Abstract:Vacancy concentrations c(v) in B2-type Au1-cCdc alloys (0.473<c<10.515) were determined from measurements of density and lattice constant using single crystals and powdered samples. c(v) for slow-cooled single crystals indicates a slight change with composition until near stoichiometry and then a rapid increase (reaches to about 1% at c=0.515). From this, it is confirmed that the point defect in B2 AuCd is of the hybrid type (mixture of the antistructure defect and the triple defect type). Changes in density and lattice constant in the parent B2-phase with ageing were also obtained for slow-cooled (SC) and water-quenched (WQ) samples. These values for WQ samples increase exponentially with ageing and reach to those for SC samples in which they are unchanged. This situation is explained as an annealing-out process of quenched-in vacancies by ageing. The difference in ageing effect in the martensitic state between the SC and WQ samples is discussed.
