Abstract:AbstractMaterials genome engineering represents the new frontier of materials research, and is disrupting the conventional “trial and error” paradigm for materials innovation. In the present perspective, the author reflects on the major achievements already made in five sub‐domains, including high‐efficiency materials computation and design, revolutionary experimental technologies, materials big data technologies, research and development of advanced materials, and industrial applications. Furthermore, the author lays out five crucial directions of future efforts for maturing the relevant technologies. These directions include cross‐scale modeling and computational design, artificial intelligence for materials science, automatic and intelligent experimentation, digital twin, and data resource management and sharing.

Abstract:Materials genome is an emerging technology to accelerate materials discovery, development, and deployment. In the past two decades, high-throughput materials experimentation tools have been developed and applied successfully to the discovery of a number of materials, ranging from advanced catalysts, dielectrics, electrodes, to high-temperature alloys. Materials computation and database technologies have also made remarkable progresses, particularly represented by the integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) developed in the past decade. Materials genome research integrates high-throughput computation and simulation, high-throughput experimentation, and materials database, throughout the materials discovery-to-deployment process, targeting to cut the materials development time and cost significantly. This review, is trying to give a brief and comprehensive introduction to materials genome technologies, with emphasis on high-throughput materials experimentation, as well as applications of materials computation and database. University of Electronics Science and Technology of China is one of the most active institutes in China in the filed of materials genome research, and some progresses are also highlighted in this review.

Abstract:In the era of rapid global digitalization, the internet, the Internet of Things（IoT） and computer technologies have made it highly efficient for data acquisition, storage and analysis. Data science, as the fourth paradigm of scientific discovery, has further accelerated the application of data in scientific researches. Governments, enterprises, research institutes and even individuals have accumulated a large amount of data. The role of data played in promoting the development of society, economy and technology is fully understood, therefore, there rises the demand for the data ecosystem, covering the whole production line from data production to data application. In this case, the necessity and progress of the essential features of data ecosystem are elucidated, including data classification, data standards, data collection and storage, intellectual property protection, data quality control and database of material data. The initial goal is to identify the significance of material data ecosystem. And the framework of data ecosystem of materials genome engineering is briefly demonstrated.

This paper reviews the progress of MGE in China from the aspects of the fundamental theory and methods, key technology and equipment, the R&D of new materials and related engineering application, talents training, formation and promotion of new concept of material genetic engineering. The paper also looks forward to the future development of MGE in China.

Abstract:Materials genome is a subversive frontier technology emerging in the field of international materials in recent years and also a propeller for the development of new materials. It brings fundamental changes to the traditional material research mode, aiming to accelerate the research and development of new materials and reduce costs, so as to support the development of electronic information, energy and environmental protection, aerospace, and other industries. In this paper, we introduce the strategic significance, national layout, and methods of materials genome technology and emphatically introduce the design idea and development status of materials database method. Then we summarize the development trends of materials genome and put forward suggestions for its future research, aiming to provide references for the development direction of materials genome technology in various countries, especially in developing countries.

Abstract:Since its launch in 2011, the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) has drawn the attention of researchers from academia, government, and industry worldwide. As one of the three tools of the MGI, the use of materials data, for the first time, has emerged as an extremely significant approach in materials discovery. Data science has been applied in different disciplines as an interdisciplinary field to extract knowledge from data. The concept of materials data science has been utilized to demonstrate its application in materials science. To explore its potential as an active research branch in the big data era, a three-tier system has been put forward to define the infrastructure for the classification, curation and knowledge extraction of materials data.

Abstract:Discovering new materials with excellent performance is a hot issue in the materials genome initiative. Traditional experiments and calculations often waste large amounts of time and money and are also limited by various conditions. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a new method to accelerate the discovery and design of new materials. In recent years, material discovery and design methods using machine learning have attracted much attention from material experts and have made some progress. This review first outlines available materials database and material data analytics tools and then elaborates on the machine learning algorithms used in materials science. Next, the field of application of machine learning in materials science is summarized, focusing on the aspects of structure determination, performance prediction, fingerprint prediction, and new material discovery. Finally, the review points out the problems of data and machine learning in materials science and points to future research. Using machine learning algorithms, the authors hope to achieve amazing results in material discovery and design.

A secured big-data sharing platform for materials genome engineering: State-of-the-art, challenges and architecture

Abstract:Materials are the foundation of social development. The vigorous development of big-data technology has brought new opportunities for material research and development, gradually entering the data -driven paradigm. How to safely collect, store and utilize material big-data to realize the design and prediction of advanced materials has essential research significance and value. Many material big-data platforms have been constructed to gather multi-source heterogeneous material data. However, these traditional platforms are hard to realize the safe and efficient circulation and utilization of data. Relying on the national Materials Genome Engineering (MGE) project, we built a secured big-data sharing platform and proposed corresponding data collection, storage, utilization, and security solutions. On the one hand, the blockchain framework working as a 'middleware' provides a standard application program interface for data interaction between participants, and participants do not need to perceive the underlying system framework; on the other hand, it provides a unified management and security mechanism for the platform. In terms of collection, the dynamic container model is used to solve the data normalization problem, thereby improving data quality. In terms of storage, data adaptors store normalized data in different databases for distributed storage and unified scheduling. The platform provides a unified service gateway to schedule all services for data utilization. The secured big-data sharing platform can improve data utilization, promote material data sharing, accelerate material discovery, and serve the data needs of high-throughput computing and the design of new materials. Abstract:The launching integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and materials genome engineering (MGE) has led the transformation of empirical and theoretical design paradigm into the rational computational one that further provides the basis for the data-driven design paradigm by integrating the high-throughput techniques in experiments and computations, the big data science with general principles, the informatics with knowledge discovery based on data mining and machine learning, and ultimately enabling the possibility of materials intelligence design (MID) via artificial intelligence. In this perspective article, we highlight the intelligent solution to acquire the property-structure-process-performance relationship of multilevel-structured materials by emphasizing modularization, automation, standardization, integration and intelligence, following the hierarchical relationship of data, information, knowledge and wisdom, which is essentially different from the past empirical, theoretical and computational paradigms. The new era of MID is expected to fundamentally reform the material innovation mode through an integrated infrastructure guided by novel concepts that is radically distinguished from the way of thinking and doing in the past, providing a perspective scientific vision and direction for future materials design.
