Abstract:Nature has served as a dominant source of inspiration in the area of chemistry, serving as prototypes for the design of materials with proficient performance. In this account, we present our effort to explore porous organic polymers (POPs) as a platform for the construction of biomimetic catalysts to enable new technologies to achieve efficient conversions. For each aspect, we firstly describe the chemical basis of nature, followed by presenting the principles and design strategies involved for functionalizing POPs along with a summary of critical requirements for materials, culminating in a demonstration of unique features of POPs. Our endeavors of using POPs to address the fundamental scientific problems related to biomimetic catalysis are then presented to show their enormous potential and capabilities for a wide range of catalytic transformations. To conclude, a personal perspective on the challenges and opportunities in this emerging field are presented.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: Porous organic polymers (POPs) have revolu-tionized the production of advanced catalytic materials with unique features such as a large surface area, tunable pore structure, ease of functionalization with a wide range of functional groups, and the ability to function as hosts for encapsulation of functional species, making them appealing for task-specific applications. Although numerous POP-based catalysts have been developed, they are rarely used as a common tool for preparatory-scale operations in laboratories. The high costs of these materials, because of the expensive reagents and catalysts often used in coupling reactions during their synthesis, primarily hinder their adoption. Since its discovery, free-radical polymerization of vinyl monomers to yield polymers has continuously attracted scientific and industrial attention and has been extensively adopted as an effective reaction for polymer production. Our group has targeted the synthesis of porous polymers via free-radical solvothermal polymerization of vinylated functionalities owing to the high efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and general applicability. More significantly, because of the flexibility of alkyl chains derived from the polymerized vinyl groups, the resulting frameworks are highly flexible, which is beneficial to facilitating the cooperation of catalytic components therein. Given the high catalytic efficiency of enzymes and amenable synthesis of POPs using vinylated functionalities, we have designed efficient heterogeneous catalysts by targeting the following aspects of enzyme mimicry: control over the second sphere of active sites, design of flexible ligand pockets, and construction of hydrophobic reaction microenvironments in POPs. In terms of control over the second sphere of active sites, we proposed the introduction of auxiliary groups or solvation environments via customized synthesis of POPs to perturb reaction pathways, reduce activation energies, and consequently improve catalytic performance. In terms of the design of flexible ligand pockets, we proposed the design concept of "porous ligand sponges " to fabricate quasi-homogeneous organometallic catalysts. The spatial continuity of the ligands on the flexible polymer chains enables their cooperation during catalysis, addressing the long-term challenges posed by the degradation of the catalytic performance after their heterogeneity, thus providing a possible replacement for homogeneous organometallic catalysts. In terms of adjusting the reaction microenvironments, we proposed the creation of hydrophobic environments to concentrate hydrophobic reagents in the vicinity of active sites and repel hydrophilic products to facilitate catalytic transformation. This Account highlights our ongoing research on the construction of POP-based catalysts. We also discuss the design strategies and principles involved with the aim of underscoring the unique features of POPs fabricated via solvothermal free-radical polymerization of vinylated functionalities in designing catalytic materials. This article summarizes our more than a decade of innovation in this field and is anticipated to advance the development of genuinely competitive artificial enzymes.

Abstract:The emergence of porous organic polymers (POPs) has provided great opportunities for new applications in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their unprecedented intrinsic structural features such as high surface areas, extraordinary framework stabilities and chemically adjustable compositions. In this tutorial review, representative recent developments in the POPs-based catalysts with hierarchically porous structures are presented. Various strategies for the syntheses of hierarchically porous polymers including hard-templating, soft-templating and template-free approaches and the design of catalytically active porous polymers including post-modification, co-polymerization and self-polymerization have been discussed. In addition, their catalytic properties are compared. Finally, we emphasize the importance of the synthesis of hierarchically porous polymer based heterogeneous catalysts using sustainable routes under template-free and metal-free conditions.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) are porous materials composed of light elements such as C, H, N, and O. The benign characters, including large surface area, good physical and chemical stability, well-defined chemical composition, wide ranges of monomer selection, and strong designability, have made POPs one of the frontiers in materials research. In this review, we discussed the design and synthesis of various POP materials that mainly led by Chinese scientists, including conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), and hypercrosslinked porous polymers (HCPs), as well as crystalline POPs comprised of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and a special class of COFs with triazine rings, covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), and supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs), and sorted out their main applications in adsorption, separation, catalysis, and electrochemistry fields.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs), which feature high surface areas and designable pore walls, have attracted much attention recently as a result of combining the advantages of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. Because of the diversity of chemical reactions, one could design polymer frameworks with unique functionalities used as active sites and ligands in catalysis. In the view of green chemistry, this perspective is focused mainly on rational preparation of the porous organic polymers under metal-free conditions and their applications in heterogeneous catalysis. It is observed that many POP-based heterogeneous catalysts demonstrate superior catalytic properties, even better than the homogeneous counterparts. The strategies for designing highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts are briefly assessed.

Abstract:The unique catalytic properties of natural enzymes have inspired chemists to develop biomimetic catalyst platforms for the intention of retaining the unique functions and solving the application limitations of enzymes, such as high costs, instability and unrecyclable ability. Porous materials possess unique advantages for the construction of biomimetic catalysts, such as high surface areas, thermal stability, permanent porosity and tunability. These characteristics make them ideal porous matrices for the construction of biomimetic catalysts by immobilizing enzyme-mimic active sites inside porous materials. The developed porous biomimetic catalysts demonstrate high activity, selectivity and stability. In this feature article, we categorize and discuss the recently developed strategies for introducing enzyme-mimic active species inside porous materials, which are based on the type of employed porous materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), molecular sieves, porous metal silicate (PMS) materials and porous carbon materials. The advantages and limitations of these porous materials-based biomimetic catalysts are discussed, and the challenges and future directions in this field are also highlighted.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) featured with high surface areas, large pore volumes, and extraordinary thermal and chemical stabilities, have attracted much attention. In the beginning, POPs were mainly constructed from metal catalysts involving C-C coupling reactions. Recently, efficient solvothermal polymerization of POPs from organic monomers with double bonds has been developed. Because of the universality and diversity of monomer polymerization, a series of targeted active sites can be precisely incorporated into porous polymers. By taking advantage of the versatility of the design and the conditions employed for the fabrication of polymers, both the composition and porosity of POPs could be effectively tailored. This survey will focus on recent developments of strategies for the design of porous polymers as efficient heterogeneous catalysts from co-polymerization of skeleton molecules with functional groups to self-polymerization of functional organic groups. These porous organic polymers with unique features offer a good opportunity to deploy highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) have well-defined porosities, high surface areas, and attractive surface chemical functionalities. Because of these properties, POPs and their derivatives, including their pyrolysis (carbonaceous) products, have broad applications in catalysis, absorption, separation, sensing, biomedical engineering, and energy storage/conversion. In particular, both the porosity and morphology of porous materials have crucial impacts on their performance. The controlled synthesis of morphological defined POPs via various assembly approaches offers an effective route to prepare novel nanomaterials with broad application scope in the above-mentioned fields. Therefore, a summary of recent research related to POPs will stimulate researchers to explore this field at a deeper level. This review provides a summary and analysis of progress in the last decade toward the development of morphologically controlled POPs. Established works and recent progress in the synthesis of these materials are first reviewed, followed by the systematic discussion of the methodologies and key parameters for the fabrication of diverse morphology-controlled POPs. The various emerging applications afforded by the POPs are summarized, and special attention is paid to the relationship between the morphology and performance of POP materials. Finally, current challenges in the development of application-driven morphological control are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will encourage future investigation of POPs with defined morphologies as well as exploration on hitherto unknown characteries of the morphology derived innovative applications.

Abstract:Covalent linkages facilitate the connection of organic building blocks, thereby constructing porous organic polymers (POPs). The remarkable attributes of porous organic polymers, such as adjustable porosities, low densities, high surface specificity areas, variable compositions, convenient post-functionalization, high carbon contents, and robust chemical and thermal stabilities, make them a subject of significant interest. These polymers incorporate oxygen, nitrogen, and other non-metallic atoms, as well as extended conjugation, further enhancing their appeal. POPs can be categorized into four distinct groups: covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). The synthesis of POPs involves processes such as polymerization and polycondensation. In recent years, POPs have emerged as promising electrocatalysts, exhibiting favorable activity and significant progress in various electrocatalytic reactions. These reactions encompass a wide range, including the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), nitrate reduction reaction, hydrogen oxidation reaction, nitrobenzene reduction reaction, and benzyl alcohol reaction. The exceptional performance of POPs as electrocatalysts can be attributed to their well-preserved compositional and structural properties. This tutorial review aims to highlight the catalytic applications of POPs across multiple fields, namely environmental, energy (including water splitting and hydrogen production, fuel cells, metal-air batteries, electrochemical cells, and supercapacitors), and biomedical areas (such as drug delivery, biosensing, bioimaging, and bio-separation). Moreover, the review delves into the current challenges, and will also provide future prospects.

Abstract:Enzymes are among the most sophisticated catalysts with unique features of high substrate affinity, unmatched catalytic efficiency and specificity. However, their practical applications are hindered by their high cost, the highly restricted catalytic conditions and their fragile nature. To solve these problems of enzymes for practical applications, biomimicry has therefore emerged as an effective approach to synthesize highly efficient biomimetic catalysts by imitating certain key features of enzymes. To tune the pore structures and modify the functional groups of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), the porosity, functionality and hydrophobic/hydrophilic pore nature of the emerging porous materials are systematically tunable, which endow them to match certain enzymatic features, including structural features, active sites, microenvironments, assistant sites and/or catalytic properties of enzymes. Compared with their enzyme counterparts, biomimetic MOF catalysts present the advantages of broadened applicable conditions and enhanced stability, and sometimes they exhibit catalytic properties that are not possessed by the native enzymes. This review will selectively illustrate biomimetic MOF catalysts, consisting of immobilized biomimetic active sites on the pore surfaces or inside the pore space of porous MOFs. We will discuss the design principles and synthetic strategies for biomimetic MOF catalysts, and the relationships between their catalytic properties and structures. The key roles of active sites, microenvironment, transmission channels and co-catalytic sites, associated with the synergistic catalysis of biomimetic MOFs, will be addressed. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Hyper-crosslinked porous organic nanomaterials, especially the hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs), are a unique class of materials that combine the benefits of high surface area, porous structure, and good chemical and thermal stability all rolled into one. A wide range of synthetic methods offer an enormous variety of HCPs with different pore structures and morphologies, which has allowed HCPs to be developed for gas adsorption and separations, chemical adsorption and encapsulation, and heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present a systematic review of recent approaches to pore size modulation and morphological tailoring of HCPs and their applications to catalysis. We mainly compare the effects of pore size modulation and morphological tailoring on catalytic applications, aiming to pave the way for researchers to develop HCPs with an optimal performance for modern applications.

Abstract:To mimic the carbon cycle at a kinetically rapid pace, the sustainable conversion of omnipresent CO2 to value-added chemical feedstock and hydrocarbon fuels implies a remarkable prototype for utilizing released CO2. Porous organic polymers (POPs) have been recognized as remarkable catalytic systems for achieving large-scale applicability in energy-driven processes. POPs offer mesoporous characteristics, higher surface area, and superior optoelectronic properties that lead to their relatively advanced activity and selectivity for CO2 conversion. In comparison to the metal organic frameworks, POPs exhibit an enhanced tendency toward membrane formation, which governs their excellent stability with regard to remarkable ultrathinness and tailored pore channels. The structural ascendancy of POPs can be effectively utilized to develop cost-effective catalytic supports for energy conversion processes to leapfrog over conventional noble metal catalysts that have nonlinear techno-economic equilibrium. Herein, we precisely surveyed the functionality of POPs from scratch, classified it, and provided a critical commentary of its current methodological advancements and photo/electrochemical achievements in the CO2 reduction reaction.

Abstract:The widespread application of fuel cells is hampered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which traditionally necessitates the use of high-cost platinum group metal catalysts. The indispensability of these metal catalysts stems from their ability to overcome kinetic barriers, but their high cost and scarcity necessitate alternative strategies. In this context, porous organic polymers (POPs), which are built up from the molecular level, are emerging as promising precursors to produce carbonaceous catalysts owning to their cost-effectiveness, high electrical conductivity, abundant active sites and extensive surface area accessibility. To enhance the intrinsic ORR activity and optimize the performance of these electrocatalysts, recognizing, designing, and increasing the density of active sites are identified as three crucial steps. These steps, which form the core of our review, serve to elucidate the link between the material structure design and ORR performance evaluation, thereby providing valuable insights for ongoing research in the field. Leveraging the precision of polymer skeletons based on molecular units, POP-derived carbonaceous catalysts provide an excellent platform for in-depth exploration of the role and working mechanism for the specific active site during the ORR process. In this review, the recent advances pertaining to the synthesis techniques and electrochemical functions of various types of active sites, pinpointed from POPs, are systematically summarized, including heteroatoms, surficial substituents and edge/defects. Notably, the structure–property relationship, between these active sites and ORR performance, are discussed and emphasized, which creates guidelines to shed light on the design of high-performance ORR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Efficient capture of CO2 and its conversion into other high value-added compounds by electrochemical methods is an effective way to reduce excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Porous polymeric materials hold great promise for selective adsorption and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to their high specific surface area, tunable porosity, structural diversity, and chemical stability. Here, we review recent research advances in this field, including design of porous organic polymers (POPs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and functional nitrogen-containing polymers for capture and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In addition, key issues and prospects for the optimal design of porous polymers for future development are elucidated. This review is expected to shed new light on the development of advanced porous polymer electrocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The recent applications of porous organic polymers (POPs) as heterogeneous catalysts for visible light-induced organic transformations are summarized. POPs are constructed from conjugated organic monomers, having the features of convenient synthesis and characterization, high stability for quick recovery and reuse, structural diversity as well as high modifiability. POPs possess rigid conjugated frameworks, relatively large surface areas, tunable porosity and typically insoluble in water or organic solvents, and thus ideal platforms for the development of heterogeneous catalysts. Through incorporating conjugated sensitizer units into the backbones or attaching the sensitizers to the backbone linkers, POPs can be developed as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for visible light-induced organic transformations. Due to their high stability and insolubility, POP catalysts can be easily recovered through filtration or centrifugation and recycled. POP-based photocatalysis combines visible light utility and catalyst recycling and thus represents a green and sustainable technique.

Abstract:The establishment of green and environmental friendly sunlight-driven organic reactions has received increasing attention since the 21st century. By virtue of their functional designability, micromesoporous structure, and thermal/chemical stability, porous organic polymers (POPs) have exhibited enormous promise in photocatalytic organic reactions as ideal potential alternatives to conventional small molecule and inorganic semiconductor catalysts. In particular, amorphous POPs are simplified in terms of preparation conditions and process flow. Herein, various amorphous POP materials based on polymers of intrinsic microporosity, hypercrosslinked polymers, conjugated microporous polymers, and porous aromatic frameworks are reviewed, while typical synthetic strategies are briefly introduced. It also highlights an overview of the research progress in photocatalytic oxidation, coupling, reduction, cycloaddition, and polymerization reactions at home and abroad in recent years. Finally, the challenges and prospects for future research on amorphous POPs are presented.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs) are highly promising materials for heterogeneous catalysis and pollutant adsorption from aqueous medium due to their high surface area, permanent porosity, monomer diversity, and synthetic versatility. In this work, two triazene-linked POPs were synthesized under mild reaction conditions, via the diazo-coupling reaction, between 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) triazine and benzidine (TAPT-Bd-POP) or 4,4′-diamino-[1,1′-biphenyl]-2,2′-disulfonic acid (TAPT-Bd(SO3H)2-POP), the latter containing intrapore sulfonic groups. These POPs, containing triazene (−NN–NH−) linkages with interesting properties, have been overlooked as a method for organic polymer synthesis. The polymers exhibited BET average pore diameters of around 10 nm, BET surface areas of up to 133 ± 2.0 m2 g–1, and thermal stability of up to 333 °C. TAPT-Bd-POP and TAPT-Bd(SO3H)2-POP were evaluated as catalysts for the metal-free Henry, Knoevenagel, and multicomponent one-pot Biginelli reactions, between aromatic aldehydes and nitromethane, ethyl cyanoacetate, and urea/ethyl acetoacetate, respectively, with moderate to almost full conversions. Both POPs were further used as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue, crystal violet, phenol red, phenol, Cu(II), and Cr(VI), with maximum adsorption capacities up to 953 ± 71 mg g–1 for the adsorption of methylene blue. These results show the versatility of these polymers for heterogeneous catalysis and environmental remediation.

Triazine-Based Porous Organic Polymers: Synthesis and Application in Dye Adsorption and Catalysis

Abstract:The scientific community has been developing promising materials to increase the sustainability and efficiency of production processes and pollutant environmental remediation strategies. Porous organic polymers (POPs) are of special interest, as they are insoluble custom-built materials at the molecular level, endowed with low densities and high stability, surface areas, and porosity. This paper describes the synthesis, characterization, and performance of three triazine-based POPs (T-POPs) in dye adsorption and Henry reaction catalysis. T-POPs were prepared by a polycondensation reaction between melamine and a dialdehyde (terephthalaldehyde (T-POP1) or isophthalaldehyde derivatives with a hydroxyl group (T-POP2) or both a hydroxyl and a carboxyl group (T-POP3)). The crosslinked and mesoporous polyaminal structures, with surface areas between 139.2 and 287.4 m2 g−1, positive charge, and high thermal stability, proved to be excellent methyl orange adsorbents, removing the anionic dye with an efficiency >99% in just 15–20 min. The POPs were also effective for methylene blue cationic dye removal from water, reaching efficiencies up to ca. 99.4%, possibly due to favorable interactions via deprotonation of T-POP3 carboxyl groups. The modification of the most basic polymers, T-POP1 and T-POP2, with copper(II) allowed the best efficiencies in Henry reactions catalysis, leading to excellent conversions (97%) and selectivities (99.9%).

Abstract:Porphyrin Porous Organic Polymers (POPs) have been proved to have outstanding photocatalytic activity and can be used in several fields. Our research aims to the morphological engineering of porphyrin POPs materials. Using SiO2 as template materials, the morphological structures of Porphyrin POPs could be well controlled in the nanoscale. We modified the silica sphere with amino group and aldehyde group and then used the typical Stöber method to synthesize the porphyrin structure. The samples were well characterized by nitrogen adsorption, Power X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra and the analysis results showed that the morphorlogy and size of the sphere Porphyrin POPs were well controlled. After etch, we get a shell structure made by polyporphyrin POPs in nanoscale. The shell structure of the porphyrin POPs paving the way for the applications as treatment platform in vivo.
