Abstract:The paper investigates income inequality in urban China by using 2002—2007 UHS datasets.It finds that:(1) The Gini coefficient rose first and then fell,and it's 0.342,0.361 and 0.349 for 2002,2004 and 2007 separately.(2) The effects of real estate market and finance market on enlarging income inequality are increasingly stronger.Income from wealth has become the third important factor affecting income inequality,whose effects are just inferior to those of wage income and net public transfer income,and its contribution rate has arrived at 7.3% in 2007.(3) Real estate investments can enlarge income inequality more greatly than finance investments because of the higher investment threshold and the lasting rise of house prices.

Abstract:This paper explores pitfalls in regression-based inequality decompositions. A simple procedure is developed for rectifying these pitfalls. The procedure does not impose any restrictions on the underlying regression model and it can be applied to any inequality measure(s). Once combined with conventional decomposition methods or the Shapley value approach of Shorrocks (1999), what is being proposed becomes a most general and powerful framework for regression-based inequality decomposition. Empirical examples are provided to demonstrate the use of the procedure, and to contrast our results with those based on recent developments of Fields and Yoo (2000) and Morduch and Sicular (2002).

Abstract:In this study, we classify the income gap into the total income gap and the inter-group income gap depending on the subjects of study. Measurement and decomposition methods are discussed at three levels: income inequality, polarization, and the inter-group income gap. While income inequality focuses on description of the overall income gap, polarization aims to examine the phenomenon of the "clustering effect" in income distribution, for which the measurement indexes used can be broadly divided into bi-polarization and multi-polarization indexes. The Shapley decomposition method and decomposition of the distribution of intergroup income differences are cutting edge techniques for the decomposition of the income gap. We also stress the applicability and relevance of income gap measurement indexes and decomposition methods, to facilitate selection of the most appropriate methods for more accurate detection of the causes of the income gap.

Abstract:To decompose a rise in income inequality,recent developments rec- ommend estimating the wage distribution and decomposing the change in the wage distribution to different factors.Once this is done,the decomposition of a specific index follows immediately.Moreover the decomposition of entire distribution re- veals which groups of individuals,upper or lower earners,experience a greater in- crease in income inequality.For this reason,these methods are particularly useful in empirical research.We introduce two semi-parametric methods of income distri- bution decomposition.One is the reweighting method developed by Lemieux and his collaborators.The other is the approach based on conditional quantile regres- sions,initially proposed by Machado and Mata.

Abstract:This paper proposes a framework for inequality decomposition in which inequality of the target variable, e.g., income, can be decomposed into components associated with any number of determinants or proxy variables in a regression equation. The proposed framework is general enough to be applied to any inequality measure and it imposes few restrictions on the specification of the regression model. This generality is illustrated by quantifying root sources of regional income inequality in rural China using a combined Box–Cox and Box–Tidwell income-generating function. Abstract:A considerable literature exists on the measurement of income inequality in China and its increasing trend. Much less is known about the driving forces of this trend and their quantitative contributions. Conventional decompositions, by factor components or by population subgroups, provide only limited information on the determinants of income inequality. This paper represents an early attempt to apply the regression-based decomposition framework to the study of inequality accounting in rural China, using household-level data. It is found that geography has been the dominant factor but is becoming less important in explaining total inequality. Capital input emerges as a most significant determinant of income inequality. Farming structure is more important than labor and other inputs in contributing to income inequality across households.

Abstract:Wage decompositions are used to decompose the wage differentials in a distributional statistic into various explanatory factors.The methods can be divided into mean decomposition and distributional decomposition.The former is an improvement based on the canonical Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition.The latter includes seven main approaches,where JMP1993,DFL and MM2005 lay a foundation for them.This paper systematically exploits the differences and the connections among these methods and also proposes a comprehensive guide map to understand the development of the decomposition methods for wage differentials.

Abstract:The main objectives of the paper are to decompose Atkinson's measure into within-group and between-group inequality and to compare it with decompositions of inequality measures, like the Gini coefficient, variance of logarithms, Theil's entropy index and the square of the coefficient of variation. Atkinson's inequality index is given an interpretation of mean order β and then it is decomposed for population subgroups. Various other measures are considered for decompositions and a variety of decomposition schemes for Gini coefficient and other measures in the literature is reviewed and commented upon. Empirical analysis using U.S.A. and U.K. data are performed on the basis of income distribution data classified by family size. For various decomposition schemes, contribution to between size-group and within size-group inequalities are compared in percentage terms. Comparisons are also made over time for the years 1964 and 1974 both for U.S.A. and U.K. and the result indicates that within size-group income inequality has declined while between size group and total income inequality shows an increase. Three important properties of Atkinson's inequality index are proved in the appendix.

Abstract:When total income consists of a number of factors, the Gini coefficient measuring income inequality can be decomposed into factor components. Some traditional decomposition methods rely on calculating the covariances between incomes and their ranks. Such methods have obvious limitations in empirical studies. This paper develops a simple decomposition approach applicable for any type of data with an example to demonstrate how income inequality in rural China in 1992 can be decomposed into agricultural and non-agricultural components.

Abstract:In the developing process of social economy, there must be a close relationship between the changes of resource and structure of the rural people's income and the development of the income inequality between the rural and the urban, especially in some typical areas with the problems concerned. This paper is a tentative research on this relationship based on the analysis of rural-urban income inequality in Zhejiang Province from the point of view of the residents' income resource. Index of GE and its factors decomposition method are popular in the research of income inequality, especially in the research of rural-urban income inequality. This paper first uses the GE region decomposition method to analyze different regions' income inequality and their development in Zhejiang Province. Then it uses the factors decomposition method to analyze different income resources' contribution on the rural-urban income inequality and the contribution's change in the sample time series. Finally, it explains the rural-urban income inequality in Zhejiang Province in view of the income structure. The result of the GE calculation indicates that the total income inequality and the rural-urban income inequality have been increasing since 1990's. Furthermore, the results of factors decomposition of the rural-urban inequality indicate: wage income increases rural-urban income inequality because wage income is the main income for urban residents; family management income is different with wage income, which means that it decreases the rural-urban income inequality, because family management income is the main income for the rural residents; because of the dualistic structure between the rural and the urban and the discriminating institution of income redistribution, the transfer income's contribution to rural-urban income inequality is obviously increasing the rural-urban income inequality; property income's contribution of rural-urban income inequality is not very clear because of its low proportion, but it basically increases the rural-urban income inequality.

Abstract:A new method is proposed to decompose inequality changes as measured by the Gini index into structural effects, real inequality effects and interactive effects. Application of the method to updated Chinese data reveals that structural effects represent the driving force underlying the increasing trend in regional income inequality in rural China. Policy implications are explored. In addition to these contributions, considerable efforts are made to construct the income data used in the article. Pitfalls in measuring income inequality in rural China are discussed.
A Regression-based Decomposition Approach

Abstract:This paper proposes a decomposition framework for quantifying contributions of the determinants of poverty to spatial differences or temporal changes in poverty. This framework is then applied to address the issue why poverty incidence is higher in inland than in coastal China. The empirical application requires household or individual income observations which, generally speaking, are not available. Thus, a datageneration method developed by Shorrocks and Wan is introduced to construct such observations from grouped income data. It is found that inland China is poorer than coastal China, mainly due to lower efficiency in resource utilization not to less endowment of resources. Also, trade became poverty-reducing in coastal China in the late 1990s but remained poverty-inducing in inland China. Policy implications are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The measurement of carbon inequality including Gini coefficient and historical cumulative Gini coefficient shows the current situation of carbon emissions, while the group decomposition of carbon inequality enables us to further unearth and understand the components and causes of the inequality. This paper takes use of two methods to calculate the contributions of between-groups and intra-group inequalities in order to decompose the overall inequality properly. In addition, all countries in the world are divided into Annex I Parties and Non-Annex I Parties which are the main sides in climate change negotiations. Then, considering the special situations of the least developed countries (LDCs), we make a comparative analysis by dividing the countries into LDCs, Annex I Parties and Non-Annex I Parties (without LDCs). The results prove that between-groups inequality is the main cause of overall inequality, taking the percentage of 60% to 80%, before 2009; total inequality reduces rapidly and between-groups and intra-group inequalities tend to reach the same level during 2009-2100. Furthermore, the declination of total inequality mainly results from the decrease of between-groups inequality; and intra-group inequality appears a mild upward tendency. Finally, between-groups inequality can be hidden to some extent if we don’t take historical cumulative emissions into consideration.

Abstract:When Gini coefficients are decomposed by class (e.g. occupation, sex, region, and so on, it is possible to examine how income inequality can be measured by its class components: intra-class, inter-class and overlapped. In the literature, there have been many studies on the decomposition methodology but most methods are either inflexible or too onerous for empirical analysis. This paper develops a new approach to overcome the shortcomings of existing studies. An example using the most recent Chinese rural income data is provided to demonstrate how this method can be applied to study regional income inequality.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to introduce a new approach to the decomposition of the Gini ratio into three components, supporting them with economic and statistical rigorous interpretations. The three components are: (i) the Gini inequality within subpopulations; (ii) the net contribution of the extended Gini inequality between subpopulations; and (iii) the contribution of the intensity of transvariation between subpopulations. These components are weighted by the product of the population shares times the income shares of the corresponding subpopulations where the weights add to one.The decomposition introduced in this research is applied to the 1990 U.S. family income distribution. The population of families is disaggregated by types into the following subpopulations: (a) married-couple families; (b) male householder, no wife present; and (c) female householder, no husband present.
