Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Three single-mode photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) are put together closely to construct three PCWs directional coupler (3PCWDC). It is found that the coupling coefficient of two even modes excited by the input field symmetrically entering 3PCWDC may be increased dramatically by reducing the size scales of dielectric rods between the neighbouring PCWs. The coupling length in this structure can be much shorter than that in conventional PCWs within the frequency range of interest. The application of this feature to an ultracompact, wide bandwidth and high-transmission power splitter is addressed. The simulation results by using the finite-difference time-domain method show that the structure exhibits new interesting characteristics.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:An ultra-compact broadband 2 x 2 3 dB power splitter is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing a subwavelength- grating (SWG)-assisted asymmetric directional coupler. In the present design, a subwavelength grating is inserted into the straight coupling region of an asymmetric directional coupler, so that the refractive index and the dispersion properties of this structure are engineered for achieving an ultra-broad bandwidth and an ultra-compact footprint. For the present power splitter with a straight coupling region as short as 5.25 mu m, the bandwidth is as large as 300 nm (1400 similar to 1700 nm) for achieving an imbalance of <0.4 dB and an excess loss of <0.33 dB for the fundamental transverse electrical (TE) mode. The fabricated splitter works well with an imbalance less than 0.5 dB and with an excess loss less than 1 dB in a broad wavelength-band from 1450 to 1650 nm.

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:Optical power splitter is an essential component for photonics integrated circuits with a variety of applications such as integrated photonic modulators and single-photon detectors. This paper proposes and demonstrates a new design for a 3-dB optical power splitter with curvature optimized adiabatic taper which can achieve ultra-broadband operation, low loss, compact, and fabrication-friendly. The design incorporates a third order Bezier curve to form the adiabatic tapers, with optimized control point positions that effectively enhance waveguide coupling strength while maintaining high transmission efficiency within a compact footprint of and 200 nm minimum feature size. In consequence, simulation results reveal that the design could evenly split the input TE light over an operation bandwidth of 500 nm with an insertion loss (IL) of less than 0.493 dB across 1350 nm to 1850 nm wavelength. A 5-stage cascaded power splitter and a power splitter-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) was fabricated for precise measuring. Experimental results demonstrate an average IL of 0.096 dB at 1550 nm, with an IL less than 0.35 dB over the entire measurement range of 1490 nm to 1640 nm. Additionally, the device has a good fabrication tolerance to variations in etching depth, waveguide width, tip width, and sidewall angle.

Abstract:The multimode power splitter is a basic component in mode-division multiplexing systems. In this paper, we propose an ultra-broadband silicon multimode power splitter enabling arbitrary power splitting ratios. The proposed multimode splitter is designed based on a waveguide crossing with an obliquely embedded subwavelength grating (SWG) transflector. The incident multiple guided-modes can be split into two beams with low excess losses and low crosstalk by the SWG transflector where the thin-film interference effect happens. As an example, a silicon multimode power splitter is designed to work with the three lowest-order modes of TE polarization. Any desired splitting ratio ranging from 0% to 100% can be achieved by engineering the structural parameters of the SWG. Moreover, the desired splitting ratio can be very uniform over an extremely broad bandwidth of ≥ 415 nm, covering O-, E-, S-, C-, L- and U-bands. The intermodal crosstalk is < −20 dB for all the input modes in theory. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first multimode power splitter enabling any desired power splitting ratios in all the optical communication bands.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and efficient 3-dB power splitter for mode division multiplexing is proposed and demonstrated experimentally in this letter. The device is realized via pixelated meta-structure with a small footprint of only 4 x 4.5 mu m(2). The measured results show that the insertion losses and inter-mode crosstalk are lower than 1.5 dB and -15 dB for TE0, TE1 and TE2 modes across the wavelength band of 1530-1570 nm. The measured power imbalance between the two output ports are within 0.35 dB. The tolerances to the fabrication errors and temperature variations are also investigated. The demonstrated three-mode power splitter can directly split the mode multiplexed signals without the need of demultiplexing. Such an integrated functional element helps to significantly increase integration density of photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A dual-mode 3 dB power splitter for application in an on-chip mode (de)multiplexing system is proposed and demonstrated. This device is composed of mode converters cascaded with a Y-junction. The simulation results show that ∼50∶50 splitting ratio can be achieved for both TM0 mode and TM1 mode over a wide wavelength range from 1.52 to 1.62 μm. The fabricated device, which consists of a multiplexer, a dual-mode 3 dB power splitter, and a demultiplexer, has insertion losses of 0.54 dB for TM0 mode and 0.86 dB for TM1 mode at 1.55 μm wavelength. The measured cross talk is 15.7 and 17.2 dB at 1.55 μm wavelength for the TM0 mode and TM1 mode, respectively.

Abstract:The self-imaging effect based on symmetrical interference in multimode layer-by-layer photonic crystal waveguides (PhCWs), is numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With the properties of twofold images, a kind of three-dimensional (3D) PhCW-based power splitters with an ultracompact size using complete photonic bandgaps is proposed, calculated, and analyzed. The presented structure can be extended for the design of M×N power splitters for 3D photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:The properties of two-fold images, based on asymmetric interference in multimode interference-based photonic crystal waveguides, are numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With these image properties, 2 x 2 power splitters (PSs) with an ultracompact size are designed. Arbitrary splitting ratio can be achieved by modifying the sizes (the effective refractive indices) of one pair of rods in the multimode region. As an example, a 3-dB 2 x 2 PS with a size of 24 x 8 mu m(2) is presented with an output efficiency as high as 98%. The method can be extended for the design of M x N PSs for photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:We design and experimentally demonstrate a compact and broadband 2 × 2 3 dB optical power splitter engineered by bricked subwavelength gratings (BSWG). In this work, 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods are combined to optimize the power splitter. The simulation results show that the coupling length is 6.11 μm, the excess loss (EL) is lower than 0.6 dB and the power splitting ratio is better than 3 ± 0.72 dB within the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for the TE mode. Experimental results show EL < 0.77 dB and power splitting ratio better than 3 ± 0.74 dB in a bandwidth of 100 nm (1480 nm–1580 nm, limited by the laser tuning range and grating coupler). Additionally, the minimum feature size of the BSWG is 139 nm, which is larger than that of the conventional SWG (∼100 nm), thereby easing fabrication challenges.

Abstract:Mode-division multiplexing is an enabling technique for large-capacity on-chip optical interconnects. Multimode power splitter becomes the subject of interests which is highly desirable. However, challenges still exist for multimode splitter with arbitrary power ratio. Inspired by geometric optics, we demonstrate a series of power splitters based on T-branch waveguide mirrors which consist of subwavelength nanoholes. Arbitrary split ratio can be achieved by modifying the transmittance and reflectance of the waveguide mirrors. The devices can support up to 9 modes from TE 0 -TE 8 . For a proof-of-concept demonstration, we fabricate dual-mode splitters with power ratios of 40:60, 30:70 and 20:80. For both TE 0 and TE 1 modes, the measured excess losses are lower than 0.92 dB, and the crosstalk are all below -14.42 dB within the wavelength range from 1540 to 1580 nm.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel W-band waveguide power divider based on H-plane slot bridge is presented. The divider, relying on the H-plane waveguide multi-step couplers, consists of a coupling gap in the narrow common wall between two WR10 waveguides and two arc debosses in H-plane of the two waveguides. The power dividing is realized by adjusting the length of the coupling gap and radius of the arc deboss. The designed divider has a good performance over 80-90GHz. The amplitude balance of two output ports is within ±0.3dB; the reflection coefficient is less than -22dB and the isolation is greater than 22dB. The proposed structure allows the mechanical tolerance within 0.2mm.
