Abstract:Hydration process of cement has great influence on concrete durability performance. Recent years, more and more attention has been paid on the cement fineness and the particle size distribution (PSD), which gradually becomes one of the significant control factors which affect the concrete durability. In this study, manufacturing system based on fluid jet mill has been developed for producing cement samples with different PSD. The OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) was manufactured to produce the cement sample MC with finer PSD. Experimental work has been carried out to observe the hydration process of the OPC and MC with Differential Scanning Calorimeter. The results showed that the finer cement leads to more rapid hydration rate, and higher final hydration degree. Concrete specimens using the cement samples OPC and MC have been casted for adiabatic temperature rise test with different casting temperature, to discuss the influence of the particle size distribution. The reference hydration heat generation rates of the OPC and MC were calculated, which can be used for considering the influence of the temperature history on hydration process. By comparing the reference hydration heat generation rates of the OPC and MC, it was found that the reference hydration heat generation rate can be influenced strongly by the particle size distribution of cement.
