Also, the approach developed in this paper is shown to be able to study more complicated M/G/1 processor-sharing models.

Abstract:Two-stage scheduling system with multiple arrival flows is widely used in many quality of service guarantee occasions. However, there is no effective, versatile method to get the performance results for this more complex service rule system. This paper analyses a two-stage scheduling system with strict priority and generalised processor sharing scheduling discipline. By using a vertical decomposition solution method, the statistical performance bounds on the backlog and delay of each flow are derived under the exponentially bounded burstiness input model. Using a discrete time Markov-modulated On-Off process example, the performance bound results are analysed.

Abstract:In the study of large scale stochastic networks with resource management, differential equations and mean-field limits are two key techniques. Recent research shows that the expected fraction vector (that is, the tail probability vector) plays a key role in setting up mean-field differential equations. To further apply the technique of tail probability vector to deal with resource management of large scale stochastic networks, this paper discusses tail probabilities in some basic queueing processes including QBD processes, Markov chains of GI/M/1 type and of M/G/1 type, and also provides some effective and efficient algorithms for computing the tail probabilities by means of the matrix-geometric solution, the matrix-iterative solution, the matrix-product solution and the two types of RG-factorizations. Furthermore, we consider four queueing examples: The M/M/1 retrial queue, the M(n)/M(n)/1 queue, the M/M/1 queue with server multiple vacations and the M/M/1 queue with repairable server, where the M/M/1 retrial queue is given a detailed discussion, while the other three examples are analyzed in less detail. Note that the results given in this paper will be very useful in the study of large scale stochastic networks with resource management, including the supermarket models and the work stealing models.

Abstract:We investigate an M / M / 1 queue operating in two switching environments, where the switch is governed by a two-state time-homogeneous Markov chain. This model allows to describe a system that is subject to regular operating phases alternating with anomalous working phases or random repairing periods. We first obtain the steady-state distribution of the process in terms of a generalized mixture of two geometric distributions. In the special case when only one kind of switch is allowed, we analyze the transient distribution, and investigate the busy period problem. The analysis is also performed by means of a suitable heavy-traffic approximation which leads to a continuous random process. Its distribution satisfies a partial differential equation with randomly alternating infinitesimal moments. For the approximating process we determine the steady-state distribution, the transient distribution and a first-passage-time density.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a BAMP/M/1 generalized processor-sharing queue. We propose an RG-factorization approach, which can be applied to a wider class of Markovian block-structured processor-sharing queues. We obtain the expressions for both the distribution of the stationary queue length and the Laplace transform of the sojourn time distribution. From these two expressions, we develop an algorithm to compute the mean and variance of the sojourn time approximately.

Abstract:A queueing system GI~X/M/1/N with balking and batch arrivals was discussed. The interarrival and service times are arbitrarily and exponentially distributed, respectively. The distributions of the number of customers in the system at prearrival and arbitrary epochs are obtained. In addition, some performance metrics are given, such as the customer loss rate, the system utilization, the mean and variance of the queue length, the mean of the waiting time. Some application scenarios on computer communication network are discussed concerning this queueing system.

Abstract:We investigate a processor sharing queue with renewal arrivals and generally distributed service times. Impatient jobs may abandon the queue, or renege, before completing service. The corresponding stochastic processes are represented by measure valued Markov processes on R^2\_+. A scaling procedure that gives rise to a fluid model with a nontrivial, yet tractable steady state behavior, is presented. This fluid model model captures many essential features of the underlying stochastic model, and it is used to analyze the impact of impatience in processor sharing queues.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a BMAP/G/1 retrial queue with a server subject to breakdowns and repairs, where the life time of the server is exponential and the repair time is general. We use the supplementary variable method, which combines with the matrix-analytic method and the censoring technique, to study the system. We apply the RG -factorization of a level-dependent continuous-time Markov chain of M/G/1 type to provide the stationary performance measures of the system, for example, the stationary availability, failure frequency and queue length. Furthermore, we use the RG -factorization of a level-dependent Markov renewal process of M/G/1 type to express the Laplace transform of the distribution of a first passage time such as the reliability function and the busy period.

Abstract:We extend the infinitesimal perturbation analysis algorithm developed for the GI/G/1 queue to the GI/G/m queue. The primary difference is the need for additional accumulators for each server. For the M/M/2 queue, a consistency proof is given which is extendable to the M/M/m queue. For the more general GI/G/m queue, a heuristic argument is given as to why the algorithm works. In this argument, it is seen that the need for the servers to be identical is crucial for the correctness of the algorithm. Numerical results are provided.

Abstract:The queueing system which is not Markov-type is often used as amodel to study some practical engineering problems,for example,communication networks.In this paper,the problems of sensitivity analysis of the steady-state performance for an M/G/1 queueing system are discussed by studying its embedded Markov chain.The sensitivity formulas of the steady-state performance are given by the potentials of the embedded Markov chain.Since the embedded Markov chain is much simpler than the semi-Markov process that is used to describe the system states,the results in this paper will be very convenient for simulating computation of performance sensitivity and optimization of the system.
Stationary Performance Analysis of Grishechkin Processor-Sharing Queues: An Integral Equation Approach

Abstract:We compute the stationary performance metrics of a single server $M^X/G/1$ queue under a class of generalized processor-sharing scheduling policies that are proposed by Grishechkin. This class of processor-sharing policies allow service capacities to be allocated to jobs based on the amount of service they attained. In [11], Grishechkin derives an integral equation that is satisfied by the Laplace transform of the stationary performance metrics under these policies. Our main focus in this paper is to derive the solution to this integral equation. This is achieved through a series of transforms that convert the integral equation into a more tractable form, then solve it. Then we derive approximations to the density functions of the performance metrics through inverting the Laplace transforms. In the last part of the paper, we apply our results to some well-known scheduling policies that are either a special case of the Grishechkin processor-sharing policies or can be treated as the limits of a sequence Grishechkin processor-sharing policies. These examples include the egalitarian processor-sharing policy, the discriminatory processor-sharing policy, shortest residual processing time first rule, foreground-background policy and the time function scheduling policy.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the M/G/1 stochastic clearing queueing model in a three-phase environment, which is described by integro-partial differential equations (IPDEs). Our first result is semigroup well-posedness for the dynamic system. Utilizing a C0−semigroup theory, we prove that the system has a unique positive time-dependent solution (TDS) that satisfies the probability condition. As our second result, we prove that the TDS of the system strongly converges to its steady-state solution (SSS) if the service rates of the servers are constants. For this asymptotic behavior, we analyze the spectrum of the system operator associated with the system. Additionally, the stability of the semigroup generated by the system operator is also discussed.

Abstract:The paper considers a queueing system with limited processor sharing. No more than n jobs may be served simultaneously. This system may be used for modeling bandwidth sharing in wireless communication systems and processes of service in computer networks. If there are n jobs in the considered queueing system and a new job arrives, then the arriving job is lost or the service of a job is interrupted and this job is lost. We study two rules to choose the job to be lost. In accordance with one of these rules, the job with the shortest remaining length is lost. Relations are obtained between the state probabilities of considered system and the state probabilities of the corresponding unlimited processor sharing system. These relations allow to compute the state probabilities for considered system if the state probabilities for the unlimited processor sharing system are known. In the case of Poisson arrival process, the probability that the server capacity is exhausted is equal to the probability that a job is lost. We have obtained an explicit formulas for the stationary state probabilities and the loss probability for this case. These probabilities are invariant under the job length distribution under the condition that the average value of the length is fixed.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered the M/G/1 queueing system with multiple phases of operation. First, we have proven the existence and uniqueness of the time-evolving solution for this queueing system. Second, by calculating the spectral distribution of the system operator, we proved that the solution converged at most strongly to its steady-state (static) solution. We also discussed the compactness of the system's corresponding semigroup. Additionally, we investigated the asymptotic behavior of dynamic indicators. Finally, to demonstrate the exponential convergence of the solution, we conducted some numerical analysis.

Abstract:Non-Markov-type queueing systems are often used as mathematical models in studying some practical engineering problems, such as communication networks. In this paper, we consider the problems of sensitivity analysis and estimates of the steady-state performance for an M/G/1 queueing system. By studying its embedded Markov chain, we give the sensitivity formulas expressed by the potentials of the embedded Markov chain. Based on the performance potential theory and these formulas, we propose an algorithm to compute system potentials and performance derivatives for M/G/1 queueing systems. This algorithm can be directly used in controlling and optimization problems since it is based on analyzing a single sample path of the system. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the application of the algorithm.

Abstract:Queueing models can usefully represent production systems experiencing congestion due to irregular flows, but exact analyses of these queueing models can be difficult. Thus it is natural to seek relatively simple approximations that are suitably accurate for engineering purposes. Here approximations for a basic queueing model are developed and evaluated. The model is the GI/G/m queue, which has m identical servers in parallel, unlimited waiting room, and the first‐come first‐served queue discipline, with service and interarrival times coming from independent sequences of independent and identically distributed random variables with general distributions. The approximations depend on the general interarrival‐time and service‐time distributions only through their first two moments. The main focus is on the expected waiting time and the probability of having to wait before beginning service, but approximations are also developed for other congestion measures, including the entire distributions of waiting time, queue‐length and number in system. These relatively simple approximations are useful supplements to algorithms for computing the exact values that have been developed in recent years. The simple approximations can serve as starting points for developing approximations for more complicated systems for which exact solutions are not yet available. These approximations are especially useful for incorporating GI/G/m models in larger models, such as queueing networks, wherein the approximations can be components of rapid modeling tools.
