Abstract:Severe abnormal transverse vibrations of rotor systems which are induced by the lubrication oil leaked inside the rotating drum have been observed in practical aero-engine compressors. The nonsynchronous vibrations of such a rotor system are investigated based on a simplified model theoretically and described experimentally in this paper. Firstly, a lumped dynamic model of a rotor system with an oil-block inside the rotating drum, where the oil-block moves along the inner wall of the drum, is established. In this model, the interaction between the oil-block and the drum only includes the normal and tangential (frictional) forces under the assumption of contacting friction, and the oil-block motivation is described with the help of both its Coriolis acceleration and transferable rotational acceleration. Based on the proposed model, nonsynchronous vibrations of the rotor system are simulated numerically, and the influences of the rotating speed and mass of the oil-block are also investigated. The numerical results show that, once the rotating speed exceeds the first critical speed of the rotor system, nonsynchronous whirl and whip phenomena will appear, i.e. the movement of the oil-block becomes slower than that of the drum. It is found that the nonsynchronous amplitudes and frequencies are sensitive to the rotating speed of the rotor system and the oil-block mass. The numerical results are also qualitatively consistent with those of experimental and on-site tests.
