Abstract:Plotting spectra of a range of almost Mathieu operators reveals a beautiful fractal-like image that contains multiple copies of a butterfly image. We demonstrate that plotting the butterflies using a gap-labelling scheme based on K-theory or Chern numbers reveals systematic discontinuities in the gap positioning. A proper image is produced only when we take into account these discontinuities, and close the butterfly wingtips at the points of discontinuity. A conjecture is presented showing a simple formula for locating the discontinuities, and numerical evidence is given to support the conjecture. We also present new renderings of this butterfly.

Abstract:Mathematics has a strong logical interconnection with structural design and architecture. Ratios are good examples of their interconnectivity. Nature is attractive due to the proper ratios of various components in them and between others. In nature, trees, forests, leaves, flowers, fruits, Himalayas, hills, valleys, springs, rivers, lakes, etc. show a rhythmic balance and seem harmonic and aesthetically pleasing. The golden ratio is considered the most pleasing to human visual sensation not limited only to aesthetic beauty but also found prominently in the natural world and is a fascinating topic. It can be constructed in different ways depending on the geometrical structures preferred. In this paper, our focus is on the geometry of the golden ratio.

Abstract:This paper proposes fractal strokes, to make fractal computation as controllable as ink. A fractal stroke is a skeletal stroke that recursively copies, recolors and distorts its neighboring image and then paint on the canvas. Fractal strokes can generate self-similar textures. On one hand, the general visual attributes of a stroke are decided by the user. On the other hand, a stroke's fine details depend on its context. Many modifications can easily been made so that fractal strokes can probably generate various new results beyond the scope of traditional artistic techniques.

Abstract:Hierarchical sets such as the Pythagorean triplets ($\cal{PT}$) and the integral Apollonian gaskets ($\cal{IAG}$) are iconic mathematical sets made up of integers that resonate with a wide spectrum of inquisitive minds. Here we show that these abstract objects are related with a quantum fractal made up of integers, known as the {\it Hofstadter Butterfly}. The "butterfly fractal" describes a {\it physical system} of electrons in a crystal in a magnetic field, representing exotic states of matter known as {\it integer quantum Hall} states. Integers of the butterfly are the quanta of Hall conductivity that appear in a highly convoluted form in the integers of the $\cal{PT}$ and the $\cal{IAG}$. Scaling properties of these integers, as we zoom into the self-similar butterfly fractal are given by a class of quadratic irrationals that lace the butterfly in a highly intricate and orderly pattern, some describing a {\it mathematical kaleidoscope}. The number theoretical aspects are all concealed in Lorentz transformations along the light cone in abstract Minkowski space where subset of these are related to the celebrated {\it Pell's equation}.

Abstract:The Hofstadter butterfly spectral patterns of lattice electrons in an external magnetic field yield some of the most beguiling images in physics. Here we explore the magneto-electronic spectra of systems with moire spatial patterns, concentrating on the case of twisted bilayer graphene. Because long-period spatial patterns are accurately formed at small twist angles, fractal butterfly spectra and associated magneto-transport and magneto-mechanical anomalies emerge at accessible magnetic field strengths.

Abstract:This paper analyzed six pattern layout forms of the golden ratio based on HERMES scarves, i.e., point layout, rectangular layout, triangle layout, spiral layout, circular layout and the "#" glyph layout. After verifying the results, we found there was a hidden golden ratio in HERMES scarves. The beauty ratio can bring physical and mental pleasure to people's emotion, enrich the innovation of pattern layout and enhance the sense of coordination. All these will undoubtedly provide designers with convenient and effective pattern layout inspirations and train of design thoughts. At the same time, using golden ratio in the scarves can give a certain scientific basis to the scarves pattern layout, which would allow a higher appreciation for the silk scarves.

Abstract:The hierarchical structure of the butterfly fractal -- the Hofstader butterfly, is found to be described by an octonary tree. In this framework of building the butterfly graph, every iteration generates sextuplets of butterflies, each with a tail that is made up of an infinity of butterflies. Identifying {\it butterfly with a tale} as the building block, the tree is constructed with eight generators represented by unimodular matrices with integer coefficients. This Diophantine description provides one to one mapping with the butterfly fractal, encoding the magnetic flux interval and the topological quantum numbers of every butterfly. The butterfly tree is a generalization of the ternary tree describing the set of primitive Pythagorean triplets.

Abstract:Golden section is one of the most famous aesthetic properties in the arts. The present study explores the golden section in Chinese contemporary poetry texts in terms of the 'h-point' on the word-frequency-distribution curves as well as their 'feet'. It demonstrates that the golden section of the selected Chinese poetry is not sitting on the 'h-point', but it is possible for us to investigate the 'feet' of them.

Abstract:The Golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence are used as proportions in design as symbols of beauty and harmony. That symbolism is a result of the strong connections in their mathematical nature. The Golden section is a number, introduced with Greek letter , which is found by dividing a line into two parts as the longer part divided by the smaller part is equal as the whole length of longer and smaller parts divided by the longer part. Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where every number is equal to the two numbers before it. An investigation of application of proportions based on the Golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence in the fashion design and pattern making of ladies' clothing is the main aim of the paper. Based on the study it may be concluded that in fashion design and pattern making the Golden ratio and Fibonacci sequence can be used in creation of beautiful and harmonic forms directly or with the help of geometrical figures as: In directly use the Golden and Fibonacci numbers proportions can be in one and the same or different directions. In the application with the help of geometrical shapes the Golden and Fibonacci figures combine proportioning and form creation. The Golden and Fibonacci shapes can be used directly as forms or as frames of forms creation of elements and pieces. Its application can be in different directions and location according the bodice. The Golden section and Fibonacci sequence can combine proportions with other principles of design as symmetry, rhythm, etc.

Abstract:In the words of the twentieth-century British mathematician G. H. Hardy, "the human function is to 'discover or observe' mathematics" (1). For centuries, starting from the ancient Greeks, mankind has hunted for beauty and order in arts and in nature. This quest for mathematical beauty has led to the discovery of recurrent mathematical structures, such as the golden ratio, Fibonacci, and Lucas numbers, whose ubiquitous presences have been tantalizing the minds of artists and scientists alike. The captivation for this quest comes with high stakes. In fact, art is the definitive expression of human creativity, and its mathematical understanding would deliver us the keys for decoding human culture and its evolution (2). However, it was not until fairly recently that the scope and the scale of the human quest for mathematical beauty was radically expanded by the simultaneous confluence of three separate innovations. The mass digitization of large art archives, the surge in computational power, and the development of robust statistical methods to capture hidden patterns in vast amounts of data have made it possible to reveal the---otherwise unnoticeable to the human eye---mathematics concealed in large artistic corpora. Starting from its inception, marked by the foundational work by Birkhoff (3), progress in the broad field of computational aesthetics has reached a scale that would have been unimaginable just a decade ago. The recent expansion is not limited to the visual arts (2) but includes music (4), stories (5), language phonology (6), humor in jokes (7), and even equations (8); for a comprehensive review, see ref. 9.

Abstract:With the idea of an eventual classification of 3-bridge links,\ we define a very nice class of 3-balls (called butterflies) with faces identified by pairs, such that the identification space is $S^{3},$ and the image of a prefered set of edges is a link. Several examples are given. We prove that every link can be represented in this way (butterfly representation). We define the butterfly number of a link, and we show that the butterfly number and the bridge number of a link coincide. This is done by defining a move on the butterfly diagram. We give an example of two different butterflies with minimal butterfly number representing the knot $8_{20}.$ This raises the problem of finding a set of moves on a butterfly diagram connecting diagrams representing the same link. This is left as an open problem.

Abstract:Mathematics can help analyze the arts and inspire new artwork. Mathematics can also help make transformations from one artistic medium to another, considering exceptions and choices, as well as artists' individual and unique contributions. We propose a method based on diagrammatic thinking and quantum formalism. We exploit decompositions of complex forms into a set of simple shapes, discretization of complex images, and Dirac notation, imagining a world of "prototypes" that can be connected to obtain a fine or coarse-graining approximation of a given visual image. Visual prototypes are exchanged with auditory ones, and the information (position, size) characterizing visual prototypes is connected with the information (onset, duration, loudness, pitch range) characterizing auditory prototypes. The topic is contextualized within a philosophical debate (discreteness and comparison of apparently unrelated objects), it develops through mathematical formalism, and it leads to programming, to spark interdisciplinary thinking and ignite creativity within STEAM.

Abstract:It is conjectured that there is a converging sequence of some generalized Fibonacci ratios, given the difference between consecutive ratios, such as the Golden Ratio, $\varphi^1$, and the next golden ratio $\varphi^2$. Moreover, the graphic depiction of those ratios show some overlap with the quadratic family, and some numerical evidence suggest that everyone of those ratios in the finite set obtained, belong to at least one quadratic family, and finally a proof is presented that the converging sequence of some generalized Fibonacci ratios belong to at least one quadratic family.
