A Comparative Study of Six Two-dimentional Echocardiographic Methods Versus Radionuclide Ventriculography for Estimation of Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction

Abstract:To assess the accaracy of currently avallable two-dimenmonal ecnocarcuographic methods (2-DE)for estimating left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF),2-DE and gated equilibrium radionu-clide ventriculography(GERV)were performed in 52 patients with various heart diseases.Six 2-DE methods were employed to measure LVEF,including four-chamber view single plane area-lengthmethod(A),two-chamber view single pline arealength method(B),two-and four-chamber view biplane area-length method(C),four-chamber view single plane simpson method(D),two-chamber view single plane simpson method(E),and two-and four-chamber view biplane simpson method(F).The resuits showed that although LVEF measured by aix 2-DE methods all correlated highly with LVEF de-rived by GERV(r=0.84-0.91,P\u003c0.001),the best correlation obtained was between LVEF caculated method C,D and F On one hand,and those by GERV on the other.The rest three 2-DE methods,however.underestimated significantly the GERV measurement.We conclude that single or biplane simpson method should the method of choice for estimating LVEF by 2-DE.\r\n\r\nKey words: \r\ntwo-dimentional echocardiography; radionuclide ventriculography; left ventricular systolic function; left ventricular ejection fraction
