Abstract:Based on theories of computer graphics and computer simulation technology, this paper has set forth appearance parameter models of fancy yarns in the light of the spinning principle and the physical and geometric structure of fancy yarns. And in combination with local illumination model and diffuse reflection model, the paper has solved the key problems of graphics expression of yarn appearance and simulating structural effect of yarns in light. This paper will discuss the methods of simulating three kinds of fancy yarn - loop yarn, wave yarn and chenille yarn. A visual representation, namely parameterized structural model of appearance, is created by abstracting from the physical and geometric configuration of real fancy yarn. Such improved approach for simulation would help for further optimizing the design of the fabrics made from fancy yarns, which has the theoretical and practical value.

Abstract:Plotting spectra of a range of almost Mathieu operators reveals a beautiful fractal-like image that contains multiple copies of a butterfly image. We demonstrate that plotting the butterflies using a gap-labelling scheme based on K-theory or Chern numbers reveals systematic discontinuities in the gap positioning. A proper image is produced only when we take into account these discontinuities, and close the butterfly wingtips at the points of discontinuity. A conjecture is presented showing a simple formula for locating the discontinuities, and numerical evidence is given to support the conjecture. We also present new renderings of this butterfly.

Abstract:The Hofstadter butterfly spectral patterns of lattice electrons in an external magnetic field yield some of the most beguiling images in physics. Here we explore the magneto-electronic spectra of systems with moire spatial patterns, concentrating on the case of twisted bilayer graphene. Because long-period spatial patterns are accurately formed at small twist angles, fractal butterfly spectra and associated magneto-transport and magneto-mechanical anomalies emerge at accessible magnetic field strengths.

Abstract:Various computer simulations regarding, e.g. the weather or structural mechanics, solve complex problems on a two-dimensional domain. They mostly do so by splitting the input domain into a finite set of smaller and simpler elements on which the simulation can be run fast and efficiently. This process of splitting can be automatized by using subdivision schemes. Given the wide range of simulation problems to be tackled, an equally wide range of subdivision schemes is available. This paper illustrates a subdivision scheme that splits the input domain into pentagons. Repeated application gives rise to fractal-like structures. Furthermore, the resulting subdivided domain admits to certain weaving patterns. These patterns are subsequently generalized to several other subdivision schemes. As a final contribution, we provide paper models illustrating the weaving patterns induced by the pentagonal subdivision scheme. Furthermore, we present a jigsaw puzzle illustrating both the subdivision process and the induced weaving pattern. These transform the visual and abstract mathematical algorithms into tactile objects that offer exploration possibilities aside from the visual. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:Irregular needling embroidery has a very high artistic value as a Changzhou craftwork. Artists use stitches of rich colors and apply different types of stitch categories from course to fine on multiple layers to express objects. This paper proposes an irregular needling embroidery rendering method based on image. We first decompose the image into different regions, vector fields and image detail information to guild the subsequent simulation process. Then we hierarchically render the image with a series of layers and propose a multilayer rendering technique. Additionally, we build a stitch dictionary and present a method to simulate the threads. Experimental results demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper transfers reference images quickly and efficiently into their irregular needling embroidery simulations.

Abstract:Random-needle embroidery is a kind of traditional Chinese embroidery where artists reproduce the original color image using multilayered intersecting stitches and overlapped deliberately. In other words, artists embroider intersecting stitches layer by layer to depict true color subjects. To create this embroidery art, the major challenge lies on evenly distribution of intersecting stitches to prevent the canvas in embroidery areas from being exposed. Meanwhile, intersecting stitches in each layer should be distributed as evenly as possible so that each layer of intersecting stitch can be quantified as a segment color to synthesize the target segment color. To tackle these challenges, we introduce local texture growth mechanism from example-based discrete element texture synthesis to the application of random-needle embroidery art stylization and propose a new local growth where a uniformity metric is designed to keep intersecting stitches nearly evenly distributed in each layer. In addition, we adopt a color dithering model to specify a color for each layer of monochromatic intersecting stitches at microscopic scale. We apply our method on a rich variety of images, and visually appealing random-needle embroidery images can be obtained in all cases.

Abstract:Random-needle Embroidery (RNE) is a graceful Chinese Embroidery art enrolled in the World Intangible Heritage. In this paper, we propose a rendering method to translate a reference image into an art image with the style of random-needles. Since RNE artists create artwork by stitching thousands of intersecting threads with complex patterns into an embroidery cloth, the key of RNE rendering is to define its threads distributions in vector space (actual physical space) and generate its artistic styles in pixel space (coordinate system of the image). To this end, we first define "stitch" which is a collection of threads arranged in a certain pattern as the basic rendering primitive. A vector space stitch model is presented, which can automatically generate various thread distributions in stitches. Then, the rendering primitives are generated by rasterizing the stitches on 2D pixel arrays. During runtime, new stitches can be synthesized to portray the image content via sparse modeling based on the pre-defined stitches. In order to avoid mosaic effects, this result is further refined by incorporating local stitch vector constraints, in which we enforce the thread distribution of the local stitch to be similar to its adjacent stitches. Finally, rendering image is generated by placing stitches with different attributes on the canvas. Experiments show that our method can perform fine images with the style of random-needle.

Abstract:We develop an optimization-based method to model smocking, a surface embroidery technique that provides decorative geometric texturing while maintaining stretch properties of the fabric. During smocking, multiple pairs of points on the fabric are stitched together, creating non-manifold geometric features and visually pleasing textures. Designing smocking patterns is challenging, because the outcome of stitching is unpredictable: the final texture is often revealed only when the whole smocking process is completed, necessitating painstaking physical fabrication and time consuming trial-and-error experimentation. This motivates us to seek a digital smocking design method. Straightforward attempts to compute smocked fabric geometry using surface deformation or cloth simulation methods fail to produce realistic results, likely due to the intricate structure of the designs, the large number of contacts and high-curvature folds. We instead formulate smocking as a graph embedding and shape deformation problem. We extract a coarse graph representing the fabric and the stitching constraints, and then derive the graph structure of the smocked result. We solve for the 3D embedding of this graph, which in turn reliably guides the deformation of the high-resolution fabric mesh. Our optimization based method is simple, efficient, and flexible, which allows us to build an interactive system for smocking pattern exploration. To demonstrate the accuracy of our method, we compare our results to real fabrications on a large set of smocking patterns

Abstract:We present an image stylization method to simulate Random-needle Embroidery which has been designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage. We first define the rendering primitive of this art, namely, stitch, i.e., collection of threads arranged in a certain pattern inseparably both in vector space and pixel space in vector space, we design different thread distributions which include the orientations, intersection angles, lengths and widths of threads in stitches, and in pixel space, the rendering primitives are generated by rasterizing the stitches on 2D pixel arrays. We also generate a dictionary to represent the generated stitches. Afterwards, for an input image, based on image segmentation and feature extraction, each region is partitioned into sub-regions to describe the content of the region. Finally, for each sub-region new stitches can be synthesized by optimizing a linear combination of stitch dictionary atoms via sparse representation, and rendering image is generated by placing stitches with different attributes on the canvas. Experimental results show that our method can effec-tively translate the input image into an art image with the style of random-needle.

Abstract:With the idea of an eventual classification of 3-bridge links,\ we define a very nice class of 3-balls (called butterflies) with faces identified by pairs, such that the identification space is $S^{3},$ and the image of a prefered set of edges is a link. Several examples are given. We prove that every link can be represented in this way (butterfly representation). We define the butterfly number of a link, and we show that the butterfly number and the bridge number of a link coincide. This is done by defining a move on the butterfly diagram. We give an example of two different butterflies with minimal butterfly number representing the knot $8_{20}.$ This raises the problem of finding a set of moves on a butterfly diagram connecting diagrams representing the same link. This is left as an open problem.

Abstract:We examine the holonomy-perturbed traceless SU(2) character variety of the trivial four-stranded tangle {p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4} X [0,1] in S^2 X [0,1] equipped with a strong marking, either an earring or a bypass. Viewing these marked tangles as endomorphisms in the cobordism category from the four-punctured sphere to itself, we identify the images of these endomorphisms in the Weinstein symplectic partial category under the partially defined holonomy-perturbed traceless character variety functor. We express these endomorphisms on immersed curves in the pillowcase in terms of doubling and figure eight operations and prove they have the same image.

Abstract:This paper presents a convenient graphical tool for encoding visual patterns (such as image patches and image atoms) as point constellations in a space spanned by perceptual features and with a clear geometrical interpretation. General theory and a practical pattern encoding scheme are presented, inspired by encoding polarization states of a light wave on the Poincare sphere. This new pattern encoding scheme can be useful for many applications in image processing and computer vision. Here, three possible applications are illustrated, in clustering perceptually similar patterns, visualizing properties of learned dictionaries of image atoms and generating new dictionaries of image atoms from spherical codes.

Abstract:We construct frieze patterns of type D_N with entries which are numbers of matchings between vertices and triangles of corresponding triangulations of a punctured disc. For triangulations corresponding to orientations of the Dynkin diagram of type D_N, we show that the numbers in the pattern can be interpreted as specialisations of cluster variables in the corresponding Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra.

Abstract:The hierarchical structure of the butterfly fractal -- the Hofstader butterfly, is found to be described by an octonary tree. In this framework of building the butterfly graph, every iteration generates sextuplets of butterflies, each with a tail that is made up of an infinity of butterflies. Identifying {\it butterfly with a tale} as the building block, the tree is constructed with eight generators represented by unimodular matrices with integer coefficients. This Diophantine description provides one to one mapping with the butterfly fractal, encoding the magnetic flux interval and the topological quantum numbers of every butterfly. The butterfly tree is a generalization of the ternary tree describing the set of primitive Pythagorean triplets.

Abstract:Bobbin lace is a fibre art form in which threads are braided together to form a fabric, often with a very detailed and complex design. In traditional practice, each region of the fabric is filled with a periodic texture. We establish the groundwork for non-periodic lace patterns and present three new quasiperiodic families based on Sturmian words, the Penrose tiling by thick and thin rhombs and the Ammann-bar decoration of the Penrose tiling.

Abstract:Random-needle Embroidery is a graceful Chinese art designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage, which “draws” beautiful images with thousands of free-form threads. In this paper, we explore techniques for automatically translating an input image into an art image with the random-needle style. The key idea is to generate rendering primitives of this art first, from which the corresponding dictionary is learned to further sparsely code the contents in the input image. To this end, we first define the artistic style of Random-needle Embroidery by introducing the notion of “stitch”, i.e., collection of threads arranged in a certain pattern, as the basic rendering primitive. Then, we adopt sparse coding to generate a stitch dictionary which gives a compact representation of the generated stitches. During runtime, new and more image content-adaptive stitches can be synthesized by optimizing a linear combination of stitch dictionary atoms via sparse representation. Then, the synthesized stitches are placed on the canvas sequentially and connected to adjacent stitches by stitch quilting. After placing all the stitches, a blank filling strategy is proposed and adopted to fill the uncovered areas on the canvas. The experimental results show our method can generate engaging images with the random-needle style. Moreover, our rendering image is better than those obtained by using two other state-of-the art methods.
