Abstract:Electrowinning of nonferrous metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt consumes a lot of electric energy, and the reduction of energy consumption is an important issue from environmental perspectives. The cell voltage of electrowinning depends on the anodic reaction such as oxygen or chlorine evolution and the anode's material, and the oxide coated titanium anodes using iridium oxide or ruthenium oxide are expected to reduce the anode's potential compared to traditional lead alloy anodes. This paper presents a novel oxide coated titanium anode comprising nano iridium oxide in combination with amorphous tantalum oxide for electrowinning, in which the anodic reaction is oxygen evolution in acidic solutions. The anodes are prepared by thermal decomposition of the precursor solution containing iridium and tantalum salts painted on a titanium substrate at a low temperature below 400 C. The oxide coating consists of nano iridium oxide particles completely dispersed in amorphous tantalum oxide matrix. The anode can reduce the oxygen evolution potential by 0.5 V compared to lead alloy anodes and by 0.15 V compared to commercially available iridium oxidecoated titanium anodes. The potential reduction can reduce the electric energy consumption by 29 % for copper electrowinning and by 18 % for zinc electrowinning. This smart anode is expected to work for energy-efficient electrowinning with cell voltage saving.
