Abstract:Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI), as a novel electro-driven desalination technology, has attracted growing exploration towards brackish water treatment, hypersaline water treatment, and selective resource recovery in recent years. As a flow-electrode-based electrochemical technology, FCDI has similarities with several other electrochemical technologies such as electrochemical flow capacitors and semisolid fuel cells, whose performance are closely coupled with the characteristics of the flow-electrodes. In this review, we sort out the potentially parallel mechanisms of electrosorption and electrodialysis in the FCDI desalination process, and make clear the importance of the flowable capacitive electrodes. We then adopt an equivalent circuit model to distinguish the resistances to ion transport and electron transport within the electrodes, and clarify the importance of electronic conductivity on the system performance based on a series of electrochemical tests. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of electrode selection and flow circulation patterns on system performance (energy consumption, salt removal rate), review the current treatment targets and system performance, and then provide an outlook on the research directions in the field to support further applications of FCDI. Abstract:Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) holds great advantage and potential compared with conventional CDI as it enables continuously water desalination. However, efficient electrode separation to prevent its runoff is a great challenge that has not been well addressed. In this study, we demonstrated an FCDI process tailored for ion electrosorption using magnetic activated carbons (MACs) synthesized by simple coprecipitation of Fe3O4 on carbon substrate. The Fe3O4 provides the magnetism necessary for magnetic separation, while the carbon substrate endows electrosorption sites for ions. When used as electrodes in desalination cycles, the MACs exhibit similar salt removal rate with bare activated carbon but extremely high charge efficiency (>100%) and energy efficiency because of enhanced interparticle aggregation increasing electric conductivity and causing charge imbalance in the electrode chambers. The MAC also exhibited excellent magnetic separation efficiency (>99.81%) with its half retention lifetime 2 orders of magnitude higher than activated carbon and high stability with a lifetime of thousands of cycles. This study provides an easy and "contactless" separation of the fluidized electrodes in the FCDI system, which is safe and friendly for FCDI operation and maintenance in practical application.

Abstract:The desalination of seawater/wastewater utilizing flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) has received significant interest. However, challenges like the low electrical conductivity of flow electrode and excessive energy consumption have prevented the scaling up of desalination operations. To overcome these issues, this study introduces a new FCDI system termed the two-stage FCDI (TS-FCDI) system, in which desalination modules are equipped with freestanding and flow electrode. The TS-FCDI system offers a graded desalination module design that produces an average salt removal rate (ASRR) of 113 μg cm 2 ·min −1 . However, the TS-FCDI system requires substantially reduced infrastructure investment, device size, and energy expenses. Notably, the design allows for the simultaneous operation of freestanding and flow electrode and enables the transport of ions and charges in the electrode region. Experimental evidence from multiple device configurations (CDI, FCDI, and TS-FCDI) supports this claim. Notably, the TS-FCDI system shows about twice the desalination performance over FCDI, with approximately 50 h of single-cycle (SC) operation. This enhancement links the freestanding electrode with the flow electrode, enabling the device to be well-suited for practical applications. The continuous flow of electrode particles in contact with the freestanding electrode initiates secondary ion transport, merging two different types of electrodes to enhance the active space of the electrode, effectively improving ion adsorption performance. In summary, the results of this study indicate the potential of the TS-FCDI system as a suitable desalination technology for scaling up applications.

Abstract:Flow electrodes capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a promising CDI variant, and has been used in various fields like brackishwater desalination and nutrients recovery. Activated carbon (AC), a prevalent FCDI electrode, suffers from low ion adsorption capacity, poor electric conductivity, and large viscosity, which restrict their large-scale applications. In this study, situ polymerization was utilized to prepare porous polyaniline and activated carbon composite (pPANI-AC) electrode with the assistance of ice template. This innovative electrode took advantages of the pseudocapacitive effects of porous polyaniline and the ion channels was increased by exposing the pores and surface of the porous activated carbon. The new composite electrode has an increase in specific surface area from 213.5 m 2 g −1 to 616.1 m 2 g −1 , and an increase in capacitance from 93 to 178 F g −1 , and the viscosity flow electrodes decreases from 127 to 21 Pas. Reduced viscosity and intrinsic impedance of the flow electrode result in an increase in flow electrode conductivity and ionic capacity of the FCDI system that has a 70 % increase in desalination capacity. This study developed a low-cost and environmentally friendly active material for high-efficient flowable electrodes, which will pave way for the real applications of FCDI technology.

Abstract:Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an innovative technology in which an intermediate chamber plays an important role in the desalination process. However, relatively few studies have been conducted on the structures of these intermediate chambers. In this study, we propose a novel flow-electrode capacitive deionization device with a spindle-shaped inlet chamber (S-FCDI). The desalination rate of the S-FCDI under optimal operating conditions was 36% higher than that of the FCDI device with a conventional rectangular chamber (R-FCDI). The spindle-shaped chamber transferred 1.2 μmol more ions than the rectangular chamber, based on energy per joule. Additionally, we performed a detailed analysis of different inlet chamber shapes using computational fluid dynamics software. We concluded that S-FCDI has a relatively low flow resistance and almost no stagnation zone. This provides unique insights into the development of intermediate chambers. This study may contribute to the improvement of the desalination performance in industrial applications of FCDI.

Abstract:Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) employs carbon-based materials for electrochemical separation. Redox additives like vanadium, ferricyanide, and organic molecules have boosted desalination rates in FCDI. However, these additives must be low-cost, have chemical stability in electrolytes, and have low toxicity. We investigate two iron-based redox couples, iron chloride, and iron citrate, for their cost-effectiveness and reduced health risks. We incorporate them with activated carbon (AC) in flow electrodes, resulting in a significant enhancement of the salt removal rate, with iron chloride increasing it by 100 % and iron citrate by 23 % compared to standard AC slurries. In our system, the AC exhibits a salt removal rate of 7.8μmolcm−2min−1 , while the iron chloride system reaches 15.6μmolcm−2min−1 . Iron citrate flow electrodes achieve a desalination rate of 9.6μmolcm−2min−1 , maintaining a pH suitable for potable water. We observe that iron chloride concentration in the flow electrode influences iron crossover and pH in the water streams, leading to acidity. Conversely, the iron citrate-based slurry maintains minimal iron crossover and a neutral pH. This study highlights iron-based redox additives as promising for FCDI slurries and the need for tailored flow electrode composition based on specific ion removal requirements.

Abstract:Flow capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an emerging desalination technology at which flow electrodes (shear-thinning flowable carbon slurries) are used to remove ions from saline water. The geometry of flow electrode channels, which provide the path and ensure the distribution and mixing of the flow electrodes, is one of the most important aspects to be optimized. This work presents experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling analysis of the influence of the geometry of flow electrode channels on FCDI performance. Flow electrode gaskets (with open, serpentine (short) horizontal and serpentine (long) vertical channels) were 3D printed using a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET-G) filament. The FCDI cell with a vertical serpentine flow electrode channel exhibited the poorest performance due to channel blockage by carbon particles, while the best results were achieved with a horizontal serpentine flow electrode channel. CFD simulations aided in understanding this behaviour by showing that the channel geometry strongly affects the local shear rate, and thus the local viscosity of flow electrodes. Thus, it is recommended to design channels that induce flow disturbance aiming for increasing the shear rate and hence reducing flow electrode viscosity, therefore promoting their flowability and reducing clogging chances.

Abstract:FeS has attracted much attention in the field of capacitive deionisation of flow electrodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity and wide range of sources. However, it usually exhibits frustrating performance due to its inherent low conductivity and volume expansion during charging and discharging. Herein, we successfully prepared calcium alginate-coated FeS carbon spheres (C@FeS) with a hollow nanosphere structure by a combination of sol-gel and solid-phase sintering using sodium alginate as a carbon source. This unique hollow structure provides enough space for the expansion of FeS and enhances the stability of the sulfide; meanwhile, the internal "surface-line-surface" structure not only facilitates the migration and charge transfer of ions inside, but also provides more active electrosorption sites. When assembled as the flow electrode of the flow electrode capacitive deionisation (FCDI) system, the desalination capacity of the electrode was improved from 25.32 mg g−1 to 53.12 mg g−1. Therefore, the C@FeS composite is expected to provide a new candidate electrode material for the FCDI system, which will make the future desalination process more cost-effective and efficient.

Abstract:Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) technology has been demonstrated to be a promising approach for ammonia removal and recovery. The flow-electrode, where adsorption and desorption occur, is one of the most significant parts in FCDI cells. However, in previous studies, the influence of concentrations in the electrolyte was not well understood, which greatly influenced system performances. In this study, we initially evaluated FCDI performance by using electrolytes containing different amounts of activated carbon (AC), as well as initial ammonium concentrations. Results indicated that compared to concentration factors (CFs), the effect of AC contents on the deionization process was almost neglectable. To achieve efficient ammonia removal and enrichment, initial CF below 10 and refreshment of flow-electrode when CF exceeded 100 were recommended. Further experiments indicated that the poor system performance under high initial CF was caused by concentration polarization and ion back diffusion. The long-term experiment confirmed the above conclusion. Besides, a high concentration of 5600 mg.L-1 was gained for ammonia recovery. This study demonstrated that the concentration in the electrolyte needs to be considered carefully to maintain the system in an efficient and economic state.

Abstract:Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a new ion removal technology with sustainable deionization performance. However, the interface resistance has a significant impact on ions migration in FCDI. We therefore introduced a novel FCDI device that incorporated a layer of carbon felt as an "ionic capacitor" between the flow electrode and the ion exchange membrane , termed CF-FCDI. Mechanism exploration results revealed that the addition of carbon felt reduced device resistance, shorten electron transfer pathways, improved charge efficiency, and increased ion migration rate. Experimental results demonstrated that the improved CF-FCDI device achieved 44 % higher desalination rate compared to traditional device. In addition, long term operation experiments confirmed the stability of CF-FCDI device, highlighting its potential as a viable desalination solution. The findings of this study provided valuable insights for further development of FCDI and offered a promising solution for its applications such as seawater desalination.

Abstract:This study systematically optimized the key operating parameters and interpreted their effecting mechanisms in a flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) system. The optimal voltage, activated carbon electrode content, electrolyte concentration, feedwater flowrate, and electrode flowrate for desalinating low salinity feedwater (1.0 g L-1 NaCl) were determined to be 1.8 V, 2.0 wt%, 10.0 g L-1, 80 mL min-1, and 60 mL min-1, respectively. The variations of the above parameters can affect the system conductivity, the thickness and stability of the electric double layers, and/or the degree of concentration polarization, thereby influencing the desalination performance. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis identified the operating voltage as the dominant parameter with the most significant influence on the FCDI system. Subsequently, a long-term operation was carried out under single-pass mode. The results showed that the lab-scale FCDI system was able to constantly maintain the desalination efficiency of 1.0 g L-1 feedwater (NaCl) at 40-60 % for multiple operating cycles. Over 99.8 % of electrode material regeneration and desalination efficiency recovery was able to be obtained during a 60-h operation, demonstrating that the FCDI system showed strong stability and long-term operation potential.

Abstract:As an emerging desalination technology, flow-electrode capacitive deionisation (FCDI) has the advantages of theoretically infinite adsorption capacity and applicability to high-concentration brine. However, during the operation of FCDI, the flow electrode in the S-shape channel is prone to sedimentation and clogging the channel. This undesirable phenomenon brings low efficiency and security issues. Therefore, a drop-shape channel was designed for FCDI to improve the flow regime of the flow electrode. The flow simulation of the drop-shape channel was performed to select the appropriate geometry to avoid the formation of the vortex and low-velocity region. The simulation results showed that the streamlined design of the drop-shape channel has insignificant velocity gradients. It significantly reduces the low-velocity region and improves the phenomenon of particle sedimentation. The desalination performance with varieties of electrode flow rate, AC content, and voltage was used to investigate the advantage between S-shape and drop-shape channels. It was found that under the conditions of low flow rate, high AC content, and high voltage, the drop-shape channel FCDI system could still obtain better ASRR and CE.

Abstract:Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is a newly developed water treatment technology that offers better performance than the original, solid electrode capacitive deionization (CDI). By eliminating the need for discharging process, FCDI provides much higher desalination capacity with a continuous desalination operation. Along with applications for salt removal, selective removal and recovery of specific ions are also prominent features of FCDI technology. Characteristics of electrodes and ion exchange membranes play a crucial role in controlling the selectivity of ions in an FCDI system. In this study, we demonstrated selective and continuous ion recovery by combining redox-active Prussian blue as flow electrodes and functionalized ion exchange membranes in FCDI configuration. Prussian blue selectively absorbs monovalent Na + ions from Na + /Ca 2+ mixtures through intercalation reaction, in which a smaller Stokes radius of Na + ion is more favored to fit in the crystal lattice. Furthermore, such selectivity is much more enhanced through functionalization of a cation-exchange membrane (CEM) with polymer multilayers. A layer-by-layer method was used to deposit poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) on the CEM. Results showed that polymer multilayers changed the CEM from divalent to monovalent ion-affinity due to different ion sizes and charge density. The combination of Prussian blue and functionalized CEM raised the selectivity for sodium around 17 times compared to a control system (0.2 to 3.35). We believe that our approach can provide insight into various areas including resource production, recovery, removal of toxic ions, and material recycling using an FCDI system.

Abstract:Flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) is an emerging desalination technology for its high desalination efficiency and continuous operation. This study systematically investigated the feasibility of various representative carbon-based materials and their combinations as the flow-electrode with the primary focus on their desalination efficiency and energy efficiency in FCDI. Among individual carbon-based electrode materials, namely activated carbon (AC), carbon fiber (CF), carbon black (CB), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), the nano-scale materials obviously outperformed micron-scale materials. Whereas, the combinations of AC + MWCNTs/GNPs provided superior desalination performance than AC + CB while working as blended flow-electrodes in FCDIs due to the different spatial configurations of three nano-scale particles. Furthermore, CB was tested as the base material in combination with MWCNTs and GNPs respectively. Approximately 110–130% increments in maximum salt adsorption rate were obtained for both blended electrodes compared to individual CB electrodes. The highest SAR max of 1.59 ± 0.02 μg cm −2 s −1 was observed in FCDI driven by the CB + GNPs electrode at a content of 1.5/0.5 wt%. Supported by the results of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the 2D spatial morphologies of GNPs were able to build similar but more stable "bridges" between base electrode particles (i.e., AC or CB) as CNTs. Its sheet-like structure avoided agglomeration problems and largely promoted the conductivity of the product flow-electrodes.

Abstract:Flow-electrode Capacitive Deionization (FCDI) is a relatively young technology that allows energy-efficient desalination and salt concentration. FCDI employs flow electrodes, suspensions of conductive particles capable of storing ions in the electric double layer at their surface upon charging. To facilitate charging, the flow electrode particles must be electrically contacted using current collectors. Current collectors must guide the flow electrode along a membrane surface, provide a surface area for electrical contact with the particles, and be inert at high salt concentrations. In this study, we compare different current collector architectures for FCDI. Graphite plates and membrane-electrode assemblies made of carbon fiber fabric are two architectures described in the recent literature. We introduce a new current collector architecture based on a bipolar plate made of expanded graphite. These novel current collectors show up to 55 % higher salt transfer than graphite plates, rendering them a valuable new architecture for FCDI modules. Comparative analysis of different current collector architectures shows that the side walls of a flow channel are more effective at charge transport than the bottom wall. Furthermore, surface roughness impacts charge transport, with smoother surfaces leading to higher salt removal rates.

Abstract:Flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI), a novel ion removal technology, is influenced by various factors such as electrode material properties, fluid flow rate, and device structure. In the FCDI system, the intermediate chamber is the core element where ions migrate towards the cathode and anode to complete the adsorption process. In this study, we designed a hollow plastic plate with channels (PP) and a hollow graphite plate with channels (GP) as the intermediate chamber, compare and study with conventional plastic mesh (PM) chambers. CFD simulations revealed that the newly designed PP and GP chambers significantly reduced the hydraulic stagnation zone. The results of the desalination experiments revealed that the desalination efficiency of the GP-FCDI was 1.5 and 1.9 times higher than that of the PP-FCDI and PM-FCDI, respectively. At the same time, in situ potential measurement (ISPM) was used to monitor the voltage drop of each component in FCDI, thereby accurately calculated the proportion of energy consumption in the intermediate chamber. The results indicate that the energy consumption of the intermediate chamber of GP-FCDI was 54 % less than that of PM-FCDI. The current work will help us provide new insights for the design and optimization of FCDI systems.

Performance of flow-through mode capacitive deionization device with activated carbon felt electrode

Abstract:Activated carbon felt (ACF) was selected as electro-adsorption material to fabricate a flow-through mode capacitive deionization (CDI) device for brine wastewater desalination.Electro-adsorption capacity (EAC) of ACF was investigated under different applied voltages,influx,salinity intensities and different type of salt ions.The EAC of ACF in flow-through CDI was also compared with that in a flow-by mode CDI device.The results indicate that EAC of ACF increases with the increasing applied voltage and salinity intensity,until reaching to the maximum EAC.However,it increases first and then decreases with the increasing influx.A maximum EAC of 7.73 mg· g-1 has been obtained in a flow-through CDI,with the condition of 1.2 V applied voltage,0.053 mL· min-1· cm-2 influx and 1000 mg· L-1 influent salinity,while only 5.42 mg· g-1 of maximum EAC can be obtained in a flow-by CDI.The EACs of ACF to different type of salt ions are in the order of K+ ＞Na+ ＞Ca2+ for cation and Cl-＞NO3-＞SO24-for anion.ACF-based flow-through CDI exhibits good stability and does not appear obvious decay in 12 cycles of adsorption-desorption.
Enhanced Salt Removal Performance Using Graphene-Modified Sodium Vanadium Fluorophosphate in Flow Electrode Capacitive Deionization

Abstract:Designing electrode materials with excellent comprehensive properties was of top priority in promoting development of flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI). To date, most FCDI studies involved the application and modification of carbon-based materials, which suffered the contradiction between rheological behavior and electrochemical performance. In this study, a Na+ superionic conductor (NASICON) sodium vanadium fluorophosphate@reduced graphene oxide (NVOPF@rGO) was synthesized and applied as a flow electrode in FCDI. Benefiting from the confinement effect of the three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) network, thin and uniform NVOPF nanosheets formed and provided abundant active sites for adsorbing Na+. Moreover, the interconnected rGO network formed a 3D conductive network for Na+ and electron transport. Compared with an activated carbon (AC)-AC system (AC was used as an anode and a cathode), a NVOPF@rGO-AC system (NVOPF@rGO was used as a cathode and AC was used as an anode) exhibited preferable dispersibility and stability of electrode dispersion, lower internal resistance, higher desalination rate, and lower energy consumption. Besides, the average salt adsorption rate (ASAR) reached 5.32 μg·cm-2·min-1 by adjusting the concentration of the electrode (4.73 wt %), the flow rate of the electrode (25 mL·min-1), and the operation voltage (1.6 V). This study demonstrated the potential of faradic flow electrodes for promoting the development and application of FCDI.
