Abstract:Shock induced separating flows in a scramjet intake has been studied by using a computational fluid dynamics approach. A configuration of scramjet intake geometry consisting of two exterior compression ramps, followed by a subsequent inlet and interior isolator/diffuser assembly, is chosen. The flow conditions are incoming Mach 7 with free-stream static temperature of 46.3K and wall temperature of 300K, respectively. Consequently, oblique shock wave will be formed and its interaction with viscous boundary layers will lead to flow separation that is responsible for the loss of mass flow, total pressure and several other effects. Simulations confirmed that it is necessary to include the cowl wedge in order to predict wall pressure distributions along the lower surface of the intake walls. It is also shown that mesh topology has some influences on prediction results with structured mesh gives better predictions than that of hybrid mesh. A total of eight turbulence models have been applied and results have shown reasonably good agreement with the experimental measurements and other numerical predictions, with small differences occur in localized regions particularly after shock reflection inside the intake channel. Not surprisingly, shock induced flow separation occurs and it correlates well with higher wall pressure and heating downstream. This phenomenon will have significant impact on deteriorating boundary layer property and consequently the engine performance.

Abstract:Aerodynamic heating in hypersonic flow presents one of the most serious challenges in the design of space vehicles. In the present study, heat flux reduction mechanism of the pulsed counterflowing jet from the nose of a blunt body is numerically investigated. Flow field around the hemisphere model is calculated in hypersonic free stream of Mach number 10 and Knudsen number 0.4. Considering that the external flow field is highly rarefied, recent works have demonstrated the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) technique to accurately predict the flow field under steady-state conditions. For supersonic flow with a counterflowing jet, the mean free path could vary by orders of magnitude within the computation domain and the computational mesh size in DSMC should be of one third of local mean free path (MFP) of the gas due to the requirement of selecting colliding partners among particles. Therefore, the open-source SPARTA code with octree Cartesian mesh is utilized in our research with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which has been widely used in modern DSMC codes. AMR is crucial for efficient solutions of multi-scale problems characterized by large gradients of parameters in localized areas of the computational domain. Currently, tree-based methods have being developed for extremely large scale AMR simulations with billions of cells. As a conclusion, significant decreases of surface heat flux are obtained and counterflowing jet is proved to be effective on heat flux reduction in the vicinity of the stagnation point.
Review of Recent Experimental Studies of the Shock Train Flow Field in the Isolator

Abstract:Since the concept of hypersonic flight was proposed, progress of the related theory, experiments and simulations has been gained. As an important component of the scramjet engine, the isolator plays a key role in the engine performance and flight success. The flow mechanism it involves is very complicated. In the view point of experimental research, this paper reviews the recent progress of scramjet isolator studies, analyzes the features of the isolator flow based on fine flow diagnosis technique (nano-tracer planar laser scattering, NPLS), including the three-dimensional structures of the shock train flow field, turbulent characteristics, hysteresis motions, unstart flow and shock train leading edge detection. Studies of the isolator flow can be classified and discussed according to the wind tunnel facility, isolator design and measurement techniques. Based on this, suggestions for further research can be proposed.

Abstract:The organization of the flow field in a scramjet is of great significance in achieving stable combustion in supersonic flow. Experimental investigation of the strut-induced flow in a scramjet is conducted with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement. The central wakes along with two outer free streams can be observed in the instantaneous velocity fields. Then the calculated vorticity shows a similar distribution with the mixing layers in the single-shot image, suggesting the mixing layers a preliminary assessment of the flow. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of snapshots reveals several features beneficial for flame stabilization in the strut-induced flow, including the reverse flow, central large-scale vortex structures and the vortex structures in the mixing layers. Moreover, by comparison it is found that a significant asymmetry of strut-induced flow would compress the low-speed region and weaken the large-scale vortex structure which would present a challenge to achieve flame establishment. The research contributes to a profound understanding of strut-induced flow which may be useful for engineering design and optimization.

Abstract:Supersonic and hypersonic flows have gained considerable attention in the aerospace industry in recent years. Flow control is crucial for refining the quality of these high-speed flows and improving the performance and safety of fast aircraft. This paper discusses the distinctive characteristics of supersonic flows compared to low-speed flows, including phenomena such as boundary layer transition, shock waves, and sonic boom. These traits give rise to significant challenges related to drag, noise, and heat. Therefore, a review of several active and passive control strategies is provided, highlighting their significant advancements in flow transitions, reducing drag, minimizing noise, and managing heat. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive analysis of various research methodologies used in the application of flow control engineering, including wind tunnel testing, flight testing, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This work gives an overview of the present state of flow control research and offers insights into potential future advancements.

Abstract:A typical scramjet engine is an airbreathing engine that performs both ramjet and scramjet engine operation for supersonic and hypersonic flights. The isolator acts as a buffer between the intake and combustor. The internal flow structures of the isolator can be divided into three modes: dual-mode ramjet, dual-mode scramjet, and scramjet mode. In this study, all three modes to precisely depict the internal flow structures of the isolator are proposed, which are based on detailed mathematical and theoretical modeling. Various comparisons and validation of the results are conducted against previous studies. The ratio of the shock train to the mixing region formed by the back pressure is analyzed. In addition, the effects of back pressure of an isolator to typical flight conditions are investigated. The pseudo-shock train structure has high-frequency oscillation to the increase of flight Mach number.

Abstract:The self-excited pressure and velocity oscillations caused by the downstream back pressure in a hypersonic inlet/isolator directly affects the operational stability of a scramjet. In this work, we conduct the two-dimensional unsteady RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes) simulation to predict the flow field in the Mach 7 inlet/isolator with 147 times the freestream static pressure. With the model validated, the time evolution process of the instantaneous flow fields in the isolator is analyzed first. It is shown that the structure of the shock train exhibits an up-down asymmetry. The flow oscillations as observed near the upper wall are more complex than those near the lower wall. Furthermore, the dominant frequency of the wall pressure oscillations is approximately 520 Hz. However, the self-excited oscillations in the isolator flow are dominated with approximately 510 Hz mode but coupled with multiple harmonic higher frequencies. To identify and decompose the modes of these oscillations in the unsteady flow of the isolator, different mode decomposition technologies are applied to further examine the mechanism of such oscillations. By conducting Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis on the x -axis velocity and Mach number fields, it is shown that the first two modes consist of more than 77% of the total oscillations' kinetic energy. Additionally, the oscillations of the quadrilateral separation zone and low-speed zone near the upper wall largely determine the dominant frequency of the overall unsteady flow field. As Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) investigation is conducted on the x -axis velocity and Mach number fields, it is found that the identified first mode is almost the same as that identified by using POD. It is also found that both DMD and POD can well predict the viscous flows such as the separation zone, shear layer, and low-speed zone. Finally, the dominant frequencies predicted by the POD and DMD are revealed to be very close to the dominant frequency of the wall static pressure oscillations. The movements of multiple shock waves near the upper wall are the major incentive for the complicated change in the entropy generation rate. In general, the self-excited thermodynamic oscillations phenomenon as observed in the hypersonic inlet/isolator in a scramjet could be well analyzed by decomposing and identifying the dominant modes, which contribute mostly to the total energy of such oscillations.

Abstract:This study delves into the investigation of multi-scale flow structures and combustion characteristics in a cavity-enhanced circular scramjet operating under a Mach-4.5 freestream flow condition with a total temperature of 2200 K and a total pressure of 164 kPa. To achieve this, a hybrid large-eddy/Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method, coupled with a pressure-corrected Flamelet/Progress Variable model, is employed and validated. The combustion flow field shows abundant small- and medium-scale flow structures induced by compressibility and combustion heat release. Vorticity alteration is found to be mainly caused by these factors, with the volumetric expansion term and baroclinic term serving as the primary driving terms. The whole combustion process is characterized by zoning and multi-scale features in spatial, temporal, heat release and species distribution, arising from differences in fuel-air mixing state and chemical reaction rates in the flow field. The injection-formed bow shock and the cavity ramp-formed compression wave interact intensively with the fuel plume, enriching the turbulent structures and strongly coupling with the chemical reaction process. The cavity not only promotes fuel-air mixing and combustion, but also facilitate the rapid transition from the laminar-like flame to thickened turbulent combustion. Statistical analysis reveals that the combustion heat release is predominantly governed by the scramjet mode and the diffusion flames, and further demonstrates the multi-scale flow and chemical reaction characteristics. Most of the combustion flow field is observed to be governed by fast chemistry, primarily in the corrugated flamelet regime, while some slow chemistry zones are also identified, lying in the distributed reaction zone regime.

Abstract:Impinging jets widely exist in many engineering fields,such as a short take-off and vertical landing(SVTOL) aircraft,as well as air nozzle etc.In this paper,vortex structures and flow patterns were studied by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique.Two flow modes were found out at different impinging cases,one is axisymmetric mode and another is helical mode.The flow modes may be caused by main vortex structures in instantaneous velocity field.In the fluctuating velocity field,there are second vortex structures with reverse swirling relative to the main vortex.For both flow modes,there are stronger fluctuation velocities near the wall,caused by vortex structures.

Abstract:In this study, a compressible supersonic numerical model was established based on the open-source computational fluid dynamics software OpenFOAM. The supersonic air inflow was set in sinusoidal variation and gas hydrogen was employed as fuel for the DLR engine numerical simulation. The SST k-ω model and a 9-species 27-reaction hydrogen/oxygen chemical reaction model was employed as the turbulence and reaction mechanical kinetics models respectively. The effect of continuous variable inflow on the combustion performance for the scramjet engine was analyzed and the results showed that the combustion flame inside the scramjet engine exhibited significant partitioning phenomena around the combustion stabilization zones under periodic continuous variable inflow conditions. It was found that intense combustion zones were formed at both upstream and downstream flow as the induction of intersecting shock waves. When the flame was stabilized in the engine, the initiation position of the intense combustion zone at the upstream was transferred to the distance of twice the strut length, while the initiation position of the intense combustion zone at the downstream was anchored at a distance of about five times the strut length.

Abstract:In order to study the infrared radiation characteristics of an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle powered by a scramjet, it is necessary to solve the internal and external flow field of the air-breathing hypersonic vehicle. Owing to the complexity and difficulty of solving the three-dimensional flow and heat-transfer process in a scramjet combustor, a quasi-one-dimensional calculation method was established. Utilizing zooming technology, a combination of quasi-one-dimensional simulation within the combustion chamber and three-dimensional numerical simulation elsewhere on the vehicle was employed to obtain the flow field. The accuracy of the zooming method in determining flow, heat transfer, and infrared radiation was verified through comparison with experimental data. The results show that under the flight condition of Ma = 6, the gas temperature and wall heat flux in the scramjet combustor first increased and then decreased along the flow direction. The Mach number of the plume was smaller than that of the free flow, while the velocity of the plume was slightly larger. In the wavelength range of 3–5 μm, as the azimuth angle increased, the integrated radiation intensity of the air-breathing hypersonic vehicle demonstrated a characteristic pear-shaped distribution.

Abstract:Aircraft secondary flow systems are small-flow circulation devices that are used for thermal and cold management, flow control, and energy generation on aircraft. The aerodynamic characteristics of main-flow-based inlets have been widely studied, but the secondary-flow-based small inlets, jets, and blowing and suction devices have seldom been studied. Two types of secondary flow systems embedded in a supersonic aircraft wing, a ram-air intake and a submerged intake, are researched here. Firstly, wind tunnel tests under subsonic, transonic, and supersonic conditions are carried out to test the total pressure recovery and total pressure distortion. Secondly, numerical simulations are used to analyze the flow characteristics in the secondary flow systems. The numerical results are validated with experimental data. The calculating errors of the total pressure recovery on the ram-air and submerged secondary flow systems are 8% and 10%, respectively. The simulation results demonstrate that the total pressure distortion tends to grow while the total pressure recovery drops with the increasing Mach number. As the Mach number increases from 0.4 to 2, the total pressure recovery of the ram-air secondary flow system decreases by 68% and 71% for the submerged system. Moreover, the total pressure distortion of the ram-air and submerged secondary flow systems is increased by 19.7 times and 8.3 times, respectively. Thirdly, a detailed flow mechanism is studied based on the simulation method. It is found that the flow separation at the front part of the tube is induced by adverse pressure gradients, which primarily determine the total pressure recovery at the outlet. The three-dimensional vortex in the tube is mainly caused by the change in cross-sectional shape, which influences the total pressure distortion.

Abstract:The maximum pressure ratio of the isolator is important for studying the operating boundary of the dual mode scramjet. In this paper, the pressure rise mechanism of the dual mode scramjet engine and the characteristic of the isolator maximum pressure rise are analyzed. The operating range and performance of scramjet under the pressure rise limit are investigated using the constant cross-sectional area combustor. The maximum pressure ratio of the isolator confines the back pressure from the combustor so that the scramjet engine has a minimum freestream Mach number of each equivalence ratio. When the freestream Mach number is smaller than the minimum freestream Mach number, an expansion section may be arranged between the combustor and the isolator to balance the pressure of the combustor and that of the isolator. The expression of the minimum freestream Mach number is derived and it is found that the minimum freestream Mach number of the dual mode scramjet in both modes increases with the increase of equivalence ratio and compression ratio of the inlet. A variable divergent section is suggested to balance the pressure under different freestream Mach numbers and equivalence ratios. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this research, a CFD solver is developed for solving the 2D/3D compressible flow problem: the finite volume method based on multi-block structural grids is used to solve the compressible Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS). Included in the methodology are multiple high-order reconstruction schemes, such as the 3rd-order MUSCL (Monotone Upstreamcentered Schemes for Conservation Laws), 5th-order WENO (Weight Essentially Non-Oscillatory), and 5th-order MP (Monotonicity-Preserving) schemes. Of the variety of turbulence models that are embedded, this solver is mainly based on the shear stress transport model (SST), which is compatible with OpenMP/MPI parallel algorithms. This research uses the CFD solver to conduct steady-state flow simulation for a two-dimensional supersonic inlet/isolator, incorporating these high-precision reconstruction schemes to accurately capture the shock wave/expansion wave interaction and shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SWTBLI), among other effects. By comparing the 2D/3D computation results of the same inlet configuration, it is found that the 3D effects of the side wall cannot be ignored due to the existing strong lateral flow near the corner. To obtain a more refined turbulence simulation, the commercial software ANSYS Fluent 18.0 is used to carry out the detached eddy simulation (DES) and the large eddy simulation (LES) of the same supersonic inlet, so as to reveal the flow details near the separation area and boundary layers.
Investigation on the mode transition of a typical three-dimensional scramjet combustor equipped with a strut

Abstract:<p>A three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the two equation RNG k-ε turbulence model have been employed to capture the mode transition properties in a dual-mode scramjet combustor. Based on the code validation and the grid independency analysis, two transition processes from scram to ram mode and from ram to scram mode are analyzed in detail. The fuel equivalent ratio is controlled by linearly increasing or decreasing the injection pressure of each nozzle to achieve the mode transition. During the mode transition, the thermodynamic properties of the combustion chamber change dramatically and the flow field structure changes correspondingly. The variation of the flow field structure is mainly reflected in the upstream flow field, while the variation of the flow field temperature is mainly reflected in the downstream flow field. The obtained results show that there is an obvious temperature variation in the downstream flow field. Besides, the upstream wave structures will change when the temperature varies to a certain degree, then the mode-transition occurs completely. Since the ram mode is a more stable mode than the scram mode, and the transition to the scram mode is more difficult than the transition from the scram mode to the ram mode. The variation of the shock wave position in the isolator is accompanied by the variation of the mode transition. During the transition from scram to ram mode, the shock wave at the combustor entrance is gradually pushed out and moves forward at the position with the lowest Mach number. During the transition from ram to scram mode, the shock wave in the isolator is gradually pushed forward into the flow field, but the shock waves is still in the isolator when the flow field turns into the scram mode.</p>

Abstract:The supersonic mixing layer formed by a planar thin hydrogen jet at 2.3 Ma and a 2.0 Ma surrounding airflow in a scramjet engine model is studied in order to investigate the growth characteristics with consideration of shocks. Flow field structure and features of the supersonic mixing layer are achieved by using large eddy simulation method with the OpenFOAM software. Reasonable agreements are obtained between calculation and experiment in terms of flow field structure and component distribution. The component concentration, the thickness, the compressibility effect and the total pressure loss are analyzed. Results show that four developing regions can be observed for the growth of the mixing layer. The expansion-fan/shock-wave pattern at the injector exit makes the convective mach number decrease dramatically, leading to a reduction in compressibility effects and a contribution to the development of the mixing layer. The interaction of shock/mixing layer results in local amplification of turbulence and gain of vorticity, which is beneficial to the supersonic mixing. However, the increasement in total pressure loss is unavoidable in the presence of shocks because they can bring performance losses of the scramjet. Thus a tradeoff between the enhanced mixing efficiency and the decreased total pressure recovery should be considered in the scramjet optimization design.

Abstract:Numerical investigation of the unsteady behaviors of the hypersonic inlet caused by throttling was carried out by means of large- eddy simulation for a free stream Mach number 5.9 and the unit Reynolds number approximately 5.2 × 106m-1. Results have been validated carefully against experimental data. The throttling was caused by the plug placed near the exit of isolator. Two typical cases with and without plug are investigated. Various fundamental mechanisms dictating the flow phenomena inside the isolator have been studied systematically. The results of this study provide physical insight into the flow behaviors caused by the throttling.

Abstract:A numerical investigation into aerodynamic features of the mixed flow turbine used in a high pressure ratio turbocharger was conducted. The S-A turbulence model and Jameson's center scheme have been applied in order to get good viscous resolution, accuracy and computing efficiency. Limiting streamlines on the wall surface as well as different flow characteristics, such as entropy generation of the cross sections, were evaluated, while detailed endwall flow and secondary flow structure were analyzed. The development of different vortex, especially the tip leakage vortex, passage vortex and horseshoe vortex were discussed. The results have shown that there is a great secondary flow feature and complicated vortex system in the mixed flow turbine.
On compression level of hypersonic airflow in high-mach scramjet

Abstract:High-Mach scramjet is one of the most promising air-breathing propulsion devices to realize integration of air and space transportation. The current paper investigates a key step in design of high-Mach scramjet, namely, the compression level to be executed. The influence of compression level on hydrogen-fuel scramjet performance was analyzed using the modified thermodynamic cycle analysis method for high-Mach conditions. The theoretical results indicate that different from classical thermodynamic cycle analysis, the scramjet thrust reaches the maximum when Mach number at the entrance of combustor approaches 3. The flow loss and heat release in scramjet reach a balance near the maximum thrust state. Excessive compression can cause severe flow loss, while insufficient compression will lead to poor combustion. The numerical simulation further supports the theoretical analysis. When compression level of airflow is inadequate, the heat release rate of fuel will significantly drop. To extended the ideal operating range of high-Mach scramjet, it is suggested that the flow loss in inlet and isolator should be minimized, and the combustion efficiency of fuel in supersonic environment should be improved.
