Abstract:The High temperature gas-cooled reactor (H TG R) coupled with helium turbine cycle is considered as one of the leading candida tes for future nuclear power plants. In this paper, the HTGR helium turbine cycl e was analyzed and optimized. Then the focal point of investigation was concentr ated on the fundamental thermodynamic and aerodynamic features of helium turboma chine. As a result, a helium turbomachine is different from a general combustion gas turbine in two main design features, that is a helium turbomachine has more blade stages and shorter blade length, which are caused by the helium property and the high pressure of a closed cycle, respectively.
Technical Assessment of Gas Turbine Cycle for High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor

Abstract:The gas turbine cycle appears to be the best near-term power conversion method for the high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). This paper extensively investigates the gas turbine cycle including direct cycle, open indirect cycle and closed indirect cycle with medium of helium, nitrogen and air. Each cycle is analyzed and optimized from the thermodynamic standpoint and its turbo-machine is aerodynamically designed. As a result, the direct cycle with helium is an ideal option for the HTGR gas turbine cycle; however it is not easy to be realized based on current technology. The closed indirect cycle with helium or nitrogen is a practical one at present time, which can get the gas turbine cycle and lay technical bases for the future direct cycle.

Abstract:The high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) coupled with turbine cycle is considered as one of the leading candidates for future nuclear power plants. In this paper, the various types of HTGR gas turbine cycles are concluded as three typical cycles of direct cycle, closed indirect cycle and open indirect cycle. Furthermore they are theoretically converted to three Brayton cycles of helium, nitrogen and air. Those three types of Brayton cycles are thermodynamically analyzed and optimized. The results show that the variety of gas affects the cycle pressure ratio more significantly than other cycle parameters, however, the optimized cycle efficiencies of the three Brayton cycles are almost the same. In addition, the turbomachines which are required for the three optimized Brayton cycles are aerodynamically analyzed and compared and their fundamental characteristics are obtained. Helium turbocompressor has lower stage pressure ratio and more stage number than those for nitrogen and air machines, while helium and nitrogen turbocompressors have shorter blade length than that for air machine.

Abstract:The high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) coupled with direct gas turbine cycle is a promising concept in the future of nuclear power development. Both helium gas turbine and compressor are key components in the cycle. Under normal conditions, the mode of power adjustment is to control total helium mass in the primary loop using gas storage vessels. Meanwhile, thermal power of reactor core is regulated. This article analyzes off-design performances of helium gas turbine and compressors for high temperature gas-cooled reactor with gas turbine cycle (HTGR-GT) at steady state level of electric power adjustment. Moreover, performances of the cycle were simply discussed. Results show that the expansion ratio of turbine decreases as electric power reduces but the compression ratios of compressors increase, efficiencies of both turbine and compressors decrease to some extent. Thermal power does not vary consistently with electric power, the difference between these two powers increases as electric power reduces. As a result of much thermal energy dissipated in the temperature modulator set at core inlet, thermal efficiency of the cycle has a widely reduction under partial load conditions.

Abstract:The importance of the nuclear power industry is demonstrated from the energy supply and environmental protection standpoint; then the HTGR gas turbine cycle is analyzed and the results show that the electric generation efficiency is 47.9%; finally, the technical advantages of the HTGR compared with other advanced reactor types are illustrated. It is concluded that the HTGR has great future potential to be one of the advanced reactors in the generation Ⅳ nuclear power system.

Abstract:High temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) is featured by inherent safety. With high outlet temperature, HTGR is of potentially economical competitiveness. Helium turbine system can take advantage of high temperature helium to achieve high efficiency as well as compact structure, with development perspective. Key components of HTGR helium turbine system include rotary machinery such as turbo compressor and motor/generator, and heat transfer components (i.e. precooler, intercooler, recuperator and nuclear reactor). Due to the closed cycle, the features of key components are not independent. This paper preliminary explores the inherent relationships among features of key components, especially changing with reactor power. For heat transfer components, the general relationship between pressure drop and the effectiveness of heat transfer is analyzed. Furthermore, it is found that the pressure drop in recuperator, precooler and inter-cooler depends on the reactor power with engineering constraints. Besides, There exists the approximate squared relation between power and pressure drop in heat exchangers. For rotary machinery, it is found that the moment of inertia is the function of reactor power. For example, the moment of inertia of motor/generator is proportional to the reactor power. The relationship between moment of inertia of turbo-compressors and reactor power is more complex. This study is expected to be helpful to the design of key components for HTGR helium turbine system and can be applied to analyze the cycle’s dynamic characteristics.

Abstract:With gradual increase in reactor outlet temperature, the efficient power conversion technology has become one of developing trends of (very) high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). In this paper, different cycle power generation schemes for HTGRs were systematically studied. Physical and mathematical models were established for these three cycle schemes: closed Brayton cycle, simple combined cycle, and reheated combined cycle. The effects and mechanism of key parameters such as reactor core outlet temperature, reactor core inlet temperature and compression ratio on the features of these cycles were analyzed. Then, optimization results were given with engineering restrictive conditions, including pinch point temperature differences. Results revealed that within the temperature range of HTGRs (700900 C), the reheated combined cycle had the highest efficiency, while the simple combined cycle had the lowest efficiency (900 C). The efficiencies of the closed Brayton cycle, simple combined cycle and reheated combined cycle are 49.5%, 46.6% and 50.1%, respectively. These results provide insights on the different schemes of these cycles, and reveal the effects of key parameters on performance of these cycles. It could be helpful to understand and develop a combined cycle coupled with a high temperature reactor in the future. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Comparative Study of Helium Turbine Brayton Cycle and Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycle for HTGR

Abstract:High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM), which is designed by Tsinghua university of China, is under construction in Shidao Bay of China. It will be the world’s first pebble-bed type modular HTGR commercial demonstration plant. In HTR-PM project, steam-Rankine cycle has used in the power conversion system because it represents current state-of-the-art technology. Meanwhile, helium turbine for HTGR has been investigated for many years in Tsinghua University. Mock-up machine for HTR-10GT has been built. Helium turbine for 250MW HTGR, which is based on HTR-PM, has completed conceptual designed. However, supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle has shown to have great potentials for future HTGR technology in recent years because of its critical properties. Helium turbine cycle and S-CO2 Brayton cycle are both candidates for future HTGR. Therefore, comparative study is conducted in this paper. Comparison is focused on achievable efficiencies for each cycle mentioned above and on cycle layout with respect to simplicity and compactness, which primarily determines capital cost. Firstly, the physical model for helium turbine cycle with recuperator and intercooler is built and cycle performance is analyzed based on the parameters of HTR-PM. Then the model for S-CO2 Brayton cycle with recompression is also built and the cycle efficiency is analyzed with the same parameters of HTR-PM. Secondly, comparison between helium turbine cycle and S-CO2 Brayton cycle is made from the view of thermodynamics. Moreover, parameters optimization of both cycles based on HTR-PM is carried out. At last, advantage and drawback of both cycles are discussed from the engineering point. In conclusion, cycle simplicity and technology maturity of helium turbine cycle are better than S-CO2 Brayton cycle. But on the other side, smaller size equipment and less compression work of S-CO2 Brayton Cycle are more competitive than helium turbine cycle. Helium turbine with higher temperature and S-CO2 Brayton Cycle with higher pressure can achieve higher efficiency than steam Rankine cycle.

Abstract:The market prospect of the combined heat and power generation in China was analyzed,and the feasibility of high temperature reactor for combined heat and power generation (HTR-CHP) was studied in technical and economic aspects.The results show that HTR-CHP can balance the operation safety and heating efficiency,and guarantee that the radiation effect on the surrounding people and the environment is sufficiently low.Through commercialization development,the economy of HTR can be improved remarkably,and has economic advantage over gas-fired plants,which reveals that the high temperature reactor has the potential to replace the gas-fired plants to supply combined heat and power.

Abstract:With gradual increase in reactor outlet temperature,the efficient power conversion technology has become one of developing trends of (very) high temperature gas-cooled reactor.Based on the HTR-10,HTR-10GT and HTR-PM,aiming at a higher reactor outlet temperature (ROT),the paper analyzes,optimizes and designs the thermodynamic parameters of the helium turbine cycle of high temperature gas-cooled reactor.Two proposed operating points are determined by the optimization model combined with the constrints of engineering experience.One of these working points is close to the current engineering experiences,inherited the design experience of the helium compressor and turbine of the HTR-10GT.Its ROT is 850℃,the cycle pressure ratio is 2.47,and the cycle efficiency is 47.60％.Another working point is slightly forwardlooking.Its ROT is 900℃,the reactor inlet temperature is 550℃,the cycle pressure ratio is 2.75,and the cycle efficiency is 48.92％.And based on these two working points the HTGR helium cycle parameters have been designed.It would be helpful to develop a closed Brayton cycle coupled with a high temperature reactor in the future.

Abstract:Based on the advanced modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor(MHTGR) technology and the super-critical(SC) steam turbine cycle technology,the modes of MHTGR plant coupling with SC steam turbine cycle were investigated.By considering the features of MHTGR and SC steam turbine cycle,the patterns of steam cycle and the optimal cycle parameters were studied.The standard once-reheat SC steam turbine cycle was studied and corresponding parameters were calculated and compared.The present study can be as the theoretical basis for the prospective MHTGR SC steam cycle plant and provide supports for the further investigations and engineering design.

Abstract:High temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) which is one of generation IV reactor has been widely given attention in many countries since the sixties of the last century because of its inherent safety and high efficiency. Currently, the HTGR commonly uses regenerative Brayton cycle. However, as reactor outlet temperature (ROT) rising, regenerative Brayton cycle has a higher reactor inlet temperature (RIT) than 500°C and is limited by reactor materials. Combined cycle of HTGR not only can solve the problem of high RIT, but also can get a higher cycle efficiency than 50%. In this paper an accurate model of combined cycle consisting of topping Brayton cycle, bottoming Rankine cycle and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) was established. In terms of new model of combined cycle, this paper analyzed the main properties of simple combined cycle. And put forward two optimization schemes improving the cycle efficiency of combined cycle.

Abstract:The High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor coupled with gas turbine (HTGR-GT) is supposed to be one of the candidates for the future nuclear power plants in both electricity and hydrogen production. The HTGR-GT cycle is theoretically based on the closed Brayton cycle with recuperator, intercooler and precooler. In this paper, the exergy analysis on a typical HTGR coupled with Gas Turbine was presented. Besides the core outlet temperature of the cycle, other operating parameters have been calculated to see their effect of the exergy efficiency of the whole cycle. The results show that, the compressor pressure ratio (7) of the cycle has a great effect on the exergy losses of both heat-exchange and work components. And only the exergy loss of the recuperator decreases with the increase of 7, especially sharply when 7 is small, while the exergy losses of other components increases. So there are optimized 7 under different working conditions. The effect of other operating parameters, like pressure drop, recuperation efficiency and isentropic efficiencies of compressors and turbine, has been evaluated. The effect of two formers is similar, both obvious at the range of near the optimized 7, and 7 goes down slightly when these two operating conditions are better. Compressors and turbine, as the work components of the cycle, their isentropic efficiency is quite important to the exergy efficiency of the cycle. The bigger 7, the more effect. Whatever, the isentropic efficiency of compressors and turbine is already quite high. Copyright © 2006 by ASME.

Abstract:High temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) with direct gas turbine cycle has the potential advantages of high cycle efficiency. It uses the high temperature gas generated by the reactor core to work directly, breaking the limitation of the low gas temperature of Rankine cycles in traditional reactors. In most former studies, the working medium used in the cycle is Helium (He), and there are few researches about the influence of mixed working medium on the cycle efficiency. In this paper, the thermal cycle efficiency is calculated under the condition of different mixing ratio, to analyze the influence from different parameters such as compression ratio. The results show that the optimum molar fraction of CO_2 can be made reasonably through considering all the influence factors, to maximize the cycle efficiency. And increasing the ratio of CO_2 and Helium can significantly improve the dropping trend of the cycle efficiency under the high compression ratio. In the meantime, however, the cycle pressure loss caused by the increase of CO_2 should be considered as well.

Abstract:High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs) have excellent development prospects because of their inherent safety and multiple application areas, such as hydrogen production. The combined cycle coupled with HTGR is a type of cycle for cascade utilization of energy that can efficiently convert heat from HTGR. In this paper, an off-design control strategy, called integral mass flow control, is proposed. The calculation model is discussed, and the performance at partial load is analyzed. When the load changes, the topping cycle is controlled by the inventory, and the bottoming cycle is adjusted by sliding pressure (the temperature of the main steam remains unchanged, and the pressure changes with the load), while the mass flow of the topping cycle and that of bottoming cycle changes synchronously. With this control strategy, the combined cycle coupled with the HTGR can be operated safely and efficiently within a load range of 100% to 30%. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Owing to the current serious environmental and climate problems, the energy industry must focus on the problem of energy utilization rates. High-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) are fourth-generation reactors, characterized by high outlet temperatures. The combined cycle is composed of the gas turbine and steam turbine cycles, and it can realize the cascade utilization of high-quality energy. It is a highly competitive power conversion scheme for HTGRs. In this study, the matching characteristics of the combined cycle coupled with HTGRs are revealed through the progressive optimization method. In the combined cycle coupled with HTGRs, the topping and bottoming cycle are both closed cycles, therefore, the optimization for cycle efficiency is to match the topping and bottoming cycles. For a combined cycle with subcritical steam parameters, there are two extreme values of the combined cycle efficiency that have different power ratios. The characteristics revealed in this study are unique to closed combined cycle coupled with HTGRs.

Abstract:High temperature gas‐cooled reactor (HTR) is of a potential of using com‐bined cycle to generate electricity due to high reactor core outlet temperature of 900‐1 000 ℃ .In a typical combined cycle of HTR ,a precooler was used to reduce the com‐pressor inlet temperature and the compression work ,while it also lowers the reactor core inlet temperature and hinders the further improvement of cycle efficiency . To improve cycle efficiency ,the influence of precooler on efficiency of the combined cycle of HTR was analyzed theoretically .And a criterion was deduced to determine whether a combined cycle of HTR adopts a precooler based on the analysis .A simplified combined cycle system without precooler was proposed based on the criterion .The optimization results show that the efficiency of the simplified combined cycle is 1.4% higher than that of the typical combined cycle and 1.7% higher than that of the recuperative cycle with reactor core outlet temperature of 950 ℃ .Compared with the recuperative cycle , the simplified combined cycle is more competitive in work conditions with high reactor core outlet temperature and low reactor core inlet temperature .

Abstract:A steady analysis code on the direct helium turbine cycle system of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor was developed.The model includes reactor core,steam generator,gas turbine,compressor and heat exchanger modular.The startup procedure of gas turbine system was simulated and analyzed.The surge of compressor was also studied and the effects of heat transfer capacity,temperature and pressure were analyzed.The result shows that the compressor has enough safety margins in the load change procedure of gas turbine system.

Abstract:This paper presents investigations on the possible combination of modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) technology with the supercritical (SC) steam turbine technology and the prospective deployments of the MHTGR SC power plant. Energy conversion efficiency of steam turbine cycle can be improved by increasing the main steam pressure and temperature. Investigations on SC water reactor (SCWR) reveal that the development of SCWR power plants still needs further research and development. The MHTGR SC plant coupling the existing technologies of current MHTGR module design with operation experiences of SC FPP will achieve high cycle efficiency in addition to its inherent safety. The standard once-reheat SC steam turbine cycle and the once-reheat steam cycle with life-steam have been studied and corresponding parameters were computed. Efficiencies of thermodynamic processes of MHTGR SC plants were analyzed, while comparisons were made between an MHTGR SC plant and a designed advanced passive PWR - AP1000. It was shown that the net plant efficiency of an MHTGR SC plant can reach 45% or above, 30% higher than that of AP1000 (35% net efficiency). Furthermore, an MHTGR SC plant has higher environmental competitiveness without emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
