Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:Energy scaling of femtosecond fiber lasers has been constrained by nonlinear impairments and optical fiber damage. Reducing the optical irradiance inside the fiber by increasing mode size lowers these effects. Using an erbium-doped higher-order mode fiber with 6000 µm(2) effective area and output fundamental mode re-conversion, we show a breakthrough in pulse energy from a monolithic fiber chirped pulse amplification system using higher-order mode propagation generating 300 µJ pulses with duration <500 fs (FWHM) and peak power >600 MW at 1.55 µm. The erbium-doped HOM fiber has both a record large effective mode area and excellent mode stability, even when coiled to reasonable diameter. This demonstration proves efficacy of a new path for high energy monolithic fiber-optic femtosecond laser systems.

Abstract:Ultrafast lasers are becoming increasingly widespread in science and industry alike. Fiber-based ultrafast laser sources are especially attractive because of their compactness, alignment-free setups, and potentially low costs. However, confining short pulses within a fiber core leads to high intensities, which drive a host of nonlinear effects. While these phenomena and their interactions greatly complicate the design of such systems, they can also provide opportunities for engineering new capabilities. Here, we report a new fiber amplification regime distinguished by the use of a dynamically-evolving gain spectrum as a degree of freedom: as a pulse experiences nonlinear spectral broadening, absorption and amplification actively reshape both the pulse and the gain spectrum itself. The dynamic co-evolution of the field and excited-state populations supports pulses that can broaden spectrally by almost two orders of magnitude and well beyond the gain bandwidth, while remaining cleanly-compressible to their sub-50-fs transform limit. Theory and experiments provide evidence that a nonlinear attractor underlies the management of the nonlinearity by the gain. Further research into the mutual, pulse-inversion propagation dynamics may address open scientific questions and pave the way toward simple, compact fiber sources that produce high-energy, sub-30-fs pulses.

Abstract:The modal weight factors and their changing properties in large-mode-area fibers are investigated when the optical beam propagates from one fiber into another one with a different cross-sectional structure. Based on a weighted mode power superposition theory, a novel scheme of inserting a filter fiber to change the power allocation among the co-existing modes in active fibers is proposed. In order to verify the effectiveness of this method in practical implementations, the mode power propagation of a fiber laser and a fiber amplifier with an inserted filter fiber are calculated, respectively. Compared with the cases without a filter fiber, the numerical results show an obvious suppression effect of high-order modes.

Abstract:In this chapter, we focus on the amplification of continuous-wave single-frequency lasers. In this case, the single-frequency power scaling is mainly limited by the stimulated Brillouin scattering and thermal effects in the amplifying fiber. To address these problems, different schemes have been proposed to suppress the fiber nonlinear and thermal effects, a most popular one is using large mode area active fiber to decrease the laser intensity and thermal energy per unit area. The layout trifurcates into three sections concerning the laser amplification in the 1.0 μm, 1.5 μm, and 2.0 μm regions, which corresponds to the well-known dopants (i.e., erbium, ytterbium, and thulium ions) in optical fiber. In each section, the emission characteristics such as the spectral features of the corresponding rare-earth dopants are first introduced. Then a theoretical mode is established for the analysis of the fiber amplifiers in the three wavelength bands. Finally, experimental progress on single-frequency fiber amplification is introduced and discussed in each section.

Abstract:The scalability of output power and transmission characteristic of high power fiber lasers and amplifiers are limited by nonlinear effects such as stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering and self-phase modulation. These limitations can be overcome through improving the fiber in geometric structure or compositional distribution, doped technology, working conditions etc. This paper firstly discusses the mechanism of production and the properties of power threshold about nonlinear effects of fiber lasers and amplifiers. Then it emphasizes particularly on the new methods and technologies used in nonlinearity management. The new managing way like large-mode-area fiber designing as well as varying doped componments and distribution,direct nanoparticle deposition doping and controlling strain or temperature effects is introduced in detail. Finally, it presents reasonable schemes.

Abstract:Further power scaling of narrow-linewidth fiber lasers is critical for beam combining. Using all-solid photonic bandgap fibers with large effective mode areas and strong higher-order-mode suppression is an interesting approach. Previously, we demonstrated ∼400W single-frequency single-mode power at 1064 nm from a 50/400 photonic bandgap fiber amplifier, limited only by transverse mode instability (TMI). In this work, we demonstrate a TMI-limited single-mode power of 1.37 kW from a monolithic fiber amplifier with a 25/400 photonic bandgap fiber, the highest output power from a photonic bandgap fiber demonstrated to date, to the best of our knowledge. The spectral linewidth is broadened to ∼8GHz to suppress stimulated Brillouin scattering.

Abstract:Multimode fibers provide a promising platform for realizing high-power laser amplifiers with suppressed nonlinearities and instabilities. The potential degradation of optical beam quality has been a major concern for highly multimode fiber amplifiers. We show numerically that the beam propagation factor M2 of a single-frequency multimode fiber amplifier can be reduced to nearly unity by shaping the input or output beam profile with spatial phase-masks. Our method works for narrowband multimode fiber amplifiers with strong gain saturation, pump depletion, random mode coupling and polarization mixing. The numerical results validate our approach of utilizing highly multimode excitation to mitigate nonlinear effects in high-power fiber amplifiers and performing input wavefront shaping to control output beam profile and polarization state.

Abstract:Generation of high-order modes with high quality is important for the application of cylindrical vector beams in fibers. We experimentally demonstrated high-order LP11 mode generation and amplification with a broad bandwidth in an all few-mode fiber laser. A wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) mode selective coupler (MSC) is proposed to achieve efficient mode conversion from LP01 mode to LP11 mode, but also combine high-order LP11 modes at the wavelengths of 980/1550 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the high-order mode oscillation in an all few-mode fiber laser. LP11 mode and cylindrical vector beams including radially and azimuthally polarized beams are obtained with high modal purity. The purity of the generated high-order modes are all in excess of 95%.
Optimal input excitations for suppressing nonlinear instabilities in multimode fibers

Abstract:Wavefront shaping has become a powerful tool for manipulating light propagation in various complex media undergoing linear scattering. Controlling nonlinear optical interactions with spatial degrees of freedom is a relatively recent but growing area of research. A wavefront-shaping-based approach can be used to suppress nonlinear stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and transverse mode instability (TMI), which are the two main limitations to power scaling in high-power narrowband fiber amplifiers. Here we formulate both SBS and TMI suppression as optimization problems with respect to coherent multimode input excitation in a given multimode fiber. We develop an efficient method for finding the globally optimal input excitation for SBS and TMI suppression using linear programming. We theoretically show that optimally exciting a standard multimode fiber leads to roughly an order of magnitude enhancement in output power limited by SBS and TMI, compared to fundamental-mode-only excitation. We find that the optimal mode content is robust to small perturbations and our approach works even in the presence of mode dependent loss and gain. Optimal mode content can be excited in real experiments using spatial light modulators, creating a novel platform for instability-free ultrahigh-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:In order to overcome the limitations of the nonlinear effects and optical damage, the high power active fibers usually have large mode areas. The current main technical means used in large mode area fibers were reviewed, which include the fiber structural design, mode control and selection, and mode transform. Then the basic idea of the various technical means and the primary characteristics of the relevant large mode area fibers were described. On the basis, it was pointed that the difficult problems like mode distortion as well as the high order mode suppression, the integration analysis for laser systems and the fiber fabrications when they were applied in the actual applications. Finally, by comparing the fiber performance characteristic, processing ease, and the study level of the theoretical and experimental aspects, the mode transform with the higher order mode fiber and the gain guiding, index anti-guiding approach are considered to be the two most effective ways to achieve the large mode area fiber lasers. It is possible to improve the mode areas.

Abstract:Independent light propagation through one or multiple modes is commonly considered as a basic demand for mode manipulation in few-mode fiber (FMF)- or multimode fiber (MMF)-based optical systems such as transmission links, optical fiber lasers, or distributed optical fiber sensors. However, the insertion of doped-fiber amplifiers always kills the entire effort by inducing significant modal crosstalk. In this paper, we propose the design of doped-fiber amplifiers in FMF-based systems adopting identical multiple-ring-core (MRC) index profiles for both passive and doped fibers to achieve low modal crosstalk. We develop the direct-glass-transition (DGT) modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) processing for precise fabrication of few-mode erbium-doped fibers (FM-EDFs) with MRC profiles of both refractive index and erbium-ion doping distribution. Then, a few-mode erbium-doped-fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) with a maximum gain of 26.08 dB and differential modal gain (DMG) of 2.3 dB is realized based on fabricated FM-EDF matched with a transmission FMF supporting four linearly polarized (LP) modes. With the insertion of the FM-EDFA, 60 + 60 km simultaneous LP01/LP11/LP21/LP02 01 / LP 11 / LP 21 / LP 02 transmission without inter-modal multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP) is successfully demonstrated. The proposed design of low-modal-crosstalk doped-fiber amplifiers provides, to our knowledge, new insights into mode manipulation methods in various applications. (c) 2024 Chinese Laser Press
Increasing Mode Instability Threshold by Mitigating Driver Noise in High Power Fiber Amplifiers

Abstract:Reduction of mode instability threshold by driver noise has been observed in a 3 kW level high power fiber amplifier system for the first time, which has been confirmed by monitoring the temporal characteristic of the beam profile and the output current. After the onset of mode instability induced by driver noise, the laser beam profiles fluctuated at a characteristic frequency of 0.3 kHz with 50 Hz-spaced frequency lines in the background. Obvious fluctuation in the signal peak of the optical spectrum has also shown up with the onset of mode instability. By employing an alternative driver with built-in filter, the diver noise has been suppressed by nearly 30 dB, and the mode instability threshold has been increased by 25.8%. The evidence of electrical noise lines was absent from the temporal characteristic of the beam profile, only regular frequency component, which demonstrate that the driver noise can be suppressed efficiently by properly designing the driver. The results revealed that the driver noise should be taken into consideration in designing the high power fiber amplifier systems.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an ytterbium-doped fiber laser emitting the single high-order cylindrical vector beams with a high efficiency and a high modal purity based on adaptive modal gain control. By the combination of a high-order pump with a self-designed ytterbium-ring doped fiber, modal dependent gain was tailored and specific transverse mode can be selected in the laser cavity. A model based on multimode propagation-rate equations is built up to demonstrate the behaviors of transverse mode competition in the fiber laser. Modal dependent gain of high-order mode pump are simulated numerically, which agree well with our experiment results. The slope efficiency of the fiber laser reaches 79.61% with a low threshold of 47.73mw. The purity of the generated high-order CVBs are in excess of 95%. Such a strategy enables the controllability of modal gain in a fiber laser and reveals the potential to offer a new and promising way to achieve a high-power fiber laser with an arbitrary single high-order transverse modes output.
A low-loss photonic silica nanofiber for higher-order modes

Abstract:Optical nanofibers confine light to subwavelength scales, and are of interest for the design, integration, and interconnection of nanophotonic devices. Here we demonstrate high transmission (> 97%) of the first family of excited modes through a 350 nm radius fiber, by appropriate choice of the fiber and precise control of the taper geometry. We can design the nanofibers so that these modes propagate with most of their energy outside the waist region. We also present an optical setup for selectively launching these modes with less than 1% fundamental mode contamination. Our experimental results are in good agreement with simulations of the propagation. Multimode optical nanofibers expand the photonic toolbox, and may aid in the realization of a fully integrated nanoscale device for communication science, laser science or other sensing applications.

Abstract:We overview recent advances in the research on spatiotemporal beam shaping in nonlinear multimode optical fibers. An intense light beam coupled to a graded index (GRIN) highly multimode fiber undergoes a series of complex nonlinear processes when its power grows larger. Among them, the lowest threshold effect is the Kerr-induced beam self-cleaning, that redistributes most of the beam energy into a robust bell-shaped beam close to the fundamental mode. At higher powers a series of spectral sidebands is generated, thanks to the phase matching induced by the long period grating due to the periodic self-imaging of the beam and the Kerr effect. Subsequently a broadband and spectrally flat supercontinuum is generated, extending from the visible to the mid-infrared.

Abstract:Advances in optical fiber amplifier for optical network are reviewed in this paper. Considerable progress has been made in optical amplifier technology in recent years. The bandwidth of amplifiers has increased several times and flat gain amplifiers with more than 80 nm of bandwidth have been demonstrated. With the advent of Raman fiber amplifiers, more wider bandwidth is obtained. Progress has also been made in the understanding of amplifier gain dynamics. Several control schemes have been successfully demonstrated to mitigate the signal impairments due to fast power transients in a chain of amplifiers and will be implemented in optical network design. Terrestrial optical systems have ben increasing in transmission capacity. In this review, we focus on the recent progress in some important aspects of several optical fiber amplifier technology.
Efficient generation of Second-order beam Based on angular modulated Long-period fiber grating

Abstract:Higher-order mode generation using long-period fiber grating (LPFG) has a lot of advantages such as simple structure and compatibility with optical fiber system. However, due to the large effective refractive index difference and very small cross-coupling coefficient between fundamental core mode and higher-order core modes in a few-mode fiber, it is difficult to achieve a high coupling efficiency and low insertion loss at the same time. In this paper, we demonstrated a simple model to illustrate the relationship between refractive index (RI) modulation and coupling coefficient in a CO2 laser LPFG fabrication system. Theoretical analysis shows that changing the RI modulation area from semicircle to sector with certain angle can significantly enhance the mode coupling between LP01 and LP21 modes. We also proposed an easy way who can achieve an angular modulation to fabricate LPFG which could generate second-order modes with a high efficiency as well as a low insertion loss. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical analysis. Finally, we get a LPFG mode converter who has a conversion efficiency of over 99% and an insertion loss of only 0.27 dB. Furthermore, the CO2 laser has almost no damage on the fiber structure. This fabrication method and analyzation model has a great guiding significance to regular the coupling coefficient and realize higher-order mode excitation in the future.
