Affecting factors of farmers' willingness to participate in crop insurance in the non-reclamation areas of Heilong Jiang province of China

Abstract:As China's commodity grain base, the northeast grain production area has become a pilot one for policy agricultural insurance and has developed an insurance pattern with local characteristics. Through the survey, however, it was discovered that the insurance rate of the farmers in non-reclamation areas is much lower than those in the reclamation area. This paper, through the method of binary logistic regression makes a detailed analysis on the survey data among the farmers in Hei-lozigjiang Province and comes to the conclusion that among many others, the arable land size, the net annual household income as well as the educational background are the major factors that influence the insurance rate of the farmers in non-reclamation areas farmers with comparatively high income, large size of arable land and high education are more likely to insure. In addition, the evidence shows that the performance of compensation is another factor that influences the farmer's insurance. Therefore, it is hypothesized by this paper that heightened awareness in insurance, increased agricultural insurance subsidies and enlarged size of arable land may ensure a better implementation of agricultural insurance policy.
