Abstract:Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, all-fiber Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer that is formed by a simple angled fiber that can function as a beam splitter. According to the principle of the angled fiber, we verify the influence of an oblique angle on the light propagation path and light intensity ratio. Subsequently, angled fiber-based FP interferometers are experimentally demonstrated, and the influence of the oblique angle on the visibility of interference fringes and temperature characteristics is investigated. Finally, the temperature characteristics of this proposed FP interferometer are investigated experimentally, and the temperature sensitivity is 12.62 and 10.89 pm/°C for 42° and 40° angled fiber-based fiber FP interferometers, respectively. This proposed FP interferometer is fabricated by using a simple angled fiber, which has the advantages of ease of fabrication and all-fiber characteristics and hence can meet the requirements of mass production and high stability in various practical application areas.

Abstract:It is found that when a light beam is incident obliquely on a thin film Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) from different incident media (air or substrate), the reflective beam will be shifted in both the forward and the backward directions. Based on this inverted spatial dispersion effect, two thin film FPFs with different directional lateral shifts are assembled to get a thin film superprism with a wider dispersion band. The thin film samples are fabricated as well as tested, and the results are in approximate agreement with numerical simulation. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Optical sensors, such as fiber interferometers transmit along light paths and perform measurements based on optical path difference. These types of sensors can reduce device volume and improve sensing performance using optical multiplexing. A beam splitter for optical path multiplexing in an optical fiber ring is proposed. A photonic crystal was used to design the beam splitter. By optimizing and improving the photonic crystal microstructure, the beam splitting function can be realized while taking into account the cycling capability. Therefore, the light can recirculate multiple times in the fiber ring to realize light path multiplexing. The finite difference time domain method is used to analyze and evaluate the performance of the beam splitter.

Abstract:A thin-film Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) was designed and fabricated to achieve the superprism effect. A polychromatic light, tuned at various incident angles onto the device, was used to attain more demultiplexing channels. This indicates that the FPF, which can be fabricated simply and inexpensively, can be used as a tunable demultiplexing device. Further, the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the Gaussian angular spectrum method were introduced to calculate a more-accurate spatial shift at different wavelengths and to analyze the beam-splitting phenomena in the FPF. Abstract:We demonstrate a novel fiber tip Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer with a chirped spectral characteristic. The FP interferometer is formed by an etched chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the fiber tip broadband end-face mirror, and the etched chirped FBG is prepared by a dynamic chemical etching process, shaping the taper and reducing the size from 125 μm to just a few micrometers. Due to the spectral characteristic of the etched chirped FBG, the different resonance wavelengths correspond to different gating positions which give rise to the gradient cavity length in the chirped fiber tip FP interferometer; thus, this FP interferometer possesses a chirped interference spectrum. Subsequently, the FP interferometer is fabricated, and the temperature response is investigated by measuring the wavelength shift of the resonance dips in the reflection spectrum. Significantly, because of its special interference principle and configuration, we experimentally demonstrate that this FP interferometer can be used for the spatial localization of the external temperature perturbations.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical elements into ultrathin devices. In this study, a nanoscale tunable beam splitter utilizing a bilayer of geometric metasurfaces in the visible spectrum is proposed and numerically examined. Inspired by the diffractive Alvarez lens and multilayer geometric metasurfaces, opposite quadratic phase distributions are imparted on both layers, and a varying linear phase gradient will arise through relatively lateral displacement between two layers, generating tunable angles of deflection. In addition, such geometric metasurfaces offer opposite directions of phase gradients for orthogonal circularly polarized incidences, leading to effective polarization beam splitting. Results prove that the splitting angles can be tuned precisely, and the energy split ratio can be effectively changed according to the ellipticity of the polarized incidence. This design could find significant applications in optical communication, measurement, display, and so on.

Abstract:The integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometers structure based on four core fiber (FCF) and a helical phase-modulation microdisk (HPMD) structure is proposed. The HPMD is designed to generate π/2 phase difference between adjacent fiber cores at the end face of the FCF. Four extrinsic FP cavities are formed by the HPMD and another reflected mirror perpendicular to the fiber. The quadrature phase demodulation theory is derived and the FP cavities length can be directly calculated by the reflected intensity of the FCF. The crosstalk effect between the four cores is analyzed. In addition, the simulation results also show that the structure has strong anti-interference ability to temperature fluctuations, the sensitivity of phase difference and temperature is only 0.009 °/K. The results of phase demodulation show that the demodulation effect is better when the thickness of the phase disk is 765 nm, and the mean relative error is 0.58%. The influence of machining error of FCF on demodulation results is also analyzed. The phase demodulation relative error is 0.65% when the alignment mismatch is reach 100 μm.

Abstract:We investigate the beam splitting phenomena under the case that light is incident obliquely on thin film Fabry-Perot filter and the dispersion diagram of Fabry-Perot filter is shown; Gaussian beam propagating in the structure is analyzed by Fourier decomposition in angular field, transmitted band is calculated by characteristic matrix arithmetic in optical thin film theory. At last, the thin film Fabry-Perot filter device was fabricated by e-beam deposition in vacuum and measured from 782 nm to 787 nm achieved by the tunable Ti-sapphire laser. We show the variation of the distance between the splitting spots at different wavelengths by the image of splitting beams we detected, demonstrating the distance achieve maximum at the peak transmittance wavelength because of the largest group delay. And the experimental result is in good agreement with our interpretation.

Abstract:We proposed a fiber taper based on the Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer structure with controllable temperature sensitivity. The FP interferometer is formed by inserting a segment of tapered fiber tip into the capillary and subsequently splicing the other end of the capillary to a single-mode fiber (SMF), the tapered fiber endface, and the spliced face form the FP cavity. Through controlling the inserted tapered fiber length, a series of FP interferometers were made. Because the inserted taper tip has the degree of freedom along the fiber axial, when the FP interferometer is subjected to temperature variation, the thermal expansion of the fiber taper tip will resist the FP cavity length change caused by the evolution of capillary length, and we can control the temperature sensitivity by adjusting the inserted taper length. In this structure, the equivalent thermal expansion coefficient of the FP interferometer can be defined; it was used to evaluate the temperature sensitivity of the FP interferometer, which provides an effective method to eliminate the temperature effect and to enhance other measurement accuracy. We fabricated the FP interferometers and calibrated their temperature characters by measuring the wavelength shift of the resonance dips in the reflection spectrum. In a temperature range of 50 degrees C to 150 degrees C, the corresponding temperature sensitivities can be controlled between 0 and 1.97 pm/degrees C when the inserted taper is between 75 and 160 mu m. Because of its controllable temperature sensitivity, ease of fabrication, and low cost, this FP interferometer can meet different temperature sensitivity requirements in various application areas, especially in the fields which need temperature insensitivity. Abstract:In this paper we investigate the variation of free spectral range (FSR) for the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) consisting of mirrors with phase shift dispersion. The reflection phase shift on a mirror has been calculated employing the Transfer-Matrix Method and the values of FSR have been calculated under the condition of normal incidence of light beam. Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities have been fabricated employing bulk micromachining technology, and silicon wafers coated with multiplayer dielectric films were used as mirrors. FSR of these FP cavities have been experimentally measured. The experimental data match the calculated results very well. The conclusion is that FSR shortening effect must be taken into account for the FPIs with a small plate gap, as the finesse and the tunable range of tunable FPI can be affected by the shortening effect greatly.

Abstract:We propose and theoretically demonstrate an integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an anisotropy-engineered multi-section phase shifter. The phase shift can be simultaneously controlled for the TE and TM polarizations by engineering the length and direction of the anisotropic LNOI waveguide. For TE polarization, the phase shift is -π/2, while for TM polarization, the phase shift is π/2. Thus, the incident TE and TM modes can be coupled into different output ports. The simulation results show an ultra-high polarization extinction ratio of ∼47.7 dB, a low excess loss of ∼0.9 dB and an ultra-broad working bandwidth of ∼200 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first integrated polarization beam splitter on the x-cut LNOI platform.

Abstract:Using strong couplings of different Fabry-Perot (FP) resonators in metal-insulator-metal waveguides, a compact plasmonic wavelength demultiplexer is numerically demonstrated with high wavelength resolution. In the demultiplexer, it is found that new right-angle resonators emerge with bandwidth narrower than that of the isolated FP resonators. These narrowband right-angle resonators interfere with the broadband FP resonators, resulting in Fano-line shapes in the transmission spectra. Consequently, these sharp and asymmetric Fano-line shapes considerably increase the resolution of wavelength demultiplexing, which is significantly narrower than the full width of the isolated FP resonator.

Abstract:We propose novel polarization splitters based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), in which the cores of the splitters are nearly nonbirefringent. Different from conventional fiber-based polarization splitters, the birefringence in the new splitters results mainly from narrow silica regions physically connecting the two cores. This means that polarization splitting can be achieved without employing highly birefringent cores, which provides a possibility to greatly simplify the structures of the PCF-based polarization splitters and make them more practical. A 5-mm-long splitter with an extinction ratio of 20 dB has been obtained. We also discuss how the silica regions influence coupling characteristics of the dual-core PCFs and present a design guidance for the polarization splitters based on polarization-dependent coupling.

Abstract:A fiber heterodyne self-mixing interferometer with orthogonally polarized light compensation is achieved. This system can adapt to various complex scenes while still keeping ultra-high sensitivity and anti-disturbance capability. Ultra-high sensitivity microchip laser is used as the laser source and polarization maintaining(PM) fiber makes the light path easy to accommodate to complex spaces, such as remote or narrow and small space. Besides, orthogonally polarized light inside PM fiber can eliminate the measurement error on account of environment disturbance. At present, the displacement resolution could be less than 10nm, which shows a great potential in nano-metrology. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a passive quadrature demodulation method using polarized light and a fiber-optic sensor with a birefringent low-finesse Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity. With precisely controlled birefringence in the FP cavity, the fringes probed by light polarized along the two principal axes can have a quadrature phase shift and can be separately detected. We demonstrated the concept for ultrasound detection using a sensor with an FP cavity formed by two low-reflectivity chirped fiber Bragg gratings on a coiled polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber. By controlling the bending radius, bending length, and twist of the coil structure, we obtained an optimized total phase delay of 109° between the fringes of the two polarizations along the principal axes of the PM fiber. Using a linearly polarized laser source and a polarization beam splitter, the signals at the two polarizations were separated and measured by two photodetectors. The experimental results show that the sensor can detect ultrasonic signal when the sensor spectra experience environmental drifts using a laser at a fixed wavelength.

Abstract:We proposed a silver-coated 45 radiated tilted fiber grating (45 RTFG) based interferometer, in which the 45 RTFG is working as a beam splitter and a coupler, and the light transmitting in the fiber core is radiated out and resonant in the cladding radial cavity formed by the fully coated silver film, which forms multiple beam interference. We have theoretically and experimentally investigated the proposed fiber interferometer in terms of polarization-dependent transmission spectra, the free spectral range (FSR), spectral visibility and sensing characteristics. Due to the single polarization radiation feature of 45 RTFG, only S-polarized light could form the multiple beam interference and P-polarized light would pass through the grating with low loss. And the FSR of the proposed fiber interferometer is around 6.8 nm, which is determined by the 125 m cladding diameter. The theoretical results show that the spectral visibility of interference is proportional to the coupling efficient of 45 RTFG and when the coupling efficient reaches 0.92, the spectral visibility is the maximum. In the experiment, the fiber interferometer formed by the 45 RTFG with 11 dB polarization extinction ratio has the spectral visibility of 26 dB. Moreover, we have also investigated the temperature, strain and twist characteristics of the proposed interferometer. The experimental results show that the transmission peak has a red shift with increasing temperature, with a sensitivity of 10 0.1 pmC; The strain causes a blue shift for the transmission peak with 0.42 0.01 pm sensitivity, and the twist sensitivity reaches 22.408 0.2 dBrad. The proposed silver-coated 45 RTFG based interferometer has an in-fiber and compact structure, which can be potentially used for optical fiber sensing.

A new method was raised by analyzing the cavity field character and the length of cavity was measured by several simple experimental steps. The difference voltage on FP cavity was measured corresponding to the ratio of intervals of transverse and longitudinal modes. It can be calculated by the formula derived in the paper.
