Abstract:As a newly emerged active flow control technique, micro blowing/suction has shown a great potential in reducing the skin friction of turbulent flows. Throughout comprehensive analyses of active flow control of micro blowing/suction devices for a NACA0015 airfoil by means of CFD technique, the effects on various characteristics such as lift and drag coefficients and separation areas are investigated in this study. The control devices were placed at 12%c, 30%c and 70%c from the leading edge (c is the chord length of the airfoil), respectively. The corresponding trends of flow separation control at these locations were analyzed with a varied range of angle of attacks (AOA). The two- and three-dimensional incompressible unsteady detached-eddy simulation (DES) was used, along with the k-e turbulence model, in solving the flow problem. The numerical computational results have demonstrated that: (1) Installing micro blowing/suction devices near the separation point is more efficient, as blowing can mix the jet flow and the incoming flow to energize the turbulent kinetic energy and suction can mitigate the flow of low turbulent kinetic energy, which leads to a result of reducing the separation. (2) Suction sometime has more effective influence than blowing, when the flow control devices are placed at 12%c and 30%c. When the control device is placed at 70%c, the effects of lift enhancement and drag reduction are almost the same regardless of blowing and/or suction method. When the AOA is less than 18°, both methods can achieve the goal of lift enhancement and drag reduction. When the AOA is larger than 18°, neither blowing nor suction is efficient. (3) The 3-D numerical simulation shows that the vortex structure evolves from a 2-D pattern near the separation point to a 3-D pattern in the downstream. However the characteristics of flow separation control over a 3-D airfoil simulation agrees well with 2-D numerical results. (4) Blowing at 30%c can move the separation point downstream from 70%c to 80%c at AOA=11°.
