Abstract:Yanda Li was born in October 1936 in Dongguan,Guangdong,China.His childhood was in war time.He had to move with his parents across several counties and cities,but he managed to accomplish his high-school study in Guangzhou(Fig.1).He showed deep interest in physics in high school and was admitted to the Depart-ment of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1954.Because of his excellent performance in college study,he joined the faculty in 1958 before he finished his college study in 1959.Throughout the 60 years from his joining the faculty to his retirement in 2018,Prof.Li has pioneered in a broad range of academic fields and is a founder of several new research fields in Tsinghua University.

The first thoracic enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) center in ChinaSituated on the bank of the scenic West Lake, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University dates back to 1947 and is now 72 years old.The Department of Thoracic & Cardiac Surgery was established not long after the hospital opened its doors, and was among the first such departments in China.Under the first director, Prof. Huayu Shi, a famous specialist of thoracic surgery and a founder of the discipline in China, the department enjoyed a glorious history.The year of 2009 was a watershed year for the Department of Thoracic & Cardiac Surgery, as it was split into the Department of General Thoracic Surgery and the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery."At that time, most surgeons wanted to go to the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, and few people wanted stay at the Department of General Thoracic Surgery."Jian Hu says, going on to explain his greater interest and suitability for tumor therapy and the better opportunity offered by the Department of General Thoracic Surgery.From this time onwards, the department has been his battlefield in the fight

Abstract:Professor Lina Zhang (1940–2020), born in Guangze, Fujian, China, was a distinguished expert in polymer chemistry and physics both domestic and international, served as a prestigious faculty member of Wuhan University, and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In 2011, she won the Anselm Payne Award from the American Chemical Society, and a year later in 2012, the top award of the National Natural Science Prize of China. She was appointed Associated Editor of ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, as well as Editorial board member of Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Cellulose, and so on. In 2016, the Chemistry World journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry highlighted "Lina Zhang reflects on five decades as part of China's green chemistry vanguard."

Abstract:Professor Lihui Lang is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of metal forming technology. He was deputy director of Youth Work Committee of China Society for Technology of Plasticity, editorial board members of many scientific journals and chair of many international conferences. During his more than 20 years’ research in theories, technologies and equipment in hydroforming and powder hot isostatic pressing field, he has published about 10 textbooks and monographs, more than 300 academic papers, obtained more than 40 authorized invention patents, and cultivated nearly 100 doctoral and master students. Based on these contributions, he won international and national awards 3 times, including the Thomas Stephen Group Prize and second prize of Chinese National Award for Technological Inventions.

Abstract:Prof. Xiyan Lu will always be remembered for his development of organic reactions under phosphine or palladium catalysis, especially for phosphine-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloadditions of electron-deficient allenes or alkynes with electrophiles such as electron-deficient alkenes and imines, known as Lu's [3 + 2] reaction. In addition to contributing to science, Prof. Lu left his mark as an educator by training the next generations of chemists and passing his work ethic on to his collaborators.

Abstract:Professor Hongye Fan (1942-2020) was a distinguished historian, scholar, and editor in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing who helped lay the foundation for the historical studies of science in modern China with his writings, editing work on primary sources, and organizational efforts. Trained in biology he published historical studies on a wide-range of topics, including Jesuit missionaries in China, the May Fourth movement, Science Society of China, Lysenkoism, and the CAS. His major editorial achievements included the journal Yuanshi ziliao yu yanjiu (Materials and Studies on CAS History), the 24-volume Zhu Kezhen quanji (The Complete Works of Coching Chu), a 54-volume Chinese scientists' oral histories book series, and a national project to document the lives and careers of senior Chinese scientists. He also mentored a new generation of historians of science in modern China.

Abstract:Editorial Super-resolution microscopy illuminated the hazy molecular world like a beacon, bringing significant changes to the fields of biology, optics and chemistry. Eric Betzig, who shared the 2014 Nobel Prize of Chemistry with Stefan Hell and William Moerner, is one of the inventors of this fantastic scientific tool. Working originally on near field optics, Dr. Betzig made a series of stunning achievements at Bell Labs before turning 35. Yet he quit, seemingly at the top of his game, to become a hands-on dad and joined the machinery business. Eventually, he missed science so much that he made a comeback and wowed everyone instantly with his work. He defies the conventional definition of “persistence” by demonstrating an alternative route to success. Plain-speaking and earnest, Dr. Betzig is sometimes honest to almost a fault, and always believes in doing practical things. He puts his heart and soul into everything he does, because he says he wants to truly live rather than simply pass through life. In science work, he is meticulous, yet he embraces risks and believes they can bring the best out of oneself. In life, he is a loving father who is always ready to take time from his busy research work to take his children to school or tennis lessons, and a caring teacher who never forgets to command the hard work of his postdocs. Abstract:It’s grave news that Yang Shuzi died of illness on November 4, 2022. It’s a great loss to the scientific and educational circles in China. As a scientist, academician, president and educator, Yang Shuzi made outstanding contributions to the country, the nation and the people. Especially in the field of cultural quality education, as a pioneer, he made outstanding contributions after nearly 30 years of hard work. There’re such main contributions as below. The concept of “cultural quality education” with integration of science education and humanistic education as the core enriched the national idea of higher education; promoting cultural quality education into university classrooms changed the curriculum structure and teaching system of China higher education; establishing the national cultural quality education exchange platform promoted the discussion of university education methods; he carried forward Chinese poetry on campus, which spread traditional culture; the self-created brand of Yang Shuzi’s humanistic lectures set an example.
