Abstract:There are different influences in Environmental Latin-American History. From the historical demography to anthropology, this discipline has been benefit from Cook and Borah’s contributions to Carl Sauer’s. In this article, my contribution consists in broading the spectrum towards the European influence and particularly to the so-called Annales School. While it is true that this movement had a strong influence in Latin-American History, in contrast, in Environment Historians, such influence has not been comparable to quantity history or the history of prices. My purpose is to analyze the roots of this influence in Latin America, their scope and limits.

Abstract:In the 1970s,Fernand Braudel's total history suffered more and more criticism,and there saw a turn in the Western historiography.Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie,who is a French historian and part of the Annales School,founded the movement of the New History. The new historical movement can be associated with historical anthropology,history of mentalities and microhistory.The article focuses on Le Roy Ladurie' best-known work Montaillou,and reveals the relations between the Annales School and the turn of the Western historiography.

Abstract:Examining and scrutinizing historiographical paradigms are pivotal for the epistemology of historical studies, as fluctuations in the scientific discourse shape and echo through diverse interpretations within this intellectual domain. Hence, this study sought to dissect the intricate interplay between the positivist and Annales schools. This investigation is warranted by its potential to broaden the spectrum of understanding within historical epistemology, facilitated by exhaustive literature reviews and historiographical analyses. Notably, this study challenges the conventional dichotomy that portrays these two schools of thought as inherently antagonistic. The paper posits the following research query to elucidate this nuanced landscape: "To what degree do elements of synergy, antagonism, and rivalry manifest between the Annales school and the positivist school?" The overarching aim of this article was to unpack these multifaceted interactions using a qualitative exploratory approach, an extensive bibliography, and methodological and theoretical standards outlined in the literature by various scholars. A meticulous analysis was undertaken to gain relevant insights contributing to a coherent argument that addresses the central research question.

Abstract:Abstract The book under review draws on the author’s doctoral thesis submitted to Ghent University, Belgium. Its subject is the so-called Anonymous Syriac Chronicle of 1234 , a universal chronicle which covers the history from Creation until its author’s lifetime. The author of the chronicle is unknown today. He belonged to the Syriac Orthodox tradition and lived probably in Northern Mesopotamia. He wrote in Syriac, the Aramaic dialect of the ancient city of Edessa (today’s Şanlıurfa in southeastern Turkey). At first, the chronicle was completed in 1204 C.E. It was subsequently continued until the campaign of Sultan Malik al-Kāmil against his brother Malik al-Ashraf in 1234 C.E. (17).

Abstract:Alan Baker, who died on the 4th of February of this year, was born in England on the 19th of August 1939. In 1965 he defended his doctoral dissertation titled ‘Some Aspects of Diophantine Approximation’ at Trinity College Cambridge under the guidance of Harold Davenport. It is a very unusual fact that eight of his papers, including [1], which is discussed in the next section, had appeared in print before he submitted his doctoral dissertation. Baker was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Nice. Other honors he received are detailed in the Article-in-a-Box in this issue.In the present text, we will discuss his paper [1] and the ‘Baker theory of linear forms in logarithms’, which started with the series of four papers [2, 3, 4, 5] published in the British journal Mathematika. This new theory was an impressive breakthrough in the field of Diophantine approximation and we will briefly present some of its applications. For precise references to original papers, including those mentioned in the next sections, the reader is directed to the monographs [6, 7, 8, 9].

Abstract:Alan Baker, Fields Medallist, died on 4th February 2018 in Cambridge England after a severe stroke a few days earlier. In 1970 he was awarded the Fields Medal at the International Congress in Nice on the basis of his outstanding work on linear forms in logarithms and its consequences. Since then he received many honours including the prestigious Adams Prize of Cambridge University, the election to the Royal Society (1973) and the Academia Europaea; and he was made an honorary fellow of University College London, a foreign fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, a foreign fellow of the National Academy of Sciences India, an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In this article we survey Alan Baker's achievements.

Abstract:The history of archives seeks to understand archives as subjects of history, not just as its sources. The field has opened up new ways of thinking about major historical trends: the rise of the nation state, the development of public and private spheres, the growth of global institutions, and the ever-increasing emphasis on data in our information-rich “knowledge economy.” Archives are crucial sites for the exercise of political power as well as profoundly important resources for defining community identity. The work that archives do emerges from the tension between these functions, as well as the gaps between archival ambitions (information mastery, objectivity) and archival realities (partiality, anxiety, failures of access).

The in/visible women: Mariangela Ardinghelli and the circulation of knowledge between Paris and Naples in the eighteenth century

Abstract:Mariangela Ardinghelli (1730-1825) is remembered as the Italian translator of two texts by the Newtonian physiologist Stephen Hales, Haemastaticks and Vegetable Staticks. This essay shows that her role in the Republic of Letters was by no means limited to such work. At a time of increasing interest in the natural history of the areas around Naples, she became a reliable cultural mediator for French travelers and naturalists. She also acted as an informal foreign correspondent for the Paris Academy of Sciences, connecting scientific communities in Naples and France. Unlike other learned women of the time, Ardinghelli was neither an aristocrat nor a member of the ascendant middle class. The essay discusses the strategies she devised to build her authority and her choice of anonymity at the apex of her popularity, when she translated scientific texts by contemporary celebrities such as the abbé Nollet and the comte de Buffon. It argues that, in spite of Ardinghelli's historical invisibility, for her contemporaries she never became an "invisible assistant": she constructed layers of selective visibility that allowed her authorship to be identified by specific audiences, while protecting herself from social isolation or derision.

Abstract:The purpose of this note is to explain what is "analytical history", a modular and testable analysis of historical events introduced in a book published in 2002 (Roehner and Syme 2002). Broadly speaking, it is a comparative methodology for the analysis of historical events. Comparison is the keystone and hallmark of science. For instance, the extrasolar planets are crucial for understanding our own solar system. Until their discovery, astronomers could observe only one instance. Single instances can be described but they cannot be understood in a testable way. In other words, if one accepts that, as many historians say, "historical events are unique", then no testable understanding can be developed.

Abstract:20. yüzyılın başlarında Fransa’da ortaya çıkan Annales hareketi, o döneme kadar tarih yazıcılığına egemen olan siyasî tarih yerine güçlü bir alternatif olarak toplumu merkeze alan, disiplinlerarası bakış açısına sahip ve sorun odaklı tarih anlayışını ikame etmeye çalışmıştır. Annales yaklaşımında tarih; coğrafi, kronolojik, ekonomik, toplumsal ve dinî çerçeveler üzerinden ve zihniyet ve yapılara da yer vererek kurgulanır. Siyer yazıcılığı, klasikten günümüze hâkim yönelim olarak olay anlatısı üzerine kurulmuştur. Bununla birlikte bu alanda yeni arayışlar göze çarpmakta, konu belirleme ve yazım usullerinde değişime giden örneklere rastlanmaktadır. Çağdaş siyer yazıcılığı, kaynak itibariyle klasik dönemde telif edilen eserlerdeki rivâyetlere dayanmaktadır. Bu kaynaklarda bulunan merviyatın Annalesçi yaklaşımların uygulanmasına imkan tanıyıp tanımadığını tespitte Annales prensiplerinin tespiti ve siyer kaynaklarının bu prensipler açısından incelenmesi önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışma, siyerde konu ve sunuş bakımından yeni açılımların imkanını, Annales Okulu’nun yaklaşımları üzerinden irdelemektedir.
The Peculiar Destiny of Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz (May 1705 -- March 1706)

Abstract:During the querelle des infiniment petits, Leibniz wrote several texts to justify using Differential calculus among Parisian savants. However, only three were published. Among these publications, ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz'' had a peculiar destiny. Although we are aware of the manuscript (Gotha FB A 448--449, Bl. 41--42), it is only recently that we have identified a copy of its impression in the British Library catalogue. This copy was printed in 1706 together with writings by other mathematicians united in the defence of the new calculus -- Joseph Saurin, Jacob Hermann and the Bernoulli brothers. Recently published epistolary exchanges indicate that Jean-Paul Bignon, at the time director of the Royal Academy of Sciences, in order to calm down the institution, had prohibited this publication and confiscated the prints.This article examine the epistemological and institutional issues at stake in ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz''.

The life experience included an M.A. degree at Purdue in American Studies (1970–72), where I hung out around the budding feminist movement, as I had as an undergraduate at South Dakota State University (1966–70).
