Abstract:At the end of the 17th century, the collection was established through the acquisition of Leiden instrumentmaker Musschenbroek's collection. Its aim was to demonstrate physical phenomena. Until the end of the 18th century, the collection was used and extended by a number of professors from various university departments in teaching mechanics, hydrostatics, optics and electrostatics. The foundation of the Institute for Mathematics and Physics in 1817 and the appointment of Christian Ludwig Gerling to the position of Professor for Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy strengthened the subject considerably. Gerling extended the collection mainly with devices for geodesy and astronomy, with more instruments being added in the time up to the middle of the 20th century. Today, the collection allows an insight into the history of scientific instruments as witnesses of the past.

Abstract:We outline the institutional history and highlight aspects of the scientific history of the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society, successor to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, from its founding in 1911 until about the turn of the 21st century. Established as one of the first two Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes, the Institute began as a much-awaited remedy for what prominent German chemists warned was the waning of Germany's scientific and technological superiority relative to the United States and to other European nations. The history of the Institute has largely paralleled that of 20th century Germany. It spearheaded the research and development of chemical weapons during World War I, then experienced a "golden era" during the 1920s and early 1930s, in spite of financial hardships. Under the National Socialists it suffered a purge of its scientific staff and a diversion of its research into the service of the new regime, accompanied by a breakdown in its international relations. In the immediate aftermath of World War II it suffered crippling material losses, from which it recovered slowly in the postwar era. In 1952, the Institute took the name of its founding director and the following year joined the fledgling Max Planck Society, successor to the Kaiser Wilhelm Society. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Institute supported diverse research into the structure of matter and electron microscopy in its geographically isolated and politically precarious location in West Berlin. In subsequent decades, as Berlin benefited from the policies of détente and later glasnost and the Max Planck Society continued to reassess its preferred model of a research institute, the FHI reorganized around a board of coequal scientific directors and renewed its focus on the investigation of elementary processes on surfaces and interfaces, topics of research that had been central to the work of Fritz Haber and the first "golden era" of the Institute. Throughout its one-hundred-year history, the Institute's pace-setting research has been shaped by dozens of distinguished scientists, among them seven Nobel laureates. Here we highlight the contributions made at the Institute to the fields of gas-phase kinetics and dynamics, early quantum physics, colloid chemistry, electron microscopy, and surface chemistry, and we give an account of the key role the Institute played in implementing the Berlin Electron Synchrotron (BESSY I and II). Current research at the Institute in surface science and catalysis as well as molecular physics and spectroscopy is exemplified in this issue [Angew. Chem. 2011, 123, 10242; Angew. Chem. Int. Abstract:Mechanics, Dijksterhuis said, should be taught in a mathematical way; for him mechanics was the mathematization of the basic physical concepts. And he characterized the Scientific Revolution as the mechanization of the world picture, in which, again, mathematization played the central role. His position in the debate about the “two cultures” can be seen in the same light: he argued that, fundamentally, the scientific method is as applicable to the arts as to the natural sciences; in both, generalization and mathematization should be the governing notions. This book is the result of extensive research: van Berkel consulted numerous archives, personal as well as institutional. His style is professional throughout, and the beginning and the end of the book are especially well written. Abstract:The purpose of the present chapter is to describe briefly an example of one fundamentally important root of research and development: the creation and early development of its venue, the research laboratory. As Frank James notes in his introduction to this volume, the dictionary definition of the laboratory is misleading. The case of the Jefferson Physical Laboratory at Harvard University in the late nineteenth century is one example of why this is so. The building, home to the university’s physics department, was conceived with a mixture of motives; the product was a facility at which pre-eminent physical research would have profound effects on the science and technology of the twentieth century.1

Abstract:The Austrian Museum of Art and Industry, the first of its kind on the European continent, gave equal status to domestic crafts from the provinces and the cosmopolitan luxuries of the Habsburg dynasty. The museum was thus assigned the task of forging a cohesive imperial identity, becoming the tool with which Austria-Hungary could assert itself as an effective imperial power, both locally and globally. By considering three significant exhibitions in the first 50 years of the museum’s history — the Vienna World’s Fair in 1873, the exhibition of Austrian Cottage Industry and Folk Art in 1905, and the exhibition that accompanied the 9th International Housing Conference in 1910 — this article investigates Austria’s transition from the classic model of mid-nineteenth-century imperialism to a uniquely pan-regional empire focused on notions of domesticity and cultural preservation, turning ultimately to the Socialist concerns that would form the basis of the post-imperial Austrian state.

Abstract:In a culture of science parks and the green field sites of sunrise industries, it seems apt to consider laboratories’ pastoral settings. Scholarly pastoralism has a complex history. Historians have well charted the shift from the urban, urbane scholars of medieval universities to the courtly, courteous humanists of the Renaissance campagna (Le Goff, 1993: 161–6); analysed the imagery of solitude in the architecture of the astronomical revolution and in the sociability of early modern natural philosophy (Hannaway, 1986; Shapin, 1991); and pointed to the well-populated retreats where savants secluded themselves during the Terror (Outram, 1983). The tell-tale term ‘campus’ beloved of academic planners is, in its scholarly sense, a relatively recent, eighteenth-century, coinage (Turner, 1984: 21). The putatively tranquil and remote sites of contemporary physics include such places as the Marshall Islands atoll stocked with hydrophones, radar and sensors where missile performance has been tested by US military scientists since the early 1960s (Mackenzie, 1990: 347–8). Sharon Traweek observes that ‘almost all of the high energy physics national laboratories in the United States... have lovely settings‘. The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center incorporates ‘a carefully landscaped approximation of the surrounding natural environment.... By creating an English green lawn in an environment of golden dry savannahs’, she claims, ‘the lab demonstrates the authority of its own vision of nature’ (Traweek, 1988: 18–24).

Abstract:Dedicated to the centenary of the Ioffe Institute, the article contains the shortest review of scientific achievements of the theorists of the institute during this time. We concentrate mainly on research in the field of elementary particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear theory and atoms. To obtain very important scientific results became possible because outstanding theoreticians worked at this Institute. The high level of research persisted in spite of several mass moves of theorists - then to Kharkov, then to Moscow, then abroad. The author can testify to the atmosphere that reigned in the FTI in person, since he works at this institute since 1958. The article deals not only with research activity, but also with the famous physics schools and their outstanding cultural programs. We present also examples of extraordinary successful activity of theorists far beyond the field of their narrow specialization.

Abstract:Since 1905, Albert Einstein's ''miraculous year'', modern physics has advanced explosively. In 2005, the World Year of Physics, a session at the SAA Annual meeting discusses three institutional initiatives--Einstein's collected papers, an international geophysical program, and a research laboratory--to examine how physics and physicists are documented and how that documentation is being collected, preserved, and used. This paper provides a brief introduction to the research laboratory (SLAC), discusses the origins of the SLAC Archives and History Office, its present-day operations, and the present and future challenges it faces in attempting to preserve an accurate historical record of SLAC's activities.
