Abstract:Nanometer-sized Pb particles were embedded in Al matrices using ball-milling and melt-spinning techniques. The melting behavior of embedded Pb particles was monitored using high-temperature in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) around the equilibrium melting temperature of Pb. Pb particles in ball-milled samples formed incoherent interfaces with Al and melted at temperatures below its equilibrium melting point, whereas those with coherent interfaces produced by melt spinning could be much superheated. In both cases, analysis of XRD data indicated that melting took place when the root-mean-square displacement of Pb atoms reached about 10% of their nearest-neighbor atomic distance, suggesting the applicability of the Lindemann melting criterion to nanocrystals. The atomic vibration amplitudes and characteristic Debye temperature of the embedded Pb particles have also been deduced from XRD data and found to vary with their interfacial structures, which is suggested to be the intrinsic reason for the influence of interface on melting.

Abstract:Pb nanoparticles embedded in an Al matrix were prepared by ball milling and the internal friction behavior associated with the melting of Pb nanoparticles was studied by means of dynamic mechanical analyzer. The height H of internal friction peak was found to be dependent on the frequencies and heating rates, which indicates a first-order phase transition of Pb melting. The internal friction behavior of Pb nanoparticles is discussed with respect to the surface melting.

Abstract:In this work we report, for the first time, an experimental observation of a superheating phenomenon in metal thin films. By means of cold rolling, Pb thin films of about 20 nm thick were sandwiched by Al layers, and between them semicoherent epitaxial Pb/Al interfaces were formed. In situ x-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the confined Pb thin films could be superheated for at least 6 degrees C. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that such a substantial superheating in the confined two-dimensional thin films may originate from suppression of growth of the molten droplets by the epitaxial Al/Pb/Al confinement, instead of suppression of melt nucleation for the confined particle superheating.

Abstract:Transient heat transfer during melting of graphene-based composite PCMs heated from below was investigated experimentally. Composite PCMs filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were prepared at various loadings up to 3% by weight. The thermal conductivity, dynamic viscosity and latent heat of fusion of the composite PCMs were measured. A variety of boundary temperatures were also adopted to vary the intensity of natural convection. It was shown that when the boundary temperature is 55°C, melting is accelerated by 8% at the highest loading of 3wt.% GNPs due to the doubled thermal conductivity of the composite PCM as compared to that of the base PCM. Increasing the boundary temperature leads to more intensive natural convection that in turn slows down melting because the contribution by natural convection is significantly suppressed by the dramatically grown dynamic viscosity, e.g., 10-fold increase at the loading of 3wt.%. The melting rate is determined by competition between the enhanced heat conduction and deteriorated natural convection. In addition, both the melt fraction and heat transfer were correlated to dimensionless groupings that govern this problem. Universal correlations that are valid for the entire ranges of the parameters investigated were proposed with an uncertainty below 20%.
Solid−Liquid Interfacial Energy and Melting Properties of Nickel under Pressure from Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:We carried out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the quantum-corrected Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) potential to compute the thermal equation of state (EOS), the solid-liquid interfacial energy, and inciting properties of nickel. We simulate the melting with two methods, the hysteresis (one-phase) approach and the solid-liquid coexistence (two-phase) approach. These methods strongly reduced the overheating, and their results are in the close proximity over a large range of pressure. The melting temperature at ambient pressure is in accordance with the diamond anvil cell (DAC) experiment values. With a superheating and undercooling method, solid-liquid interfacial energy as a function of pressure is exhibited. Moreover, the thermal EOS has been investigated, and the linear thermal expansivity as a function of temperature has also been obtained successfully.
Melting of Pb Clusters Without Free Surfaces

Abstract:Melting behaviors of Pb clusters without free surfaces have been studied using molecular dynamics and the Sutton-Chen (SC) potential. Two Pb clusters (Pb-N, with N= 201 and 249) are selected and each of them has been embedded in the core of an Al-4033 cubo-octahedron, but with different orientation relationship with Al coatings. For the Pb-201 cluster, where a parallel cube-cube relationship exists with the Al lattice, semicoherent interfaces can be formed and the core can be superheated up to 750 K, in comparing to the equilibrium melting point of 615+/- 10 K for bulk Pb predicted using the SC potential. On further elevating the temperature, a simultaneous melting of both the Pb core and the outer Al coating will occur. For the Pb-249 cluster without a parallel orientation relationship with Al, no effective semicoherent interface can be formed, and the core premelts at about 500 K without breaking the crystalline structure of Al shells. The melting point of the Pb inclusions can be predicted using thermodynamic relations. For different Pb-Al interfaces, two melting mechanisms exist: one is the homogeneous melting which leads to a melting point elevation and the other is the heterogeneous melting which can induce a melting point depression. Abstract:Two kinds of Pb-Al granular sample (with nanometre-sized Pb particles embedded in an Al matrix) were prepared by using melt-spinning and ball-milling techniques. The Pb particles were synthesized with similar particle sizes, about 5-30 nm in diameter, but were observed to have different Pb-Al interfaces for samples prepared using different approaches. In the melt-spun Pb-Al samples, the Pb nanoparticles were seen to have an epitaxial relationship with the Al matrix, while the Pb particles in the ball-milled sample were seen to be randomly oriented with respect to the Al matrix. The melting behaviour of the Pb particles was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the faceted Pb nanoparticles in the melt-spun sample could be superheated by about 11-40 K, whereas the irregularly shaped Pb particles in the ball-milled sample melted about 13 K below its equilibrium point. We suggest that different interface structures, which cause variations in energy differences between solid-Pb-solid-Al and liquid-Pb-solid-Al interfaces, are responsible for the different melting behaviour of Pb nanoparticles.

Abstract:The role of grain-boundary (GB) in the melting for Sigma=5 bicrystals of B2 NiAl is investigated by molecular-dynamics simulation. The thermodynamic properties of the boundary are monitored over a wide temperature range including the thermodynamic melting point T-m which is determined by using a many-body potential fitted to NiAl. A thermal disorder transition in the GB region occurs well below the melting point. Our results indicate that such a transition is a continuous process and there is no evidence of premelting, which is entirely in accord with experimental results and theoretical prediction. Moreover, we also find that the superheated temperature range of this intermetallic alloy is much wider than that of some elemental metals.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations for Melting of Palladium Nanoclusters and Nanowires

Abstract:We present results from a molecular dynamics simulation study of a Pd cluster and a nanowire, both of 2.3 nm diameter, using the Sutton_Chen manybody potential function. Changes in thermodynamic and structural properties of these two systems during heating were studied. We found that the melting temperature of the Pd nanowire of 1200 K is lower than the simulated bulk value (1760 K) but higher than that of the cluster at 1090 K. Melting behaviors were characterized by a number of thermodynamic, structural and dynamical parameters. Surface pre-melting at much lower temperatures than the near first order transition temperatures noted above was observed in both Pd systems. The surface premelting temperature range was higher for the nanowire than for the cluster. Surface melting in nanowires manifests itself as large amplitude vibrations followed by free movement of atoms in the plane perpendicular to the nanowire axis, with axial movement arising at temperatures closer to the transition temperature. Increase in nanowire diameter as well as shape change are seen to result from this axial mixing. Atomic distributions indicated that the nanowire could undergo mechanical instabilities and break upon heating. Bond order parameters indicated that the nanocluster retained the initial fcc structure, whereas, the nanowire tended towards the hcp structure. Simple melting theories could not explain the actual depression of the melting point in both systems.

Abstract:A new immersed boundary method is proposed for the numerical simulation of the melting of solid particles in its own liquid at a high temperature. The main feature of the new method is the use of the modified direct-forcing immersed boundary method for the solution of the flow field and the sharp-interface immersed boundary method for the temperature field. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated via three problems: the sedimentation of a non-melting particle, the melting of a fixed particle under mixed thermal convection, and the sedimentation of a melting particle. The method is then applied to the investigation of the effects of various parameters, the particle interactions and the particle shape on the particle melting time. A correlation for the melting time of a circular particle in forced thermal convection is established as a function of the Reynolds, Prandtl, and Stefan numbers. The melting time of a particle in mixed thermal convection first increases and then decreases, as the Grashof number increases. The effects of the particle interactions on the melting time are complicated due to the natural convection between two particles. The sufficiently strong natural convection can even render the downstream particle melt faster than the single particle. For the same particle area, the elliptic particle with the aspect ratio being around 1.4 melts most slowly.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part B Fundamentals

Abstract:In this article, a two-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model, utilizing enthalpy as a basis, has been constructed to explore the melting behavior of aluminum particles in the micron size range. The study investigates the impacts of several key factors such as particle size, Rayleigh number, Stefan number, and porosity on temperature distribution, liquid fraction, solid-liquid interface, and melting end time. The findings demonstrate that an increase in particle size stimulates the melting process, with a weakened effect observed as particle size continues to increase. Rayleigh number has a significant effect on natural convection and heat transfer, promoting the development of these processes. Additionally, Stefan number presents a noticeable impact on the melting process, with a more apparent effect in the range of low Stefan numbers. Finally, the increase of porosity proves to be a compelling factor in the promotion of the melting process.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated superheating and melting behaviors of homogeneous crystals, coated particles and confined ultra-thin films. Upon heating, melting is found to occur homogeneously and is initiated by liquid nuclei. Defect generation and subsequent accumulation due to the local lattice instability within a hot crystal can induce those liquid embryos. For those confined fine particles or thin films, size-dependent superheating can be predicted based on the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation.
Quantum molecular dynamics simulations of lithium melting using Z-method

Abstract:We performed first-principles molecular dynamics calculations for lithium using the projector augmented waves method and the generalized gradient approximation as exchange-correlation energy. The melting curve of lithium was computed using the \textit{Z}-method technique for pressures up to 30 GPa, which agrees well with the experimental and two-phase simulated results. The change of the melting line slope from positive to negative was predicted by the characteristic shape inversion of the \textit{Z} curve at about 8.2 GPa. Through analyzing the static properties, we conclude that no liquid-liquid phase transition accompanies the occurrence of the melting line maximum, which is caused by the higher compressibility of the liquid phase compared to the solid phase. In addition, we systematically studied the dynamic and optical properties of lithium near melting curve at critical superheating and melting temperatures. It was suggested that spectra difference at critical superheating and melting temperature may be able to diagnose the homogeneous melting.

Abstract:Nanometer-sized In, Sn, Bi, Cd, and Pb particles were homogeneously embedded in an Al matrix through ball milling of powder mixtures of pure immiscible elements. The melting and freezing behavior of the embedded nanoparticles were systematically investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. It was observed that the melting temperature as well as the latent heat of fusion of the embedded particles decreased significantly relative to their bulk values. Both the melting point depression and heat of fusion reduction are inversely proportional to the size of the embedded particles. The melting behavior is interpreted using a thermodynamic model and found to depend not only on the particle size but also on the structure and excess enthalpy of the particle/matrix interface. Solidification of the nanoparticles, presumably via heterogeneous solid nucleation at the Al/particle interfaces, exhibited significant undercooling. The degree of undercooling increased with decreasing particle size. A thermodynamic analysis based on the classical nucleation theory indicates that the large undercoolings observed result from the energy barrier for solid nucleation. The effect of particle size on undercooling is attributed to the size dependence of the melting point.

Abstract:Nanometer-sized In particles (5−45 nm) embedded in the Al matrix were prepared by using melt-spinning and ball-milling techniques. Different crystallographic orientationships between In nanoparticles and the Al matrix were constructed by these two approaches. Melting behavior of the In particles were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the epitaxially oriented In nanoparticles (with the Al matrix) in the melt-spun sample were superheated to about 0−38 °C, whereas the randomly oriented In particles in the ball-milled sample melted below its equilibrium melting point by about 0−22 °C. We suggest that the melting temperature of In nanoparticles can be either enhanced or depressed, depending on the epitaxy between In and the Al matrix.

Abstract:The melting behavior of Ni3Al alloys in one, two and three dimensions were studied by adopting molecular dynamics simulations with many-body interatomic potentials. The results of simulation show that melting temperatures of the Ni3Al nanowires and nanofilms rise with the increase of the size of nanostructures to a saturation value, and finally reach a proximate melting temperature of bulk Ni3Al. The results also reveal that the nanowires and nanofilms begin to melt at the surface, and then it rapidly ex tends to the interior of the nanostructures as the temperature increase. The large surface to-volume ratio of the nanowires and nanofilms may account for the decreased melting temperature observed in the present simulations.

Abstract:Lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) alloys, as a superconducting material, have been widely studied at their superconducting transition temperatures and the critical magnetic fields for different composition ratios. Most of experimental studies focused on the stable ε phase formed at high temperatures, but less on the Pb-Bi alloys grown at low temperatures. So far, the structural and superconducting properties of the low-temperature Pb-Bi phases are far from good understanding. Here, we report our investigation of structural and superconducting properties of a low-temperature phase of Pb-Bi alloy. The Pb-Bi alloy films with a nominal thickness of about 6 nm are prepared by co-depositing Bi and Pb on Bi(111)/Si(111)-(7 × 7) substrates at a low temperature of 100 K followed by annealing at a treatment of 200 K for 2 h. The structural and superconducting properties of the Pb-Bi alloy films are characterized in situ by using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). It is observed that the spatially separated phases of nearly pure Bi(111) domains and Pb1–xBix alloy domains are formed in the films, where these phases can be identified by their distinct differences in the atomic structure and the distributions of step heights in the atomically resolved STM images, as well as by their distinguished STS spectra. The Pb1–xBix alloy phase presents the structure of Pb(111), in which about x ≈ 0.1 Bi is substituted for Pb. The STS spectra show that the Pb1–xBix alloy phase is superconducting, with a transition temperature Tc = 7.77 K derived from the variable-temperature measurements. This transition temperature is higher than that in pure Pb film (6.0–6.5 K), which can be well explained by the Mattias rules, with considering the fact that the average number of valance electrons increases after Bi atoms with five valance-electrons have been substituted for Pb atoms with four valance-electrons. The analysis shows that the ratio \begin{document}$ 2\Delta (0)/{k_{\rm{B}}}{T_{\rm{C}}}$\end{document} is about 4.94 with the superconducting gap \begin{document}$ \varDelta (0) = 1.66$\end{document} meV at 0 K, indicating that the Pb1–xBix alloy is a strongly-coupled superconductor. The non-superconducting Bi(111) and the superconducting Pb1–xBix alloy domains form an in-plane superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (S-N-S) Josephson junction. The proximity effect in the Bi(111) domains is measured at different N-S junctions, which suggests that the lateral superconducting penetration length in Bi(111) might be affected by the area of the quasi-two-dimensional interface. The superconducting gap in the Bi(111) region with a narrow width of 23 nm in an S-N-S Josephson junction is found to be greatly enhanced due to the existence of multiple Andreev reflections. Since Bi can host potential topological properties, the lateral Bi(111)-Pb1–xBix heterostructures, because of the existing proximity effect, could have potential applications in exploring the novel topological and superconducting phenomena.
