Abstract:We have developed an effective route for obtaining 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with a yield of 92.6 mol% from the dehydration of fructose in N,N-dimethylformamide using a mixture of AlCl3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 as catalyst. Abstract:In this study, 1,4-dioxane and tetrahydrofuran are found to be the most suitable solvents for the dehydration of fructose at high concentrations, in which 77.7% and 78.8% yields of 5-hydromethylfurfural (5-HMF) are obtained, respectively, from 20 wt% fructose in the presence of an acid catalyst (5 mol% HCl, 11 wt% water). The high proportion of fructofuranose formed in those polar aprotic solvents and the reversible dimerization to the protective difructose dianhydrides determined by C-13 NMR and HPLC-MS, which stop fructose from excess cross-polymerization into unwanted humins, are considered to be the key factors for the satisfactory 5-HMF yield. Further addition of strong electrophilic molecules such as 5 mol% maleic acid, which consumes 2,5-dioxo-6-hydroxy-hexanal and blocks its reaction with 5-HMF by Michael addition, enhances the yield of 5-HMF to 85.4%.

Abstract:Preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from fructose is a typical liquid-phase biomass conver-sion reaction, strongly affected by solvent media and acid catalysts, including fructose reactivity and HMF selectivity. Most works on solvent selection were conducted experimentally, however, lack of the-oretical guidance. Herein, we applied experimental and theoretical techniques to investigate solvent effects of acetone-water solvent on HMF production. Factors including product distribution, key interme-diate and byproduct identification, reaction pathways, and solvation simulation of solutes were system-atically evaluated. The results indicate that water ensures high substrate concentration and assists intermolecular hydrogen transfer to accelerate reaction rate. Various HMF degradation reactions are introduced in the presence of water, however, are significantly inhibited by acetone. Moreover, acetone increases the population of high-reactive fructofuranose isomers, thus improving HMF yield. Therefore, water and acetone play a synergistic role in HMF preparation. Also, our findings provide theoretical insights for solvent selection and methodology for studying solvent effects. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a high-valuebiomass-derived platform chemical derived from renewablebiomass, which is a great alternative to petroleum-based chemicals;however, it cannot be produced on a large scale at present becauseof the limitation of a low HMF yield and costly production. In thiswork, an experimental study of one-pot production of HMF fromglucose in an acetone-water solvent was conducted. The effects ofinorganic salts (in specific, NaCl) on miscible solvents were studiedbecause inorganic salts could affect the phase structure of solvents.We also study the influence of the ratio between Lewis acid andBronsted acid (L/B) on the dehydration reaction. After parameteroptimization experiments, up to 64.5% HMF yield was obtained at the condition ofC0= 1.25 w/v %,CAlCl3= 1.25 w/v %,CHCl=10mmolmiddotL-1,T= 160 degrees C, ando/a= 80/20, and the optimized L/B was 1.25 kgmiddotmol-1. Finally, an economic and efficient HMFproduction process including HMF purification and catalyst recycling was proposed; the HMF product could be produced andseparated with high recovery (similar to 88%) and purity (similar to 85%) in the process. Ourfindings and analysis would provide support for thechoice of the reaction system and bifunctional catalyst synthesis in the subsequent industrial demonstration development

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:Biomass conversion offers an efficient approach to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. Electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has attracted tremendous attention in the latest few years for the mild synthesis conditions and high conversion efficiency to obtain 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA), but there still remain problems such as limited yield, short cycle life, and ambiguous reaction mechanism. Despite many reviews highlighting a variety of electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxidation of HMF, a detailed discussion of the structural modulation of catalyst and the underlying catalytic mechanism is still lacking. We herein provide a comprehensive summary of the recent development of electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA, particularly focusing on the mechanism studies as well as the advanced strategies developed to regulate the structure and optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts, including heterointerface construction, defect engineering, single-atom engineering, and in situ reconstruction. Experimental characterization techniques and theoretical calculation methods for mechanism and active site studies are elaborated, and challenges and future directions of electrochemical oxidation of HMF are also prospected. This review will provide guidance for designing advanced catalysts and deepening the understanding of the reaction mechanism beneath electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based solid acid, which was prepared by a facile and eco-friendly approach from glucose and p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH), was used to catalyze fructose dehydration into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for the first time and exhibits excellent catalytic performance. As high as 91.2% yield of HMF was achieved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 130 degrees C after only 1.5 h. Besides, this catalyst also displayed a good reusability.

Abstract:The development of highly-efficient catalysts for conversion of glucose and fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great importance. In this work, theoretical simulations form the basis for rational design and synthesis of a superhydrophobic mesoporous acid, that can completely prevent HMF hydration, giving HMF as sole product from full conversion of fructose. Interestingly, the combined superhydrophobic solid acid and superhydrophilic solid base catalysts are very efficient for one-pot conversion of glucose to HMF, giving a yield as high as 95.4 %. The excellent catalytic data in the conversion of glucose to HMF is attributed to the unique wettabilities of the solid acid and base catalysts.

Abstract:It is of great significance to develop an affordable and environmentally friendly method for producing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural from inexpensive and abundant agricultural waste. Herein, FePO4 combined with organic acids such as mandelic acid were used as catalysts in a one-pot catalytic conversion of untreated wheat straw into HMF and furfural in a two-phase system of THF/H2O saturated by NaCl. H+, Fe(OH)2+, and Fe(OH)2 + originated from partially dissolved FePO4 in hot water together with organic acids provided Brønsted and Lewis acid sites for the cascade conversion of wheat straw. Whereas organic acid could regulate the concentrations of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites to promote the dehydration process of fructose and hinder the production of by-products and humins, boosting the yield of HMF and furfural. The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the reaction conditions. The highest yield of HMF was 62.9% at 200 °C and 120 min, which is higher than the reported yield of HMF using lignocellulose as raw material in the current literature. Furfural has also achieved a higher yield (93.9%) at 180 °C and 90 min. This study demonstrates the rationality of the deployment of lignocellulose to produce furan compounds by organic acids and FePO4, providing the possibility for efficient production of HMF and furfural from recalcitrant agricultural waste.

Abstract:A novel sulfonated carbonaceous material was prepared through carbonization and sulfonation of a melamine formaldehyde resin, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), BET, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis and acidity measurement. The prepared sulfonated carbonaceous material was used to catalyze fructose dehydration to prepare 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and the effects of solvents, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time and fructose concentration on 5-HMF yield were investigated. The results show that 5-HMF yield of 79.8%could be obtained in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) under the following optimum reaction conditions:the catalyst dosage is 5% of fructose input, reaction temperature 180℃, reaction time 30 min and fructose concentration 0.025 g×mL-1. 5-HMF yield only decreased 7.1% after the catalyst was reused for five times, which indicates good reusability of the catalyst.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the promising chemicals, which can serve as a platform chemical to produce various energy chemicals. HMF can be produced from different lignocellulosic biomass derived sugars employing different catalytic processes. In this study, the synthesis of HMF was investigated from excessively available sucrose using environment friendly and cost-effective technology. Among the various solvents applied, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was found as an efficient organic solvent medium. The results elucidated the combination of p-toluenesulfonic acid (pTSA) and chromium chloride (CrCl3.6H2O) as the best dehydrating catalyst. A relatively higher HMF yield of 55% was achieved at a lower temperature (120 ℃) while at 150 ℃ (higher temperature) oxalic acid with higher concentration of CrCl3.6H2O gave a maximum yield of 59.21%. The time, temperature, and concentrations affected the yields. The positive impact was found with a rise in temperature from 100 to 120 ℃ in pTSA while oxalic acid affected the yield until 150 ℃. HMF yields were reported in descending order as pTSA > oxalic acid > maleic acid > malonic acid > succinic acid > blank at 120 ℃. It was observed that the isomerization of glucose to fructose is the major barrier to achieve the high process yield. Therefore, more efforts should be made to achieve the high rate of isomerization of glucose (part of sucrose disaccharide) in order to improve the HMF selectivity by depressing the humin formation.

Abstract:Conversion of biomass-derived sources into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a value-added platform chemical, has attracted great research interest motivated by the raising economic and environmental incentives. This review assesses the recent advance on the catalytic system of HMF production, with a main focus on the function of emerging catalysts, solvent system, and advanced reactor. A general overview of HMF production, the correlation between the catalyst physicochemical properties, with a special attention on the acidity property, and the catalytic activity under various reaction parameters, such as solvent or reactor have been summarized and compared. Besides, the reaction mechanism of HMF synthesis was discussed in details, which is helpful for designing novel catalyst with better catalytic activity and improving the stability. Research efforts to clarify the interactions among co-catalysts/co-solvents and between catalysts and solvents have been also classified. Future efforts on developing a synergistic catalytic system for biomass valorization has been pointed out.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furfurylamine (5-HMFA) as an important 5-HMF derivative has been widely utilized in the manufacture of diuretics, antihypertensive drugs, preservatives and curing agents. In this work, an efficient chemoenzymatic route was constructed for producing 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfurylamine (5-HMFA) from biobased D-fructose in deep eutectic solvent Betaine:Glycerol–water. The introduction of Betaine:Glycerol could greatly promote the dehydration of D-fructose to 5-HMF and inhibit the secondary decomposition reactions of 5-HMF, compared with a single aqueous phase. D-Fructose (200 mM) could be catalyzed to 5-HMF (183.4 mM) at 91.7% yield by SG(SiO2) (3 wt%) after 90 min in Betaine:Glycerol (20 wt%), and at 150 °C. E. coli AT exhibited excellent bio-transamination activity to aminate 5-HMF into 5-HMFA at 35 °C and pH 7.5. After 24 h, D-fructose-derived 5-HMF (165.4 mM) was converted to 5-HMFA (155.7 mM) in 94.1% yield with D-Ala (D-Ala-to-5-HMF molar ratio 15:1) in Betaine:Glycerol (20 wt%) without removal of SG(SiO2), achieving a productivity of 0.61 g 5-HMFA/(g substrate D-fructose). Chemoenzymatic valorization of D-fructose with SG(SiO2) and E. coli AT was established for sustainable production of 5-HMFA, which has potential application.

Abstract:The development of safe, economical and highly efficient oxidation systems for the production of chemicals from biomass remains a significant and challenging target. Here, we firstly find a unique air-assisted reaction mechanism for the non-pressurized oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as O-donor over CoZrNC-MCM, which affords an exceptional productivity among all non-noble catalysts. The combination of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that the air-assisted DMSO-oxidation pathway is activated by the co-adsorption of DMSO and O2 on Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs of CoNC-MCM. ZrNC species on CoZrNC-MCM will be thermally disintegrated to release ZrO2+ and provide the corresponding cation vacancies that might be able to capture Co atoms to form additional Co-(pyrrolic N-C) active pairs, resulting in the increase of catalytiv activity. The released ZrO2+ is well dispersed over Al-MCM-41 in the form of zirconia, which contributes to the dehydration of fructose to HMF. In this way an one-step approach to synthesizing DFF from fructose is achieved by the cooperation of zirconia and Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs over CoZrNC-MCM.

Abstract:A two-step process combining the (equilibrium) glucose isomerization to fructose with selective dehydration of fructose in the obtained sugar mixture to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), where glucose is largely unconverted and recycled, represents an attractive concept to increase the overall efficiency for HMF synthesis. This work presents experimental and modelling studies on the conversion of such fructose-glucose mixture to HMF using the sulfuric acid catalyst in a water-methyl isobutyl ketone biphasic system under a wide range of conditions (e.g., temperature, catalyst and sugar concentrations). Through detailed product analyses and ESI-MS spectroscopy, the excess formation of formic acid (together with humins) by the direct sugar/HMF degradation was confirmed and included in the reaction network (neglected in most literatures). The kinetic modelling based on batch experiments in monophasic water well describes the measurements thereof, whereas distinct deviations were found in the prediction of typical literature kinetic models. The incorporation of HMF equilibrium extraction into the developed kinetic model, with consideration of phase volume change as a function of temperature and partial phase miscibility, enables to predict reaction results in the biphasic system in batch. This kinetic model allows to optimize conditions for HMF synthesis that are favored in continuous reactors with minimized back mixing. Based on the model implications, the biphasic system was optimized with slug flow microreactors to better address process intensification and scale-up aspects. Using a simulated fructose-glucose mixture feedstock to represent commercially available high fructose corn syrups, a maximum HMF yield of 81% was obtained at 155 °C over 0.05 M H2SO4 at a residence time of 16 min in the microreactor, with 96% fructose conversion and over 95% of glucose remaining unconverted.
