Abstract:We consider the possible role that chiral orbifold conformal field theories may play in describing the edge state theories of quantum Hall systems. This is a generalization of work that already exists in the literature, where it has been shown that 1+1 chiral bosons living on a n-dimensional torus, and which couple to a U_1 gauge field, give rise to anomalous electric currents, the anomaly being related to the Hall conductivity. The well known $O(n,n;Z)$ duality group associated with such toroidal conformal field theories transforms the edge states and Hall conductivities in a way which makes interesting connections between different theories, e.g. between systems exhibiting the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect. In this paper we try to explore the extension of these constructions to the case where such bosons live on a n-dimensional orbifold. We give a general formalism for discussing the relevant quantities like the Hall conductance and their transformation under the duality groups present in orbifold compactifications. We illustrate these ideas by presenting a detailed analysis of a toy model based on the two-dimensional Z_3 orbifold. In this model we obtain new classes of filling fractions, which generally the correspond to fermionic edge states carrying fractional electric charge. We also consider the relation between orbifold edge theories and Luttinger liquids (LL's), which in the past have provided important insights into the physics of quantum Hall systems.

Abstract:For vertex operator algebra V_{\sqrt{2}A_l} associated to the even lattice \sqrt{2}A_l which is \sqrt{2} times root lattice of type A_l, it was shown by Dong-Li-Maosn-Norton that the Virasoro vector is a sum of l+1 mutually orthogonal conformal vectors with central charges c_i=1-6/(i+2)(i+3) for i=1,...,l and c_{l+1}=2l/(l+3) and the subalgebra T generated by these vectors is a tensor product of Virasoro vertex operator algebras L(c_i,0). In this paper we determine the decomposition of V_{\sqrt{2}A_3} into the sum of irreducible T-modules completely.

Abstract:It is known from Zhu's results that under modular transformations, correlators of rational $C_2$-cofinite vertex operator algebras transform like Jacobi forms. We investigate the modular transformation properties of VOA correlators that have zero modes inserted. We derive recursion relations for such correlators and use them to establish modular transformation properties. We find that correlators with only zero modes transform like quasi-modular forms, and mixed correlators with both zero modes and vertex operators transform like quasi-Jacobi forms. As an application of our results, we introduce algebras of higher weight fields whose zero mode correlators mimic the properties of those of weight 1 fields. We also give a simplified proof of the weight 1 transformation properties originally proven by Miyamoto.

Abstract:We give an abstract construction, based on the Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov equations, of a family of vertex operator algebras of rank $26$ associated to the modified regular representations of the Virasoro algebra. The vertex operators are obtained from the tensor products of intertwining operators for a pair of Virasoro algebras. We explicitly determine the structure coefficients that yield the axioms of VOAs. In the process of our construction, we obtain new hypergeometric identities.

Abstract:Chiral de Rham complex introduced by Malikov et al. in 1998, is a sheaf of vertex algebras on any complex analytic manifold or non-singular algebraic variety. Starting from the vertex algebra of global sections of chiral de Rham complex on the upper half plane, we consider the subspace of $\Gamma$-invariant sections that are meromorphic at the cusps. The space is again a vertex operator algebra, with a linear basis consisting of lifting formulas of meromorphic modular forms. We will describe two types of lifting formulas, and generalize the Rankin-Cohen bracket to the meromorphic modular forms. As an application, we will show that the vertex algebras constructed by congruence subgroups are simple.

Abstract:The coset (commutant) construction is a fundamental tool to construct vertex operator algebras from known vertex operator algebras. The aim of this paper is to provide a fundamental example of the commutants of vertex algebras ouside vertex operator algebras. Namely, the commutant $C$ of the principal subalgebra $W$ of the $A_1$ lattice vertex operator algebra $V_{A_1}$ is investigated. An explicit minimal set of generators of $C$, which consists of infinitely many elements and strongly generates $C$, is introduced. It implies that the algebra $C$ is not finitely generated. Furthermore, Zhu's Poisson algebra of $C$ is shown to be isomorphic to an infinite-dimensional algebra $\mathbb{C}[x_1,x_2,\ldots]/(x_ix_j\,|\,i,j=1,2,\ldots)$. In particular, the associated variety of $C$ consists of a point. Moreover, $W$ and $C$ are verified to form a dual pair in $V_{A_1}$.

Classification of Self-Dual Vertex Operator Superalgebras of Central Charge at Most 24

Abstract:We classify the self-dual (or holomorphic) vertex operator superalgebras of central charge 24, or in physics parlance the purely left-moving, fermionic 2-dimensional conformal field theories with just one primary field. There are exactly 969 such vertex operator superalgebras under suitable regularity assumptions (essentially strong rationality) and the assumption that the shorter moonshine module $V\!B^\natural$ is the unique self-dual vertex operator superalgebra of central charge 23.5 whose weight-1/2 and weight-1 spaces vanish. Additionally, there might be self-dual vertex operator superalgebras arising as fake copies of $V\!B^\natural$ tensored with a free fermion $F$. We construct and classify the self-dual vertex operator superalgebras by determining the 2-neighbourhood graph of the self-dual vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 and also by realising them as simple-current extensions of a dual pair containing a certain maximal lattice vertex operator algebra. We show that all vertex operator superalgebras besides $V\!B^\natural\otimes F$ and potential fake copies thereof stem from elements of the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_0$, the automorphism group of the Leech lattice $\Lambda$. By splitting off free fermions $F$, if possible, we obtain the classification for all central charges less than or equal to 24.

Abstract:A theory of tensor products of modules for a vertex operator algebra is being developed by Lepowsky and the author. To use this theory, one first has to verify that the vertex operator algebra satisfies certain conditions. We show in the present paper that for any vertex operator algebra containing a vertex operator subalgebra isomorphic to a tensor product algebra of minimal Virasoro vertex operator algebras (vertex operator algebras associated to minimal models), the tensor product theory can be applied. In particular, intertwining operators for such a vertex operator algebra satisfy the (nonmeromorphic) commutativity (locality) and the (nonmeromorphic) associativity (operator product expansion). Combined with a result announced by Lepowsky and the author in 1994, the results of the present paper also show that the category of modules for such a vertex operator algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category. In particular, for any pairp,qof relatively prime positive integers larger than 1, the category of minimal modules of central charge 1−6[(p−q)2/pq] for the Virasoro algebra has a natural structure of a braided tensor category.

Abstract:Let $L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0)$ be the simple affine vertex operator superalgebra with admissible level $\mathcal{l}$. We prove that the category of weak $L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0)$-modules on which the positive part of $\widehat{osp(1|2)}$ acts locally nilpotent is semisimple. Then we prove that $\mathbb{Q}$-graded vertex operator superalgebras $(L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0),\omega_\xi)$ with new Virasoro elements $\omega_\xi$ are rational and the irreducible modules are exactly the admissible modules for $\widehat{osp(1|2)}$, where $0<\xi<1$ is a rational number. Furthermore, we determine the Zhu's algebras $A(L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0))$ and their bimodules $A(L(\mathcal{l},\mathcal{j}))$ for $(L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0),\omega_\xi)$, where $\mathcal{j}$ is the admissible weight. As an application, we calculate the fusion rules among the irreducible ordinary modules of $(L_{\widehat{osp(1|2)}}(\mathcal{l},0),\omega_\xi)$.

Borel-type subalgebras of the lattice vertex operator algebra

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study new classes of subVOAs of the lattice vertex operator algebras, which we call the conic, Borel, and parabolic-type subVOAs. These CFT-type VOAs, which are not necessarily strongly finitely generated, satisfy similar properties with the usual Borel and parabolic subalgebras of a Lie algebra. For the lowest-rank nontrivial example of Borel-type subVOA $V_{B}$ of $V_{\Z\al}$, we explicitly determine its Zhu's algebra $A(V_B)$ in terms of generators and relations.

Abstract:We consider how a vertex operator algebra can be extended to an abelian intertwining algebra by a family of weak twisted modules which are {\em simple currents} associated with semisimple weight one primary vectors. In the case that the extension is again a vertex operator algebra, the rationality of the extended algebra is discussed. These results are applied to affine Kac-Moody algebras in order to construct all the simple currents explicitly (except for $E_8$) and to get various extensions of the vertex operator algebras associated with integrable representations.
