Abstract:The source mechanism of induced seismicity by hydraulic fracture stimulation is crucial for characterizing the fracture type and local stress state. In this study, we adopted a full-waveform matching technique to determine the source mechanisms for induced seismicity. In addition to fit the waveforms of real data, this technique also matches the P-wave first-motion polarities and S/P amplitude ratios. Based on this technique, we developed a new source inversion method using the neighbourhood algorithm. The advantages of the new method are that it can better constrain the solutions and address the issue of existing approach in determining the optimal weights. Through synthetic data tests, we demonstrated the new method can yield reliable source mechanism solutions. We then applied this method to the monitoring data of induced seismicity in a shale gas field. The results show the induced events have mostly strike-slip mechanisms, implying that the maximum horizontal stress in the monitored area is larger than the vertical stress.
