Abstract:To analyze and optimize time performance of business process for faster response to customer demands, this study aims to develop a novel method for estimating the cycle time of business processes (or workflows) with many-to-many relationships between resources and activities based on individual worklists. The developed method for estimating business process cycle time is based on M/Hn/1/∞ queuing model and the joint distribution theory of random variables. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by comparison with the existing methods with case studies. The results have shown that the proposed method can provide a more accurate estimation than conventional approaches.

Abstract:To improve business process performances, this study develops a dynamic task assignment approach for minimizing the cycle time of business processes. In particular, considering the quantity of each resource as a new parameter, a formal business process model and a novel approach to estimating the mean cycle time of activities are presented for task assignment based on individual worklists, queuing theory and stochastic theory. Then the mathematical model of task assignment and its solution for minimizing the cycle time are proposed, and the dynamic task re-assignment policy is developed to further reduce the cycle time. The results of simulation experiments and practical applications show our approach has better validity and practical viability than other approaches.

Abstract:In order to get how the proportion of customers are satisfied with the business processing time,we model a business processes with a workflow model,then get the instances' staying-time distribution at the workflow by three steps:firstly we work out the distribution function at each activity;Secondly we work out the distribution function at each basic structure;thirdly we work out the distribution function at the whole workflow model.Finally according to the given instances staying-time limit,we can know the proportion of customers that are satisfied.

Abstract:The amount of cited resources in execution process of workflow model could be optimized. With the constraint of business remaining time in a workflow model, in order to minimize the resources consumption cost, assuming the business remaining time in each activity was an exponential distribution, a method was put forward to get the quantity of each kind of resources with the goal of minimized consumption cost of resources. The relationship of the distribution of business remaining time in the 4 basic structures of the workflow model and in the single activity was given. The relationship of the amount of each kind of resource and the whole resources consumption cost were analyzed. Finally, a resource optimization example based on the workflow model was given.

Abstract:The critical path method provides a sequence of critical activities according to time-only analysis. The critical chain method goes further and provides a chain of critical activities according to both time and resource analysis. However, for multiple simultaneous projects, the criticality of activities may vary due to complex resource dependencies. Defining critical activities in multiple projects as those whose delay with postpone one or more projects, a procedure is suggested to estimate resource-constrained floats associated with project activities and hence to identify critical activities. The proposed procedure can be helpful for managing simultaneous large-scale projects with limited resources.

Abstract:To enhance customer satisfactions and improve ability of quick responses, the production type of mass customization is advocated in many manufacturing enterprises. But in the mass customization enterprises, the customization demands will influence the standard cycle time estimation, which is essential in the analysis of contracts negotiation, capacity planning, and the assignments of due dates. Hence in this paper, a combined methodology employing an analytical model and a statistical regression method is proposed to facilitate the cycle time estimation in the mass customization enterprise. Using inferential reasoning for the analytical optimal model for cost minimization, it is deduced that the relationship between the customization degree and cost coefficient provider an efficient way to estimate the cycle time accurately. And their relationship is described with a statistical regression method. Finally, a case study from a bus manufacturing enterprise is used to illustrate the detailed estimation procedures and the further discussion is presented to explicate the significance for practice.

Abstract:Workflow model analysis is performed at logic, temporal, and performance levels. This paper mainly deals with the performance level issues. Workflow net (WF-net) is extended with time information to the timing workflow net (TWF-net). To provide a formal framework for modeling and analyzing workflow, this paper proposes a multidimension workflow net (MWF-net) that include multiple TWF-nets and the organization and resource information. The algorithm to decompose a free-choice and acyclic Petri nets (PN) into a set of T-components is extended to a TWF-net containing iteration structures. Then, resource availability and workload analysis is performed. A method for computing the lower bound of average turnaround time of transaction instances processed in a MWF-net is proposed. Finally a case study is used to show that the proposed method can be effectively utilized in practice.

Abstract:Time management is an important function of workflow management systems. The corresponding issues include calculating the execution time of a process, identifying the critical path of a workflow process, scheduling the execution of workflow process and avoiding the violation of time constraints such as deadline violations, time distance violations, fixed date constraints violations and time difference constraints violations. This paper presents six time constraints that can be captured in the workflow definition. The method for identifying the critical path of a workflow process with the six time constraints is proposed accordingly. With the time management the workflow designers, executors and managers can work more efficiently during the workflow modeling or running. The workflow model with six time constraints and the time management method have been implemented in our prototype workflow management system named Cimflow.

Abstract:A time model for service-based workflow was proposed after analyzing the difference on autonomy and dynamism between traditional workflow and service-based workflow.[Time management is a critical component for workflow management. Because services are autonomous and transparent to their users, it is difficult for process managers to get structure and time information in service-based processes.] In the proposed time model, a process is divided into a public and a private part. The former contains the details of the process, such as all the time and structure information; the latter is abstracted from the former and only involves the nessassary information. An algorithm with polynomial complexity was presented to generate the public part of the process from its private one. Using this time model, process managers can conveniently carry out time management based on the public part of the model without knowing the inner detail information of the (corresponding) private part. Thus, this model ensures the security of processes.

Abstract:To identify integration point and define its priority, the integration points were classified into activity integration point, process integration point and data integration point. Then an identification method of integration points based on time cost was presented to identify the activity integration point and process integration point. In this method, the Activity-Based Costing (ABC) was applied, then the data source number and data amount were defined as the time cost driver, which were used to allocate and calculate the time cost of activity, and the time cost of activity information preparing was defined as the index to identify the integration point and determine its priority. To intuitively represent the time cost of activity, the time value chain model was applied to construct the time cost model of activity. The presented method could identify the integration point and its priority quantitatively, and was proved to be effective.

Abstract:This paper mainly discusses a business process assignment optimization model and optimization strategy under the conditions of time, cost and resource constraints in a multi-project environment. Business processes can be classified into operational, supportive and managerial processes with complex semantic relationships including sequential, concurrent activities and AND, OR, exclusive OR logic junctions. The structural and formal description of business processes is introduced using IDEF3 and an extended AON (activity on node) graph. The analytic model of business process assignment optimization is developed for the resource allocation and activity arrangement optimization at the minimal cost. The genetic algorithm is utilized as a main algorithmic framework for the optimization problem that incorporates the stack technique and unified time window to deal with resource conflicts and decision nodes.

Abstract:Workflow management is an important technology of business process management that links tasks and qualified resources as a bridge. Researches have been carried out to improve the resource allocation of workflow that is often performed manually and empirically either by mining resource allocation rules or by optimizing the resource allocation for tasks to achieve certain goals such as minimal cost or duration. None of these approaches can guarantee to give the suitable solution to resource allocators because of the dynamic natures of business process executions. In this paper we propose an approach, BNRR (Bayesian Network-based Resource Recommendation), to recommend the most proficient sets of resources for a business process based on event logs, which gives the allocators chances to find the most suitable solution. Our approach considers both the information about the resource dependency and the information about the resource capability. The approach can be applied to recommend resources either for a whole workflow or for an individual task. The approach is validated by experiments on real life data.

Abstract:In software service provision, the overall performance of a composite service is often the ultimate focus of concern rather than those of its individual components. This opens new opportunities for resource allocation because with its service workflow definition, more accurate prediction of its individual components' dynamic workload is possible, thus resulting in better utilization of resources. In this paper, we propose to improve resource allocation through tracing and prediction of workload dynamics of component services as requests traverse and pipeline through the workflow. Factors affecting service workload such as service time, transition probability, replication overhead for additional service etc. as well as the uncertainty in request arrival time are all taken into consideration in our model. The goal is to maximize the number of requests completed under the constraints of limited available resources. Experimental study on TPC-W and synthetic workflow shows that our dynamic workflow-based resource allocation scheme is much more efficient in enhancing the overall performance of composite services than current resource allocation schemes do.

Abstract:Workshop producing systems can be described by different types of models. As some systems are too sophisticated for mathematical model or petri-net model to use, a multi-process workflow model for workshop scheduling and optimization is proposed. In this way, the workshop producing process can be modeled and simulated in workflow simulation systems and important running statistics including waiting time or queue length can be obtained. Based on basic Particle Swarm Optimization (P.S.O) algorithm, a new scheduling algorithm taking advantage of the average waiting time of activities is developed and applied to a real world scenario. The results of basic P.S.O algorithm and the new algorithm are analyzed and compared, while the new algorithm is found to be more efficient than the basic one.

Abstract:Real-world business processes are resource-intensive. In work environments human resources usually multitask, both human and non-human resources are typically shared between tasks, and multiple resources are sometimes necessary to undertake a single task. However, current Business Process Management Systems focus on task-resource allocation in terms of individual human resources only and lack support for a full spectrum of resource classes (e.g., human or non-human, application or non-application, individual or teamwork, schedulable or unschedulable) that could contribute to tasks within a business process. In this paper we develop a conceptual data model of resources that takes into account the various resource classes and their interactions. The resulting conceptual resource model is validated using a real-life healthcare scenario.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to judge whether a business process is successful or not. A business process is deemed successful if a large enough proportion of instances dwell in a workflow (wait and be executed) for less than given period. By analyzing instances' dwelling time distribution in a workflow, the proportion of instances which dwell in the workflow for less than any given period will be achieved. The performance analysis of workflow model plays an important role in the research of workflow techniques and efficient implementation of workflow management. It includes the analysis of instances' dwelling time distribution in a workflow process. Multidimensional workflow net (MWF-net) includes multiple timing workflow nets (TWF-nets) and the organization and resource information. The processes of transaction instances form a queuing model in which the transaction instances act as customers and the resources act as servers. The key contribution of this paper is twofold. First, this paper presents a theoretical method to calculate the instances' dwelling time probability density in a workflow where the activities are structured and predictable. Second, by this method the analysis of instances' dwelling time distribution and satisfactory degree based on dwelling time can be achieved. The service time of an instance is specified by the firing delay of the corresponding transition (executing time of the corresponding activity). It is assumed that the service request (processing of a transaction instance) arrives with exponentially distributed inter-arrival times and the firing delay of a transition (executing time of the corresponding activity) follows exponential distribution. Then, the instances' dwelling time probability density analysis in each activity and each control structure of a workflow model is performed. According to the above results a method is proposed for computing the instances' dwelling time probability density in a workflow model. Finally an example is used to show that the proposed method can be effectively utilized in practice.
