Abstract:This paper proposes a decomposition framework for quantifying contributions of the determinants of poverty to spatial differences or temporal changes in poverty. This framework is then applied to address the issue why poverty incidence is higher in inland than in coastal China. The empirical application requires household or individual income observations which, generally speaking, are not available. Thus, a datageneration method developed by Shorrocks and Wan is introduced to construct such observations from grouped income data. It is found that inland China is poorer than coastal China, mainly due to lower efficiency in resource utilization not to less endowment of resources. Also, trade became poverty-reducing in coastal China in the late 1990s but remained poverty-inducing in inland China. Policy implications are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The paper investigates income inequality in urban China by using 2002—2007 UHS datasets.It finds that:(1) The Gini coefficient rose first and then fell,and it's 0.342,0.361 and 0.349 for 2002,2004 and 2007 separately.(2) The effects of real estate market and finance market on enlarging income inequality are increasingly stronger.Income from wealth has become the third important factor affecting income inequality,whose effects are just inferior to those of wage income and net public transfer income,and its contribution rate has arrived at 7.3% in 2007.(3) Real estate investments can enlarge income inequality more greatly than finance investments because of the higher investment threshold and the lasting rise of house prices.

Abstract:This paper explores pitfalls in regression-based inequality decompositions. A simple procedure is developed for rectifying these pitfalls. The procedure does not impose any restrictions on the underlying regression model and it can be applied to any inequality measure(s). Once combined with conventional decomposition methods or the Shapley value approach of Shorrocks (1999), what is being proposed becomes a most general and powerful framework for regression-based inequality decomposition. Empirical examples are provided to demonstrate the use of the procedure, and to contrast our results with those based on recent developments of Fields and Yoo (2000) and Morduch and Sicular (2002).
An Analysis of the Issue of Inter-Industry Income Inequality in China

Abstract:After entering the new century,the inter-industry wage differentials in China is expanding continually.The regression-based Shapley-value decomposition shows that such factors as human capital,ownership system,capital investment and technology have significant influence on the inter-industry income inequality;of which the contribution of human capital to the differentials is about 45%,and the ownership system is more than 20%.Therefore,such administrative measures as equal education,increasing education returns,opening the labor market of monopoly industry,and carrying out labor negotiation system can effectively settle the problem of inter-industry wage differentials.

Abstract:The paper applies the standard decomposition analysis of the General Entropy Measure to a new set of GDP and sectoral income data for Chinese prefectures with three points of observation over a decade (1993, 1998 and 2003). Prefectures are arranged into regional subgroupings on different levels of aggregation, i.e. the belt, the macroregion and the province. We investigate the relative roles of inter- and intra-regional factors of total inequality. Main results include: There is a strong impact on intra-provincial factors, so that larger aggregation schemes may mislead regional policies; the level of urban inequality continues to be much lower and more uniform than rural inequality, however, with increasing urban inequality in the coastal areas; there is a clear trend towards greater inter- and intra-regional inequality which is driven by rural-urban disparities.

The regional pattern of the decomposition suggests provincial groupings based not entirely on geographical locations.

Decomposition of Rising Income Inequality based on the Distributions

Abstract:This study adopts the semi-parametric Kernel Density Smoothing technique to estimate the income distribution of Chinese urban employees for 1987,1996,and 2004. Using the income inequality decomposition method based on income distributions,we examine the causes of rising income inequality. There are two major causes:one is the changes in employees' labor market characteristics,such as the increase in the education level and the change in industry and occupation distributions; the other is the changes in the returns to these characteristics,such as the increase in the return to education,and the increased disparity in the returns to different industries and occupations. We find that the latter is the major cause of the rising income inequality in urban China.

Abstract:This study examines changes in Chinese urban income distribution from 1987 to 1996 and 1996 to 2004 using nationwide household data and investigates the causes of these changes. The Firpo, Fortin, and Lemieux (2007, 2009) method based on unconditional quantile regressions is used to decompose changes in income distribution and income inequality measures, such as variance and a 10:90 ratio. The decomposition results show that wage structure effects, such as a widening gender earnings gap, increases in returns to college education, and increases in earnings differentials between industries, company ownership types, and regions, have been the major contributors to the overall increases in income inequality. It was also found that at different points on the income distribution (e.g., the lower or upper half), the contributing factors that increase income inequality are different.

Abstract:When Gini coefficients are decomposed by class (e.g. occupation, sex, region, and so on, it is possible to examine how income inequality can be measured by its class components: intra-class, inter-class and overlapped. In the literature, there have been many studies on the decomposition methodology but most methods are either inflexible or too onerous for empirical analysis. This paper develops a new approach to overcome the shortcomings of existing studies. An example using the most recent Chinese rural income data is provided to demonstrate how this method can be applied to study regional income inequality.

Abstract:This paper proposes a framework for inequality decomposition in which inequality of the target variable, e.g., income, can be decomposed into components associated with any number of determinants or proxy variables in a regression equation. The proposed framework is general enough to be applied to any inequality measure and it imposes few restrictions on the specification of the regression model. Some traditional decomposition methods rely on calculating the covariances between incomes and their ranks. Such methods have obvious limitations in empirical studies. This paper develops a simple decomposition approach applicable for any type of data with an example to demonstrate how income inequality in rural China in 1992 can be decomposed into agricultural and non-agricultural components.
