Abstract:Physics is an exact science and studies the quantitative regularities of natural phenomena at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels. The term "physics" first appears in the works of Aristotle in antiquity. In the early days, the terms "physics" and "philosophy" (natural) were used as synonyms, as both were intended to explain the laws of the universe. However, as a result of the scientific revolution, physics began to take shape as a separate field of science in the 16th century. A [1-50] reference was used in writing the review article.

Abstract:Mindful of a stated <i>Project 2061</i> goal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, emphasizing that "scientific literacy includes seeing the scientific endeavor in the light of cultural and intellectual history," and in the continuing spirit of narrowing the gap between the "two cultures" by enhancing STEAM awareness and education, this essay illustrates, quite literally through well-known works of Western art, the striking parallels between fundamental themes in physics and the visual arts through history. These connections include: the identification of microcosm–macrocosm analogies in prehistoric proto-science; the beginning of the appreciation in pre-classical antiquity of the lawfulness of nature under the aegis of a Divine Lawgiver; the rise of rationalism and the first theories of the architecture of matter during the so-called "Greek miracle"; the overlapping role of theology's "handmaiden" during the emblematic medieval Age of Faith; Renaissance renovations and the triumph of the "mechanical universe" as the capstone of the scientific revolution in the early modern period; the influence on physics of the Romantic notion of an underlying unity in all of nature, and the increasing abstraction in both art and physics during the nineteenth century; and, finally, the parallels between twentieth-century art and the physics of relativity and quantum theory, concluding with examples from modern cosmology.

Abstract:Science educators are increasingly using a historical approach to pedagogy as a way to enable students to understand the process of the construction of science in a more contextualized manner. Considering the meaning of context in a broader sense, this article has two objectives. First, it aims to explore how physics lessons using a Cultural History of Science approach allowed the development of activities that encouraged students to have discussions about science where their own socio-cultural context was considered, referring to Brazilian scientific production. Second, the article to investigate which understandings about scientific practices could be developed by students from in-class discussions inspired by the Cultural History of Science approach focusing on a historical and students' own social contexts. The historical episode selected to be introduced in their physics lessons was the development of the Leiden jar in Europe, in the eighteenth century, focusing on the quotidian practices and habits that enabled the construction and use of this artifact. The lessons developed from the Cultural History approach seemed to allow the students to understand that science was developed by many different social actors, in sites that exceed the laboratory and by actions performed in various dimensions. The findings suggest that this approach in science teaching can be a strategy to historically contextualize the development of science while allowing students to reflect about the scientific production in their social context.

The revolution in physics of the early Nineteenth century revisited in the context of science-and-society interaction

Abstract:The radical changes in the concepts and approach in Physics at the turn of the Nineteenth century were so deep, that is acknowledged as a revolution. However, in 1970 Thomas Kuhn's careful reconstruction of the researches on the black body problem, the concept itself of the revolution seemed to vanish in his diluted discussion of every details. In the present paper, after an examination of the limitations of Kuhn's response to his critics, I put forward the idea, although it is not new, that these changes in Physics cannot be reduced to a point-like event, but happened instead through multiple successive (and even contradictory) changes in the course of decades. Such as the old quantum hypothesis, wave mechanics, orthodox quantum mechanics. In fact, the innovative perspectives started in the 1980s have been considered as a third quantum revolution. My basic argument is that these changes, in order to be really understood, must be interpreted not as mere specific changes in Physics, but framed in the context of the deep social, cultural, and economic changes during those turbulent years. Abstract:It is known that Einstein's conceptual base for his theory of relativity was the philosophy formulated by Immanuel Kant. Things appear differently to observers in different frames. However, Kant's Ding-an-Sich leads to the existence of the absolute reference frame which is not acceptable in Einstein's theory. It is possible to avoid this conflict using the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism where two different views can co-exist in harmony. This is not enough to explain Einstein's discovery of the mass-energy relation. The energy-momentum relations for slow and ultra-fast particles take different forms. Einstein was able to synthesize these two formulas to create his energy-mass relation. Indeed, this is what Hegelianism is about in physics. Isaac Newton synthesized open orbits for comets and closed orbits for planets to create his second law of motion. Maxwell combined electricity and magnetism to create his four equations to the present-day wireless world. In order to synthesize wave and particle views of matter, Heisenberg formulated his uncertainty principle. Relativity and quantum mechanics are the two greatest theories formulated in the 20th Century. Efforts to synthesize these two theories are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In the 60s of the last century the few courses of History of physics in Physics degree were held by scholars who, apart from a few exceptions, did not have a specific research background in the field. Some activities, books, social movements in the civil society allowed in the 70's the entry, among Physics courses, of teachings in History of physics held by scholars specifically trained for that job since their degree. A second change happened in the 90s when many difficulties forced physicists to allocate fewer and fewer resources to the History of their discipline. I'll outline the features of the two periods and the efforts of Historians to find a proper space in Physics departments.

Abstract:Plutarchus, circa 100 AD, in his early book on "astrophysics" --in which he exposed, in a sense, a general theory of gravitation-- wrote the noticeable passage: <<The Moon gets the guarantee of not falling down just from its motion and from the dash associated with its revolution, exactly as stones in slings cannot fall due to their circular whirling motion; in fact, each thing is dragged by its mere natural motion only if it isn't deviated by something else. The Moon, therefore, is not dragged down by its weight, because its natural tendency is frustrated by its revolution. And, on the contrary, it would be really amazing if it could remain at rest always at the same place, like the Earth>>. While Posidonius (circa 135-51 BC) had written: <<Matter is endowed with a cohesion that keeps it together and against which the surrounding vacuum has no power. Indeed, the material world is supported by an immense force, and alternately contracts and expands in the vacuum following its own physical processes, now consumed by fire, now, instead, giving rise to a new creation of the cosmos>>. These two examples show how "modern" was part of the ancient Greek physics, frequently overlooked since it is sometimes known through the praiseworthy translations of scholars often competent in humanities, more than in science. Abstract:Thecultural manifold suggested in The Way and the Word by Geoffrey Lloyd and Nathan Sivin is different from the same phrase used earlier by J.Henry,D.Goddard and V.Strohmeyer.It is a new conceptual tool,which overcomes the schism between intellectual history,institutional history,and social history,and has proven value for researches in history of science in China.The members of Ren's seminar at Peking University have used it to study the intellectual,institutional,and social dimensions of the history of medicine during the Song Dynasty,the history of Qiushi(Autumn Mineral),cricket fights,acupuncture anaesthesia,modern technologies of alkali manufacture in China,the Popularization of Science Movement,the Science Division of the Propaganda Department of the CCCPC,as well as folk discoveries and inventions in contemporary China.

Abstract:This is the first of a series of papers that we intend to publish about the epistemology of fundamental physics in its current state. One of the main objectives of these papers is to improve our understanding of fundamental physics (and modern physics in particular) from an epistemological and interpretative perspective (i.e. versus formal perspective). Another main objective is to investigate and assess the merit of searching for a unified physical theory (the so-called ``theory of everything'') considering the fact that contemporary physics is a collection of theories created and developed by different individuals and groups of scientists in different eras of history reflecting different levels of scientific, philosophical and epistemological development and dealing with largely separate physical phenomena and hence such unification may mean ``stitching together'' an inhomogeneous collection of theoretical structures which may be clumsy (if not impossible) at least from an epistemological viewpoint.

Abstract:From the perspectives of current philosophy of science and sociology of science, this paper analyzes a science culture inherent in the different versions of history, Chinese, and physics textbooks in the 20th century. It claims that this sort of science culture should be reconsidered and consummated in the following aspects: with regard to the notion of science, and hypothesis should be taken as the most important parts of scientific activities. Meanwhile, it is necessary to clarify science as a sort of social institution. As for the values of science, these textbooks should clearly illustrate the negative and inherent values to students. In respect of science development, these textbooks must substitutehistory of science problems for history of science achievements or history of heroes, which emphasizes the vital role of science problems, debates and community in the process of science progress. At last, given the images of scientists, some professional virtues and qualities should be demonstrated sufficiently.

Abstract:In this article, we shall discuss what the author considers to be important in geometry and related subjects.Since the time of the Greek mathematicians, geometry has always been in the center of science.Scientists cannot resist explaining natural phenomena in terms of the language of geometry.Indeed, it is reasonable to consider geometric objects as parts of nature.Practically all elegant theorems in geometry have found applications in classical or modern physics.In order to understand the future of geometry, it is perhaps useful to review what was known in the past.Clearly what I consider to be important may not be viewed to be so by others.Also, we should always keep in mind that what is fashionable now may not be so tomorrow.A theory can be judged to be successful only if its consequences help us understand the basic structure or the beauty of geometry.While we shall divide the subject into several categories, the division is artificial, as the development of each section depends on other sections heavily.

Abstract:The author chooses the five most important Chinese publications directly related to the history of science.After reading all the issues since Jan.2000,he picks some treatises that focus on contemporary issues and classifies them into six categories,which are Chinese-medicine,science systems and policies in modern China,the spread of science,scientism,the Needham Issue and theories on the history of science.Blending the controversies in these six aspects,some cultural background,and the essence of dozens of treatises,the author thoroughly reviews the studies of the history of science in China since 2000.This article also covers the changes in Chinese scholars' concern over the history of science in recent years.

Abstract:During recent collaboration with colleagues to revise our institution's general-education curriculum, I encountered many perceptions of what we mean by the Natural Sciences. I was surprised to find that perceptions of scientific pedagogy varied significantly among the scientific disciplines, especially concerning issues of philosophy of science and epistemology, manifested in the approaches to teaching theoretical concepts and their development. These realizations suggest that Physics occupies a singular role in college curricula, introducing students, even at the introductory level, to the acquisition of knowledge by theoretical means and the assessment of theory based on experimental evidence.

Abstract:Along with weaving together observations, experiments, and theoretical constructs into a coherent mesh of understanding of the world around us, physics over its past five centuries has continuously refined the base concepts on which the whole framework is built. In quantum physics, first in non-relativistic mechanics and later in quantum field theories, even familiar concepts of position, momentum, wave or particle, are derived constructs from the classical limit in which we live but not intrinsic to the underlying physics. Most crucially, the very idea of the individual, whether an object or an event, distinguished only in a mere label of identity from others identical to it in all the physics, exists only as an approximation, not an element of underlying reality. Failure to recognize this and seeking alternative explanations in many worlds or multiverses leads only to incoherent logic and incorrect physics. As an example, in a physical system such as an atom in a particular state, physics deals with the universal system of all such atoms but makes no meaningful prediction of the position of an electron or the time of decay of any specific atom. Those are incidental, entirely random among all possible positions and times, even while physics makes very precise predictions for the distribution of the outcomes in measurements on atoms in that state. Physics deals with the universal, not the individual.

Abstract:Andrew Pickering,a contemporary sociologist,from the point of SSK,published his works of social study on the history of high-energy physics in his Constructing Quarks and others articles,which leaded to dispute in the circle of physicists and philosophers of science.This article analyses Pickering's case's study of the discovery of neutral current,points out that he wanted to set up a new kind of 'historical account',which independence of traditional scientists' account.His account forms a new kind of critical historiography approach.It is heuristic in the study of history of sciences.

Abstract:This book collects contributions by some of the leading scholars working on seventeenth-century mechanics and the mechanical philosophy. Together, the articles provide a broad and accurate picture of the fortune of Galileo\u0027s theory of motion in Europe and of the various physical, mathematical, and ontological arguments that were used in favour and against it. Were Galileo\u0027s contemporaries really aware of what Westfall has described as \"the incompatibility between the demands of mathematical mechanics and the needs of mechanical philosophy\"? To what extent did Galileo\u0027s silence concerning the cause of free fall impede the acceptance of his theory of motion? Which methods were used, before the invention if the infinitesimal calculus, to check the validity of Galileo\u0027s laws of free fall and of parabolic motion? And what sorts of experiments were invoked in favour or against these laws? These and related questions are addressed in this volume.
