Abstract:Organic quinone compounds are promising electrode materials for aqueous rocking-chair batteries due to chemical inert toward aqueous solutions and wide feasibility of various charge carriers. However, in aqueous electrolytes, the ion-pairing effect of different charge carriers on the electrochemical properties of organic quinone compounds remains unclear. Herein, we selecte a small molecule 9,10-anthraquinone as a study model and propose that the proton assisted metathesis reaction between anthrahydroquinone and Mn+ results in stabilizing electrode reaction. Meantime, the possibility of anthraquinone as anode for aqueous multivalent metalion (Al3+, Mg2+, Zn2+) batteries is illustrated. Typically for aluminum-ion battery, a reversible capacity of 211.4 mA h g(-1) at 800 mA g(-1) after 500 full cycles with a capacity retention of 94.5% can be obtained. This work may provide guidance to design and explore more organic quinone compounds for aqueous batteries.

Abstract:As an alternative to conventional inorganic intercalation electrode materials, organic electrode materials are promising candidates for the next generation of sustainable and versatile energy storage devices. In this paper we provide an overview of organic electrode materials, including their fundamental knowledge, development history and perspective applications. Based on different organics including n-type, p-type and bipolar, we firstly analyzed their working principles, reaction mechanisms, electrochemical performances, advantages and challenges. To understand the development history and trends in organic electrode materials, we elaborate in detail various organics with different structures, including conducting polymers, organodisulfides, thioethers, nitroxyl radical polymers and conjugated carbonyl compounds. The high electrochemical performance, in addition with the unique features of organics such as flexibility, processability and structure diversity, provide them great perspective in various energy storage devices, including rechargeable Li/Na batteries, supercapacitors, thin film batteries, aqueous rechargeable batteries, redox flow batteries and even all-organic batteries. It is expected that organic electrode materials will show their talents in the "post Li-ion battery" era, towards cheap, green, sustainable and versatile energy storage devices.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries using inorganic compounds as electrode materials are considered a promising solution for grid-scale energy storage, while wide application is limited by the short life and/or high cost of electrodes. Organics with carbonyl groups are being investigated as the alternative to inorganic electrode materials because they offer the advantages of tunable structures, renewability, and they are environmentally benign. Furthermore, the wide internal space of such organic materials enables flexible storage of various charged ions (for example, H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, and so on). We offer a comprehensive overview of the progress of organics containing carbonyls for energy storage and conversion in aqueous electrolytes, including applications in aqueous batteries as solid-state electrodes, in flow batteries as soluble redox species, and in water electrolysis as redox buffer electrodes. The advantages of organic electrodes are summarized, with a discussion of the challenges remaining for their practical application.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials bring about new possibilities for the next generation green and sustainable lithium/sodium ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs) owing to their low cost, environmental benignity, renewability, flexibility, redox stability and structural diversity. However, electroactive organic compounds face many challenges in practical applications for LIBs/SIBs, such as high solubility in organic electrolytes, poor electronic conductivity, and low discharge potential as postive materials. Quinone organic materials are the most promising candidates as electrodes in LIBs/SIBs because of their high theoretical capacity, good reaction reversibility and high resource availability. While quinone electrode materials (QEMs) have so far received less attention in comparison with other organic electrode materials in secondary batteries. In this paper, an overview of the recent developments in the field of QEMs for LIBs/SIBs is provided, emphasizing on the modifications of the quinone compounds in solubility, electronic conductivity, and discharge plateaus. Finally, multifaceted modification approaches are analyzed, which can stimulate the practical applications of QEMs for LIBs/SIBs.Quinone electrode materials play an important role in rechargeable lithium/sodium ion batteries in replacing of inorganic materials owing to their low cost, renewability, environmentally benignity. However, quinone electrodes face big challenges of the dissolution of quinones in organic electrolytes, poor electronic conductivity and low discharge plateau. A comprehensive overview of various strategies for improvements of these problems is provided.

Abstract:In an effort to search for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems, organic material-based aqueous batteries have attracted numerous attentions. In particular, aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries, including either anion or cation storage, have been recently investigated with the employment of different redox-active organic materials. In this review, the recent progress in aqueous monovalent-ion batteries with organic materials are summarized. The different configurations of aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries are also introduced with the explanation of different working mechanisms. A comprehensive overview of the reported redox-active organic materials, mainly conductive or conjugated polymers, nitroxide radicals, and carbonyl compounds are presented. Moreover, the remaining challenges and recommendations with respect to aqueous monovalent-ion batteries are also discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:Aqueous organic flow batteries (AOFBs) are promising energy storage solutions to counteract the intermittent and fluctuating nature of renewable energy. However, we have limited options of electrolyte chemistry and we discarded many organic compounds because of their sluggish electrochemical kinetics, which would compromise the power capability of an AOFB. Here, exemplified by 2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (DMBQ), we present two approaches including engineering the molecular structure and utilizing an inexpensive catalyst to enhance the electrochemical kinetics of benzoquinones with the ultimate purpose of diminishing the electron transfer barrier thereby increasing the power capability of the AOFB. We show that, by exploiting these strategies, the electron transfer resistance could be reduced by 48.1%, or 55.8%, respectively, thereby leading to a 49.4% or 60.7% increase in the peak power density of a flowing cell. We believe our strategy could be extended to the full family of quinones and that it benefits further exploration of quinone-based high performance AOFBs.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as the most promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to their inherent safety, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. Simultaneously, the utilization of organic electrode materials with renewable resources, environmental compatibility, and diverse structures has sparked a surge in research and development of aqueous Zn-organic batteries (ZOBs). A comprehensive review is warranted to systematically present recent advancements in design principles, synthesis techniques, energy storage mechanisms, and zinc-ion storage performance of organic cathodes. In this review article, we comprehensively summarize the energy storage mechanisms employed by aqueous ZOBs. Subsequently, we categorize organic cathode materials into small-molecule compounds and high-molecular polymers respectively. Novel polymer materials such as conjugated polymers (CPs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highlighted with an overview of molecular design strategies and structural optimization based on organic cathode materials aimed at enhancing the performance of aqueous ZOBs. Finally, we discuss the challenges faced by aqueous ZOBs along with future prospects to offer insights into their practical applications.

Abstract:<p>Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) fabricated via inorganic vertices and organic ligands have drawn increasing interest from research communities by reason of their diversity in construction and composition. Lately, MOFs have been demonstrated remarkable candidates in electrochemical energy storage fields and plenty of MOFs employed in electrochemical fields display fascinating performances. Herein, the synthesis strategies and applications of pristine MOFs and their composites in lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries and supercapacitors are introduced. What's more, we also briefly introduce the general mechanism of lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries and supercapacitors, and discuss the electrochemical mechanism in detail for specific materials. It is expected that this review will contribute to the forward advancement of pristine MOFs and their composites with outstanding electrochemical behaviors.</p>

Abstract:The quest for next-generation sustainable (resource-wise, safe and eco-friendly), high performance (light-weight and energy/power dense) and cost-efficient rechargeable energy storage devices has been catalyzing the research on new battery chemistries. In this research rush, organic electrode materials have ticked many of the wish-list boxes, but there are also a few obstacles to overcome, the two major ones being their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and instantaneous dissolution into liquid electrolytes. In this critical review, we first provide the readers with a brief account of the various organic material families considered for electrode materials, with their particular benefits and problems. Then, using some basic concepts borrowed from the field of organic electronics we aim to gain a deeper insight into the conductivity of organics in electrochemical systems – an issue little discussed so far. To address the solubility issue we discuss – with some illustrative examples – the benefits and challenges possibly emerging by combining the organic electrodes with a solid electrolyte instead of the conventional liquid electrolyte. As one of the highlights we discuss thin-film microbatteries fabricated using the atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique, where ultrathin layers of the LiPON electrolyte are combined with lithium quinone and terephthalate electrodes. Such a thin-film configuration is intriguing in the sense that it does not contain any additives, thus serving as an ideal model system for fundamental studies.

Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum-ion (Al-ion) batteries have been highlighted as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant aluminum reserves, low cost, high intrinsic safety, and high theoretical energy density. However, the strong Coulombic interaction between the high charge density Al3+ and electrode host lattices leads to poor kinetics and insufficient cycle life in Al-ion batteries with inorganic electrodes. In contrast, organic electrode materials exhibit the advantages of designable molecular structure, flexible framework, coordinated energy storage chemistry, and resource sustainability. Nevertheless, organic materials encounter inherently high solubility, low active center utilization, and low electrical conductivity. Herein, the recent advances in developing organic positive electrode materials for Al-ion batteries is reviewed, and the charge storage mechanisms and electrochemical performances of different types of organic materials are systematically summarized. This review also discusses design strategies to improve specific capacity, operating voltage, cycle life, and rate capability of organic positive electrodes for Al-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and research outlook toward high performance Al/organic batteries are presented.

Abstract:Multivalent ion batteries have emerged as promising solutions to meet the future demands of energy storage applications, offering not only high energy density but also diverse socio-economic advantages. Among the various options for cathodes, quinone-based organic compounds have gained attention as suitable active materials for multivalent ion batteries due to their well-aligned ion channels, flexible structures, and competitive electrochemical performance. However, the charge carriers associated with anions that are often exploited in multivalent ion battery systems operate by way of a "non-rocking-chair" mechanism, which requires the use of an excess amount of electrolyte and results in a significant decrease in the energy density. In this review, by categorizing the various charge carriers exploited in previous studies on multivalent ion batteries, we summarize recently reported quinone-based organic cathodes for multivalent ion batteries and emphasize the importance of accurately identifying the charge carriers for calculating the energy density. We also propose potential future directions toward the practical realization of multivalent ion batteries, in link with their efficient energy storage applications.

Abstract:Energy shortage hinders the rapid development of today's society, and the emergence of electronic travel equipment alleviates this phenomenon to a certain extent. The batteries are the energy storage part of electric equipment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fresh sort of porous crystal materials with controllable structure, large specific surface area, and adjustable pore size. MOFs are good electrode materials, which are used to make a variety of friendly environment, long cycling life and superior energy density of new batteries. Furthermore, MOFs are also used in separators and electrolytes, which have a lot of application space in batteries. In this review, the up-to-date research advance of MOF materials in various kinds of batteries (lithium-ion batteries, lithium oxygen batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, zinc-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries, etc.) is reviewed. Moreover, concisely introduced several conventional synthesis approaches of MOFs. Finally, Perspectives and directions on the future improvement of MOF in energy storage devices are proposed for meeting the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:With many apparent advantages including high surface area, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and diverse periodic organic-inorganic ingredients, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as versatile precursors or sacrificial templates for preparing functional materials as advanced electrodes or high-efficiency catalysts for electrochemical energy storage and conversion (EESC). In this Mini Review, we first briefly summarize the material design strategies to show the rich possibilities of the chemical compositions and physical structures of MOFs derivatives. We next highlight the latest advances focusing on the composition/structure/performance relationship and discuss their practical applications in various EESC systems, such as supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and carbon dioxide/nitrogen reduction reactions. Finally, we provide some of our own insights into the major challenges and prospective solutions of MOF-derived functional materials for EESC, hoping to shed some light on the future development of this highly exciting field.

Abstract:In this review, the recent progress on aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with organic electrode materials is summarized. The interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials is emphasized and the design strategies toward achieving high electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials are overviewed. The future research orientation in this field is also discussed. Aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries have attracted much attention in recent years owing to their fast kinetics, long cycle life, and low manufacture cost. Organic compounds with flexible structural designability are promising electrode materials for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries. In this review, the recent progress of organic electrode materials is systematically summarized for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with the focus on the interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials. Both the cations (proton, ammonium ion, and methyl viologen ions) and anions (chloridion, sulfate ion, perchlorate ion, trifluoromethanesulfonate and trifluoromethanesulfonimide ion) storage are discussed. Moreover, the design strategies toward improving the comprehensive performance of organic electrode materials in aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries will be summarized. More organic electrode materials with new reaction mechanisms need to be explored to meet the diverse demands of aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with different charge carriers in the future.
