Abstract:We demonstrate a nonlinearity optimization method by altering distribution of passive fibers in a dissipative-soliton mode-locked fiber laser to level up output parameters. In the numerical simulation, we found that the passive fiber segment after gain fiber characterizes the highest average B-integral among fiber segments. By reducing the length of this fiber section and keeping the total passive fiber length as constant, the output pulse energy can be effectively scaled up while maintaining a short dechirped pulse duration, resulting in boosting peak power. With this method, 37-nJ pulses are generated from a dissipative-soliton mode-locked cladding pumped ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber laser in the experiment. The pulse can be dechirped to 66 fs with 350 kW peak power. Moreover, the pulse pedestal is suppressed by a vector-dispersion compressor.

Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A high-slope-efficiency single-frequency (SF) ytterbium-doped fiber laser, based on a Sagnac loop mirror filter (LMF), was demonstrated. It combined a simple linear cavity with a Sagnac LMF that acted as a narrow-bandwidth filter to select the longitudinal modes. And we introduced a polarization controller to restrain the spatial hole burning effect in the linear cavity. The system could operate at a stable SF oscillating at 1064 nm with the obtained maximum output power of 32 mW. The slope efficiency was found to be primarily dependent on the reflectivity of the fiber Bragg grating. The slope efficiency of multi-longitudinal modes was higher than 45%, and the highest slope efficiency of the single longitudinal mode we achieved was 33.8%. The power stability and spectrum stability were <2% and <0.1%, respectively, and the signal-to-noise ratio measured was around 60 dB.

Abstract:In order to improve the coupling efficiency of solar fiber lasers, a new kind of transversely pumping geometry is proposed. A two-stage concentration system is designed to concentrate the sunlight into the Nd-doped fiber coiled in a ring chamber with high-reflective inner surfaces. The primary concentrator is an off-axis Fresnel lens with a radius of 600 mm, and the secondary concentrator is a compound parabolic optical waveguide. With this concentration configuration, the collection efficiency can be as high as 21.4%. 73.5 W solar power is absorbed by the fiber core according to ray-tracing simulation. Output characteristics of the solar fiber laser are further analyzed by calculating the rate equations. 2.6 W laser output is obtained and the slope efficiency reaches 3.7%.

Abstract:An experimental and theoretical investigation into a core-pumped Dy 3+ -doped ZBLAN fiber laser with 1.1 μm pumping was conducted to figure out a configuration for better slope efficiency. First, the laser was experimentally constructed with a simple Fabry–Pérot cavity incorporating AlF 3 no-core fiber endcaps. The maximum output power of 607 mW was obtained readily with a slope efficiency of 25%. Next, a 5-energy level model was adopted for a numerical simulation to figure out the optimum output mirror reflectivity for the particular experimental laser setup in terms of slope efficiency. The best slope efficiency of 30% was shown to be obtainable with an output mirror of a 22% reflection.

Abstract:High-gain Ho 3+ -doped optical fibers are imperative exigency for > 2 μm single-mode fiber lasers. Here, we have successfully developed and fabricated a low-loss Ho 3+ -doped fluorotellurite glass fiber. The high-power laser irradiation tolerance of the fiber was verified, and the end face of Ho 3+ -doped fluorotellurite glass fiber remained undamaged under a ∼ 70 W of 981 nm CW laser irradiation. An unsaturated maximum 6.35 W@2085 nm single-mode laser output with a slope efficiency of 90.4 % was achieved in a 25 cm short fiber by homemade 1976 nm laser in-band pumping. To the best of our knowledge, this is currently the highest slope efficiency reported for Ho 3+ doped fluorotellurite fiber lasers to date in a space laser cavity. The effects of the fiber length on the laser threshold, slope efficiency, and output wavelength are further discussed. This work offers valuable insights into prospective candidate materials and scheme designs for the future development of high-efficiency, long-wavelength mid-infrared ∼ 2.1 μm fiber lasers.

Abstract:In order to improve the output power of solar pumped fiber lasers, a new kind of transversely pumping configuration is proposed. The primary concentrator is an off-axis parabolic mirror array made up of ten fan-annular parabolic mirrors, and the secondary concentrator is a compound reflective concentrator composed of ten 3D compound parabolic concentrators (3D-CPCs) and a ring chamber. The collected sunlight passes through the 3D-CPCs’ inlet into the compound reflective concentrator which has a high reflecting film on the inner surface. An Nd-doped fiber is pumped when sunlight passes through the fiber core many times in the chamber. 490.8 W sunlight is absorbed by the fiber core according to ray tracing simulation. Based on solving the rate equation and the power transmission equation of the uniformly pumped solar fiber laser, 12.2 W laser output is obtained and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reaches 2.48 %. This solar concentrating system offers a new method to improve the output power of solar pumped fiber laser.

Abstract:We first demonstrate the laser performance of a compact 2.06 μm Ho: YLF laser resonantly pumped by a broadband fiber-coupled diode. In continuous-wave (CW) operation, maximum output power of 1.63 W, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 89.2%, was obtained with a near diffraction-limited beam quality. In actively Q-switched operation, maximum pulse energy of 1.1 mJ was achieved at the repetition frequency of 100 Hz. The minimum pulse duration was 43 ns. The performance in both the CW and Q-switched regimes indicates that the current fiber-coupled diode in-band pumped Ho: YLF laser has great potential in certain conditions that require several watts of output power or several millijoules of short pulse energy.

Abstract:Rare-earth-doped fiber lasers are emerging as promising high-power mid-infrared sources for the 2.6-3.0 {\mu}m and 3.3-3.8 {\mu}m regions based on erbium and holmium ions. The intermediate wavelength range, however, remains vastly underserved, despite prospects for important manufacturing and defense applications. Here, we demonstrate the potential of dysprosium-doped fiber to solve this problem, with a simple in-band pumped grating-stabilized linear cavity generating up to 1.06 W at 3.15 {\mu}m. A slope efficiency of 73% with respect to launched power (77% relative to absorbed power) is achieved: the highest value for any mid-infrared fiber laser to date, to the best of our knowledge. Opportunities for further power and efficiency scaling are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, a technique combing cascaded energy-transfer pumping (CEP) method and master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) configuration is proposed for power scaling of 1.6-um-band single-frequency fiber lasers (SFFLs), where the Er3+ ion has a limited gain. The CEP technique is fulfilled by coupling a primary signal light at 1.6 um and a C-band auxiliary laser. The numerical model of the fiber amplifier with the CEP technique reveals that the energy transfer process involves the pump competition and the in-band particle transition between the signal and auxiliary lights. Moreover, for the signal emission, the population density in the upper level is enhanced and the effective population inversion is achieved due to the CEP. A single-frequency MOPA laser at 1603 nm with an output power of 52.6 W is obtained experimentally. Besides, a slope efficiency of 30.4% is improved by more than 10% through the CEP technique. Both the output power and slope efficiency are by far the highest for 1.6-um-band SFFLs. Meanwhile, a laser linewidth of 5.2 kHz and a polarization-extinction ratio of ~18 dB are obtained at the maximum output power. The proposed technique provides an optional method of increasing the slope efficiency and power scaling for fiber lasers operating at L-band.

Abstract:A broadband two-pump optical parametric amplifier with ultra-flat gain spectra is proposed in a single-section highly nonlinear fiber. By elaborately setting the dispersions and pump wavelength space, a gain over 250nm with 0.02-dB uniformity is obtained. The pump polarizations and fiber length can be changed, achieving polarization-insensitive or higher gain, while the flatness and bandwidth of gain curve remain the same.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high power mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator that was pumped by a linearly polarized, pulsed Ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Cascaded parametric conversion was realized to obtain a higher conversion efficiency from the pump of 1.06 mu m to the expected idler similar to 3.8 mu m. A monolithic aperiodically poled magnesium-oxide doped lithium niobate was designed to compensate the phase mismatches of the nonlinear conversions from the pump to idler and the primary signal to idler simultaneously. The highest idler output power of 4.35 W at 3.81 mu m was obtained under the pump power of 24.8 W at 1063.5 nm with pump-to-idler conversion efficiency of 17.5% and slope efficiency of 21.3%.

Abstract:The power scaling of ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) lasers emitting at the wavelength range of 1030 nm–1060 nm has been limited by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect, and transverse mode instability (TMI). These effects pose challenges in achieving a high-output power laser within the range of 1030 nm–1060 nm while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio. Based on a counter-pumped fiber laser amplifier utilizing our self-developed ytterbium-doped fiber, we have successfully showcased a 4.8-kW laser output at 1050 nm, accompanied by an 85.3% slope efficiency and nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. By effectively applying ASE and TMI, and controlling the Raman Stokes at ∼17 dB below the primary signal wavelength, we have achieved optimal performance at the maximum power level. This high efficiency has been attained through a pump-sharing structure combined with cost-effective, non-wavelength-stabilized 976-nm laser diodes.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new high efficiency architecture for cascaded Raman fiber lasers based on a single pass cascaded amplifier configuration. Conversion is seeded at all intermediate Stokes wavelengths using a multi-wavelength seed source. A lower power Raman laser based on the conventional cascaded Raman resonator architecture provides a convenient seed source providing all the necessary wavelengths simultaneously. In this work we demonstrate a 1480nm laser pumped by an 1117nm Yb-doped fiber laser with maximum output power of 204W and conversion efficiency of 65% (quantum-limited efficiency is ~75%). We believe both the output power and conversion efficiency (relative to quantum-limited efficiency) are the highest reported for cascaded Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:A solar-pumped laser with bulk active medium generally requires a considerable amount of concentrated solar power for initiating laser emission. In previous work, 54.9 W threshold incoming solar power was found for a Ce:Nd:YAG solar laser by a 0.075 m 2 effective area parabolic mirror. In the present work, a 0.0615 m 2 area Fresnel lens was used to concentrate incoming solar power to a 2 mm diameter, 30 mm length Ce:Nd:YAG rod. 1.81 W continuous-wave 1064 nm solar laser output power was measured, corresponding to 3.15% solar-to-laser conversion efficiency, 4.4% laser slope efficiency, and 29.4 W/m 2 collection efficiency. More importantly, threshold incoming solar power as low as 16.5 W was achieved, representing a 3.33 times reduction in threshold solar power, as compared to previous record by the parabolic mirror. By using a 0.0855 m 2 area Fresnel lens, 2.83 W solar laser power was also measured, leading to 3.56% solar-to-laser conversion efficiency, 4.9% laser slope efficiency, and 33.1 W/m 2 collection efficiency. Low threshold incoming solar power of 22.7W was also obtained, representing a 2.42 times reduction in threshold solar power in relation to the previous record. Notably, 1.41 W TEM 00 mode solar laser power was also measured by adopting an asymmetric laser resonant cavity, resulting in 2.06% solar-to-TEM 00 mode laser conversion efficiency, which, to the best of our knowledge, is 2.61 times larger than the previous record by Nd:YAG medium.

Abstract:In this study, a kilowatt-level high-efficiency narrow-linewidth all-fiber Tm3+-doped continuous-wave laser operating at 1.95 μm is demonstrated. Benefitting from an advanced boost design of a two-stage main amplifier, it not only effectively manages heat dissipation resulting from the high pump-induced quantum defect but also realizes the controlled extraction of optical gain and improves the optical conversion efficiency. Finally, this laser system has realized an output power of 1018 W, a linewidth of 3.8 GHz, and a slope efficiency of 60.0% simultaneously. Moreover, a high optical signal-to-noise ratio of over 45 dB and excellent beam quality of M2 factors 1.19 are obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the narrowest linewidth and highest slope efficiency achieved in a kilowatt-level Tm3+-doped fiber laser. Such a high-performance laser is ideally suited for mid-infrared generation and remote sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel end-pumped slab Nd:YVO4 laser with a multifolded quasi-concentric resonator (FCR) is reported. This planar-folded stable resonator matches the sheet-shaped pump volume with the TEM00 mode and yields highly efficiently laser operation with a good beam quality. In a prototype experiment, a 19.55-W output was achieved with a pump power of 45 W, which was single mode in one direction. In addition, the optical-to-optical efficiency reached 43.4%. After introducing a telescope system into the folding plane, a 10.23-W quasi-TEM00 output was obtained, and the overall efficiency was 22.7%.

Abstract:TEM00-mode operation is a requirement in many laser-based applications due to the small divergence and high-power density of the emitted laser beam. A solar laser scheme was designed and numerically studied with the goal of increasing the solar-to-laser power conversion efficiency in the TEM00-mode operation. The collection and primary concentration of sunlight was performed via twelve sets of folding mirrors and Fresnel lenses, toward a laser head composed of a fused silica torus volume and seven Ce:Nd:YAG rods, in a side-pump configuration. With this scheme, TEM00-mode laser power totaling 212.39 W could potentially be produced from seven beams, with six of them being 32.60 W each and with Mx2 = 1.00, My2 = 1.01 quality factors. Notably, 35.40 W/m2 collection efficiency and, most importantly, 3.73% solar-to-laser power conversion efficiency were numerically achieved. The latter efficiency value represents a 1.81-time improvement over the experimental record, established with a prototype that had a single Ce:Nd:YAG rod in an end-side pump configuration.
