Abstract:In this paper, we consider the quadratic inverse eigenvalue problem (QIEP) of constructing real symmetric matrices M, C, and K of size n x it, with (M, C, K) 0 0, so that the quadratic matrix polynomial Q(lambda) = lambda M-2 + lambda X + K has in (n < m <= 2n) prescribed eigenpairs. It is shown that, for almost all prescribed eigenpairs, the QIEP has a solution with M nonsingular if m < m(*), and has only solutions with (Q(lambda)) equivalent to 0 otherwise, where m(*) = n + (1 + root 1 +8 n)/2. We also derive the expression of the general solution of the QIEP for both cases. Further-more, we develop an algorithm for finding a particular solution to the QIEP with M positive definite if it exists. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:(R,S)-(skew) symmetric matrices have numerous applications in civil engineering, information theory, numerical analysis, etc. In this paper, we deal with the (R,S)-(skew) symmetric solutions to the quaternion matrix equation AXB=C. We use a real representation Aτ to obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for AXB=C to have (R,S)-(skew) symmetric solutions and derive the solutions when it is consistent. We also derive the least-squares (R,S)-(skew) symmetric solution to the above matrix equation.

Abstract:This article concerns computing the largest (or smallest) eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector of a large irreducible symmetric tridiagonal matrix. We divide the original extreme eigenpair problem into p subproblems when the matrix is partitioned in p-block form. An inverse extreme eigenpair problem associated with the divide method is considered: Find a (p - 1)-dimensional vector a such that the largest eigenvalue lambda of a given symmetric tridiagonal matrix T is the common largest eigenvalues of p small matrices T-i(a) which are updated matrices of the diagonal blocks T-i of T with rank-one/two corrections. We prove that the inverse problem is solvable and has a unique positive solution and that the corresponding eigenvector of T-i(a) with the positive solution a forms a section of the eigenvector of T corresponding to its largest eigenvalue. An algorithm is proposed for solving the inverse problem iteratively, on which a system of nonlinear equations should be solved for each of its iterative steps. It is proved that the iterative scheme converges for any positive initial vector and that its convergence is asymptotically quadratic. The new method can be used to compute the extreme eigenpairs of T and is well suited for parallel implementation. Some numerical tests were performed, which show the efficiency of the new parallelizable algorithm.

Abstract:For a given matrix , let the set and let , that is, is the set of all anti-symmetric matrices on . In this paper, we first consider the following problem (Problem 1): Given , find such that . Then, we consider the associated optimal approximation problem: Given , find such that , where is the Frobenius norm and is the solution set of Problem 1. By using the generalized singular value decomposition of a matrix pair, we deduce the solvability condition and the representation of the general solution of Problem 1. Moreover, we obtain the unique approximation solution of the optimal approximation problem. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the correctness of our result.

Abstract:Necessary and sufficient conditions are completely characterized for the existence of a positive definite or positive semidefinite solution to the symmetric recursive inverse eigenvalue problem (SRIEP). When a prior (indefinite) solution A to the SRIEP is known, positive definite/semidefinite solutions are formulated in terms of A and basis matrices of the column space of the given recursive matrix R and the null space of RT. Taking into account some computational concerns, an algorithm is proposed that can check whether the SRIEP has a positive definite/semidefinite solution and find such a solution if it exists. Several numerical experiments are given to illustrate the performance of the algorithm.

Abstract:A novel factorization for the sum of two single-pair matrices is established as product of lower-triangular, tridiagonal, and upper-triangular matrices, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for tridiagonal matrix inversion. Subsequent factorizations are established, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for the inverse sum of two single-pair matrices. An application to derive the symbolic inverse of a particular Gram matrix is presented, and the numerical stability of the formulas is studied.

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for invertibility of symmetric three-by-three block matrices having a double saddle-point structure \fb{that guarantee the unique solvability of double saddle-point systems}. We consider various scenarios, including the case where all diagonal blocks are allowed to be rank deficient. Under certain conditions related to the nullity of the blocks and intersections of their kernels, an explicit formula for the inverse is derived.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of inverse eigenvalue problem which is the reconstruction of real symmetric five-diagonal matrix by there different eigenpairs is proposed. Given there distinguished eigenpairs, using the special computational relationship of Jacobi matrix and symmetric five-diagonal matrix, the solvability of the problem is discussed, and the sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a solution of this problem, as well as the analytic formula of this solution, are derived. Furthermore, to prove the theory, an appropriate numerical experiment is given by programming.

Abstract:An available parametric correction method for asymmetric multivariable nondefective systems is investigated. It will be proved that the eigensolutions associated with the repeated eigenvalues are not differentiable, although their partial derivatives exist. A calculable generalized Jacobian matrix is presented based on the first-order Taylor expansion of the repeated root eigenpairs as the case of symmetric systems, which ensures the feasibility of the inverse sensitivity method for parametric correction. The first-order directional derivatives of the repeated root eigenpairs are also found. Two numerical asymmetric examples are given to verify the validity of the method by use of simulated data.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider to solve a general form of real and symmetric n× n matrices M , C, K with M being positive definite for an inverse quadratic eigenvalue problem (IQEP): Q(λ)x ≡ (λ2M + λC + K)x = 0, so that Q(λ) has a partially prescribed subset of k eigenvalues and eigenvectors (k ≤ n). Via appropriate choice of free variables in the general form of IQEP, for k = n: we solve (i) an IQEP with K semi-positive definite, (ii) an IQEP having additionally assigned n eigenvalues, (iii) an IQEP having additionally assigned r eigenpairs (r ≤ √n) under closed complex conjugation; for k < n: we solve (i) a unique monic IQEP with k = n−1 which has an additionally assigned complex conjugate eigenpair, (ii) an IQEP having additionally assigned 2(n−k) complex eigenvalues with nonzero imaginary parts. Abstract:Based on the theory of inverse eigenvalue problem, a correction of an approximate model is discussed, which can be formulated as NX=XΛ, where X and Λ are given identified modal and eigenvalues matrices, respectively. The solvability conditions for a symmetric skew-Hamiltonian matrix N are established and an explicit expression of the solutions is derived. For any estimated matrix C of the analytical model, the best approximation matrix $$\widehat{N}$$ to minimize the Frobenius norm of C − N is provided and some numerical results are presented. A perturbation analysis of the solution $$\widehat{N}$$ is also performed, which has scarcely appeared in existing literatures.

Abstract:Finding the inverse of a matrix is an open problem especially when it comes to engineering problems due to their complexity and running time (cost) of matrix inversion algorithms. An optimum strategy to invert a matrix is, first, to reduce the matrix to a simple form, only then beginning a mathematical procedure. For symmetric matrices, the preferred simple form is tridiagonal. This makes tridiagonal matrices of high interest in applied mathematics and engineering problems. This study presents a time efficient, exact analytical approach for finding the inverse, decomposition, and solving linear systems of equations where symmetric circulant matrix appears. This matrix appears in many researches and it is different from ordinary tridiagonal matrices as there are two corner elements. For finding the inverse matrix, a set of matrices are introduced that any symmetric circulant matrix could be decomposed into them. After that, the exact analytical inverse of this set is found which gives the inverse of circulant matrix. Moreover, solving linear equations can be carried out using implemented decomposition where this matrix appears as a coefficient matrix. The methods principal strength is that it is as stable as any other direct methods (i.e., execute in a predictable number of operations). It is straightforward, understandable, solid as a rock and an exceptionally good psychological backup for those times when something is going wrong and you think it might be your linear equation solver. The downside of present method, and every other direct method, is the accumulation of round off errors.

Abstract:Abstract The Non-negative Inverse Eigenvalue Problem (NIEP) is a sub-problem extracted from inverse eigenvalue problem with a long history from 1930s determining the sufficient and necessary conditions in order that, σ={ λ 1 ,..., λ n }to be the spectrum of an entry wise non-negative n x n matrix. There had been many excellent researchers and scholars who contributed to discover many practical theories. The following of this paper would be then separated into two parts to further analyze the NIEP. In the first section of the paper, some important preexisting conclusions would be demonstrated and the groups’ understanding of these indispensable theories would be expressed. In the second section, three special and wildly used matrix, including tridiagongal matrix, circulant matrix, and symmetric matrix would be considered. The solution of the NIEP of these matrices done by the group would be expressed.
