Abstract:Massive mafic sheets were recently recognized intruding the Neoproterozoic strata in Fuyang area, eastern Jiangnan orogen. Geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic studies were carried out to understand their mantle source, crust-mantle interaction, and tectonic setting. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon data indicate that the sheets were generated at 808 +/- 7 Ma. The mafic sheets consist of two groups: high Ti and low Ti. They are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE; 3.3-5.3 ppm) and show negligible Eu anomalies (dEu = 0.77-1.12). They also have strong large-ion lithophile element (LILE; Sr, K, Rb, Ba) enrichment, moderately strong high-field-strength element (HFSE) enrichment (except for Nb-Ta depletion), and positive eNd(t) (5.1-9.1). Geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the mafic sheets were generated from a depleted asthenospheric mantle source. The high-Ti mafic sheets have higher HFSE contents and less Nb-Ta depletion than the low Ti series, indicating a lower degree of partial melting and crustal contamination. The mafic sheets grew in a within-plate setting, concurrent with the similar to 820-750 Ma rifting events in the eastern Jiangnan orogen. They are likely related to the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent.

Abstract:Early Neoproterozoic arc magmatism and arc accretion processes are fundamental issues in reconstructing the Rodinia supercontinent. In this study we present new data of zircon U-Pb geochronology, Hf-O isotopes and whole-rock geochemistry for the magmatic rocks (including 12 felsic volcanic rocks, 3 granodioritic intrusions, 8 basaltic extrusive rocks and 12 gabbroic intrusions), which are spatially independent, in the Dahongshan area on the northern margin of the Yangtze Block. The investigated intermediate-felsic rocks are dated at ca. 970 Ma, ca. 885–865 Ma, ca. 840–830 Ma and ca. 810–790 Ma by in situ ion probe and laser zircon U-Pb dating methods. The mafic rocks are dated at ca. 870 Ma by in situ ion probe. Combined with previous age data, our new geochronology results suggest continuous magmatic activities from ca. 970 Ma to ca. 790 Ma in the Dahongshan area with a magmatic flare-up at ca. 840 Ma. The ca. 970–840 Ma mafic rocks, as well as the contemporaneous intermediate-felsic rocks, show enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) and depletions in high-field strength elements (HFSEs), representing arc-related tectonic settings. Zircon grains from these rocks generally have positive ε Hf (t) values from +7.3 to +14.7 and slightly elevated δ 18 O values from +5.59 to +6.89, indicating a dominant juvenile source with minor supracrustal incorporation. In contrast, the ca. 830–790 Ma mafic rocks are characterized by E-MORB- (enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt) and OIB- (oceanic island basalt) like and the contemporaneous felsic rocks show characteristics of A 2 -type granites, implying a within-plate extension environment. Zircon grains from the ca. 830–790 Ma felsic rocks display broad ε Hf (t) values from −5.7 to +15.3 and low mantle δ 18 O values from +3.81 to +6.11, implying multiple magma sources for their generation and the imprinting of high-temperature hydrothermal alteration. The relative contributions of the mature crustal component in the Dahongshan magmas decreases from 10–20 % in the ca. 970–840 Ma felsic rocks to 0–10 % in the ca. 830–790 Ma felsic rocks. The Neoproterozoic magmatic activity on the northern margin of the Yangtze Block recorded an integrated evolution from accretion of previous oceanic arc (ca. 970–870 Ma) at ca. 870–840 Ma to within-plate extension (ca. 830–790 Ma) in response to the convergence and divergence of the supercontinent Rodinia.

Abstract:The Neoproterozoic magmatic and tectonic history of the South China Craton (SCC) is critical for the reconstruction of Rodinia break-up and subsequent Gondwana assembly. Nonetheless, the tectonic attribution of the Neoproterozoic igneous rocks in the southwestern Yangtze is contentious, and the mechanism for crustal anatexis remains unclear. Here, we report mineralogical, whole-rock geochemical and Sr-Nd isotope data, and zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotope data from the newly found Neoproterozoic trondhjemites and granites in the Diancangshan-Ailaoshan (DCS-ALS) fold belt along the southwestern Yangtze. Both the trondhjemites (ca. 771–762 Ma) and granites (ca. 767 Ma) have high SiO 2 and low MgO contents. The trondhjemites have relatively high CaO, Na 2 O and Sr contents, but low K 2 O contents and Rb/Sr ratios, and show positive to slightly negative Eu anomalies and heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) depletions, resulting in high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios. In contrast, the granites have lower CaO, Na 2 O, and Sr contents, but higher K 2 O and Rb/Sr, and display negative Eu anomalies and flat HREEs patterns. The trondhjemites have negative εNd(t) (-4.12 to −3.85), positive to negative εHf(t) (-2.50 to + 5.28) and low δ 18 O (4.37 ‰–7.27 ‰) values. In comparison, the granites have positive εNd(t) (0.09 to 0.26), εHf(t) (+1.24 to + 9.86) and higher δ 18 O (6.50 ‰–7.24 ‰) values. The distinct elemental and isotopic compositions between the trondhjemite and granite samples reflect two different types of crustal anataxis within different crustal levels. The trondhjemites were formed by water-fluxed melting of the juvenile mafic lower continental arc crust (with addition of ancient Yangtze basement). The granites were derived from dehydration melting of juvenile felsic middle crust. Our results imply that the trondhjemites and granites were formed in a continental arc setting. The melting processes revealed here should be applicable to decipher the widespread Neoproterozoic crustal melting along the southwestern Yangtze, which was most likely fluid-controlled via subduction-induced asthenosphere upwelling. Combined with available regional geological data, we suggest that a long-lived Neoproterozoic (∼880–730 Ma) subduction zone may have extended from the Panxi-Hanna region in the northern/western Yangtze Block to the DCS-ALS fold belt in the southwestern Yangtze. Thus, the SCC may have located on the northwestern margin of Rodinia.

Abstract:To study the thinning of cratonic lithosphere in North China has been the hot subject of basic research in the fields of solid earth science in China. This paper presents an overview on the formation and evolution of continental crust, and outlines the mechanisms of forming the lithospheric mantle. It is suggested that the thinning of cratonic lithosphere principally proceeds in two ways, one by subduction erosion (e.g., North China), and the other by a combination of subduction erosion and underplating degistion (e.g., Yangtze).
Neoproterozoic Amalgamation Between Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks: the Magmatism in Various Tectonic Settings and Continent-Arc-continent Collision

Abstract:According to the temporal-spatial distribution of Neoproterozoic igneous rocks and relative rocks in South China, including ophiolites, arc volcanic and intrusive rocks and subsequent bimodal magmatism, we identified the presence of a Neoproterozoic intra-oceanic arc, continent-arc-continent collision and three tectono-magmatic zones between the Yangtze Block and Cathaysia Block. We have also unraveled the amalgamation and tectono-magmatic histories between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks: At similar to 1000-860 Ma, northwestward ocean-ocean subduction and southeastward ocean-continent subduction resulted in the intra-oceanic arc magmatism and active continental margin magmatism in the Cathaysia Block respectively. At similar to 860-825 Ma, the steepening subduction caused development of back-arc basin in the intra-oceanic arc zone and the slab rollback induced the arc and back-arc magmatism in the Cathaysia Block. Meanwhile, a shallow dip northwestward ocean-continent subduction formed active continental margin magmatism in the Yangtze Block. At similar to 825-805 Ma, the continent-arc-continent collision and final amalgamation between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks yielded the Jiangnan Orogen. At similar to 805-750 Ma, the Jiangnan Orogen collapsed, and the Nanhua rift basin formed. Our study also rules out any Grenvillian Orogenic event and mantle plume activity in South China and indicates a marginal position of South China in the Rodinia supercontinent. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Continental Outbuilding along the Margin of an Archean Cratonic Nucleus in the North China Craton

Abstract:The history of crustal growth in the Early Earth, formation of cratonic nuclei and the building of large continents have important implications in understanding the secular evolution of our planet. The North China Craton (NCC) is envisaged in recent models as a collage of several Archean microblocks which were amalgamated along multiple zones of ocean closure during the late Neoarchean, and offers window to gain insights on the origin of cratonic nuclei and their subsequent outbuilding. Here we investigate a suite of magmatic rocks developed at the periphery of one of these microblocks, the Qianhuai Block. We present petrological, geochemical and zircon U-Pb geochronological and Lu-Hf isotopic data on a suite of rocks ranging from hornblendite through gabbro and dioritic gabbro to TTG (tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite) and granitoids exposed in the Miyun area, and representing the cross section of the lower to mid segments of a continental magmatic arc. Geochemically, the felsic units of the suite straddle from monzonite through granodiorite to granite with dominantly metaluminous affinity, magnesian composition and arc-related features. The metagranites and TTG gneisses are characterized by negative Nb-Ta anomalies and positive K and Pb anomalies. The diorite, gabbros and hornblendite display negative anomalies of Th-U, Nb-Ta and Zr-Hf and positive anomalies at Ba, Pb and Sm with negative Eu anomalies and minor positive Ce anomalies, attesting to arc-related origin. In the tectonic discrimination diagrams, the rocks plot in the volcanic arc field, indicating formation within a subduction-related setting. The oldest magmatic population with ages of ca. 2560 and 2529 Ma from the hornblendite and the TTG gneiss represent the magma emplacement ages with fractional crystallization of underplated basalts derived from slab melts, leaving hornblendite as the cumulate. Magmatic zircon grains from the metagranite and granodiorite show upper intercept ages of 2457 +/- 21 Ma and 2475 +/- 12 Ma whereas those from the TTG gneisses yield ages of 2529 +/- 19 Ma and 2522 +/- 38 Ma. Younger age groups of 2444.4 +/- 8.3 Ma, 2418 +/- 16 Ma and 2161 +/- 31 Ma also occur in these rocks indicating multiple thermal events. The zircon grains from diorite and gabbros show Pb-207/Pb-206 weighted mean ages of 2411 +/- 11 Ma-2486 +/- 13 Ma with younger ages of 2.0-2.37 Ga. These rocks also carry older xenocrystic grains of ca. 2.51-2.65 Ga. The zircons in hornblendite show an upper intercept age of 2560 +/- 33 Ma and a lower intercept age of 1947 +/- 54 Ma. Young groups of ca. 2.2 Ga and 1.8 Ga are also found in this rock. The ca. 1.9 to 1.8 Ga ages correspond to the timing of metamorphism. The Hf isotopic data on zircons from the various rock types of the Miyun magmatic suite show both negative and positive epsilon Hf(t) values ranging from -9.64 to +7.04 with Hf model ages in the range of 2606-2844 Ma (T-DM1) and 2635-3147 Ma (T-DM2), suggesting crustal growth through both juvenile magmas from depleted mantle sources and reworked Meso- to Neoarchean crustal components. Our study reveals that the ca. 2.7-3.0 Ga core of the Qianhuai microcontinent represents one of the ancient cratonic nuclei in the NCC that underwent extensive continental outbuilding during late Neoarchean - early Paleoproterozoic through multiple magmatic events mostly related to convergent margin arc-type processes. It is possible that similar processes operated around the other Archean microcontinents in the NCC in the process of building the major crustal blocks which were finally amalgamated at the end of the Paleoproterozoic.
Geodynamics of heterogeneous gold mineralization in the North China Craton and its relationship to lithospheric destruction

Abstract:The North China Craton (NCC) hosts some of the world-class gold deposits on the globe, which can be classified into distinct types as the “Jiaodong type”, explosive breccia type and skarn type. The “Jiaodong type” gold deposits were formed at ca. 120–130Ma both in the margins and interior of the NCC. Two explosive breccia gold deposits formed at ac. 180Ma and 120Ma and are located in the southern margin and the interior of the NCC. Important skarn gold deposits of ca. 128Ma formed within the interior of the NCC. Although the formation and distribution of these gold deposits are temporally and spatially heterogeneous, they are commonly related with the lithospheric destruction of the NCC. The interplay of several factors such as basement architecture, inhomogeneous decratonization, crust-mantle interaction, mantle dynamics, magmatic characteristics, high heat flow and massive flux of deep-derived ore-forming fluids operated in generating the gold endowment. All the three types of gold systems are closely related with granitoid plutons and different types of dykes, the magmas for which were sourced from the lower crust near the Moho discontinuity and involved the mixing and mingling of felsic and mafic magmas. The ore forming fluids display prominent magmatic signature and were largely derived from deep domains, with probable input from the asthenosphere mantle. The heterogeneous distribution of the giant gold systems in the NCC was geodynamically controlled by the destruction of the craton. The regions at the confluence of two or three Precambrian micro-continental-blocks are generally characterized by thinned lithosphere and high heat flow, constituting the potential sites of giant gold deposits. The mantle beneath these regions shows EM2 characteristics implying the involvement of subducted oceanic components. The magmatic intrusions associated with the gold systems crystallized under high oxygen fugacity conditions and were rich in volatiles.
Subduction history of the Paleo-Asian oceanic slab along the northern margin of the North China Craton: A case study of zircons and cherts from central Jilin Province, NE China

Abstract:This paper presents U-Pb ages and Hf isotope data for detrital zircons and whole-rock geochemical data for siliceous-clastic sedimentary rocks of the Shitoukoumen Formation, central Jilin Province, NE China. The new data combined with published data for the northern North China Craton enable us to constrain the temporal changes in crustal thickness along the Solonker−Xar Moron−Changchun−Yanji suture belt (SXCYB). The Shitoukoumen Formation contains ophiolitic lenses, radiolarian-bearing cherts, and volcanic-sedimentary units of various ages. A radiolarian-bearing volcanic-sedimentary unit exhibits a Bouma sequence, in which detrital zircons from a rhyolitic tuff and siliceous-clastic sedimentary rocks yielded youngest ages of 278−273 Ma, which constrain the depositional age of the unit. The geochemical compositions of the cherts suggest the pelagic deposits contain some continent-derived clastic material and may be near-trench gravity flow deposits. The dominantly depleted zircon εHf(t) values of the sedimentary rocks in the Shitoukoumen Formation record extensive crustal growth during the Paleozoic. The variations in the crustal thicknesses during the Paleozoic to early Mesozoic record a tectonic transition from subduction initiation, mature continental arc, and finally to Paleo-Asian ocean closure. The thickest crust (∼58 km) at ca. 245 Ma might have been related to an orogenic peak during the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean along the SXCYB.

Abstract:The South China Craton, as one of the largest continental blocks in China, has been considered as a key element in the Rodinia supercontinent. Its Precambrian rocks record a long-term and complicated tectonic history. In the past few decades, scientists obtained massive geochronological and geochemical data, as well as many structural and geophysical data, and proposed percussive interpretations and different models for the nature of the basement, formation of the unified South China Craton, and secular evolution of the lithospheric mantle and continental crust during Precambrian. In recent years, many new results have been available because of the development of in-situ analytical techniques. In this special issue, we compile new research outcomes about the Precambrian geology in South China. Totally nineteen papers in the special issue covers fields in geophysics, igneous and sedimentary petrology and geochronology with a focus on unresolved and controversial issues. Our new special issue provides a timely addition to the understanding of the Precambrian geology of South China for the international geological community.
Reactivation of the Archean Lower Crust: Implications for Zircon Geochronology, Elemental and Sr-Nd-Hf Isotopic Geochemistry of Late Mesozoic Granitoids from Northwestern Jiaodong Terrane, the North China Craton

Abstract:The late Mesozoic granitoids widely distributed in the northwestern Jiaodong Terrane are important markers of cratonic destruction and lithospheric thinning of the eastern North China Craton (NCC). Here we investigate the Late Jurassic Linglong and Luanjiahe granites and report zircon U–Pb emplacement ages of 157–159Ma. These rocks also contain abundant late Archean, Paleoproterozoic, Neoproterozoic, early Paleozoic and Triassic inherited zircons, suggesting the involvement of continental crustal materials from both the NCC and Yangtze Craton in magma tectonics. The rocks investigated in this study show high Na2O+K2O and low MgO and are peraluminous, with enrichment in LREEs and LILEs (Rb, Ba, U, and Sr) and depletion in HFSEs (Nb, Ta, P, and Ti). They also display low εHf(t) values and high Sr/Y ratios, comparable to adakitic rocks, suggesting that the Linglong and Luanjiahe granitoids formed under relatively high pressure conditions and were likely derived from the partial melting of the thickened lower crust of the NCC. The Guojialing granodiorites were emplaced in the early Cretaceous (129Ma), and also contain abundant late Archean and Paleoproterozoic inherited zircons. The rocks possess high CaO, TFe2O3 and MgO, and are metaluminous, with enrichment in LREEs and LILEs and depletion in HFSEs. They are also characterized by high Sr/Y ratios, and have higher εNd(t) and εHf(t) values than the Late Jurassic granitoids, suggesting the involvement of mantle components in the magmatic source. We correlate the magma tectonics with the processes accompanying the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the NCC and the associated asthenospheric upwelling.

Abstract:New field observations and zircon U‐Pb age data, combined with previous studies, are employed here to evaluate the process of assembly of the Yangtze and Cathaysia Blocks. We show that the process started from the west prior to 1.0 Ga and migrated eastward with the final amalgamation along the suture at around 830–820 Ma. During the period of 850–820 Ma, both the mantle plume which possibly started at 850 Ma and the north‐directed plate subduction along the southern margin of the Yangtze Block controlled the formation and closure of a back‐arc basin along the middle to eastern segment of the Yangtze Block, as well as the diverse and complex magmatic activities. The closure of the back‐arc basin and almost synchronous rift basin overlying the folded “basement” sequence mark the termination of subduction when the Rodinia plume exerted a dominant control on the evolution of the middle to late Neoproterozoic basin and the related magmatic pulses.

Abstract:In the past decade, great achievements have been obtained in terms of sequences of Precambrian geological events, crustal growth and evolution, and Paleoproterozoic tectonic framework of the North China Craton. However, some key scientific issues are still unresolved, particularly the timing and tectonic model of Archean crustal growth and evolution, Archean tectonic framework of the North China Craton (especially the Eastern Block), and late Paleoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic geodynamic processes. It is noteworthy that crustal evolution and geodynamic processes are essentially controlled by magma convection and crust-mantle interactions at any tectonic environments. Therefore, comprehensive studies of the nature and evolution of the magma sources and crust-mantle interactions for different episodes of Precambrian mafic to felsic rocks are key to our understanding of both the late Archean to Paleoproterozoic crustal growth and evolution as well as geodynamic evolution of the North China Craton. In this dissertation, systematic studies of geology, petrology, zircon U-Pb isotopic chronology and Lu-Hf isotopes, and whole-rock major and trace elements were conducted on the Neoarchean greenstone metavolcanic rocks and granitoid gneisses in Western Liaoning, late Paleoproterozoic Jianping diorite-monzonite-syenite suite and Pinggu K-rich volcanic rocks, as well as similar to 1.23 Ga mafic dykes in the Western Liaoning-Northeastern Hebei Provinces. All these studies are combined, aiming to (1) decipher the nature of magma sources, genesis, and crust-mantle interactions for each episode of lithological unit or assemblage; (2) establish the prolonged Neoarchean to Mesoproterozoic evolution of the lithospheric mantle and crust-mantle interactions; and (3) provide further constraints on the Precambrian crustal formation and evolution as well as geodynamic evolution of the North China Craton.

Abstract:The Neoproterozoic amalgamation and timing of collision between the Yangtze and Cathaysia sub-blocks along the Jiangnan Orogen in South China remain disputed. With a view to constrain the crustal evolution in this major orogen, here we present new results from petrology, geochemistry, zircon U-Pb chronology and Lu-Hf isotopes, on a suite of meta-sedimentary rocks from the Shuangqiaoshan Group and tuffaceous rock from the Liantuo Formation in the Jiuling terrane of central Jiangnan Orogen. Magmatic zircon grains in meta-sedimentary and sedimentary samples from the bottom to top part of the lower and upper Shuangqiaoshan groups constraints the deposition during 863-820 Ma and 797-780 Ma, respectively. The unconformities were formed during 820-797 Ma, reflecting the final amalgamation of Yangtze with Cathaysia sub-blocks along the central Jiangnan Orogen. Our data also identify four major events at 1000-800, 1500-1900, 1900-2200, 2300-2600 Ma. The Neoproterozoic detrital zircons in the lower Shuangqiaoshan Group possess variable epsilon Hf(t) values of -44.0 to + 13.4. Combined with the geochemical features, these data suggest that the lower Shuangqiaoshan Group was deposited in a back-arc basin with a mixed provenance of granitic and felsic volcanic components, whereas the upper Shuangqiaoshan Group was formed in a rift basin with more granitic or felsic components in the source region. Integrating the results presented in this study with those from previous works, a five-stage crustal evolution model is proposed for the Neoproterozoic Jiangnan Orogen involving (1) intra-oceanic subduction beneath the Huaiyu oceanic island arc (1000-880 Ma), (2) collision between Huaiyu arc and Yangtze Sub-block (880-860 Ma), (3) back-arc extension beneath the Yangtze Sub-block (860-830 Ma), (4) collision between Cathaysia and Yangtze sub-blocks (830-800) and (5) intracontinental rifting throughout South China Block (800-750 Ma).

Abstract:The transition in tectonic regime of our planet during the late Archean with the initiation broadly modern style subduction system is one of the major topics of interest in earth science. The North China Craton (NCC), one of the oldest cratonic nuclei in the world, preserves important records of Archean and Paleoproterozoic crustal evolution, cratonization and related geodynamic history that are important in understanding the continental growth of the early Earth. Here we investigate a suite of Archean to Paleoproterozoic rocks including horn-blendite, amphibolite, gabbro, diorite, basalt, plagiogranite, granite porphyry and greenschist from Shandong Peninsula within the southwestern Jiaoliao block of the eastern NCC using zircon U-Pb geochronology, Lu-Hf isotopes, and whole-rock geochemistry. We aim to understand the timing and petrogenesis of the rock suite and its implications on the geodynamic history of the NCC. Zircon U-Pb data show Pb-207/Pb-206 ages in the range of 2.68-1.83 Ga, and is divided into three groups of 2.68-2.43, 2.38-1.96 and 1.95-1.83 Ga. Among these, the 2.68-2.43 Ga group confirms with the major magmatic phase during Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic transition in the eastern NCC, whilst the other groups of 2.38-1.96 and 1.95-1.83 Ga ages might represent the Paleoproterozoic orogenic events in the NCC. Zircon Lu-Hf isotopic data display epsilon Hf(t) values ranging from -0.4 to 10.0 and T-DM(C) of 3074-2080 Ma, which are subdivided into one group with U-Pb ages of 2672-2445 Ma characterized by epsilon Hf(t) values from -0.4 to 7.0 and T-DM(C) of 3074-2588 Ma and another group (2134-2009 Ma) with epsilon Hf(t) values in the range of 2.8-10.0 and T-DM(C) ranging from 2458 to 2080 Ma. These results indicate that the magmas (2672-2445 Ma group) were sourced mainly from Late Mesoarchean to Neoarchean juvenile components with minor input of reworked Mesoarchean crustal components, whereas the 2134-2009 Ma group was derived from Paleoproterozoic juvenile components. Whole-rock geochemical data of the granite porphyry and plagiogranites show typical subduction-related arc signature with the enrichment of LREEs and LILEs and depletion of HREEs and HFSEs (e.g. Nb, Ta, Ti), and mainly belong to I-type granites generated at arc-related setting. The ultramafic-mafic magmatic suite corresponds with tholeiitic to calc-alkaline series which were formed by partial melting of enriched mantle within an island arc setting in an active continental margin. In conjunction with the results from previous studies in the NCC, we correlate the 2.68-2.43 Ga ages with Late Neoarchean amalgamation of microblocks and cratonization of the NCC driven by late Neoarchean oceanic plate subduction, and the 2.38-1.83 Ga ages represent Paleoproterozoic orogenic events including the assembly of major crustal blocks in the NCC within the Paleoproterozoic supercontinent Columbia, and the final collision of these crustal blocks and cratonization.
