Abstract:Timing, distribution, and intensity of magmatism are critical to understanding deep lithospheric processes in the opening of the South China Sea (SCS). Based primarily on multichannel seismic reflection data, and aided with gravity and magnetic anomalies, we identify various igneous features, such as sills, stocks, volcanic edifices, and volcanoes, which are often characterized by high positive seismic amplitudes, and/or by chaotic or blank reflections beneath them because of their seismic shielding effect. We estimate the timing of igneous activities and analyze their areal distribution in the SCS region based on seismic stratigraphy. We confirm that most igneous emplacements in the SCS margins occurred after the cessation of seafloor spreading, and are sparse and volumetrically small during the rifting and seafloor spreading phases, supporting magma-poor margins prior to the breakup of the continental lithosphere. By contrast, post-spreading magmatic activities are widespread in the continental slope areas and in the central SCS basin, and are most likely triggered by extension in relation to cooling and subsidence of the oceanic and attenuated continental lithosphere, which could accumulate a total thermal contractional displacement up to 24km.

Abstract:Small marginal sea basins are often short-lived and typically not older than several to tens of million years, but they play critical roles in global plate tectonic cycles. This paper highlights some recent achievements in answering a range of geodynamic questions stemming from scientific ocean drilling by International Ocean Discovery Program Expeditions 349, 367, 368, and 368X in the South China Sea. Together, results from these expeditions provide new insights into continental breakup in terms of the opening style and time of spreading cessation, magmatism, and sedimentation during the formation of this marginal basin. The outcomes of these expeditions have revealed new challenges and spawned new hypotheses in mantle dynamics and crustal accretion that need to be addressed by future drilling on carefully identified drill targets in the tectonically active western Pacific.

Abstract:We investigate the crustal structure of the Dangerous Ground (South China Sea) through processing and interpretation of coincident wide-angle reflection and refraction seismic data. Continental crust of Dangerous Ground has been moderately thinned, down to 15 km, so that most of the structures accompanying the early opening of the South China Sea from Cretaceous to Miocene have been preserved. Subbasement reflectors as well as refraction velocities image an interpreted dismantled Mesozoic metamorphic unit in the southernmost section of our study area. A rollover structure indicates that the reflective base of the unit was used as a decollement where low-angle normal faults root and blocks rafted. The metamorphic unit is discontinued in a nearby basin located immediately to the north, where the refraction velocity model shows thinning of the crust from 20 to 15 km, with the presence of a 5-km-high mantle dome. In this deeper basin, mass transport deposits are found lying on a strong amplitude basement reflector interpreted as the footwall of an similar to 15 km offset crustal detachment surface that we link down to the mantle dome. We infer that the detachment reactivated an inherited low-angle contact most probably related to the Yanshanian belt. In map view, the reactivated structure forms a half-graben basin oriented NNE-SSW oblique to the generally accepted direction of extension. This orientation follows the general trend of a granitic belt that spanned the South China margin prior to extension, related to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific.

Abstract:During May 12–14, 2018, the International Conference for the Decade Memory of the Wenchuan Earthquake, in connection to the 4th International Conference on Continental Earthquakes (4th ICCE) and the 12th General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission (ASC), was held in Chengdu, China. There have been several outcomes of the Conference (for example, the book published jointly by Higher Education Press and Springer) as well as the present special issue. Among the 58 submissions, 34 have been accepted after peer review. Some of the papers came from the presentations during the Conference, but with additional submissions, the scope of this special issue is far beyond that of the proceedings of the meeting.
Seismic velocity structure and tectonic evolution of the Continent-ocean transition in the mid-northern South China Sea

Abstract:Continent-ocean transition (COT) is a key area for studying the lithospheric replacement from the thinned continental to oceanic crust. The extent and nature of the COT in the mid-northern margin of the South China Sea (SCS) have been reported recently after multiple geological and geophysical surveys, including IODP Expeditions 367/368/368×. However, the debate still remains due to limited constraints on the deep crustal structure and lateral variations. A 172 km long wide-angle reflection/refraction profile was conducted. The detailed crustal structure of the COT was mapped based on the forward and inverse modeling. The crust thickness decreased from ~12 km in the thinned continental domain to ~7 km in the COT, and then transitioned to ~5 km in the oceanic domain. A ~ 3 km thick layer with high velocity of 7.0–7.5 km/s at the bottom of the crust occurred continuously from the thinned continental to COT domains, which is interpreted as syn -rift underplating. Based on the features of crustal structure, sedimentary sequence and gravity anomaly, the landward and oceanward boundaries of the COT were determined which delimit a ~ 20 km wide COT. The COT documents prominent tectono-magmatic interaction and rapid transition from final rifting to seafloor spreading. Eventually a model was proposed to explain the breakup processes characterized by brittle faulting in the upper crust coevally with ductile flow in the lower crust.

Abstract:The formation of a new plate boundary and creation of the first oceanic crust, two of the most important processes of plate tectonics, still remains little understood. While older studies used to assumed a sharp ocean -conti-nent boundary between continent and ocean, recent studies suggest a progressive ocean -continent transition (OCT) between un-equivocal continental and oceanic crusts. In the latter view, breakup is not instantaneous but a lasting phase, which raises questions about the nature of the OCT basement and the processes operating between continental and lithospheric breakup. Based on detailed observations of high-quality and yet unpub-lished reflection seismic data, we describe and interpret the characteristic structures of the NW-South China Sea OCT and their re-lationship with overlying syn-breakup phase sediments. We show that the OCT displays a transition from fault-dominated rifting to magma-dominated seafloor spreading. On its continent-ward side, the OCT is made of hybrid crust where tectonic thinning of con-tinental crust is compensated by syn-exten-sional magmatic thickening. Oceanward, the hybrid crust evolves into a fully magmatic but fault-dominated proto-oceanic crust, and finally turns into a mature Penrose-type oce-anic crust. Relying on the growth structures observed in the syn-breakup sedimentary se-quences and magmatic additions, we propose a kinematic restoration of the breakup phase. We suggest out-of-sequence flip-flop faulting to explain the switch from asymmetrical, fault-dominated-extension, to fully magmatic and largely symmetrical syn-extension accretion recorded in the syn-breakup sedimen-tary sequences overlying the OCT.

Abstract:East Asia records a complex sequence of tectonic processes, with the mosaic of cratonic blocks and orogenic belts in China preserving evidence for multiple episodes of amalgamation and reworking from the Archean to Cenozoic. The prolonged subduction of the Pacific plate from the east has been invoked to explain the volcanic activities in the NE China region and in the Songliao Basin, as well as the extensive destruction of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle of the North China Craton (NCC). The collision between the NCC and the Yangtze Craton involved deep subduction and exhumation of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic orogen. In the South China Craton, the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks collided along the Shaoxing-Jiangshan-Pingxiang suture. Here we present an overview of the results from multidisciplinary studies on the major tectonic events in the eastern China region and evaluate the geodynamics of these in the light of our recent work based on receiver function analysis. The compression induced by the westward subduction of the Pacific plate in the NCC and South China appears to have triggered lower crustal and lithospheric delamination. We also identify mantle upwelling as a dominant trigger for the major tectonic process in this region.

Abstract:AbstractAt non‐volcanic passive continental margins, seismic techniques often failed to uniquely define the nature of crustal domains. Here, we overcome this problem by studying the structure and composition of the continent‐ocean transition (COT) in the Southwest Sub‐basin of the South China Sea, using P and S wave seismic tomography and Vp/Vs ratios, providing unique constraints on lithology. Throughout the image domain, we can rule out large areas of exhumed mantle as Vp/Vs ratios are always <1.9 in the shallow basement layer. Instead, the COT is characterized by extended and fragmented continental crust, and possibly mafic aggregation at the bottom of the crust. In concert with observations from multichannel seismic reflection data, seismic velocities and Vp/Vs ratios suggest that the oldest oceanic crust was formed by starved magmatism, causing rugged basement, thin crust, nearly absent lower crust, and moderately serpentinized mantle below. Our results reveal that rifting occurred without un‐roofing continental mantle.

Abstract:In East Asia there are abundant active faults, strong earthquakes, and active volcanoes, such as the Tanlu fault zone, the 1668 Tancheng earthquake (M 8.5), the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (M 8.0), and the active Changbaishan intraplate volcano. This special issue includes 16 papers, most of which focus on the big mantle wedge structures and dynamics under eastern China and eastern Tibet using seismic and magnetotelluric data recorded by dense arrays. Some researchers investigate the structures under southern Tibet and southern China. These results could be of great significance to understand the deep structure and dynamics of active volcanoes and strong earthquakes under East Asia.

Abstract:Collisional orogens form when tectonic forces amalgamte fragments of Earth’s continental lithosphere. The sutures between individual fragments, or terranes, are potential sites of weakness that facilitate subsequent continental breakup. Therefore, the lithospheric architecture of collisional orogens provides key information for evaluating the long-term evolution of the continental interior: for example, the South China Block (SCB), where the tectonic history is severely obscured by extensive surface deformation, magmatism, and metamorphism. Using new passive-source seismic models, we show a contrasting seismic architecture across the SCB, with three prominent crustal dipping structures across the Jiangnan Orogen. Combined with constraints from multi-disciplinary regional geophysical datasets, these pronounced dipping patterns are interpreted as relict wedge-like lithospheric deformation zones initiated in the fossil collisions that assembled the Yangtze Block and the SCB. The overall trend of these tectonic wedges implies successive crustal growth along paleo-continental margins and is indicative of northward subduction and docking of accretional terranes. In contrast, no such dipping structures are preserved in the Cathaysia Block, indicating a weak and reorganized lithosphere. The variations in the deformation responses across the SCB reflect the long-term modifications of the lithosphere caused by prolonged collision and extension events throughout the tectonic history of the SCB. Our results demonstrate the critical roles that suture zones played in the successive growth and evolution of the continental lithosphere.

Abstract:Abstract Tracing the closure of oceans with irregular margins and the formation of an orocline are crucial for understanding plate reconstruction and continental assembly. The eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, where the Mongol-Okhotsk orocline is situated, is one of the world's largest magmatic provinces. Using a large data set of U-Pb zircon ages, we updated the timing of many published igneous rocks, which allowed us to recognize tightly ‘folded’ linear Carboniferous-Jurassic magmatic belts that wrap around the Mongol-Okhotsk suture and their migrations both sutureward and suture-parallel. The new successive magmatic belts reveal a rollback, scissor-like (or zipper-like) closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean that was fundamentally controlled by coeval subduction rollback and rotation of the Siberian and Mongolian-Erguna blocks. This study also demonstrates the complex mechanisms and processes of the closure of an ocean with irregular margins and the formation of a consequent orocline.

Abstract:The studies of continental deep subduction and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism have not only promoted the development of solid earth science in China, but also provided an excellent opportunity to advance the plate tectonics theory. In view of the nature of subducted crust, two types of subduction and collision have been respectively recognized in nature. On one hand, the crustal subduction occurs due to underflow of either oceanic crust (Pacific type) or continental crust (Alpine type). On the other hand, the continental collision proceeds by arc-continent collision (Himalaya-Tibet type) or continent-continent collision (Dabie-Sulu type). The key issues in the future study of continental dynamics are the chemical changes and differential exhumation in continental deep subduction zones, and the temporal-spatial transition from oceanic subduction to continental subduction.

Abstract:As an important tectonic block in East China, the South China Block (SCB) plays a key role in coordinating the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate and the plate reconstruction in the Asian-Pacific region. Studying the lithospheric structure and composition of the SCB is important for deeper understanding of its multi-phase reworking and regional geodynamic processes. In this study, we compile satellite gravity and magnetic observation data, and conduct a multidisciplinary analysis to reveal the deep lithospheric structure that strongly controlled the tectonic evolution and Mesozoic magmatism of the SCB. Meanwhile, seismic tomography, terrestrial heat flow and sedimentation data are utilized to uncover the relationship between tectono-magmatism and alternating contractional and extensional events in the SCB. To further explore the relationship between the Mesozoic tectonic transition and the mechanism of the intra-continental deformation on a regional scale, we conduct a comprehensive analysis on regional tectonics, geophysical anomalies and geometric-kinematic characteristics of major structural systems and their Meso-Cenozoic evolutionary geodynamics. The results show that the distribution of low effective elastic thickness (Te) values, low velocity anomalies, thinner thermal lithosphere and lower rheological strength in the eastern SCB represents a reworked continental lithosphere by long-term magmatism and oceanic plate subduction, which is the final outcome of crust-mantle interaction and isostatic adjustment. According to a multidisciplinary analysis on the deep geophysical anomalies and lithospheric structure, we show a new dynamic model of asthenospheric upwelling, lithospheric thinning, melting of enriched mantle and lower-crustal thickening and delamination beneath the eastern SCB. Our model differs from other pre-existing tectonic models suggesting that the subducting Pacific slab was torn along the transform fault of the Pacific-Izanagi Ridge during the latest Mesozoic or earliest Cenozoic. Hence, we consider that the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate beneath the SCB triggered intraplate shortening and transtension, propagating deformation, magmatic migration, and large-scale mineralization throughout the advance, tearing, rollback, and break-off of the subducting slab. The upwelling of the hot asthenosphere in the eastern SCB triggered partial melting of the mantle lithosphere in a transtensional tectonic setting. Meanwhile, the upward heat conduction and mantle material advection caused lower crust underplating, resulting in the uplift of Moho and Curie surfaces, as well as the rise of surface heat flow. Both the asthenospheric upwelling in the mantle wedge and large amounts of magma underplating provided favorable conditions for the formation of large-scale magmatic rocks and polymetallic deposits within the eastern SCB.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the tectono-sedimentary and magma evolution of final rifting and continental breakup along the SW conjugate margins of the South China Sea (SCS). Based on new seismic observations, we define and map three rift domains, referred to as "box-shaped", "wedging" and "proto-oceanic". Each of these domains is characterized by: (1) the shape and thickness of the crust; (2) the specific architecture of the syn-rift megasequence that includes three system tracts each one including syn- and post-rift packages; and (3) different deformation styles. Results are synthetized in two Wheeler diagrams that provide a complete description of the tectono-magmatic and stratigraphic evolution of final rifting and breakup within two neighboring segments of the SW-SCS. We conclude that: 1) localization of deformation occurs simultaneous and perpendicular to the migration of magmaemplacement in front of a propagating spreading system, 2) the arrival of magma controls continental breakup, and 3) the final rifting stage and breakup are diachronous. The relationships between extension, sedimentation and magmatic processes observed in the SW-SCS differ significantly from the classical models derived from the NAtlantic or the Alpine Tethys. Main differences include the way the crust is thinning/necking, the sharp transition to breakup and the style of magma emplacement linked to crustal breakup.
Evolution of Meso-Cenozoic subduction zones in the ocean-continent connection zone of the eastern South China Block: Insights from gravity and magnetic anomalies

Abstract:<p>The evolution of unified East Asian continental margin was accompanied by large-scale magmatic and tectonic events. Here we investigate the tectonic evolution history of the ocean-continent connection zone in the eastern South China Block (SCB) during the Mesozoic-Cenozoic subduction of the (Paleo-) Pacific plates based on gravity and magnetic methods that provide a window to the deep crustal structure. The decomposed multi-scale gravity wavelets reveal subduction-related intra-crustal structures and the deep structure of the Mesozoic Greater South China Block (GSCB). The depth of Moho discontinuity was inverted by gravity data, constrained by the latest global crustal model of CRUST 1.0, and the inverted depth is closely consistent with and slightly larger than the depth on seismic profiles. The undulation of the Moho discontinuity beneath the South China Block and the deep supra-crustal faults along the continental margin are considered to be associated with the subduction of the (Paleo-) Pacific plates. In general, the Moho depth in the eastern SCB gets shallower from west to east. The oblique subduction-related strike-slip faults can be traced on the 7.4 km-upward continued field of the magnetic anomaly. The geologically-indistinct Jurassic magmatic arc along the SCB continental margin is verified by residual crustal field of the Bouguer gravity anomaly. The southern Ryukyu-Taroko line is speculated as the inland segment of the Early Jurassic paleo-subduction zone, and represents the southeastern paleo-plate boundary of the GSCB in the Jurassic. As the backarc-arc-forearc paleo-system migrated eastwards since the Early Cretaceous, the subduction zone retreated to the current Taiwan-Okinawa Trough, and the Jurassic magmatic arc-forearc was transformed to a backarc, indicating an eastward migration or jumping of the Yanshanian subduction along the continental margin of the SCB. The tectonic boundary of the Mesozoic GSCB was also identified through the magnetic anomaly field and the high-order gravity field.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Continental crust has long been considered too buoyant to be subducted beneath another continent, although geophysical evidence in collision zones predict continental crust subduction. This is particularly significant where upper continental crust is detached allowing the lower continental crust to subduct, albeit the mechanism of such subduction and recycling of the upper continental crust remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate Paleocene S-type magmatic and volcanic rocks from the Linzizong volcanic succession in the southern Lhasa block of Tibet. These rocks exhibit highly enriched 87 Sr/ 86 Sr, 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb together with depleted 143 Nd/ 144 Nd isotope ratios. The geochemical and isotopic features of these rocks are consistent with those of modern upper continental crust. We conclude that these Paleocene S-type volcanic and magmatic rocks originated from the melting of the upper continental crust from microcontinent subduction during the late stage of India–Asia convergence.

Breakup mechanism of the northern South China Sea: Evidences from the deep crustal structure across the continent-ocean transition

Abstract:To improve constraints on breakup processes that eventually lead to seafloor spreading and the subsequent formation of new oceanic crust in the northern margin of the South China Sea (SCS), we collect a 172-km-long deep-penetration wide-angle seismic data OBS2018-L5. In the continental domain, the results present a gradually thinning crust with thickness ranging from ∼17 km to ∼8 km, with a slight thickening crust at the Outer Margin High. The attenuated continental crust is fairly rough and highly offset by distinctly different scale faults system. In the oceanic domain, the top of the basement is highly reflective with weak faulting and relatively constant crust thickness ranging from 5 km to 8 km (average 6 km). The continent-ocean boundary is characterized by an abrupt change in crustal thickness accompanied by a specific boundary between mostly positive gravity anomalies in the oceanic basin and grossly negative anomalies in the thinned continental crust, and between low amplitude, out-of-shape magnetic anomalies in the thinned continental domain and high amplitude, linear anomalies in the oceanic domain. A 0–5 km thick high-velocity layer (7.0–7.5 km/s) is presented in the distal margin, which might represent mafic magma underplating. We also identify other magmatic features such as distinct buried volcanic edifices overprinting the original velocity structure. We propose that three mechanisms control the extension and breakup of the SCS, which are (1) the rapid transition from continental to oceanic crust, (2) elevated potential mantle temperature, and (3) the ductile lower crustal necking. Their interactions lead to the intense thinning of the continental lithosphere, decompression melting of the enriched asthenosphere followed by fast upwelling of mafic melt, relatively strong volcanic activities during the final stage of syn-rift and breakup, and finally generating a margin with intermediately rich magma, referred to as in intermediate-type margin.
