Abstract:Compared with the original Discrete Element Method, the coarse-grained DEM significantly improves simulation efficiency. In CG DEM, the coarse-grained ratio is defined as the diameter of the coarse-grained particle divided by the diameter of the original particle. When the upper limit of coarse-grained ratio is used, the simulation is the most efficient. The upper value for simulating mixing process of spherical fuel particles was determined using a multi-level methodology. The adequacy of the upper value of the coarse-grained ratio was assessed by comparing the mixing characteristics and kinetic prop-erties of the coarse-grained particle systems with those of the original particle systems in a rotating drum with blades. The impact of rotation speed and particle number on the upper value was examined and dis-cussed. It was observed that the kinetic energy increases with an increase in the coarse-grained ratio, lim-iting the efficiency improvement. To ensure kinetic energy conservation, a scaling law for the restitution coefficient was proposed. Combined with the Reduced Particle Stiffness method, the simulation time of the coarse-grained case is only 1/3030 that of the original case (with a particle number of 2.3 million) when the upper limit of the coarse-grained ratio was used (12.0).(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of The Society of Powder Technology Japan. Abstract:The granular flow involving ellipsoidal particles in a horizontal rotating drum is investigated by DEM, in which ellipsoidal particle is modeled by super-ellipsoids and periodic boundary condition is adopted. Recurring to the abundant information obtained from the DEM simulation, a comparably synthetical investigation is performed for the better understanding of the fundamental of the granular flow involving ellipsoidal particles in a horizontal rotating drum. All cases utilized in this work are characterized by the continuous flow, namely in rolling/cascading regime. How the aspect ratio and the rotation speed of the drum influence the transverse mixing is surveyed. And some attempt has been made to elucidate the above influence on the particle mixing from the perspective of particle diffusion and particle convection. A brief description about the influence of the aspect ratio and rotation speed of the drum on the axis dispersion is also provided. The Euler angles, including the precession angle, nutation angle and spin angle, are utilized to study the distribution profiles of the orientation for ellipsoidal particles. DEM investigation of the axial dispersion behavior of a binary mixture in the rotating drum

Abstract:The granular motion of binary-size mixture in a three-dimensional rotating drum operating in the rolling regime is numerically tracked via the discrete element method (DEM), with a focus on the axial dispersion behavior of the different particle types in response to the inherent size-segregation. Accordingly, the evolution with time, the frequency distribution and the space-time profiles of the axial dispersion coefficients are evaluated. The results demonstrate that (i) the fast radial segregation gives rise to the sharp increase and decrease of the axial dispersion coefficients of respectively the large and small particles in both the active and passive regions; (ii) the axial dispersion coefficients in the active region is an order-of-magnitude higher than that in the passive region; (iii) after the radial segregation, the frequency distributions of the axial dispersion coefficients of the large particles, the small particles and all the particles are normal distributions; (iv) the greatest axial dispersion coefficients of both particle types are at the upper part of the active region near the bed surface; (v) increasing the rotating speed and particle diameter ratio clearly enhances the axial dispersion intenstity in the active and passive regions; and (vi) axial segregation results in the greatest axial dispersion near the end walls, while most of the rest of the drum exhibit equally low axial dispersion. The results obtained here contribute towards understanding the dynamical response of the axial dispersion of different particle types to the inevitable radial and axial segregation phenomena, and are expected to be valuable for improving operations and advancing theoretical models of such granular systems with constituents of different sizes.

Abstract:Understanding the flow and mixing of rod-like particles is fundamental because of the widespread use of rods in the process industry. In this paper, discrete element method is used to investigate the flow and mixing of rod-like particles in a horizontal rotating drum, with rod-like particles being modeled by super-ellipsoids. The influence of the aspect ratio of the rod and the rotation speed of the drum on the flow of rod-like particles is studied. The investigation of spherical particles is also included in this paper to reveal the differences between rod-like and spherical particles. The simulation results show that the flow of rods is more intermittent than that of spheres and that there is more intermittent flow for rod-like particles with larger aspect ratios. Both the aspect ratio of the rod and the rotation speed of the drum considerably influence particle mixing. The mixing rate, as quantified by the slope of the variation in the mixing index with respect to drum revolution, increases as rotation speed and aspect ratio decrease. The study of particle orientation indicates that rod-like particles have a preferred orientation during rotation of the drum: the major axis of the rod inclines to be parallel to the end plate of the drum.

Abstract:Radial segregation easily occurs in a horizontal rotating drum partially filled with particles of different properties under various operational conditions.DEM (discrete element method) simulations and experiments were combined together to investigate the segregation of bi-disperse particles of the same density but unequal sizes in a quasi-two-dimensional horizontal rotating drum.A linear spring-dashpot model was adopted in simulations.An easy and effective image analysis was conducted for the segregation/mixing of particles of different sizes.By comparing the repose angles,degrees of segregation,and particular phenomenon ("sun pattern" and reverse segregation) in simulations under different operating conditions with those in experiments,the discrete-element model is verified.The effects of rotational speed and volume ratio on radial segregation are also considered systematically.From an analysis of the results of experiments and simulations,the degree of segregation generally decreases with increasing rotational speed,whereas the volume ratio shows different influences on segregation in different flow regimes.Moreover,the mechanism underlying the reverse segregation in the cataracting regime has been clarified as well.

Abstract:Mixing behaviors of equal-sized glass beads in a rotating drum were investigated by both DEM simulations and experiments. The experiments indicated that higher rotation speed can significantly enhance mixing. The particle profiles predicted by 2D DEM simulation were compared with the experimental results from a quasi-2D drum, showing inconsistency due to reduction of contacts in the single-layer 2D simulation which makes the driving friction weaker than that in the quasi-2D test, better results could be reached by specifying a higher frictional coefficient between the particles and the cylinder wall. In order to explore the influences of physical properties (density, size or friction) on mixing behavior, numerical 2D simulations were carried out systematically, in which one examined specific property being examined was exaggerated while the others were kept the same as that in the control group. The DEM simulations reveal that particle density and size are the dominating factors affecting mixing behaviors, while the effect of frictional coefficient is less significant. However, segregation due to any of the factors can be diminished by specifying a proper particle size distribution (multi-size with lower size ratio).

Abstract:This study investigates mixing and heat conduction of granular particles in a rotating drum by DEM simulation and a particle–particle heat conduction model. Based on the Lagrangian viewpoint, the particle trajectory, velocity, radius of gyration, convolution, temporal intermittency factor, probability density function, and the temperature difference or rate are analyzed to study the characteristics of particle mixing and heat conduction in the drum. The results illustrate a cyclic and intermittently pulsed variation for the radius of gyration and velocity. The intermittency factor and probability density function show the fundamental differences for the cyclic motion characteristics under different rotation velocities. Two mechanisms of mixing augmentation by the increased rotation velocity at the low rotation speed stage and a stable state of a self-maintained equilibrium at the high rotation speed stage are demonstrated, provided the flow regime is not changed. The variations of E(Th(⁎)−Tl(⁎)) in time and revolutions show the relative importance of contact duration and mixing on heat conduction, as well as the influencing factor of flow regimes. The increase rates of E(Th(⁎)−Tl(⁎)) show the maximum efficiency of particle–particle heat conduction and the most effective operation condition or optimal approach for heat conduction enhancement.

Abstract:A regular tetrahedron is the simplest three-dimensional structure and has the largest non-sphericity. Mixing of tetrahedral particles in a thin drum mixer was studied by the soft-sphere-imbedded pseudo hard particle model and compared with that of spherical particles. The two particle types were simulated with different rotation speeds and drum filling levels. The Lacey mixing index and Shannon information entropy were used to explore the effects of sphericity on the mixing and motion of particles. Moreover, the probability density functions and mean values and variances of motion velocities, including translational and rotational, were computed to quantify the differences between the motion features of tetrahedra and spheres. We found that the flow regime depended on the particle shape in addition to the rotation speed and filling level of the drum. The mixing of tetrahedral particles was better than that of spherical particles in the rolling and cascading regimes at a high filling level, whereas it may be poorer when the filling level was low. The Shannon information entropy is better than the Lacey mixing index to evaluate mixing because it can reflect the real change of flow regime from the cataracting to the centrifugal regime, whereas the mixing index cannot. Abstract:The fluidized-bed drum technology involving the combination of a fluidized bed and a rotating drum is used for the granulation and coating of particles, which has been successfully applied in industry. Nevertheless, there should be few published fundamental studies for exploring the particle flow behaviors in a fluidized-bed drum, particularly in the particle level. Consequently, the particle-scale DEM (Discrete Element Method) was coupled with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in this work to simulate the particle-fluid flow system in a fluidized bed drum. The experiments in a small horizontal fluidized-bed drum were also carried out to validate the accuracy of our CFD-DEM model. Subsequently, the particle flows in a large inclined fluidized-bed drum were simulated by CFD-DEM, and the relatively comprehensive investigation for the influences of operational conditions (including the gas inlet velocity, drum rotation speed, drum inclination angle and fluidized-bed inclination angle) on the particle flow behaviors (e.g., the particle holdup, particle velocity and particle residence time) was carried out. According to the simulation results, the particle flow behaviors would be significantly affected by these operational conditions. However, increasing the gas inlet velocity could weaken the effects of drum rotation speed, drum inclination angle and fluidized-bed inclination angle.
An Experimentally Validated Coarse-Grain DEM Study of Monodisperse Granular Mixing

Abstract:Considering being applied to industrial applications with billions of particles, the discrete element method (DEM) is still limited by the computational competence of computers, regardless of the advances in computer hardware or parallel programming techniques. In this paper, therefore, a coarse-grain (CG) discrete element method is adopted to deal with the immense number of particles in granular mixing, which has the potential to gain considerable computational advantage for industry scale DEM simulations. The experiment results as well as the simulation results prove the validity of taking place of smaller particles by larger particles with sacrificing a little detail in a drum flow. The simulation results also indicate that the rotation speed of the drum nearly has no effect on the application of the CG-DEM. The mixing tendency as well as the flow pattern of particles in the CG system is quite similar to the original system. In addition, the simulation results of an industrial application show that the CG-DEM is applicable to the double-screw conical mixer. The granular mixing in the double-screw conical mixer can be predicted by the CG-DEM, and the prediction of device power consumption is accurate by correcting the friction coefficient based on the theory of the CG-DEM, and the prediction of the wear rate of the device is broadly accurate after being corrected by a correction factor. Using CG-DEM can efficiently save computational cost with cutting back on the level of detail and accuracy.

Abstract:The dispersion characteristics of the granular material frequently encountered in many chemical industries play an important role in the system operation since it is related to the solid residence time, and thus further influence the heat and mass transfer behavior of the whole process. To shed some light, the discrete element method (DEM) is employed here to study a three-dimensional rotating drum, with the key focus being the axial dispersion characteristics of the solid phase. Our results prove the natural existence of a preferential channel for axial dispersion spanning the entire drum length, which provides insights on the region where the most extensive axial segregation effects are expected. Furthermore, we show that the axial solid dispersion coefficients adhere to normal frequency distributions in the active region, passive region and the entire drum. Also, increasing the rotating speed enhances while increasing the fill level diminishes the axial dispersion intensity in the system. Collectively, the results here provide new and valuable insights on the axial dispersion characteristics in the rotating drum, which is useful for the further understanding and optimization of the system.

Abstract:Despite the wide research of powder and solid mixing in science and industry, a majority of researches focus on numerical simulation. Theory on the actual mixing of solid particles in 3D rotary drums is needed. In this work, the axial segregation of binary spherical granular particle is studied experimentally in a 3D tumbler to find the effect of key outer parameters on the mixing results. Experiment results indicate the outer parameter-rotational speed will have significant effect on axial segregation and there is some kind of competition between axial segregation and radial segregation. In addition, The initial loading method has noting to do with axial segregation. These results will provide guidance for particle mixing in cylinder mixer.

Abstract:The double-screw conical mixer, as a mixing device, has been widely used in lots of industries for its high mixing rate and quality. However, a deeper understanding as well as a large-scale simulation on particle mixing in this kind of mixer is still lacking. In this paper, discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to investigate the flow pattern of particles and the mixing performance of the double-screw conical mixer with particle number from 0.5 to 1.1 million. The effects of the rotation speed and the sweeping speed on mixing rate and quality are studied. The particle size ratio is also investigated to reveal the mixing performance of this mixer. The simulation results indicate that particles are well mixed in the overall and local mixing domain as well as in the binary system with a large particle diameter ratio of 1:3. When the rotation ratio is at a specific value, the mixer will have a better mixing performance. Considering both the mixing performance and the power consumption, the optimal condition for operation can be obtained. It also can be found that particle breakage is less likely to occur here. Compared with other parts of the mixer, the wear rate on the screw edge is larger.
DEM Study of the Size-Induced Segregation Dynamics of a Ternary-Size Granular Mixture in the Rolling-Regime Rotating Drum

Abstract:Segregation induced by size, shape, or density difference of the granular material is inevitable in both natural and industrial processes; unfortunately, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. In view of the ubiquitous continuous particle size distributions, this study builds on the considerable knowledge gained so far from binary-size mixtures and extends it to a ternary-size mixture to understand the impact of the presence of a third particle size in the three-dimensional rotating drum operating in the rolling flow regime. The discrete element method is employed. The evolution of segregation, the active-passive interface, and the dynamical response of the particle-scale characteristics of the different particle types in the two regions are investigated. The results reveal that the medium particles are spatially sandwiched in between the large and small particles in both the radial and axial directions and therefore exhibit behaviors intermediate to the other two particle types. Compared to the binary-size mixture, the presence of the medium particles leads to (i) higher purity of small particles in the innermost of the radial core, causing a decrease of the translational velocity of small particles; (ii) decrease and increase of the collision forces exerted on, respectively, the large and small particles in both regions; and (iii) increase in the relative ratio of the active-passive exchange rates of small to large particles. The results obtained in the current study therefore provide valuable insights regarding the size-segregation dynamics of granular mixtures with constituents of different sizes.
Enhancing Mixing of Particles by Baffles in A Rotating Drum Mixer

Abstract:Baffles with shape of "-" (single baffle), "+" (cross-baffles with four arms) and "*" (baffles with 6 arms) are used to enhance the mixing of particles in a rotating drum mixer. A micro-dynamics study of mixing and segregation of a bi-disperse system of two particle sizes in the rotating drum with these three kinds of baffles is carried out using the discrete element method (DEM). The effect of the baffles on mixing, and the mechanisms of mixing enhancement by the baffles are discussed and analyzed. Simulation results show that in an unbaffled drum mixer, particle convection, particle diffusion, and size segregation of bi-disperse particles, all play important roles in the mixing process; whereas size segregation will be largely restrained when the drum mixer has a baffle, regardless of its shape, and the degree of mixing is higher than that in an unbaffled drum mixer. The different mixing characteristics for "-" shaped baffle, "+" baffle, and "*" baffle are revealed by the simulation results. For "+" or "*" style baffles, there is an optimal size of baffles for the mixing of particles, and the optimal mixing efficiency is higher than that for "-" baffle. Abstract:<p>The flow behavior of binary-sized particles in a horizontal rotating cylinder drum (RCD) and rotating ellipsoidal drum (RED) based on the discrete element method (DEM) is predicted. The simulations in this work study the influence of flattening on the flow of binary-sized particles. The flow characteristics such as the mixing indices, the resulting contact forces, the translational granular temperature, the configurational temperature and the energy dissipation are predicted or calculated in the simulations. The results show that the changes in flattening and particle diameter can affect the flow significantly. At a high rotating speed, the mixing degree of binary-sized particles in the RED can be improved. The resulting contact forces gradually increase with the increasing of rotating speed and flattening. The large particle's velocity is larger than that of the small one. The change of rotating angle causes the oscillation of translational granular temperature and configuration temperature.</p>

Abstract:The flow behavior of polydisperse particles in rolling mode rotating drum is important in industry, but it is still not clear. In this work, the discrete element method (DEM) is used to explore the flow of particles in the three-dimensional drum. After the accuracy of simulation verified by the experimental data from literature, the particle bed is divided into active layer and passive layer. The flow behavior of polydisperse particles was revealed by studying the particle velocity, residence time, mixing and axial dispersion in different regions in the drum. By exploring the parameters such as rotation speed, filling level and the shape and position of the lifter, some ideas are provided for improving the performance of the rolling mode rotating drum. In addition, the difference of flow behavior between polydisperse particles and monodisperse particles is also given, which can provide some reference for the industrial application of complex particle system.

Abstract:The rotary drum is a useful reactor in leaching processes, yet the internal multi-phase flow hydrodynamics still lacks detailed understanding, especially for chip-like particles. This work studies the transportation mechanism of chip-like particles in a particle-liquid rotary drum by the computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) approach where particle morphology is described by a super-quadric model. After model validations, the particle-scale information (e.g., active-passive interface, mixing, dispersion, orientation, and contact force) under different rotating speeds is analyzed. The results show that two anti-directional recirculation liquid vortexes are captured in the rotary drum due to the shear of the bed surface. The active depth, mixing degree, and axial particle dispersion increase with the rotating speed. Chip-like particles tend to orient their long axes parallel to the drum wall and drum axis. The fundamental study sheds light on the design and optimization of rotary drums for mixing and leaching processes.

Abstract:Rotating drums are widely used in industries to handle and process particulate materials and heat transfer is often involved in these processes. This work numerically investigated heat transfer inside a drum mixer by coupling the discrete element method (DEM) with a conductive heat transfer model. The mixer was fitted with different types of lifters and rotated at various speeds so their effects on heat transfer characterised by heat transfer coefficient (HTC) could be investigated. The simulation results showed that the specific HTC of the particle flow increased with increasing rotating speed but decreased with the number and height of the lifters. While all types of lifters sped up heat transfer, the straight lifers were more efficient than the arc shape lifters. To better understand the mechanisms of heat transfer, the specific HTC was linked to the particle-wall contact area and dynamic behaviour of particles. The change of lifter configuration, i.e. lifter height, number and shape, mainly affected the particle-wall contact area while the change of mixer rotating speed affected particle mixing behaviour.

Abstract:A 3D three-equation linear spring-dashpot model considering the normal contact force, the tangential contact force, and the rolling friction torque, and the corresponding programs for granular dynamics were developed. The flow and the segregation of the S-type binary granular mixtures in a thin rotating horizontal drum were simulated by using the new model. The influences of the rotation speed and the load of the drum on the pattern formation were discussed. The simulation results show that the pattern formation of the S-type binary granular mixtures in the rotating drum can be predicted accurately. As the rotation speed is high, the moon pattern appears, in which the small particles concentrate in a central core and the large particles distribute in the periphery. As the rotation speed is lowered, the petal pattern is found in thin drums, and the number of petals increases as the rotation speed decreases. The process of pattern formations was obtained by the simulation. As the petal pattern forms, the wavy flow of granules in the drum appears. Finally, the necessary condition and mechanisms of the pattern formation in the thin drums are discussed in the paper.
