Abstract:A hydrolyzate prepared from ferric nitrate solutions at 80°C. affords sufficient X-ray and electron diffraction effects that, taken in conjunction with density determinations, infrared absorption character, published magnetic susceptibility data, and differential thermal analysis, a crystal structure model may be deduced which is compatible with the several properties. The model is related to hematite, but has an a-axis of 5.08 A and a c-axis of 9.4 A. The cell content is near Fe5HO8·4H2O.The hydrated ferric oxide recoverable from ferritin exhibits substantially the same diffraction diagram, but somewhat more diffuse, and approaches the precipitated product in each of the supplemental analyses.
