Abstract:In this work, the sign distribution for all inverse elements of general tridiagonal H-matrices is presented. In addition, some computable upper and lower bounds for the entries of the inverses of diagonally dominant tridiagonal matrices are obtained. Based on the sign distribution, these bounds greatly improve some well-known results due to Ostrowski (1952) 23, Shivakumar and Ji (1996) 26, Nabben (1999) [21], [22] and recently given by Peluso and Politi (2001) 24, Peluso and Popolizio (2008) 25 and so forth. It is also stated that the inverse of a general tridiagonal matrix may be described by 2n-2 parameters ({θk}k=2n and {φk}k=1n-1) instead of 2n+2 ones as given by El-Mikkawy (2004) 3, El-Mikkawy and Karawia (2006) 4 and Huang and McColl (1997) 10. According to these results, a new symbolic algorithm for finding the inverse of a tridiagonal matrix without imposing any restrictive conditions is presented, which improves some recent results. Finally, several applications to the preconditioning technology, the numerical solution of differential equations and the birth–death processes together with numerical tests are given.

Abstract:In this paper,the inverse of a tridiagonal matrix is investigated.By the LU and UL decompositions of a tridiagonal matrix and the special structure of the inverse matrix,an algorithm for inverting a tridiaognal matrix and the explicit expression of the elements of the inverse matrix are presented.The computing complexity and the computing time of this algorithm is lower than those of some existed algorithms for inverting a block tridiaognal matrix.

Abstract:Firstly, the twisted block decompositions of the block tridiagonal matrices are presented. According to the special structure of the decomposition, the formulae of computing the block elements of each column of the inverse matrices are obtained. Then an algorithm of inverting the block tridiagonal matrices has been established. The explicit expressions of the block elements of the inverse matrices are also presented. At last, for the algorithm in this paper and some existed algorithms for the inverse matrices, the calculating complexity and the calculating time have been compared.

Abstract:An algorithm for the inverse of a general tridiagonal matrix is presented. For a tridiagonal matrix having the Doolittle factorization, an inversion algorithm is established. The algorithm is then generalized to deal with a general tridiagonal matrix without any restriction. Comparison with other methods is provided, indicating low computational complexity of the proposed algorithm, and its applicability to general tridiagonal matrices.

Abstract:This study investigates tridiagonal near-Toeplitz matrices in which the Toeplitz part is strictly diagonally dominant. The focus is on determining the exact inverse of these matrices and establishing upper bounds for the infinite norms of the inverse matrices. For cases with $b > 2$ and $b < -2$, we derive the compact form of the entries of the exact inverse. These results remain valid even when the matrices' corners are not diagonally dominant, specifically when $|\widetilde{b}| < 1$. Furthermore, we calculate the traces and row sums of the inverse matrices. Afterwards, we present upper bound theorems for the infinite norms of the inverse matrices. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the bounds and their application, we provide numerical results for solving Fisher's problem. Our findings reveal that the converging rates of fixed-point iterations closely align with the expected rates, and there is minimal disparity between the upper bounds and infinite norm of the inverse matrix. Specifically, this observation holds true when $b > 2$ with $\widetilde{b} \leq 1$ and $b < -2$ with $\widetilde{b} \geq -1$. For other cases, there is potential for further improvement in the obtained upper bounds. This study contributes to the field of numerical analysis of fixed-point iterations by improving the convergence rate of iterations and reducing the computing time of the inverse matrices.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide explicit formulas for the exact inverses of the symmetric tridiagonal near-Toeplitz matrices characterized by weak diagonal dominance in the Toeplitz part. Furthermore, these findings extend to scenarios where the corners of the near Toeplitz matrices lack diagonal dominance ($|\widetilde{b}| < 1$). Additionally, we compute the row sums and traces of the inverse matrices, thereby deriving upper bounds for their infinite norms. To demonstrate the practical applicability of our theoretical results, we present numerical examples addressing numerical solution of the Fisher problem using the fixed point method. Our findings reveal that the convergence rates of fixed-point iterations closely align with the expected rates, and there is minimal disparity between the upper bounds and the infinite norm of the inverse matrix. Specifically, this observation holds true for $|b| = 2$ with $|\widetilde{b}| \geq 1$. In other cases, there exists potential to enhance the obtained upper bounds.

Abstract:A novel factorization for the sum of two single-pair matrices is established as product of lower-triangular, tridiagonal, and upper-triangular matrices, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for tridiagonal matrix inversion. Subsequent factorizations are established, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for the inverse sum of two single-pair matrices. An application to derive the symbolic inverse of a particular Gram matrix is presented, and the numerical stability of the formulas is studied.

Abstract:A well-known property of an M-matrix M is that the inverse is element-wise non-negative, which we write as M-1⩾0. In this paper, we consider element-wise perturbations of non-symmetric tridiagonal M-matrices and obtain sufficient bounds on the perturbations so that the non-negative inverse persists. These bounds improve the bounds recently given by Kennedy and Haynes [Inverse positivity of perturbed tridiagonal M-matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 430 (2009) 2312–2323]. In particular, when perturbing the second diagonals (elements (l,l+2) and (l,l-2)) of M, these sufficient bounds are shown to be the actual maximum allowable perturbations. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our estimates.

Abstract:Given a block triangular matrix $M$ over a noncommutative ring with invertible diagonal blocks, this work gives two new representations of its inverse $M^{-1}$. Each block element of $M^{-1}$ is explicitly expressed via a quasideterminant of a submatrix of $M$ with the block Hessenberg type. Accordingly another representation for each inverse block is attained, which is in terms of recurrence relationship with multiple terms among blocks of $M^{-1}$. The latter result allows us to perform an off-diagonal rectangular perturbation analysis for the inverse calculation of $M$. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our results.

Abstract:We study the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices based on the analysis of the block cyclic displacement. New formulas for the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices are proposed. We show that the inverses of block Toeplitz matrices can be decomposed as a sum of products of block circulant matrices. In the scalar case, the inverse formulas are proved to be numerically forward stable, if the Toeplitz matrix is nonsingular and well conditioned.
