light-field imaging system uses the selective plane optical illumination, which simultaneously records a high-resolution 2D image and a low-resolution 4D light-field image. The high-resolution 4D light-field image is obtained by applying the hybrid algorithm derived from the deconvolution and phase retrieval methods.RESULTS: High-resolution 3D imaging at a speed of 100-s volumes per second over an imaging field of 250 × 250 × 80 μm3 in the x, y, and z axis, respectively, is achieved with a 2.5 times enhancement in lateral resolution over the entire imaging field compared with standard light-field systems. In comparison to the deconvolution algorithm, the hybrid algorithm addresses the artifact issue at the focal plane and reduces the computation time by a factor of 4.CONCLUSIONS: The new hybrid light-field imaging method realizes high-resolution and ultrafast 3D imaging with a compact setup and simple algorithm, which may help discover important applications in biophotonics to visualize high-speed biological events.

Giant electric field enhancement for plasmonic imaging via graphene based nanoslit optical superlens

Abstract:We present theoretical investigations on designing a simple double nano-slit superlens for dramatically improving imaging quality for advanced plasmonic photolithography through introducing graphene as a plasmonic integrator. It is proposed that more than 235 times enhancement of localized electric field can be assured as the graphene layer is embedded in the designed superlens. It is observed that by introducing graphene for superlensing, dominant enhancement of electric field amplitudes of interference imaging profiles can be observed at a properly designed photoresist with optimal thickness. We further show by systematically examining design parameters for the graphene-based superlens, clarifying the overall geometric and material parameter influences on the plasmonic imaging pattern characteristics. The results are attributed to the unique role of graphene participating in strong hybrid plasmonic cavity coupling modes for supporting localized electric fields of the nanoslit superlensing. This study shows proper designing of graphene-based optical superlens can potentially realize high-quality, low-cost and simple-realized nano-imaging for advanced plasmonic photolithography applications.

Abstract:The implementation of an advanced light receiver is imperative for the widespread application of visible light communication. However, the integration of multifunctional and high-performance visible light receivers is still limited by device structure and system complexity. Herein, a graphene-readout silicon-based microtube photodetector is proposed as the receiver for omnidirectional Mbps-level visible light communication. The integration of graphene-semiconductor material systems simultaneously ensures the effective absorption of incident light and rapid readout of photogenerated carriers, and the device exhibits an ultrafast response speed of 75 ns and high responsivity of 6803 A W-1. In addition, the microtube photodetector realizes the omnidirectional light-trapping and enhanced polarization photodetection. As the receiving end of the visible light communication system, the microtube photodetector achieves a data rate of up to 778 Mbps, a field of view of 140°, and the encrypted visible light communication of polarized light, providing a new possibility for the future development of the internet of things and information security.

Abstract:Light field cameras are unsuitable for further acquisition of high-quality images due to their small depth of field, insufficient spatial resolution, and poor imaging quality. To address these issues, we proposed a novel four-focal-square microlens and light field system. A square aspheric microlens array with four orthogonal focal lengths was designed, in which the aperture of a single lens was 100 μm. The square arrangement improves pixel utilization, the four focal lengths increase the depth of field, and the aspheric improves image quality. The simulations demonstrate pixel utilization rates exceeding 90%, depth-of-field ranges 6.57 times that of a single focal length, and image quality is significantly improved. We have provided a potential solution for improving the depth of field and image quality of the light field imaging system.

Abstract:We demonstrate a graphene-nanotube hybrid flexible photodetector with a high photoresponsivity (similar to 51 A/W) and a fast response (similar to 40 ms) over the visible range. The devices remain stable under severe bending conditions and repetitive bending cycles.

Abstract:While silicon has dominated solid-state electronics for more than four decades, a variety of new materials have been introduced into photonics to expand the accessible wavelength range and to improve the performance of photonic devices. For example, gallium-nitride based materials enable the light emission at blue and ultraviolet wavelengths, and high index contrast silicon-on-insulator facilitates the realization of ultra dense and CMOS compatible photonic devices. Here, we report the first deployment of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon material, as the photo-detection element in a 10 Gbits/s optical data link. In this interdigitated metal-graphene-metal photodetector, an asymmetric metallization scheme is adopted to break the mirror symmetry of the built-in electric-field profile in conventional graphene field-effect-transistor channels, allowing for efficient photo-detection within the entire area of light illumination. A maximum external photo-responsivity of 6.1 mA/W is achieved at 1.55 {\mu}m wavelength, a very impressive value given that the material is below one nanometer in thickness. Moreover, owing to the unique band structure and exceptional electronic properties of graphene, high speed photodetectors with an ultra-wide operational wavelength range at least from 300 nm to 6 {\mu}m can be realized using this fascinating material.

Abstract:We employ ZnSe films and graphene to act as light-absorbing layer and channel, respectively. Low-flexibility yet high-absorbance ZnSe light-absorbing layer makes contribution to the absorbance and have no negative impact on the device flexibility, while high-flexibility graphene films determine the flexibility. As a result, the image sensors based on 4-inch flexible ZnSe/graphene hybrids with a high responsivity of $1.5times 10^{{6}}$ A/W could work stably under the large strain up to 0.2%. This is one order of magnitude larger than that of pure ZnSe films-based devices. More importantly, they make a stable performance under the strain of 0.2% after 10,000 bending cycles or a bending duration of 1000 h.

Abstract:Graphene can be used for wide-broadband photodetectors since its photoresponse spectrum covers from the UV to the terahertz frequencies. A graphene hyperspectral image of West-Lake in Hangzhou, China is shown, indicating the wealth of sufficient information held in the broad spectral domain. The work described in article number 1700463 by Yang Xu, Weida Hu, and co-workers shows potential application in, for example, global climate research, mapping of wetlands, mineral identification, crop analysis, and bathymetry.
