Abstract:Computational material science is a cutting- edge interdisciplinary,and plays an important role to improve material scientific discoveries and shorten the cycle of material development and industrialization. The United States,European Union,Japan and other major countries in the world attach great importance to the development of the computational materials and material simulation,and implement many research programs and projects. "Materials Genome Initiative" published by the United States in June 2011 has aroused further attention on computational materials and material simulation of other countries. China Xiangshan Science Conference on materials science systems engineering was also held in December 2011. In this paper,the recent progress on computational materials in some countries and research institutions was analyzed in order to provide some useful recommendations on China.

Abstract:Since the Material Genome Initiative (MGI) was proposed, high-throughput based technology has been widely employed in various fields of materials science. As a theoretical guide, material informatics has been introduced based on machine learning and data mining and high-throughput computation has been employed for large scale search, narrowing down the scope of the experiment trials. High-throughput materials experiments including synthesis, processing, and characterization technologies have become valuable research tools to pin down the prediction experimentally, enabling the discovery-to-deployment of advances materials more efficiently at a fraction of cost. This review aims to summarize the recent advances of high-throughput materials experiments and introduce briefly the development of materials design based on material genome concept. By selecting representative and classic works in the past years, various high-throughput preparation methods are introduced for different types of material gradient libraries, including metallic, inorganic materials, and polymers. Furthermore, high-throughput characterization approaches are comprehensively discussed, including both their advantages and limitations. Specifically, we focus on high-throughput mass spectrometry to analyze its current status and challenges in the application of catalysts screening.

Abstract:Discovering new materials with excellent performance is a hot issue in the materials genome initiative. Traditional experiments and calculations often waste large amounts of time and money and are also limited by various conditions. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a new method to accelerate the discovery and design of new materials. In recent years, material discovery and design methods using machine learning have attracted much attention from material experts and have made some progress. This review first outlines available materials database and material data analytics tools and then elaborates on the machine learning algorithms used in materials science. Next, the field of application of machine learning in materials science is summarized, focusing on the aspects of structure determination, performance prediction, fingerprint prediction, and new material discovery. Finally, the review points out the problems of data and machine learning in materials science and points to future research. Using machine learning algorithms, the authors hope to achieve amazing results in material discovery and design.

Abstract:Materials modelling and design using computational quantum and classical approaches is by now well established as an essential pillar in condensed matter physics, chemistry and materials science research, in addition to experiments and analytical theories. The past few decades have witnessed tremendous advances in methodology development and applications to understand and predict the ground-state, excited-state and dynamical properties of materials, ranging from molecules to nanoscopic/mesoscopic materials to bulk and reduced-dimensional systems. This issue of <i>Nature Materials</i> presents four in-depth Review Articles on the field. This Perspective aims to give a brief overview of the progress, as well as provide some comments on future challenges and opportunities. We envision that increasingly powerful and versatile computational approaches, coupled with new conceptual understandings and the growth of techniques such as machine learning, will play a guiding role in the future search and discovery of materials for science and technology.

Abstract:After developing the simulation-based design approach of materials for decades, computational materials science/engineering present the power in accelerating the discoveries and the applications of novel advanced materials through a digital-twin design paradigm of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME). While the short goals of ICME are almost accomplished, those long goals are on the right way, highlighting the concept/strategy of materials by design. In this brief review, the recent frameworks of data-driven ICME in the last two years are discussed, presenting key aspects of principles, benchmarks, standards, databases, platforms and toolkits via various case studies. The author and his collaborators display a routine of data-driven ICME utilized in the investigations of Mg alloys through integrating the high-throughput first-principles calculations and the CALPHAD approach. It is highlighted that the bonding charge density could not only provide an atomic and electronic insight into the physical nature of chemical bond of pure elements, alloys, metal melts, oxides and semiconductors, surface and interfaces, but also reveal the fundamental solid-solution strengthening/embrittlement mechanism and the grain refinement mechanism, paving a path in accelerating the development of advanced materials. It is believed that the combinations of high-throughput multi-scale computations and fast experiments/manufacturing will build the advanced algorithms in the development of a promising digital fabricating approach to overcome the present and future challenges, illuminating the way toward the digital-twin intelligent manufacturing era.

Abstract:Improvements in computational resources over the last decade are enabling a new era of computational prediction and design of novel materials. The resulting resources are databases such as the Materials Project (www.materialsproject.org), which is harnessing the power of supercomputing together with state-of-the-art quantum mechanical theory to compute the properties of all known inorganic materials, to design novel materials, and to make the data available for free to the community, together with online analysis and design algorithms. The current release contains data derived from quantum mechanical calculations for more than 70,000 materials and millions of associated materials properties. The software infrastructure carries out thousands of calculations per week, enabling screening and predictions for both novel solids as well as molecular species with targeted properties. As the rapid growth of accessible computed materials properties continues, the next frontier is harnessing that information for automated learning and accelerated discovery. In this article, we highlight some of the emerging and exciting efforts, and successes, as well as current challenges using descriptor-based and machine-learning methods for data-accelerated materials design.

Abstract:Materials are not only the foundation of the national economy, but also the carrier of high technology. It has become a research hotspot in the world to overcome the conventional methods and apply new methods to accelerate the development of new materials. Propelled by the great success in other fields, data-driven informatics methods begin to emerge as a new technique in material science. Machine learning, as a representative of data-driven methods, has received extensive attention in various fields. Machine learning is an interdisciplinary science that combines computer science, statistics, computational mathematics and engineering. In the field of materials science, machine learning methods show faster calculation speed and higher prediction accuracy compared with conventional theoretical computational simulations based on solving physical or chemical fundamental equations. Machine learning is an effective addition to the existing theoretical calculation methods and significantly increases the efficiency of materials computational simulation work. Furthermore, it also works for some systems or problems that the traditional theoretical calculation methods fail to solve. This approach could also enable targeted material design and development. This review would provide a brief overview on the fundamentals of machine learning, several typical algorithms in machine learning and the applications in materials science, and discuss the future challenges in this field.
Advances in data‐assisted high‐throughput computations for material design

Abstract:Extensive trial and error in the variable space is the main cause of low efficiency and high cost in material development. The experimental tasks can be reduced significantly in the case that the variable space is narrowed down by reliable computer simulations. Because of their numerous variables in material design, however, the variable space is still too large to be accessed thoroughly even with a computational approach. High‐throughput computations (HTC) make it possible to complete a material screening in a large space by replacing the conventionally manual and sequential operations with automatic, robust, and concurrent streamlines. The efficiency of HTC, which is one of the pillars of materials genome engineering, has been verified in many studies, but its applications are still limited by demanding computational costs. Introduction of data mining and artificial intelligence into HTC has become an effective approach to solve the problem. In the past years, many studies have focused on the development and application of HTC and data combined approaches, which is considered as a new paradigm in computational materials science. This review focuses on the main advances in the field of data‐assisted HTC for material research and development and provides our outlook on its future development.

Abstract:Moving the boundaries of knowledge, scientific research and technologies forward through the field of computational materials science requires a combination of fundamental understanding of materials properties, an appreciation of the limitations with our current approaches, and the ability to embrace new and emergent technologies. This short Essay highlights the works of the authors in the special issue “Computational Materials Design” published in Advanced Theory and Simulations. It emphasises the role that computational materials design plays in rationalizing and guiding experimental efforts in in the fields of catalysis, semiconductors, hydrogels, and solid‐state electrolytes. Increases in computational power together with accurate hybrid functionals within density functional theory are enabling more reliable and trustworthy descriptions of solids for various electronic and optoelectronic applications. Additionally, high‐throughput screening and machine learning are rapidly becoming indispensable tools in computational materials science across diverse applications such as engineering and predicting new catalysts. Such advances are setting the pace for our discovery of new and novel materials of the future.

Abstract:Successful materials innovations can transform society. However, materials research often involves long timelines and low success probabilities, dissuading investors who have expectations of shorter times from bench to business. A combination of emergent technologies could accelerate the pace of novel materials development by 10x or more, aligning the timelines of stakeholders (investors and researchers), markets, and the environment, while increasing return-on-investment. First, tool automation enables rapid experimental testing of candidate materials. Second, high-throughput computing (HPC) concentrates experimental bandwidth on promising compounds by predicting and inferring bulk, interface, and defect-related properties. Third, machine learning connects the former two, where experimental outputs automatically refine theory and help define next experiments. We describe state-of-the-art attempts to realize this vision and identify resource gaps. We posit that over the coming decade, this combination of tools will transform the way we perform materials research. There are considerable first-mover advantages at stake, especially for grand challenges in energy and related fields, including computing, healthcare, urbanization, water, food, and the environment.

Abstract:In the 50 years that succeeded Richard Feynman’s exposition of the idea that there is ‘plenty of room at the bottom’ for manipulating individual atoms for the synthesis and manufacturing processing of materials, the materials-by-design paradigm is being developed gradually through synergistic integration of experimental material synthesis and characterization with predictive computational modeling and optimization. This paper reviews how this paradigm creates the possibility to develop materials according to specific, rational designs from the molecular to the macroscopic scale. We discuss promising techniques in experimental small-scale material synthesis and large-scale fabrication methods to manipulate atomistic or macroscale structures, which can be designed by computational modeling. These include recombinant protein technology to produce peptides and proteins with tailored sequences encoded by recombinant DNA, self-assembly processes induced by conformational transition of proteins, additive manufacturing for designing complex structures, and qualitative and quantitative characterization of materials at different length scales. We describe important material characterization techniques using numerous methods of spectroscopy and microscopy. We detail numerous multi-scale computational modeling techniques that complements these experimental techniques: DFT at the atomistic scale; fully atomistic and coarse-grain molecular dynamics at the molecular to mesoscale; continuum modeling at the macroscale. Additionally, we present case studies that utilize experimental and computational approaches in an integrated manner to broaden our understanding of the properties of two-dimensional materials and materials based on silk and silk-elastin-like proteins.
Liquid Metal Material Genome: Initiation of a New Research Track Towards Discovery of Advanced Energy Materials

Abstract:As the basis of modern industry, the roles materials play are becoming increasingly vital in this day and age. With many superior physical properties over conventional fluids, the low melting point liquid metal material, especially room-temperature liquid metal, is recently found to be uniquely useful in a wide variety of emerging areas from energy, electronics to medical sciences. However, with the coming enormous utilization of such materials, serious issues also arise which urgently need to be addressed. A biggest concern to impede the large scale application of room-temperature liquid metal technologies is that there is currently a strong shortage of the materials and species available to meet the tough requirements such as cost, melting point, electrical and thermal conductivity, etc. Inspired by the Material Genome Initiative as issued in 2011 by the United States of America, a more specific and focused project initiative was proposed in this paper—the liquid metal material genome aimed to discover advanced new functional alloys with low melting point so as to fulfill various increasing needs. The basic schemes and road map for this new research program, which is expected to have a worldwide significance, were outlined. The theoretical strategies and experimental methods in the research and development of liquid metal material genome were introduced. Particularly, the calculation of phase diagram (CALPHAD) approach as a highly effective way for material design was discussed. Further, the first-principles (FP) calculation was suggested to combine with the statistical thermodynamics to calculate the thermodynamic functions so as to enrich the CALPHAD database of liquid metals. When the experimental data are too scarce to perform a regular treatment, the combination of FP calculation, cluster variation method (CVM) or molecular dynamics (MD), and CALPHAD, referred to as the mixed FP-CVMCALPHAD method can be a promising way to solve the problem. Except for the theoretical strategies, several parallel processing experimental methods were also analyzed, which can help improve the efficiency of finding new liquid metal materials and reducing the cost. The liquid metal material genome proposal as initiated in this paper will accelerate the process of finding and utilization of new functional materials.

Abstract:Abstract The marriage of artificial intelligence (AI) and Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) could profoundly change the landscape of modern materials research, leading to a new paradigm of data‐driven and AI‐driven materials discovery. In this perspective, we will give an overview on the central role of AI in the MGI research. In particular, an emerging research field of ab initio AI, which applies state‐of‐the‐art AI techniques to help solve bottleneck problems of ab initio computation, will be introduced. The development of ab initio AI will greatly accelerate high‐throughput computation, promote the construction of large materials database, and open new opportunities for future research of MGI.

Abstract:Computational models are an essential tool for the design, characterization, and discovery of novel materials. Hard computational tasks in materials science stretch the limits of existing high-performance supercomputing centers, consuming much of their simulation, analysis, and data resources. Quantum computing, on the other hand, is an emerging technology with the potential to accelerate many of the computational tasks needed for materials science. In order to do that, the quantum technology must interact with conventional high-performance computing in several ways: approximate results validation, identification of hard problems, and synergies in quantum-centric supercomputing. In this paper, we provide a perspective on how quantum-centric supercomputing can help address critical computational problems in materials science, the challenges to face in order to solve representative use cases, and new suggested directions.

Abstract:The development of new technological materials has historically been a difficult and time-consuming task. The traditional role of computation in materials design has been to better understand existing materials. However, an emerging paradigm for accelerated materials discovery is to design new compounds in silico using first-principles calculations, and then perform experiments on the computationally designed candidates. In this paper, we provide a review of ab initio computational materials design, focusing on instances in which a computational approach has been successfully applied to propose new materials of technological interest in the laboratory. Our examples include applications in renewable energy, electronic, magnetic and multiferroic materials, and catalysis, demonstrating that computationally guided materials design is a broadly applicable technique. We then discuss some of the common features and limitations of successful theoretical predictions across fields, examining the different ways in which first-principles calculations can guide the final experimental result. Finally, we present a future outlook in which we expect that new models of computational search, such as high-throughput studies, will play a greater role in guiding materials advancements.

Abstract:Materials genome is a subversive frontier technology emerging in the field of international materials in recent years and also a propeller for the development of new materials. It brings fundamental changes to the traditional material research mode, aiming to accelerate the research and development of new materials and reduce costs, so as to support the development of electronic information, energy and environmental protection, aerospace, and other industries. In this paper, we introduce the strategic significance, national layout, and methods of materials genome technology and emphatically introduce the design idea and development status of materials database method. Then we summarize the development trends of materials genome and put forward suggestions for its future research, aiming to provide references for the development direction of materials genome technology in various countries, especially in developing countries.

Based on the materials genome of all solid state lithium ion battery realized national project

Abstract:Since June 2011, United State announced the program of Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), which accelerated process from the materials discovery to applications, and greatly reduced the R&D cost. The Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) correspondingly approved to start“The project of materials genetic engineering about key technology and support platform” in 2016, and the item of“Solid-state lithium battery and key materials research and development based on the materials genome technology”has been officially approved in this August. Associated with 11 domestic institutions, Professor Feng Pan of Peking University is the director of this project. This project will study the high-throughput calculation, manufacture and monitoring technology, accelerate the research of all solid-state lithium ion batteries and key materials, and develop all solid state battery prototypes to fundamentally solve the safety issue of lithium ion batteries.
