Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials take advantages of potentially sustainable production and structural tunability compared with present commercial inorganic electrode materials. However, their applications in traditional rechargeable batteries with nonaqueous electrolytes suffer from the premature failure and safety concerns. In comparison, aqueous rechargeable batteries based on organic electrode materials have received extensive attentions in recent years for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems due to their inherent safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary on the recent progress in advanced organic electrode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries. We start from the overview of working principles and general design strategies of organic electrode materials in aqueous rechargeable batteries. Then the research advances of organic electrode materials in various aqueous rechargeable batteries are highlighted in terms of charge carriers (monovalent ions, multivalent ions, and anions). We emphasized the characteristics of organic electrode materials in various charge carriers. Finally, the critical challenges and future efforts of aqueous organic rechargeable batteries are discussed. More organic electrode materials with better electronic conductivity and fast reaction kinetics are still needed to build advanced aqueous batteries for commercial applications.

Abstract:In this review, the recent progress on aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with organic electrode materials is summarized. The interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials is emphasized and the design strategies toward achieving high electrochemical performance of organic electrode materials are overviewed. The future research orientation in this field is also discussed. Aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries have attracted much attention in recent years owing to their fast kinetics, long cycle life, and low manufacture cost. Organic compounds with flexible structural designability are promising electrode materials for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries. In this review, the recent progress of organic electrode materials is systematically summarized for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with the focus on the interaction between non‐metallic ion charge carriers and organic electrode host materials. Both the cations (proton, ammonium ion, and methyl viologen ions) and anions (chloridion, sulfate ion, perchlorate ion, trifluoromethanesulfonate and trifluoromethanesulfonimide ion) storage are discussed. Moreover, the design strategies toward improving the comprehensive performance of organic electrode materials in aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries will be summarized. More organic electrode materials with new reaction mechanisms need to be explored to meet the diverse demands of aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries with different charge carriers in the future. This review provides insights into developing high‐performance organic electrodes for aqueous non‐metallic ion batteries.

Abstract:In an effort to search for low-cost and sustainable energy storage systems, organic material-based aqueous batteries have attracted numerous attentions. In particular, aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries, including either anion or cation storage, have been recently investigated with the employment of different redox-active organic materials. In this review, the recent progress in aqueous monovalent-ion batteries with organic materials are summarized. The different configurations of aqueous monovalent-ion organic batteries are also introduced with the explanation of different working mechanisms. A comprehensive overview of the reported redox-active organic materials, mainly conductive or conjugated polymers, nitroxide radicals, and carbonyl compounds are presented. Moreover, the remaining challenges and recommendations with respect to aqueous monovalent-ion batteries are also discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract:Electroactive organics have attracted significant attention as electrode materials for next-generation rechargeable batteries because of their structural diversity, molecular adjustability, abundance, flexibility, environmental friendliness and low cost. To date, a large number of organic materials have been applied in a variety of energy storage devices. However, the inherent problems of organic materials, such as their dissolution in electrolytes and low electronic conductivity, have restricted the development of organic electrodes. In order to solve these problems, many groups have carried out research and remarkable progress has been made. Nevertheless, most reviews of organic electrodes have focused on the positive electrode rather than the negative electrode. This review first provides an overview of the recent work on organic anodes for Li- and Na-ion batteries. Six categories of organic anodes are summarized and discussed. Many of the key factors that influence the electrochemical performance of organic anodes are highlighted and their prospects and remaining challenges are evaluated.

Abstract:Organic compounds offer new possibilities for high energy/power density, cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, and functional rechargeable lithium batteries. For a long time, they have not constituted an important class of electrode materials, partly because of the large success and rapid development of inorganic intercalation compounds. In recent years, however, exciting progress has been made, bringing organic electrodes to the attention of the energy storage community. Herein thirty years' research efforts in the field of organic compounds for rechargeable lithium batteries are summarized. The working principles, development history, and design strategies of these materials, including organosulfur compounds, organic free radical compounds, organic carbonyl compounds, conducting polymers, non‐conjugated redox polymers, and layered organic compounds are presented. The cell performances of these materials are compared, providing a comprehensive overview of the area, and straightforwardly revealing the advantages/disadvantages of each class of materials. Lithium storage with organics has been overlooked in the development of rechargeable lithium batteries. Organic electrode materials offer new possibilities that are not readily available for conventional intercalation compounds. Herein three decades' research efforts on organic electrodes are reviewed, providing a comprehensive overview and analysis of the field.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries using inorganic compounds as electrode materials are considered a promising solution for grid-scale energy storage, while wide application is limited by the short life and/or high cost of electrodes. Organics with carbonyl groups are being investigated as the alternative to inorganic electrode materials because they offer the advantages of tunable structures, renewability, and they are environmentally benign. Furthermore, the wide internal space of such organic materials enables flexible storage of various charged ions (for example, H+, Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+, and so on). We offer a comprehensive overview of the progress of organics containing carbonyls for energy storage and conversion in aqueous electrolytes, including applications in aqueous batteries as solid-state electrodes, in flow batteries as soluble redox species, and in water electrolysis as redox buffer electrodes. The advantages of organic electrodes are summarized, with a discussion of the challenges remaining for their practical application.

Abstract:Rechargeable aluminum-ion (Al-ion) batteries have been highlighted as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant aluminum reserves, low cost, high intrinsic safety, and high theoretical energy density. However, the strong Coulombic interaction between the high charge density Al3+ and electrode host lattices leads to poor kinetics and insufficient cycle life in Al-ion batteries with inorganic electrodes. In contrast, organic electrode materials exhibit the advantages of designable molecular structure, flexible framework, coordinated energy storage chemistry, and resource sustainability. Nevertheless, organic materials encounter inherently high solubility, low active center utilization, and low electrical conductivity. Herein, the recent advances in developing organic positive electrode materials for Al-ion batteries is reviewed, and the charge storage mechanisms and electrochemical performances of different types of organic materials are systematically summarized. This review also discusses design strategies to improve specific capacity, operating voltage, cycle life, and rate capability of organic positive electrodes for Al-ion batteries. Finally, the challenges and research outlook toward high performance Al/organic batteries are presented.

Abstract:The quest for next-generation sustainable (resource-wise, safe and eco-friendly), high performance (light-weight and energy/power dense) and cost-efficient rechargeable energy storage devices has been catalyzing the research on new battery chemistries. In this research rush, organic electrode materials have ticked many of the wish-list boxes, but there are also a few obstacles to overcome, the two major ones being their intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and instantaneous dissolution into liquid electrolytes. In this critical review, we first provide the readers with a brief account of the various organic material families considered for electrode materials, with their particular benefits and problems. Then, using some basic concepts borrowed from the field of organic electronics we aim to gain a deeper insight into the conductivity of organics in electrochemical systems – an issue little discussed so far. To address the solubility issue we discuss – with some illustrative examples – the benefits and challenges possibly emerging by combining the organic electrodes with a solid electrolyte instead of the conventional liquid electrolyte. As one of the highlights we discuss thin-film microbatteries fabricated using the atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique, where ultrathin layers of the LiPON electrolyte are combined with lithium quinone and terephthalate electrodes. Such a thin-film configuration is intriguing in the sense that it does not contain any additives, thus serving as an ideal model system for fundamental studies.

Abstract:Organic electrode active materials are widely used in the research of electrochemical energy storage devices due to their advantages of low cost, friendly environment, strong sustainability, flexible design and high electrical activity. Although organic active materials (OAMs) are widely studied in organic and aqueous batteries, there are still some challenges to overcome before large-scale commercialization. In this paper, the reaction mechanism of OAM was reviewed, and the application of OAMs including small molecule, polymer and coordination compound in organic battery and aqueous battery and the strategy of improving electrochemical performance were introduced. Finally, the key problems and future research directions of the application of OAMs in batteries were put forward.

Abstract:As an alternative to conventional inorganic intercalation electrode materials, organic electrode materials are promising candidates for the next generation of sustainable and versatile energy storage devices. In this paper we provide an overview of organic electrode materials, including their fundamental knowledge, development history and perspective applications. Based on different organics including n-type, p-type and bipolar, we firstly analyzed their working principles, reaction mechanisms, electrochemical performances, advantages and challenges. To understand the development history and trends in organic electrode materials, we elaborate in detail various organics with different structures, including conducting polymers, organodisulfides, thioethers, nitroxyl radical polymers and conjugated carbonyl compounds. The high electrochemical performance, in addition with the unique features of organics such as flexibility, processability and structure diversity, provide them great perspective in various energy storage devices, including rechargeable Li/Na batteries, supercapacitors, thin film batteries, aqueous rechargeable batteries, redox flow batteries and even all-organic batteries. It is expected that organic electrode materials will show their talents in the "post Li-ion battery" era, towards cheap, green, sustainable and versatile energy storage devices.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have emerged as the most promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to their inherent safety, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. Simultaneously, the utilization of organic electrode materials with renewable resources, environmental compatibility, and diverse structures has sparked a surge in research and development of aqueous Zn-organic batteries (ZOBs). A comprehensive review is warranted to systematically present recent advancements in design principles, synthesis techniques, energy storage mechanisms, and zinc-ion storage performance of organic cathodes. In this review article, we comprehensively summarize the energy storage mechanisms employed by aqueous ZOBs. Subsequently, we categorize organic cathode materials into small-molecule compounds and high-molecular polymers respectively. Novel polymer materials such as conjugated polymers (CPs), conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highlighted with an overview of molecular design strategies and structural optimization based on organic cathode materials aimed at enhancing the performance of aqueous ZOBs. Finally, we discuss the challenges faced by aqueous ZOBs along with future prospects to offer insights into their practical applications.

Abstract:Aqueous ion batteries are receiving increasing attention as a means of achieving carbon neutrality due to their advantages in terms of low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. Unlike aqueous multivalent metal cation batteries, monovalent metal cations in aqueous ion batteries have been favored by researchers for their lower reduction potentials, smaller hydration ion radii and hydration enthalpies, and faster ion migration rates. However, the research on aqueous monovalent cation batteries is still in the experimental exploration stage due to several limitations. The lower operating voltage and energy densities of aqueous monovalent cation batteries are mainly due to the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of the electrolyte, limited compatible electrode materials, and unresolved challenges such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This paper aims to address the issues related to aqueous monovalent lithium/sodium ion batteries. A specific discussion will be provided on the electrode materials, the dissolution structure of the electrolyte, and the design strategy of the battery. Additionally, this paper will also present insights into the challenges faced during the research process and the prospects for the development of aqueous lithium/sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-organic batteries (ZOBs) are an emerging class of new batteries that combine the advantages of aqueous zinc-ion batteries and organic cathode materials, thus maximizing the realization of renewable resources and environmental friendliness. In particular, the tunability of molecular structure and the diversity of organic reactions make organic materials have infinite potential in the field of energy storage, including aqueous ZOBs. Herein, we briefly present the development history, working principles and cell configurations of aqueous ZOBs and mainly address the considerable advances in controllable synthesis and rational design of organic cathode materials for aqueous ZOBs, covering small molecule compounds and polymers based on doping reaction and bond reaction. Especially, the merging framework structures and storage mechanisms are timely highlighted. In addition, the current challenges and future perspectives are finally discussed. We believe this review will afford guidelines and provide some inspirations for the development of advanced and efficient aqueous ZOBs.

Abstract:Benefiting from high specific capacity, molecular structural diversity, low cost and renewability, widely concerned small organic carbonyl electrode materials have been developed rapidly in recent years and are expected to be applied in next-generation large-scale energy storage fields and flexible devices. Nevertheless, the inherent insulation and high solubility in organic electrolytes and other fundamental issues restrict their electrochemical performance and result in unexpected capacity decay, preventing them from commercial application in rechargeable batteries. This perspective predominantly summarizes the recently modified methodologies that have been proposed to date for organic carbonyl-contained small molecules as electrode materials. The specific modification approaches for tackling the problems mainly include molecular design, salt formation, preparation of nanoelectrode materials, surface coating, compounding with various electronically conductive materials, and employing all-solid or quasi-solid batteries. The above pivotal issues can be effectively solved with these modification strategies, and superior electrochemical performance could be dramatically realized. By reviewing the advantages and limitations of these modified strategies, the future developing directions of organic carbonyl-contained small molecules in rechargeable batteries are also prospected.

Abstract:Given the low cost, ease of fabrication, high safety, and environmental‐friendly characteristics, aqueous rechargeable batteries using mild aqueous solutions as electrolytes (pH is close to 7) and a monovalent/multivalent metal ion as charge carrier, are attracting extensive attention for energy storage. However, accompanied by advantages of mild aqueous electrolyte mentioned above, there are some challenges that stand in the way of the development of these aqueous rechargeable batteries, such as the narrow stable electrochemical window of water, instability of electrode materials, undesired side reactions, etc. In recent years, a massive effort is devoted to overcoming the drawbacks, and some encouraging works have arisen. In this review, the latest advances of electrolyte and electrode materials in aqueous batteries based on monovalent ion (Li + , Na + , K + ) and multivalent ion (Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Al 3+ ) are briefly reviewed.

Abstract:In search for novel cathode materials for lithium, sodium, and potassium ion batteries, organic electrode materials are expected to be the next powerful candidates owing to their high theoretical capacity, facile synthesis, low cost, and structural diversity. However, reports concerning organic compounds are not common compared to those concerning inorganic compounds in both research and commercial applications. New requirements for rechargeable batteries, such as low production cost and natural abundance, also preclude us from focusing on heavy and toxic metals, which still impose cost and resource constraints. Undoubtedly, organic carbonyl compounds featuring multielectron reactions and reaction reversibility are quite suitable for meeting these needs. In this review, an overview of the recent efforts on carbonyl materials containing small molecules and polymers is provided. In addition, some strategies to resolve the main problems, such as the dissolution of active organic chemicals into organic electrolytes, low discharge voltage, and low electronic conductivity, are discussed.
