Abstract:We study the quantum correlations in a 2D system that possesses a topological quantum phase transition. The quantumness of two-body correlations is measured by quantum discord. We calculate both the correlation of two local spins and that of an arbitrary spin with the rest of the lattice. It is notable that local spins are classically correlated, while the quantum correlation is hidden in the global lattice. This is different from other systems which are not topologically orderd. Moreover, the mutual information and global quantum discord show critical behavior in the topological quantum phase transition.

Abstract:Topological materials refer to solid structures with topologically protected electronic states or other degrees of freedom.A prime example is a Chern insulator in which the occupied bands of states are organized with a non-trivial topology as characterized by a nonzero Chern integer, exhibiting gapless chiral excitations on the boundaries, which are robust against scatterings.In the presence of certain discrete symmetries, such as time reversal or mirror reflection, one can have more general topological classes of insulators exhibiting helical or spin-momentum locked boundary excitations, with a lesser degree of robustness against scatterings [1].

Abstract:The introduction of the concept of topology into condensed matter physics has greatly deepened our fundamental understanding of transport properties of electrons as well as all other forms of quasi particles in solid materials. It has also fostered a paradigm shift from conventional electronic/optoelectronic devices to novel quantum devices based on topology-enabled quantum device functionalities that transfer energy and information with unprecedented precision, robustness, and efficiency. In this article, the recent research progress in topological quantum devices is reviewed. We first outline the topological spintronic devices underlined by the spin-momentum locking property of topology. We then highlight the topological electronic devices based on quantized electron and dissipationless spin conductivity protected by topology. Finally, we discuss quantum optoelectronic devices with topology-redefined photoexcitation and emission. The field of topological quantum devices is only at its infancy, we envision many significant advances in the near future.

Topological symmetry in quantum field theory

Abstract:We introduce a framework for internal topological symmetries in quantum field theory, including "noninvertible symmetries" and "categorical symmetries". This leads to a calculus of topological defects which takes full advantage of well-developed theorems and techniques in topological field theory. Our discussion focuses on finite symmetries, and we give indications for a generalization to other symmetries. We treat quotients and quotient defects (often called "gauging" and "condensation defects"), finite electromagnetic duality, and duality defects, among other topics. We include an appendix on finite homotopy theories, which are often used to encode finite symmetries and for which computations can be carried out using methods of algebraic topology. Throughout we emphasize exposition and examples over a detailed technical treatment.

B-twisted Gaiotto-Witten theory and topological quantum field theory

Abstract:We develop representation theoretic techniques to construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological quantum field theories which model homologically truncated topological B-twists of abelian Gaiotto-Witten theory with linear matter. Our constructions are based on relative modular structures on the category of weight modules over an unrolled quantization of a Lie superalgebra. The Lie superalgebra, originally defined by Gaiotto and Witten, is associated to a complex symplectic representation of a metric abelian Lie algebra. The physical theories we model admit alternative realizations as Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten theories and supergroup Chern-Simons theories and include as particular examples global forms of $\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1)$-Chern-Simons theory and toral Chern-Simons theory. Fundamental to our approach is the systematic incorporation of non-genuine line operators which source flat connections for the topological flavour symmetry of the theory.

On topology changes in quantum field theory and quantum gravity

Abstract:Two singularity theorems can be proven if one attempts to let a Lorentzian cobordism interpolate between two topologically distinct manifolds. On the other hand, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette have given a rigorous definition for quantum field theories (qfts) by means of path integrals. This article uses their results to study whether qfts can be made compatible with topology changes. We show that path integrals over metrics need a finite norm for the latter and for degenerate metrics, this problem can sometimes be resolved with tetrads. We prove that already in the neighborhood of some cuspidal singularities, difficulties can arise to define certain qfts. On the other hand, we show that simple qfts can be defined around conical singularities that result from a topology change in a simple setup. We argue that the ground state of many theories of quantum gravity will imply a small cosmological constant and, during the expansion of the universe, will cause frequent topology changes. Unfortunately, it is difficult to describe the transition amplitudes consistently due to the aforementioned problems. We argue that one needs to describe qfts by stochastic differential equations, and in the case of gravity, by Regge calculus in order to resolve this problem.

Abstract:We presented the topological current of Ehrenfest definition of phase transition. It is shown that different topology of the configuration space corresponds to different phase transition, it is marked by the Euler number of the interaction potential. The two phases separated by the coexistence curve is assigned with different winding numbers of opposite sign. We also found an universal equation of coexistence curve, from which one can arrive the phase diagram of any order classical and quantum phase transition. The topological quantum phase transition theory is established, and is applied to the Bose-Hubbard model, the phase diagram of the first order quantum PT is in agreement with recent progress.

Abstract:Different topological phases of quantum systems has become areas of increased focus in recent decades. In particular, the question of how to realize and manipulate systems with non-trivial first Chern number is pursued both experimentally and theoretically. Here we go beyond typical spin 1/2 systems and consider both single and coupled spin 1 systems as a means of realizing higher first Chern numbers and studying the emergence of different topological phases. We show that rich topological phase diagrams can be realized by coupling two spin 1 systems using both numerical and analytical methods. Furthermore, we consider a concrete realization of spin 1 systems using a superconducting circuit. This realization includes non-standard spin-spin interaction terms that may endanger the topological properties. We argue however that the realistic circuit Hamiltonian including all terms should be expected to show the rich phase structure as well. This puts our theoretical predictions within reach of state-of-the-art experimental setups.

Abstract:Because global topological properties are robust against local perturbations, understanding and manipulating the topological properties of physical systems is essential in advancing quantum science and technology. For quantum computation, topologically protected qubit operations can increase computational robustness, and for metrology the quantized Hall effect directly defines the von Klitzing constant. Fundamentally, topological order is generated by singularities called topological defects in extended spaces, and is quantified in terms of Chern numbers, each of which measures different sorts of fields traversing surfaces enclosing these topological singularities. Here, inspired by high energy theories, we describe our synthesis and characterization of a singularity present in non-Abelian gauge theories - a Yang monopole - using atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in a five-dimensional space, and quantify the monopole in terms of Chern numbers measured on enclosing manifolds. While the well-known 1st Chern number vanished, the 2nd Chern number, measured for the first time in any physical settings, did not. By displacing the manifold, we then observed a phase transition from "topological" to "trivial" as the monopole left the manifold.

Abstract:Topology, a mathematical concept, has recently become a popular and truly transdisciplinary topic encompassing condensed matter physics, solid state chemistry, and materials science. Since there is a direct connection between real space, namely atoms, valence electrons, bonds and orbitals, and reciprocal space, namely bands and Fermi surfaces, via symmetry and topology, classifying topological materials within a single-particle picture is possible. Currently, most materials are classified as trivial insulators, semimetals and metals, or as topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl nodal-line semimetals, and topological metals. The key ingredients for topology are: certain symmetries, the inert pair effect of the outer electrons leading to inversion of the conduction and valence bands, and spin-orbit coupling. This review presents the topological concepts related to solids from the viewpoint of a solid-state chemist, summarizes techniques for growing single crystals, and describes basic physical property measurement techniques to characterize topological materials beyond their structure and provide examples of such materials. Finally, a brief outlook on the impact of topology in other areas of chemistry is provided at the end of the article.

Abstract:Since topological quantum materials may possess interesting properties and promote the application of electronic devices, the search for new topological quantum materials has become the focus and frontier of condensed matter physics. Currently, it has been found that there are two interesting systems in topological quantum materials, topological superconducting materials and topological magnetic materials. Although research on these materials has made rapid progress, a systematic review of their synthesis, properties, and applications, particularly their synthesis, is still lacking. In this paper, we emphasize the experimental preparation of two typical topological quantum materials and then briefly introduce their potential physical properties and applications. Finally, we provide insights into current and future issues in the study of topological quantum material systems.

Axion topological field theory of topological superconductors

Abstract:Topological superconductors are gapped superconductors with gapless and topologically robust quasiparticles propagating on the boundary. In this paper, we present a topological field theory description of three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors. In our theory the topological superconductor is characterized by a topological coupling between the electromagnetic field and the superconducting phase fluctuation, which has the same form as the coupling of "axions" with an Abelian gauge field. As a physical consequence of our theory, we predict the level crossing induced by the crossing of special "chiral" vortex lines, which can be realized by considering s-wave superconductors in proximity with the topological superconductor. Our theory can also be generalized to the coupling with a gravitational field.

Quantum geometrical properties of topological materials

Abstract:The momentum space of topological insulators and topological superconductors is equipped with a quantum metric defined from the overlap of neighboring valence band states or quasihole states. We investigate the quantum geometrical properties of these materials within the framework of Dirac models and differential geometry. The Ricci scalar is found to be a constant throughout the whole Brillouin zone, and the vacuum Einstein equation is satisfied in 3D with a finite cosmological constant. For linear Dirac models, several geometrical properties are found to be independent of the band gap, including the straight line geodesic, constant volume of the curved momentum space, exponential decay form of the nonlocal topological marker, and unity Euler characteristic in 2D, indicating the peculiar yet universal quantum geometrical properties of these models.
